He Said What about Medicare!? (My Response to WSJ & Bongino)

  • Recent Comment from Dan Bongino and a recent Wall Street Journal Opinion article suggest that Original Medicare Part D will fail by 2025 due to changes dictated in the Inflation Reduction Act.
This video is my response. I shred the WSJ and Bongino, point by point.
More importantly, the behind motivation for the article is a hidden agenda. Watch until the end to see what is really goin on.

The Medicare Part D program, Part D regulations, deductibles, out of pocket maximum and formulary requirements are the same regardless of whether you purchase your Part D as a stand-alone product or one that is bundled with a Medicare Advantage Plan.
All are required to cover two drugs from every category and substantially all drugs from the six protected categories, which include cancer drugs, autoimmune drugs and so on. Most Part D plans are currently robust and cover thousands of drugs, much more than the minimum. That may change, I’ll get back to that.
The Part D bundled with the Advantage plan does not comingle with the Advantage plan. It has a separate deductible, a separate network and is not subject the maximum out-of-pocket of the Advantage plan.
There is nothing in the Inflation Reduction Act that will impact Stand Alone drug plans, but NOT drug plans bundled with Medicare Advantage Plans. They are the same, it’s just how you purchase them.
Of course, those who have seen my videos on Part D already know that.
CMS could eliminate all Medicare Advantage plans today and overnight it would reduce the financial burden on the Government and improve healthcare for the consumer. And you want to argue that Private is better? When private has access to a cornucopia of government funds, the result is corruption.
Medicare Advantage Plans are the fiscal and regulatory nightmare the republicans fear they would have found in Original Medicare. But they get so caught up in this idea that everything private is better than anything government they don’t stop to look at reality. They don’t stop to question their own assumptions.
Reality is that our healthcare is system is neither government controlled nor private free market capitalism. It is a system of corporate welfare and backdoor deals. It’s one where no corporate crime is penalized, and political donations will buy off a vote to push an agenda based on profit.
With original / traditional Medicare and a supplement you can put all that aside. You can escape it. You are shielded from the politics and in part the corruption. You and your doctor control your healthcare.

These writers have no choice but to write in favor of their owner’s political party or they’ll lose their jobs. Corporate businesses lobby our politicians that we continue to vote back in office year after year. To trim it all down, we the people are doing it to ourselves, in other words we are the blame for the media and political corruption.

Matthew, Thanks again for your honest and clear discussion about the differences between Advantage Plans and Original Medicare. Because Medicare as a concept is complex, many people signing up have difficulty grasping the major differences and with the bombardment of advertising are preyed upon with the carrot of "the extras" and unknowingly fall for it because of little or no monthly premiums. I have watched just about all of your videos. Keep it up.

@markoverton2607, I think you struck a very important chord with your point about complexity. _Many_ topics are complex, and way too many people spend way too little time educating themselves about those complexities, often just for convenience's sake. They can't be bothered to _think;_ they'd rather parrot what they've heard from confident-sounding people. Many then talk to others as if they're experts, when in fact they know very little, and much of what they "know" is wrong. I mention it not just in terms of Medicare but because it's a serious problem that I see as rampant in America and probably around the world.

Except that man is a political animal. Humans create politics just by interacting. This goes way back before there was a medical profession, but even when there were wise women who understood something about health, rest, exercise, moderation, and herbs a lot of our ancestors also liked going to witch doctors who’d blow smoke and dust in their faces.
With advancement and modernization comes complexity. Your aunt with her box of plant and root powders is only so helpful. We are dealing with vast governmental bureaucracies and immense international corporations. Capitalism may suck, but it’s better than what came before. The lazy mistake is to assume that will will be stuck with capitalism forever. There will always be MARKETS though and markets (like green lawns require mowing -or even planting) require regulation. The answer is not to disdain politics (that means disdaining humans including ourselves). It means learning to engage with politics as responsibly and honestly and as well informed as we can.
Something tells me that Claason is not only very well informed, he is pretty damned honest. As for the WSJ and Bongino… the less said the better.

This allows all lobbying groups to coerce politicians funding their campaign under the misconception that corporations should enjoy the constitutional rights accorded and intended for individuals. Big Pharma is just one example of shaping the cost of drugs as well as a host of other things.

Thanks for the update and Part D plan clarification. I have never been a fan of Medicare Advantage since the early days when they were call Medicare Risk plans. They were intended to show private medical insurance would be cheaper than traditional Medicare. But as you mentioned Medicare pays Advantage plans a premium, I thought that practice had ended but I guess I was mistaken. One only has to ask how do these plans manage to pay for celebrity endorsements, massive advertising and offer low or zero premiums.
This kind of fear mongering is reminiscence of the early days of the ACA, aka Obamacare, where those opposed to it complained about the reduction in Medicare hospital payments. The naysayers left out the reason hospitals agreed to the reduction was unreimbursed care was projected to go down due to the expansion of Medicaid.
Please keep up your analysis and educational videos. I know I'm preaching to the choir but the US health care system has too many moving parts and shifts too much risk to individuals.

Call your state insurance commissioner office. They will put you in touch with a local volunteer group trained to help you. Most states call them SHIP.

I seem to me missing something with regards to the new $35 insulin monthly cost...I am on Medicare (with a Supplemental plan) and currently pay $47 a month for my insulin with prescription drug insurance. My insulin's regular cost is about $400 per month. So, I pay the $47 and the balance paid by my insurance goes towards my benefit maximum, moving me towards the Medicare donut hole. If my new cost in January is $35 a month, it seems the higher portion cost my insurance pays moves me into the donut hole even sooner. When in the donut hole, I have to cut back on living essentials to pay the extremely high cost of my medications. I hit that in August. Seems like if we as Seniors were REALLY cared about, something would be done about the donut hole. What am I not understanding? (Matthew, you personally helped me sign up for my Medicare plan and I am so grateful for your help!)

I chose a Medicare Advantage plan with Anthem. I’m happy with it so far. Will probably also get a cancer policy. I just couldn’t talk to another Medicare rep on the phone who sounded like an ancient person who worked in an underground parking garage most of her life and who smoked three packs a day…whose name is Marge. Seriously, the customer service skills at Medicare are the worst.

I am curious, why would you choose to talk with Medicare, whose employees are not licensed and have less than two months experience and who never even see the consequences of their recommendation vs an independent agent with years of experience whose livelihood is depends on quality service and good recommendations? Cost to you is the same. 800-847-9680

I’m a retired teacher who went with the Medicare Advantage choices offered by our State Health Benefits Program. I did go to meetings, listened to “experts” and did my own research, particularly focusing on benefit packages in print that are sent via mail to us (active teachers and retired teachers) yearly. I did talk to people at Medicare…eye roll. Serious eye roll! Customer service is very important to me and so is a yearly cap on out of pocket spending. (My Medicare Advantage Plan has a cap of 3500 out of pocket yearly for in network for the standard plan; the premium plan is 1000 less, but of course the premiums are higher.) Medicare met one need of mine, but as I’ve stated, their customer service is AWFUL. I went with one of the two big Medicare Advantage plans offered by our state, which are United Health with drug coverage or Blue Cross/Blue Shield with drug coverage ( both have premium or standard plan choices, and their customer service is excellent ). I have the “option” of moving back to Medicare during another open enrollment period. However, getting an affordable Medigap or supplement plan might not be cost effective for me since I’ll be out of my 6 month window of opportunity to choose a Supplement plan. However, it I had NOT chosen to go with my state’s Medicare Advantage Plan at age 65, I would have lost it forever. The state said about 50 percent of retired teachers chose the state’s Medicare Advantage Plan. No going back. Later, I suppose I could get some other type of Medicare Advantage Plan, but why? I have dental and vision, life insurance, and medical transport insurance by ground or air (these are separate plans from my health plan which are offered through teacher’s unions and organizations), and my Medical Advantage Plan allows me to see any doctor in the US who takes Medicare. It’s a PPO. I certainly appreciate your advice, wisdom, and expertise and listen to your videos weekly. You’ll never get rich teaching school; however the rewards are fantastic. Nothing better than working with the citizens of tomorrow. I had wonderful students, parents and leadership during my working career, and now after 35 years in the field, I’m taking advantage of the benefits offered to me. I guess I will see how the laws of the future play out. The only concern I have is how prescriptions will be covered in the future. Again, thanks so much for your videos. You help so many people, I’m sure.

When I read the WSJ editorial last week the part that stood out to me was that premium increases are limited to 6% regardless of how high inflation is. Do you really think that if inflation sucks the profit out of offering part D plans insurance companies will continue to offer them?
The WSJ never said the advantage plans will not have to follow the same rules as the part D plans. They said they would make up for the loss of revenue by raising premiums (the 6% limit only applies to part D plans), reducing drug benefits to the Medicare required minimum and cutting benefits like dental and mental health services. Take another look at the 5th paragraph.
The original editorial did have a chicken little tone and made the worst case seem like the most likely outcome. But it raised valid points you did not address. If inflation remains high and persistent and they cannot increase premiums enough to keep part D plans profitable insurance companies are going to quit offering them. They are not charities.
SS and Medicare have always been political footballs. True when FDR introduced the program, true when both the FICA tax rate and retirement age were raised 40 years ago, true now.

    • @MedigapSeminars
      @MedigapSeminars  Год назад +3

Hi Dave - you have some good points. It was tough to detail a response to such a complex subject. As I mentioned, Part D does not comingle with Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage Plans cannot raise their premium to solve a Part D problem. They will just have a separate Part D premium, which is subject to the 6% rule. If Part D plans can't increase premiums, they make up for it with higher drug costs. The average Part D premium is only about $35 / month - some are as low as $6/ month. That is not a significant source of revenue.

The REAL question should be, "Where,EXACTLY in the Constitution will you find the Article, section, clause, etc. that delegates tto the Government the authority to be in the Insurance business???" It's nothing less than sophisticated money laundering, just like Barry Care, Foreign Aid, Defense contracts, Social Security, student loans, just to name a few. And let's not forget Deficit Spending, A.K.A. the art of spending money that doesn't exist. IS THIS A GREAT COUNTRY, OR WHAT???

Thanks for the informative video. You really are a national treasure. A little surprised that you listen to an Alex Jones wannabe, based on delivery style that is. I don't know anything about this guy.
Year number four of Medicare for me. I called your company two years ago, but never followed through. Still without a medigap plan in NY. Even though I am a DIYer at heart, I decided you will have my business, solely out of principle, when I am ready to pull the trigger. Although once again I listened to your video on supplemental plans for NY and CT and I am still unclear on how it works with a medical issue that arises shortly after enrolling. Or better yet if treatment has been delayed for months or years for an UNDIAGNOSED condition. Even though original original medicare has no waiting period, does the same hold true for a supplemental plan for an individual that has had only had original medicare for 4 years?
