You won’t believe this, but I just watched this with Barrie Chase, who very much enjoyed watching it. She is still spry, lovely and engaging, you might be pleased to know. She didn’t remember ever seeing it, only dancing it. She still has the graceful moves!
From doing the runaround with Adele on the Broadway stage to this 30 years later- smarter, neater and cooller than the best of Fosse and Verdon. No wonder, as Baryshnikov joked, hoofers 'hated' Astaire. Every time you thought you were up with this man, he forged ahead of you.
Jonah Jones was in Fred's first two TV specials, obviously channeling Satchmo but with his own merits. It was typical of Fred, always hip to black talent, to make Jones his sole guest star on an expensive show backed with his own money- despite risking a boycott by network affiiiates in the segregated South. In the event viewers everywhere wanted to see how Fred would tackle the tube. The genial Jones played a front cloth sketch with Astaire besides a session with his combo, and impressed enough to return in the sequel, 'Another Evening'. This somewhat macabre concept has Hermes Pan's handwriting all over it, and David Rose's orchestration of the old blues, from a lament to an upbeat resurrection, is right in line. Chase seizes every young dancer's dream chance of busting loose from the chorus. Fred easily overcomes the age gap that had fretted him since 'The Belle of New York'. His trip to Burbank was an unalloyed triumph. PS: On reflection, you can see why Pan lasted and Busby Berkeley flared out. Berkeley, with his morbid streak, would have left the gal on the slab at the finish. Pan makes Fred inject new life into her. He and Fred were upbeat guys.
@@gwenniegirl50 Her problem was that of all young dancers from the mid-Fifties onward. Not enough regular, modestly conceived musicals were being made to give them opportunities. The ex-Broadway roadshow behemoths such as 'My Fair Lady' and 'Sound of Music' were more about singing than inventive hoofing.
I wish she was after the money, then she would allow his work to be used/shown for large amounts of money. She wants to keep him to herself, which is worse. She was like that even when he was still alive, cutting him off from his friends and family.

Hi Barry! Say hi to Barrie!
I certainly will, next time I see her. See really enjoyed watching the video. And now she knows what RUclips is!
❤❤
And can we just say thanks to whomever preserved this early color videotape (NOT A TELECINE) making the quality excellent.
Tell Ms. Chase we all love her and her work!
The world is a better place because of these people. How exciting it must have been to see this on television for the first time!
It took a clean sweep of entertainment Emmys. The most decorated TV special ever.
Spectacular talent. No one like Fred Astaire. Barry Chase was a great partner. How I wish I could move like that. 😊
Miraculous for a 59-year-old gentleman. And yet he danced like this for many years yet to come.
As far as I know Barrie is still alive (age 91 in 2024)
F.A. best dancer ever! perfect timing!!

Wow! Music come alive in smooth moves that massages the veins of my 💖. Beautiful!
Who ever has the original video tape of An Evening With Fred Astaire needs to get it digitalized before this treasure deteriorates out of existence.
His widow doesn't allow that, so there's that.
Already done. Shows are not on DVD or streaming distribution. But it's available in full on other video platforms as of 2023.
@@dw438woah! where?
So cool‼️My wife and I are meeting Barrie Chase tomorrow.
I just made a tribute video for her and Fred, if you wanna check it out.

From October 1958 I believe. First color tv special videotaped at nbc’s new full color Burbank studios.
Another great video. Thank you.
Thanks so much for posting this! It is a sad situation as you have written about above. Hopefully it won't be for much longer.
WOW!!
Astaire live on stage...audience reaction...😊
Astaire, 59.
Amazing they were already doing chroma-key (aka green-screen) effects on videotape back then.
I loved watching Fred and Ginger but Barrie Chase is far beyond better than Ginger. She is truly a joy to watch !
she was also in White Chrisrmas at age 19 last public dance for fred was with her in1968
Actually, not quite. He did quite a number for the 1970 Academy Awards show. It's here somewhere with millions of views.
I can't believe how beautiful and talented she is.
@@bobbybecker6435 yes Barrie Chase was underrated. Deserved more recognition.

Wonderful and brilliant .. Barrie Chase - the only dancer who matched Fred Astair ... and maybe even better. ----> (go to 2:35)
Astaire was nearly 60 at this point. Chase was in her 20’s. Maybe she outdanced him a little.
COLOR? For 1958? WOW!
First major TV recording in color.
NTSC
Classic...Artie Shaw records...watch this version...😅
Remember in that horrible character aside Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear
SAD HIS WIFE IS SO SELFISH...MAYBE SHE WANTS A PIECE OF THE PIE....MONEY I MEAN....

@@MyLovelyDeadFriends How very sad and selfish. I hope all that changes soon.
