How to Start a Presentation Using an Attention Grabbing Question or Statement

- In this video, you will learn a couple of English presentation expressions you can use to begin a presentation and get the audience's attention. What you'll learn is how to use a simple question or statement that'll quickly engage your audience.
Why a question or statement?
A good question or statement at the start of your presentation can quickly get the audience's attention and keep it throughout your presentation...
Like a good suspense or mystery
Suspense or mystery writers always put questions into the viewer or reader's mind... Who did it? How's it going to end? And so on and so on.
The key is that the audience is interested in the process and the outcome of the story. You can do the same thing in a presentation by giving the questions to the audience.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner! Thanks for the awesome comment. So glad the video helped you.
i am not native english speaker, but because of your clear speech i can understand everything. thank u very much.
Thanks Mark! Appreciate the kind words. The newer videos have captions, but these older ones do not. I'll see about getting some of the more popular ones transcribed. Hope your classes are going well. I live in Seoul so maybe one day we can meet for a coffee. All the best.

Thanks for your message! #1 prepare early. #2 use language you are comfortable with. #3 practice a lot and record yourself until you give a smooth delivery. Good luck!
Thanks for the comment. Sure, it's a general approach that needs a specific example. Try it and see how it works, though :)
Hi David! Thanks for your comment and question! I have a video that answers your question. Please search for "how to introduce the next speaker in a presentation" and it should show up. Good luck!
I used your instructions very carefully - we are now sending men to the moon - many thanks
Thanks! And good luck on your presentation exam!

Thank you! You're very kind. Those markers messed with me on more than one video :)
My very first presentation would be in my graduation, about 3 mins in front of hundreds over people. Do u think I can do that?
I think I would so nervous.
Thanks for the videos and advice comments. I'll learn from you. :-)
Thank you so much Dr Carl Kwan, I absolutely do appreciated. By the way, I'd keep on watching your videos before the actual time of my presentation. However, if there's anything important that I suppose to know about presentation, please tell me.
+mubarak gidado umar My pleasure. Honestly, everything is in the videos. Good luck!
Hello please Dr Carl if possible I urgently need your help, by giving me your personal email or g-mail address so that I would send you my presentation for feedback. Please i would present it on Monday 16th November, 2015. Here is my email address: Mubarak.umar@aurak.ac.ae hope to here from you soon as you see my comment.

Hope the light could be better, it's a little fuzzy.
Thank you! You're very kind to take the time to watch and comment. Appreciate the thoughtful words :)
Used for an interview in the UK yesterday, thanks man, some great videos....but I must insist on buying you some new pens!!! ;)
Good Video!
Other words & phrases are:
"Discover the secrets of..."
"We are about to reveal..."
"We will expose the secrets..."
"You want to know the secret to...? I'll tell you"
People love to feel that their in on something others aren't.
Nice ones, Christian!
Hey Carl, should I ask question and give my why of the solutions all in the intro? Or should I ask the question and present the solution in the presentation?
Hi Lisette,
It depends what you're doing in your presentation. But I think asking then presenting the solution in the presentation would be more interesting for the audience.
it's really helpful for me. because I always scared for presentation. when I stand before audience I really nervous . plz say __what I do?
This is a common fear and totally natural. I have a video about overcoming fear you might want to check out. One of the main reasons why people are scared is that they aren't fully prepared. A second reason is that they don't view the presentation as an opportunity to show off who they really are, but as something to dread. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Thanks for the message. Hope the interview went well! Looking forward to getting my new pens ;-)
That's awesome!! Good job and thanks for letting me know!
A very engaging speaker, even when his markers didn't work he kept going - oh no big deal...
Great work, I'll be looking for more of your videos...
Hi! I want to say that I really like all your videos with all those great tips! I will be having two group presentations next week but however i don't know how to end my introduction and to pass the speech to my team member, can i get any help please?
like how can i end my introduction and pass the speech to my team member smoothly?
Thanks! Good luck! Let me know what happens after.
can this kind of method also be using on an informal thesis presentation?
Very simple and practical. Thanks Carl
hi sir! thank you by this I can give a presentation in school easily thanks!
Thanks for your message. Honestly, I have no idea how to help you because I don't know who your audience is and why you're presenting. Do you want help with the entire presentation? When is it due? I've made several videos that take you from the start to the end of a presentation. Please try those. If those don't help, you could hire me if the presentation is that important. Good luck.
Thanks! It's funny because when I saw this in my inbox, I thought you were asking ME! Nice one! Good luck and thanks for sharing. Let me know how it works out for you :)
Great. You are a good speaker. Do not mind what other people wrote bad here.
Thank you. Glad to hear the video was helpful :)
Thank you so much! Hearing comments like yours motivates me to keep making the videos :)
Lol...And thanks for the compliment... Don't worry, not creepy sounding at all :)
Thank YOU. Good luck!
Thank for another great video. I have presentation about SAP software. SAP software is a software use to order goods. There are 4 different ways to order goods using SAP. Each option has different conditions etc. So my presentation would be about an introduction about SAP to order Goods and when the users would use these options (4 of them). So what would be my attention grabbing question? Would it be :
- How to use SAP to order goods? An introduction to give you a big picture of SAP
OR
- What options available in SAP to order goods? and when I should use them?
How you would write that question yourself if you were me. Thank you very much once again.
The questions are good. The question you should ask when preparing is, "How much does the audience know about the subject?" That will help you decide what your question should be. Good luck.
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. It is just a presentation for interview purpose. I am going to assume they do not know anything that is why they are taking the course (assuming). So any hint would be very much appreciate it. Thank you once again.
I see. I would ask something that perhaps other people wouldn't ask. If it's for an interview, you don't want to do the same thing other people might do. Find something important or challenging to help you stand out from the other interviewees.
Thank you so much for your help. Great hints. I appreciate it. Thanks
No problem. Good luck!
Thankyou I have an oral exam tomorrow and this really helped 🙂
Thanks. That's awesome! Good luck!
woa.. I'm going to have defense next few days and it's in English which is not my strength. haizz... Of course i'm worried but ur advice is great. I will follow that. Many thanks to u!
One suggestion, you need a better marker to write.
Thank you for this video!
My topic is about social media influencers, and I can't find a suitable Question to start my presentation 😕☹☹

Hello Dr Carl Kwan, please I absolutely need help, because I do have a presentation in biology about enzymes in my University. Unfortunately, it would be my first presentation in life, so I really have no confidence to do that but I feel it.
Would you like to help me please? It will be on 20th October 2015.
+mubarak gidado umar Thanks for your message. Everybody has their first presentation so I can understand how you're feeling. I highly recommend watching my presentations videos... anything about content, introductions, transitioning topics, conclusion... Everything you need is in my videos. I suggest you hurry because you need time to practice, which is one of the biggest mistakes people make...not having enough time to practice. The first mistake people make is not knowing your audience. Just watch my videos and get to work! Good luck!
what can i do for batter my presentation skill??
Wow .. you are really good :) I'm going to have my presentation next week. So, I think I will use your tips to present my presentation :)
Thanks!

Hi Karen! Thank YOU!
You have a good voice. I like it but I can't listen to all. It's so fast for me. General speaking, I'm not good at English, especial is listening skill. How can I do to improve my English skill? Can you help me? :(
Thank YOU, michael!
Thanks! Appreciate that!
Carl the video was a real help. Thankss!!!! I wonder if you could guide me to an presentation opener with story telling. And i'll be glad if you could customize the opener in regard to Importance of Learning English... Best Regards!!!!
Thanks for your comment. As for your request, my best advice to you is to think about how most stories are structured, how they begin. It could be as simple as saying, "Let me tell you a little story..." The rest is up to you.
We've all heard stories almost our entire lives so you inherently know how to do it. Remember that stories have a beginning, middle and end; there's a hero and a villain; there are obstacles; there's a climax and then there's a conclusion. Good luck!
Dear Carl!! Thanks for the comment. All I can think of now, is ways of incorporating your suggestions. Your help has come to me in a crucial time. Greetings and Love from India..

Carl, your videos are great. If you'd like to help the Korean EFL students I have, more, you could add subtitles, or speak more slowly in another series aimed at internationals. I teach presentations to Freshman and Sophomores at Hanyang University in Seoul.
Thanks! Appreciate that! :)
What would I have to do....?
My topic is success what is the suitable question to start with in the introduction plz help me😢😢😢
Depends on what you think success is. There is no wrong question. Just think about what your audience would find interesting. Good luck and thanks!
