Chris Stuckmann is a good guy, and I hope he is successful in fulfilling his dream as a film maker, but his channel isn't fun to watch anymore. There was so much passion and love in every video. I even loved the Halloween specials he did with his wife. Now he's just mundane, because his fear of being rejected by producers is so great. I think he feels bad bashing people because he now understands the movie-making process, but that shouldn't stop him from critiquing.

When Chris's Madame Web video appeared on my Home page a couple weeks ago, I clicked on it, thinking that maybe he was actually going to do a critical review. After watching a minute or two, I saw that wasn't the case and turned it off. I then realized that, though I still subscribed to his channel, I hadn't watched a video from him in quite a while. Seeing a Chris Stuckmann thumbnail was all I needed to know about his thoughts on the movie (i.e. he liked it); I'd rather spend my time seeing what other people thought. And so, I unsubscribed from Chris that day. It wasn't in protest or to "punish" him. I just realized that I had no use for a movie review channel that didn't actually review movies.

"I clicked on it, thinking that maybe he was actually going to do a critical review" - so you dropped him because his opinions was not what you wanted it to be? you can just record yourself and listen to it again and again. why would you want to listen to someone else? Madame web was bad. that's it. the whole internet is talking about it in the same angle. Chris talked about it from a different angle. Hollywood has become commodified. art has become commodity. the art aspect has been reduced, it happens when artists need to please the shareholders. Chris talked about it. what's so wrong with it? I guess if Chris was speaking like every other critic next door, the things we want to hear, he wouldn't have lost so many subscribers. much like Hollywood and the audience itself today. we want to see different stories, different/ new IPs, different perspectives. but as soon as holywood throws it at us, it becomes a box office failures. Chris should have talked about us audience too. how we have become zombies. whenever we will see a Marvel/spiderman tag we will throw our money.

One thing I've just realised about Chris, it's evident back when he made his video about his Jehovah's Witness past, I think it explains perfectly this anti-negativity anti-criticism mentality over the last few years now, it was staring me right in the face and only now have I just noticed this, to put it in simple words.... Chris Stuckmann is very sensitive soul, I know it sounds weird but it makes sense when you think about it, it's very clear he's someone who cares about what people think about him and he wants people to like him, this probably comes from him growing around the type of people he was once associated with who told him what to do and what not to do and how other people reacted to him and this lifestyle, and he desperately wants to change this around and rectify it.

@@JayVaters also I think you made a great point in bringing up Roger Ebert. Because Stuckman looked up to him so much, I mean he literally did a tribute when he died over 10 years ago now. Ebert had a great relationship with Scorsese, and Spielberg, yet that didn’t stop him from criticizing their work and I need harshly. And Ebert himself was involved with the screenplay for beyond Valley of the dolls the Russ Mayer movie, yet that didn’t stop Gene Siskel from absolutely tearing that movie to shreds and giving it his absolute lowest rating. So it seems like Stuckman doesn’t understand the importance of criticism and especially negative criticism. And I can say from my own experience I think negative criticism really helped me, I would’ve never learned proper punctuation or how to read and write without my English teacher harshly critiquing me. I think what’s really going on is that Chris does not handle criticism very well but as we’ve seen, and so he feels that he would be hypocritical to criticize other filmmakers for their work when he himself he can’t take criticism.
And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a more positive outlook when doing film criticism. I think Austin Burke and Sean Chandler are perfect examples of that.

in the mid 2010s there were attempts to bring expensive television style productions to the world of online film analysis. Turned out that the people who attempted that much growth were overreaching a bit. No trouble. The online film community soldiers on. When those shows like Collider were a thing though, it was inevidably the case that the on camera talent had producers in their ear, restricting what they could and couldn't say. Not a good thing by any mreans, but it's the nature of a larger production. Did that detail about these productions really warrent Red Letter Media doing there whole Nerd Crew thing, where they repeatedly commited 20 plus minute acts of unadulterated mean spiritedness, punching down at people less popular than them?
I only bring that up because I never knew or cared about the personal lives of the guys behind RLM but it was when I saw that that I started to take for granted that they must all be single and childless. (though that's just an assumption and I could be wrong) Sure it's fun to have countless strangers who don't know or really care about you validate that sort of thing, but do you want any child of yours to see you act that way?

The internet is a very toxic place and I do not see why people are outraged that Chris Stuckmann is not giving negative reviews. Maybe it is because he is becoming a filmmaker himself and understands that their is a lot that goes into writing, producing and directing movies. If he better understands how film making works that means he should be able to more correctly and more nuanced criticize movies. Criticism doesn't mean dragging something in the mud.
I'm a former actor. Just because I know how hard acting is doesn't I now shouldn't criticize acting. No, instead, becauase I know how acting works I'm actually more critical. Not negative. But I can criticize with way more knowledge and nuance.
Without criticism people won't be able to learn and grow and make better movies.

Want to reshare this comment I made to Chris Stuckmann in light of his views on Madame Web. Hope you can read my thoughts on how he changed for the worse.
    LONG WALL OF TEXT INCOMING:
    Dear Chris,
if you have ever gone to film school, you may have learned about film movements like the French New Wave and New Hollywood (the latter where Scorsese, Coppola and Spielberg hailed from).
And in these film movement, these filmmakers rose to prominance understanding films through the act of criticizing other films. Imagine François Truffaut never having the gulls to boldly criticize all the "Tradition of Quality" (aka Oscar bait) films that Cannes put up year after year after year. Without being open to criticizing the films of his day, he wouldn't have became an auteur director and did so many notable classics like the 400 Blows and stuff - all because he wants to challenge such conventions and strike it out on his own. In fact, the term, the auteur came from the French New Wave and it is all thanks to the prominent film critic, Andre Bazin.
Chris, I have to be brutal and very blunt but there is no point in defending filmmakers when you cannot even have the backbone to criticize. You are way too biased to the filmmakers that you can look over obvious flaws and point towards the studios and other corporations in charge of the artists. You cannot tell if there are some artists out there who are obvious hacks and only concerned for the paycheck/recognition over personal artistic development. Instead, you defend every single writer and director as you are just concerned about breaking into Hollywood. You are ALWAYS playing it too safe in the post 2021 reviews you posted.
    I missed your Hilariosities.
I missed your notable quotes from reviewing deservingly shitty movies like Fifty Shades of Grey, Fant4stic, and so much more.
I missed you giving lettered grading for the notable films you have watched.
I missed the little things like the angelic chorus stock audio you put in movies you deemed as A+.
    I missed the pre-2021 you.
I hate to say it but those are WHY I subscribed to you in the first place back in 2015. And now, I am tired of watching your new reviews because they are so shallow and lacking in something which made you unique in the first place - brutal critique. I am unsubscribbing from your channel.
We all deserve the old Chris Stuckmann to be truly Stuckmannized.

I don't think it matters because he will quit within a few years anyways. When he is part of the industry when he is a director of Hollywood movies he is not going to continue being (with all do respect) a simple RUclipsr anymore. Why would he? So controversy or not he will stop anyways. I wish him all the best in his wish for making movies and i hope he will succeed. I will gladly say goodbye to him if this means he can follow his dream in becoming a fulltime moviemaker.

Thank you for making this video. When I watched his recent video right before his sponsor, I was like “here we go again” since he has done this before. My problem with his video is that why make it in the first place. Even when he has some good points, he whole video was basically lecturing us about how hard it is to make a movie while dismissing other issues by blaming just blaming the studio. I used to like him and loved his content but he does come off as hypocritical, bias, naive and dishonest at times

I’m going to be one of the few people defending Chris. As someone who’s watched his channel since 2012, I miss the bad reviews and hilariocity stuff as much as anyone else. But people change. He doesn’t want to be the RUclipsr he used to be, and that should be okay. As far as the claims that his channel is now boring and it seems like his heart isn’t in it as much- people seem to forget that you inevitably sacrifice a certain amount of passion and enthusiasm for your hobby when you decide to make it your profession, regardless of how much you loved it before. It’s easy to love watching and talking about movies. It is much, much harder to love MAKING them and sustain a career out of it. I applaud him for trying even when it means people will trash him and turn their backs on him

Although I still like and admire Chris Stuckmann, I no longer watch and keep track with him as much as before back in the old days in the 2010s. Same with Jeremy Jahns even though again, I still like and admire. I know both Chris Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns are still around and making videos while others reviewers like Schmoes Knows, Grace Randolph, and Tom Chatalbash are not the same as they used to and the rest that I used to watch and follow such as Groundedforlife27, LazyCritic08, FuryoftheFilmFan, TheFrickenFilmCritic, RevolutionReviews, Gab and Dad, Bright Eyes Long Lashes, Team Haunted Flower, and Catherine Reitman have all pretty much retired. Even though there were some movies and tv series that I disagree with Chris Stuckmann on, both that horrible live action Dragonball crap Evolution and that messy M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender on the other hand, I actually agree with Chris Stuckmann 100%. In my opinion, those two terrible films are worse than the 2008 live action Speed Racer film which was a massive box office bomb. Anyway, Chris Stuckmann right now is married and have two sons who are twins by the way. I also remember Chris Stuckmann used be friends with Doug Walker the Nostalgia Critic but due to the terrible controversy at that Channel not so Awesome, Chris Stuckmann along with many other content creators who left that company have cut ties with Doug Walker and his brother Rob. Therefore, they are no longer friends with each other anymore.

If Stuckmann has legitimate mental health reasons for wanting to keep negativity out of his life, then skipping doing negative reviews is legit, but if his reason for not going hard on anything is that he is afraid of jeopardising connections with people in the studio system, he can't expect viewers to take his channel seriously any more. Obviously, he can do what he likes as it's his content, but that just the way things are.

  • @sumbohdee2luv

i kinda find chris pretentious but at the same time disagree with this hate against him. yeah you’re right its lame to be a review channel and not give negative criticism and his channel is falling, but at the same time if this is what he wants to do, he should do it. he doesnt owe you anything, if he’s lost the passion for his past style of videos, he shouldn’t have to do it. also you can’t both accuse him of sucking up to studios and also only criticizing the studio and not the filmmaker of madame web.
also youre complaining that he only makes youtube videos now for income and not passion, but you’re literally using his name to drive views to this dragged out 20 min video? let’s be real you’re not passionate enough about this subject to want to make a video about it for any other reason than capitalizing on his clout. you’re acting like he’s robbed you of something you enjoy, there’s so many other channels out there bashing movies, you’re not being denied anything, you have no emotional investment in this other than wanting to milk the drama involving a channel bigger than yours. you’re really gonna pretend he was doing a public service by negatively reviewing movies and without that the people won’t know whether to spend money and time seeing a movie? gtfo
to be clear i’m no lover of stuckmann, i think it’s so pretentious that he brings up the fact he made a movie at every single opportunity and i fully expect Shelby Oaks to be terrible. but at least he is doing what he cares about and has more integrity than people like you.

You want to ruin him because he made one video not wanting to bash Madam Web? It wasn't a good movie, but there were a lot of anti-woke people trashing the movie. Maybe that's why Stuckman didn't want to criticize Madam Web because he didn't want to be a part of the hate. And that probably led him to not want to negatively critique movies anymore. I doubt it has much to do with kissing up to producers.
