    My father and grandfather taught me the value of shoehorns. Grandpa had been educated in a Christian Brother School in Ireland about as well as was possible for an Irish Catholic under British rule. When he came to America he ended up being a bellhop in high end hotels. As a job requirement, and also because he learned from his clients, he learned how to dress properly. Among my lessons as a kid were shoehorns and how to care for shoes along with a wide variety of ways to properly tie a tie. You don't need to be rich or from a rich background to learn the value of this. I have a friend whose grandfather was a Pullman porter in the days when that was about the most prestigious and well paying job most Black men could get. He taught his sons and grandsons the same lessons as my grandfather did.
    My understanding from my grandfather is that the older shoehorns were made from animal horn. He did have a couple of them. Better than most or all plastic due to its smoothness and flexible strength and often with a long wooden handle for use when standing up they've been difficult to find at any reasonable cost during most of my lifetime.

    Shoe horns are 100% worth it. I'm pretty lazy with my daily drivers, don't usually both tying/untying and split on/off but with a shoehorn, the heel portion has last well over a year now, normally I tear it up quickly.

      Make sure you don't let the horn touch the insole of any footwear you use it with. I damaged my Puma Suede insole with a Waproo stainless steel model this way. Simply slide your heel in and slide out the horn at the same time.

I honestly had no idea they were made from water buffalos. I am a shoe and sneaker freak and I can't believe I never owned a shoe horn. I'm buying my first one from Gentleman's Gazette right away along with those amazing socks. I also watched Preston's on-stage performance today too. Thank you so much for such a classy video as always! I wasn't sure 18 minutes was necessary for a shoe horn until I watched the whole thing!

    Just for the record, back in Ye Olde Corset-Wearing Tymes, you put on your shoes BEFORE your corset or stays, thus avoiding the issues that Preston seems so concerned with at 4:30. 😆And that went for everybody, since men wore them as well. Of course, those with maids/valets *could* have shoes applied afterward if they so wished, but in general you just put them on first.

    At the school I went to (where shoes were concerned, black Oxford lace ups) we were issued with a shoehorn and a wooden cotton reel. I asked my housemaster what the cotton reel was for and he replied without hesitation, it was to measure the loops in my shoelaces to make sure they were even. Shoe polishing with the laces removed was also mandatory three times a week. Standards of a bygone era.

    Great video I just wish people would value getting their feet measured properly. I wore the wrong size shoes for a long time and never understood why my toes pinched; turns out I had a long foot and short toes so I moved up from a size 9 to a size 11 and my feet have been happier ever since.

    • @brianmccarthy5557

      I agree. I was long told I was a 10 1/2 shoe size. When shopping at a Marshall's in their assortment of shoes aisle I tried on a size 12 and was truly comfortable in a shoe for the first time. That seems to be my true size and all my shoes fit well now. Never entirely trust a shoe salesman or their measuring devices. Trust your own perceptions of a comfortable fit.

    I don't recall listening to this benefit of a shoe horn. When standing or sitting. A shoe horn allows your socks to remain straight. If you pick up your leg and cross it over your other leg or pick up your heel to pull on your shoe you more often than not rotate your sock on your leg. Shoe horns allow your feet to sit naturally while putting on your shoe.

  • @Aggnog
    @Aggnog 2 года назад +2

    For me the biggest factor is thickness and flexibility. Most plastic shoe horns are too stiff and break easily. I've found the long plastic one from ikea does well since it's pretty flexible. The best one I have is a very thin metal shoehorn at no more than 0.5mm thickness. Some shoes are hard to get into with a thicker shoehorn if the heel cup is less wide than the actual heel counter area, or if the instep is on the low side, especially if you are just starting to wear a new pair that hasn't broken in.

    I only recently started using shoehorns. I got tired of always tying and untying my boots and sneakers, and I found that using shoehorns made getting dressed for going out so much easier and quicker, with the added bonus of my shoes lasting longer. However I only have a cheap, plastic shoehorn that comes apart at the handle. I have to keep tucking it back together again. Considering it's so extremely low quality to begin with (it probably costed me a whopping 2 dollars or something) I could probably put it back together with duct tape and it wouldn't make it look any worse than it did when new. It would be nice with a proper shoehorn though, and maybe I could try to craft one out of wood.

    You didn’t mention one key aspect (for me at least) which is the curve of the shoe horn. Different shoes have different width on the heels as well as different materials used as heel stiffeners. On my Crocket & Jones a classic plastic shoe horn works, which is usually a fairly wide model. On my Enzo Bonafé which has a narrower and more stiff heel it does not work at all, for those shoes I need a shoe horn with a deeper curve.

    • @Gilamath.
      @Gilamath. 2 года назад +2

      While waiting for the video, here’s a bit of advice in the meantime. First, keep in mind that neckties have their roots in scarves. Consequently, you will find that ties will feel most natural and appropriate in the cold. You can take things a step further and wear a collared shirt and tie with a wool or perhaps cotton v-neck sweater
      Second, if you want to wear a tie with just a shirt and trousers, I would suggest reconsidering. Ties are an awkward garment. They have a dual reputation for both formality and uselessness. Wearing ties for ties’ sake will play into that somewhat odd, unfavorable reputation. Some people will do it anyway and either overcome or embrace that, but if you don’t feel you have the skill for that just yet, you should consider wearing ties with jackets, sweaters, or vests. These options defeat the natural awkwardness of a tie and allow its nicer qualities to shine
      Ties are odd pieces of fabric that form a large, noticeable knot at the neck, then flare out and dangle down to the belt. What a strange thing to put on your body! But if you know what you’re doing, ties start looking natural and lovely. Context isn’t everything, but it’s close. Speaking of which, it’d be easier to give more specific advice if you wouldn’t mind giving a little more information about you and your circumstances
