Great video Matthew. I worked in health care my whole life. Most folks don't know that when you get admitted to a hospital, you sign a big stack of forms. One of those forms gives the hospital permission to put a lien on your home. If your not insured, or under insured, a lien on your home can force the sale or could lead to medical bankruptcy. My other question is some cannot afford a supplement. 😢. I’m Checking into this for my brother with 3 outstanding medical issues (cancer receiving chemotherapy, neuropathy and just had reversal colostomy) and he just went back to work. I now understand after listening to you, that he doesn’t need to apply for Medicare when he turns 65. And I also learned reading Medicare that if one is working that it’s best to stay away from advantage plans because it can jeopardize your benefits at work. Am I right in what I’m saying
That is all correct. And yes, sadly not everyone can afford a supplement. If he is to stay with creditable work insurance he can get Part A, but avoid Part B Medicare. get Part B when he is ready to just be on Medicare.
This was great. I probably have 6 hours just trying to find a resource that can assemble all these pieces for me. Should've checked RUclips first. It's as though none of the people that have a good understanding of these options are willing to share it. Thank goodness you are willing and very able to do so. Thank you.
Your videos are very useful and provide lots of information. I have received lots of help after watching this post, please continue to share this kind of information. Thank you.
I think the US Congress men and women have free medical care for life that they don’t care to make the language of Medicare easy to understand for 😢the general public
Matt, thanks so much for making it easier to understand the alphabet soup of medicare. It is my understanding that here in Washington state I would not have to undergo underwriting if I were to switch from an Advantage plan to a Supplemental plan, nor would I have to undergo underwriting for switching between Supplemental plans. (seems to good to be true)
That's mostly true. "In Washington State, any Medicare beneficiary who already has a Medicare supplement, except Plan A, can switch to another supplement except Plan A at any time and without medical underwriting. A Medicare beneficiary with Medigap Plan A can only switch to a Medigap Plan A from a different insurer. *The above only applies to those who have an existing Medicare supplement plan. To switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medicare supplement plan a person will likely need to qualify via medical underwriting.* " www.insurance.wa.gov/when-can-i-sign-or-switch-medigap-plans
I feel very let down by our health system. No matter what I choose it is going to force me to sacrifice things that I need to just be able to have health care. When you are on a very fixed income it matters. It is nice too know other countries benefit more from our government than us who can now be taxed on our social security.
Great info! You clarified some of my questions. I have plan N now and was thinking of changing to advantage due to the constant tv ads and promotions. I will stay with Plan N. Thanks for the video!
I am a new agent training to work with Medicare Beneficiaries later this year. Your videos are wonderful and extremely helpful to my learning. I am confused about one thing you said in this video. You said that if you're able to continue your employer coverage, when you turn 65, to delay enrolling in Medicare Parts A & B. I know you can opt out of Part B but not Part A, right?
I am a retired government worker. Upon retirement at 62 and onward to 13 years later I have skipped B because it was not mandatory. I keep a private insurer for full coverage , except A, where the private insurer becomes secondary. That all changes in 2024 whence I am mandated into Medicare B. Since the move to Medicare B is mandatory, there will be no 10% penalty per year. I will take original Medicare plus plan G, no question.
One of the best videos ever made on Medicare. My only complaint is the sound effects during the time you want people to subscribe to the channel. That sometimes create a pretty big distraction and I lose track of what you were trying to say, but regardless, this video is very complete. I had already decided to only go wit a supplemental plan and this re-enforces that.
This video is ideal for anyone starting Medicare in the next year. It’s an update of my 2017 video by the same name that became the #1 Medicare RUclips video and held that position for years. My apologies one of the cameras is out of sync. Embarrassing and entertaining at the same time. You may also like my free Medicare mini-course available on my website here: ruclips.net/user/shortsKWoFRfhwNDA or medigapseminars.org/
Oh, whew... I'm so glad you realize. That's what I came here to say. It's surprisingly distracting, so I have to look away from the TV when that view appears.
Thank you for your clear and concise video. It helps me understand the overall concept without getting lost in numbers and minute details. Your information can help me choose the appropriate path for me, then I can look into the numbers and details that are relevant to my chosen path.
Another great video, much appreciated. I would like to have seen even a general cost comparison for a person in good health/few prescription between Medicare+MSP+PartD and MAP +bundled PartD and a similar comparison for a person in poor health/several prescriptions. I have some questions: 1. if most MAPs cover 80% cancer costs, why do you need to check for this or were you just making the point that if this spans two years? 2. How to you avoid a gap in health services? If you retire at 65 and your existing health cover stops then so you have to enroll in medicare in the 3 months prior to 65 so that Medicare starts immediately? 3. Related to #2. If your spouse (younger) and kids are on your existing health plan, what happens to them? 4. Not a question, just a comment.@28:08 "Theres never any pre-existing nor medical questions for a MAP!". This sounded like a "benefit" but when you think about it, the ins co dont need underwriting because they have total control to restrict or deny your benefits under a MAP. 5. Since Part A costs nothing (for most ppl), is there any disadvantage of enrolling for part A if you continue working past 65 for an employer with 20+employees with creditable insurance? 6. If you have a MAP, so you still have to pay deductible/copays that would have been due for Part A under original Medicare? If so, is there an MSP that covers this situation or with MAPs are you liable for these costs. (Hospitals can place liens!)
Very Very Good summation of the most bizarre...yet important... health decision process ...that we...who are turning 65...must make. 5 star summary (much gratitude) of a system that appears to be totally illogical. Laden with land mines and Intentionally confusing, misleading, and opaque...yet is underlying necessary and generous...if you make the right choices. Universal Health Care (all other advanced nations have it--ALL) would eliminate all of this nonsense and weed out the private corporate predators.
I really like your videos. I assume that Original Medicare Parts A&B along with Tricare For Life is still the very best choice for my wife and me. Thanks for all you do.
I'm keeping my original A and B next Medicare supplement insurance G and D for my meds I should be set. Unless I get the plan for eye & dental insurance 🤷
This was a great video with lots of good information and it was explained very well. I'll just have to watch it at least two more times and take notes, in order to see which way is right for my situation. It's hard to consider income today and what you can afford, versus your health in say 5 to 7 years of aging. Throw in your measly SS retirement benefit payment after you lose your employment income and see how that feels.

22 years ago I went through treatment for head/neck cancer. Surgery to remove lymph nodes, 40 radiation sessions, 3 chemotherapy sessions, numerous Dr, and lab visits totaled $700k, close to $1m today. Private insurance (Union) was my savior. I am curious if you have done a side by side comparison using a major medical situation like mine demonstrating how a supplement plan+prescription plan might compare to an advantage plan with prescription coverage. I am sure an advantage plan would perform poorly.
Congratulations on being a cancer survivor! The video states most MAPs cover80% for cancer leaving you 20%. Had that been the case, you might have been paying $200,000. I am not sure with a MAP if you can get additional insurance to pay what the MAP doesnt - assume not. Again, from the video, if I understand it, with Original Medicare and a Supplement plan you would be covered but you would have paid more in premiums which would have been chicken feed compared to your costs. 22 years. Wow. Good for you! Inspirational.
@@pickavana8056 Actually according to studies on those enrolled in Medicare Advantage, he may not have been here! Studies are showing those enrolled on a MA plan have higher mortality or increased death rates due to services or providers being denied despite the fact that they pay 80%. Yikes! But sometimes MA is all you can afford, especially for minorities.
Hi again Jack, I may be reaching out to the 800 number to speak with you or a broker. My question now is, my brother who went back to work, still getting chem, dealing with his neuropathy, had his reverse colostomy surgery , turning 65 in October 2023 and has been registered for his Medicare via disability has realized he can’t handle the work force anymore. Which means when he decides to retire he’ll lose the awesome union medical he’s had for 21 yrs that has paid for all his care. We now need to find the best, affordable supplement plan for him with no interruption in his care. I’ve started researching plans and it’s a pain. The doctors he sees through his union health care are basically non Advantage plan . So can you help me/him with this?
Thank God, I had a localrepresentitive who was very upfront about all of this information so most of it is not new to me, but to a lot of people, especially ANYONE who has any known chronic health issues it is critical that you have these conversations prior to turning 65. 1 year after turning 65 you may not even be insurable if you haven't had and understand what you are signed up for and how they work. I believe the government is about to step in and make some changes but who knows how long that will take and what actually they will change if anything. I certainly don't want our government choosing my health care benefit options! They have their noses and cameras in way more than I belief they have a right to now and it's only getting worse weekly. Seniors, please do your homework. This can have an effect on the rest of your life and the health care benefits you receive and/or out-of-pocket expenses you can and will be made liable for. One major hospitalization can totally wipe you and everything you own out.

As I approach age 65, I am being bombarded with so many 'Sign up for Medicare' and Medicare Advantage Plans advertisements -- enrollment forms are continually being sent to my house by different insurance companies as well as clogging my social media that it has made me nearly paralytic with anxiety, knowing that I am soon going to have to deal with this. Thank you so very much for making this clearer for me and easier to understand. I feel like I finally have a bit of a hand-hold on all this!
Here we go! Trying to learn all I can to help my 75 year old mom who can’t understand any of it. God help me!
No god we trust!
Ha ha. I’m there too. 😂😂
A genius will find all of this information complicated. It's just way too much. I'm overwhelmed. God help us all👏🏾

We switched five years ago from a supplement to an advantage plan. BEST decision we ever made!
Thank you for the information, I finally understood the difference between Advantage Plan vs Supplement plan, now I know that Supplement G is better choice. Will check part D seminar
I’m glad I saw this video for my mother in law .
Thank you so much - best practical, understandable, explanation video I have watched! Will be checking out your other videos as well.
This is a fantastic lecture. Well organized. Nicely presented. And exceptional information. Thank you.
You have the best channel to understand Medicare!
Thank you
I’m 73 and just changed from gap to advantage after speaking to an insurance broker who convinced me I’d save $297 a month premium to ZERO. Now, I’m freaking out that I won’t be able to go back to my original Medicare & gap plan after hearing this video. I’m just sick about it!
I am sure the agent is your new best friend now too! That is the kind of crap that really makes my blood boil. Here is a recent video with more detail: ruclips.net/video/_4xXIJZes9o/видео.html Please reach out to us for help. medigapseminars.org/contact-us/ If you cannot pass underwriting, then you will likely have a Trial Right that will allow you to go back to the previous supplement. But that is an expensive price we may be able to beat with a different company.
I watched, thank you, I’m going back to same agent at 3pm tomorrow to try to go back to my original BCBS plan. If that doesn’t work I’ll definitely contact you!
@@janeyd1976was you able to go back to your gap plan.
I’m just coming up to 65, and have been confused at the terminology and options around Medicare. Hands down, this has been the best instruction I’ve seen on the topics to date, especially in describing the differences between advantage and supplement plans. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I am deeply thankful.

I like your video presentation. It is informative too, at the same time. Thanks a lot for your guidance!
Video really dissipates the mental fog I had reading whatever came in the mail regarding Medicare, thanks
I am preparing for my time in a few years. Thank you for making a very messy confusing process way clearer.
Thank you so much. I was afraid this would be a scam, but it was very helpful as we are moving my mother in and are helping make sure she is on the best plan. Not to mention we aren’t that many years away from needing to make these decisions for ourselves. It’s so very complicated and this video helped a lot!

This is a very comprehensive information about Medicare.
Excellent! I'm turning 65 next month!
You always explain everything so clearly and completely.
Thank you
This was great.
Thank you.
I have a year to figure it all out. Your video was very helpful I will watch more of your videos Thank you so much.

This medicare enrollment is too complicated. This is for the elderly & disabled. Why do they make it so complicated?🤦🏾♀️
I agree.

As always, helpful and informative.
Thanks! You are a lifesaver!!!!!!
You are very welcome, and thank you for the tip!
Great info! You clarified some of my questions. I have plan N now and was thinking of changing to advantage due to the constant tv ads and promotions. I will stay with Plan N. Thanks for the video!
I am learning so much from watching your videos. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing source of information. This one is quite helpful.
Excellent! Thank you so much for such a sensible presentation.
Thank you very much. It surely helps me to understand much better. You explained it clearly that no one had done it to me.
As a nurse who deals with insurance to a point, I see many ppl who are working past 65 with a commercial insurance but also having Medicare A .

This is an incredibly detailed and thoughtful explanation of the various options.
Thank you
One of the best videos ever made on Medicare. My only complaint is the sound effects during the time you want people to subscribe to the channel. That sometimes create a pretty big distraction and I lose track of what you were trying to say, but regardless, this video is very complete. I had already decided to only go wit a supplemental plan and this re-enforces that.
Thank you so much.so helpful. I am retiring after 48 yrs at my job n you answered so many questions.
This video is ideal for anyone starting Medicare in the next year. It’s an update of my 2017 video by the same name that became the #1 Medicare RUclips video and held that position for years. My apologies one of the cameras is out of sync. Embarrassing and entertaining at the same time. Thank you for your knowledge and God Bless you Matthew!
Very knowledgeable. Very informative. Easily understood.
Another great video, much appreciated. I would like to have seen even a general cost comparison for a person in good health/few prescription between Medicare+MSP+PartD and MAP +bundled PartD and a similar comparison for a person in poor health/several prescriptions. I have some questions:
1. if most MAPs cover 80% cancer costs, why do you need to check for this or were you just making the point that if this spans two years?
This video was very informative. It helps clarify what the choices are in ways that brings clarity. Thank you!
Actually, Original Medicare plus a supplement eliminates the private interest. It puts your care in your hands.
Universal Health care is like the advantage plans. You and your doctor are not making the decisions about your healthcare.
Excellent information! Helped me to calm down about choosing what to do!
I really like your videos. I assume that Original Medicare Parts A&B along with Tricare For Life is still the very best choice for my wife and me. Thanks for all you do.
yep
Wait...I don't remember Matthew covering Tricare (TFL) on this Video. This is the Plan I am considering to opt for.
Great information!! Medicare is entirely too complex. We don't know that we dont know. Thanx much for simplifying.

I need to know the same for my brother who is dealing with the same issues
This has stressed me out so bad😮
This is the BEST video I've seen!
Thank you Judy
