I’ve just bought myself a 2008 diesel Pajero for 13k with all the bells and whistles bolted on including a 2” Lift with airbags in the rear and a bull bar with a winch installed. I bought it because my parents have a 2014 Pajero and they have pulled their caravan around Australia multiple times. The only mod they did for towing was put airbags in the rear to stop it squatting when the caravan was on. Other than that their Pajero is 100% stock and with good maintenance they have never had a problem with the car.
Just a suggestion from a follow Pajero owner, as standard the trailer plug is underslung on the bracket and, as you've found, can get damaged. I've flipped mine over to the top of the bracket and haven't a any further issues. Yes, it's technically upside down but it works better for me.
As others have said, mount the trailer plugs on top of the bracket. A quality 2 inch suspension lift with HD rear springs and airbags allows the tow hitch to be fitted the right way up, thereby solving the door opening issue while keeping the rig level and improving the good ride even further. Very happy with my 2014.
I changed the plugs last week and it doesn't work because the lids can't open properly against the body, heaps of potential in the paj though for sure. It's money in the way of the ultimate set up but still very good for us 👌
Pajero’s are a great touring vehicle and can be made even better with a decent suspension upgrade. Our old NM had a 40mm tough dog lift and it was the best mod I’d done to the vehicle. It helped to alleviate some of the cons you’ve mentioned in your video. I towed our Jayco camper thousands of kilometres on dirt roads around Australia and never had an issue with the vehicle or the camper other than small issues that could be fixed on the road. The only thing that couldn’t be fixed was the fuel consumption. The NM was a 3.5 litre V6 that consistently returned over 18 litres per 100 with the camper on. The worst being 40 litres per 100 on a sand track into a headwind. At 300k she finally gave up and haemorrhaged all over the garage floor after getting home from a long trip. Engine oil everywhere, but at least she made it home. We now have an NX diesel to which we again fitted a suspension lit, this time Kings springs with Bilstein shocks, a superb contrast to the standard suspension and the tough dog on the NM. It hasn’t done the big trips yet, but I’m sure it will handle it as well if not better than the NM. Both were Exceeds and the trim level is similar.
A 2 inch OME suspension kit provided much better towing and firm controllable ride over standard in my NP that is still running strong at 330k. Love the vehicle, great build quality and reliability.
Hey mate I have a 2006 NP Diesel with the original bars in the roof, do you have any suggestions for a low profile roof rack (maybe remove the side bars to if possible) ... Thanks❤
Hi mate, we got a rhino roof rack which is pretty low profile. On our ranger just fitted a San Hima which has been good. I'd recommend checking those out as the profile is similar is heigh. Also have a discount and code will review soon 👍
Great vid mate, as a Pajero owner I thank you for the information, had the same, issue with rear tyre, got a plate that lifted it 50mill. Makes so much difference and I can open the back door and it hits nothing
Hi Two ways of overcoming Rear Door opening You can get an adaptor plate to lift the spare wheel 50mm Or Do what I Did Remove the roll pin stop on your Park Brake and the Handle will drop right Down Flat Good luck Gerry
We have a 2020 Pajero model and also tow a trailer GVM 1800kg. To help two of your issues we fitted airbags inside the rear coils. This raises the rear 10mm when hitched to the trailer. We then had a bracket made to raise the spare wheel 75mm. You need to remove the top plastic piece from the spare wheel cover in order to do this. It unscrews quite easily. This of course means that the top of the spare wheel is not covered over. However one can now easily hitch the trailer and also open the back door of the car.
@@johnmcnocher1761 yeah Roger that, we did get airbags after this video but still had a bit of sag but it was much better. The rear tyre plate was something that was suggested but didn't have the money to do it, suffered instead 😁 Thanks for checking out our video and channel mate 🍻
A very useful video. I haven't got a 4x4 yet, just an AWD but my next car will be a 4X4, getting ready for retirement and the big lap. But I have not heard a bad word about the Pajero and so is high on my list also boosted by your vids. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks moike! It has come up quite a bit and I remember it being a big decision for our first 4wd and relied on information myself so hopefully it's helpful for people like yourself. We are really happy with the paj and it's a good option without forking a fortune 👍
Thanks for the video, just honest information. As far as the plug connection for the trailer I flipped mine over to the top. The headlights are OK, but decided to try some recommended LED's in the low beams. Can't tell you how impressed I was at the clarity of light, and extra light to the sides when driving. Easier on the eyes and definitely a safer drive. Will replace high beam with them as well in time as they take the same bulb. H11 from memory, comes as a KIT with a short lead as well to make it easier to fit.
Thanks mate! Have done a few upgrades since this video, notably I did flip the plug over like you said it was after losing another one 😂 Also have put on spottys, rear roof lights, both have done videos for recently, and just today put hd shocks and installed airbags last week which videos should come through soon. Heading up to ningaloo area this coming week so the new gear will get tested and really interested to the performance difference. I am looking at led for the headlights like you mentioned, great to hear there is a good return on them. Thanks for dropping me a line mate 🍻
Thanks for your thoughtful reply mate, let me know if you have trouble choosing the H11's KIT. Mine was ebay $40. I,ve had this version, recommended by other Pajero owners in low beam for some time with no issue.(3yrs) And now will change Hi beams to LED (H11)allowing me to swap around from low to high should an issue arise with a broken unit on the road. My kings light bar stopped working 2 trips ago...surprise🤣So I'm sure the upgraded high beams will regain some of the lost lighting. Enjoy Ningaloo, we are headed for Fraser.@@gettingaroundaus
I just bought a Hayman Reese 350mm from pin to ball tow hitch from Super Cheap. It's rated to 3500kg. Made a big difference to opening rear door and interference to spare tyre.
@gettingaroundaus Yeah, I have a poly block on mine and you could only just pull the pin out with the standard tow hitch. As i need it upside down to level my camper.
Thanks for putting up the content. Like others have said, you are past due a 50mm suspension upgrade. I am running a 2013 NW, and towing an MDC Forbes 13, I run the exact tyres that you have, I have the tow bar up the correct way and the Pajero loves it, she sits level and I can open my rear door over the hitch (DO35) and handbrake lever, but this wouldn’t be possible without my suspension upgrade (OME 50mm from ARB). I totally agree with your positives, and think all of your negatives will be solved with a suspension upgrade. You should check out the Lovells rear suspension upgrade that will also increase your ball weight.
Thanks Brett! Had a few quotes and others don't get back to you which unfortunately has been common with some mods we have done How heavy is the Forbes? It's a nice van
The Forbes is a great van, we love it. Tare 2090kg, ATM 2800kg, ball weight 150kg approximately depends on gas jerry's and water etc. I try to keep the ATM around the 2500kg.
Yeah it makes it just a little bit easier to manage doesn't it, had no idea there was so much room for loading, from the research we did it's rare in a van to have that much payload
Hey Diesel. As has been mentioned here in the comments by many others, a 2” suspension will most likely fix a lot of the problems you covered in your video. Again as has already been suggested here, AirBag Man (the high pressure 60PSI version) will afford you adjustability of your camper trailer depending on your load at the time. I have installed a pre-rego 2” Dobinsons suspension 3.5T GVM upgrade (as commissioned by Malaga Suspensions in WA) on my Prado and tow a 15ft (3T ATM) hybrid caravan (yet to get a professional weigh done fully loaded) with HP AirBag Man airbags in the rear and have had no problems. I also have a similar ‘barn door’ (rear door) setup with spare tyre but don’t have any obstructions so can fully open the rear door. I’m also getting about 13L/100kms when towing but I’m yet to tow for any longer than about 2hrs of driving in a single stint so perhaps not a reliable indicator of fuel consumption
Feedback has been really helpful, your feedback is also really appreciated 👍 for us we're comparing prado vs Pajero but went with what we could afford and some terrible dealership service as well made it easy
So we got a 2” lift (king springs) and a different hitch that is straight and a little longer than the standard. This evened out our trailer and we installed Airbags. This also helped with opening the back door wider than what you are able too.
I did that last week but found the door for the Anderson plug doesn't open up without some persuasion. Likely going to change it back underneath and just deal with it, thanks for watching Peter 🍻
Air bags in the rear springs are a good choice, you can adjust the ride height to match whether the vehicle is towing or not, and they aren't expensive either.
We have got a few quotes for them but in WA they are charging a fair bit and want to change everything else, been a challenge to get a simple breakdown so far but we'll keep working through it

I have a 2018 triton. we haven't towed anything with it yet as we can't make up our minds what to buy a caravan or a camping trailer. The triton is a 6-speed manual .
I have the same camper and 2010 paj so same car too. They are hands down the value family touring wagon you can buy. I must say your about the only person I have seem towing with one that doesnt have upgraded suspension. Amy car will sag with 200 plus kgs or ballweight on it.
Love your vids mate. A suspension lift/upgrade will benefit you in many ways, increase your arr/dep angles, less body roll/dip/squat too and generally feel more pleasant to drive over the stock suspension. Plus it will open up more possibilities of where you want to take the car. Ive just got the Koni/Kings combo for my NW rated for constant load.

We had the same issue as you did with your tow bar tongue ,a bit of sag also from stock suspension, but turning the tongue upwards has definitely helped 👍 I also think the Van tows better now as well.
@Getting Around Aus - Camper Trailer Travellin Yeah, I can see how annoying that would be.I had a Paj a few years ago and the rear door took a bit of getting used to.More space to open, you couldnt reverse into some spots lol and it being heavy etc 😃
i run a mc hitch as the door hit the handbrake handle not really that impressed with the mc hitch but its the only one i found what worked to let the back door fully open i tow a Jayco journey outback pop top 17.55-8 2016 gvm 2474 kg which i only load it to 2450kg ball weight 170kg the Pajero with two people inside no fancy stuff standard springs is 2700 kg seems to have no problem's so far , 17 l\ p 100 at 85 klm per hour that's my towing speed in 4th gear .tested a 200 Landcruiser my fuel went up to 24 l/p 100 klms towed about the same a little better only, in the market for a heavy duty rear springs standard lift was looking at pedders .

Yeah a bigger tank would be a treat with the excellent mileage! Just spend the first bit of cash on repairs on ours but also just done some really cool upgrades we'll share soon. Really appreciate you dropping a line mate 🍻
How much room is behind the plastic bumper? Maybe flush mount the outlets in that? A hole drilled in the wheel cover and a ockie strap will hold the cables up too if you want those up and away from harm..
Hi Ben, last week I mounted them on the top side of the plate, but it doesn't have the clearance. I am thinking about trying to fix onto the bumper. I did it on a previous vehicle so might work 🤞
Excellent video mate! I’m looking to get a Pajero for a family adventure car, towing a small van ( something like a jayco swan) and seeing Australia! Also something to tow the 1.8T excavator and plant trailer around ( ATM 2500kgs)
😮 I’ve never towed anything before & just bought my first Pajero! I will tow a horse float soon and will have my towbar & electrics installed soon and wondering what to say to them about that low hanging problem? And any other Pajero newbie towing tips 😊
It hasn't really been an issue but I check it out first and see how it is and then consider whether a suspension upgrade is what you want to do. Talked to a few that have real big Caravans with suspension upgrades and it doesn't even look like there a trailer on the the car 😂 You'll be really happy with it. We also increase the rear tyre pressure to 50 psi when towing for more rear support. 45 on front
@@gettingaroundaus We went on a trip from SA up to Cairns towing the van . Both of us had trouble with the seats. We bought some Cousens from supercheap , which made a big difference for the trip home.

I have a 2011 NW Pajero and tow a Coromal 455 semi offroad poptop caravan. It's also fitted with a Steinbauer injection controller which provides a longer injection period instead of higher fuel pressure for an estimated 20% improvement in torque. I've also added an EVC Throttle Controller which makes the vehicle much more responsive to the accelerator position. It's adjustable as to sensitivity also to suit the driver or situation. i run a mc hitch as the door hit the handbrake handle not really that impressed with the mc hitch but its the only one i found what worked to let the back door fully open i tow a Jayco journey outback pop top 17.55-8 2016 gvm 2474 kg which i only load it to 2450kg ball weight 170kg the Pajero with two people inside no fancy stuff standard springs is 2700 kg seems to have no problem's so far , 17 l\ p 100 at 85 klm per hour that's my towing speed in 4th gear .tested a 200 Landcruiser my fuel went up to 24 l/p 100 klms towed about the same a little better only, in the market for a heavy duty rear springs standard lift was looking at pedders .
@@alanhughes1262 about 6 months ago we put on heavy duty shocks, but it's all a funny game isn't it.
Get a little bit here and loose a little something there, can't have it all can we 😂
Thankfully my NT came with 17" steel wheels. 88litre tank much better than 68litre in the Paj Sport. 340k now and only thing broken has been a drive belt.
Couldn't recommend highly enough! Done us great 👌👍 really appreciate the feedback 🍻
Great video thanks!
Cheers Jayrad! 🍻
Great vid.
Thanks mate! Appreciate you watching and dropping a line 👍 🍻
Air bags for sure and maybe move the handbrake handle 😊
Airbags are the dream but have to see how we go for moola 😁
😮 I’ve never towed anything before & just bought my first Pajero! I will tow a horse float soon and will have my towbar & electrics installed soon and wondering what to say to them about that low hanging problem? And any other Pajero newbie towing tips 😊
It hasn't really been an issue but I check it out first and see how it is and then consider whether a suspension upgrade is what you want to do.
Talked to a few that have real big Caravans with suspension upgrades and it doesn't even look like there a trailer on the the car 😂
You'll be really happy with it. We also increase the rear tyre pressure to 50 psi when towing for more rear support. 45 on front
Have you thought of new front seats mine are so hard, 2018 Exceed.
Hmmm can't say we have and just thinking about pretty happy with them. Maybe the driver can be a hard on the bum but the passengers feels ok. 🤞
@@gettingaroundaus We went on a trip from SA up to Cairns towing the van . Both of us had trouble with the seats.
We bought some Cousens from supercheap , which made a big difference for the trip home.
Interesting, I guess we all like different seats as well but geez for a trip Ike that you want help your ass don't you 😂
@@gettingaroundaus Yeah need to look after your ass. It's my 4th Pajero Exceed and its got the hardest seats of all of them.
Perhaps try placing your tyre up on the roof rack to solve your issue of opening the rear door
Yeah thought about it but need to put other stuff up there and we just live with it 👍
Or one of those swing out tyre holders
Yeah I'll look into it but likely we'll just deal with it 👍
brilliant.
Cheers Journo! 🍻
Trailer plugs are mounted incorrectly. Should be on top of the bar
That's exactly what I did a little while after this thanks to some feedback 👍
Thanks for putting vid together. I have the spare wheel lift mod fitted and have no issues with the rear wheel clearance. Also have King Springs KCRS-35 in the rear, beautiful for towing with no sag. Thanks again mate👍
No worries Tony, we are still going through suspension options ourselves and likely will land on something soon 🍻
Just throw in some 1000 series Air Lift air bags. That will take care of the sag.
We actually have some airbag man airbags in the post! Also some shocks just landed 😁 install video will come out in a bit but pretty exciting
@@gettingaroundaus nice! We are having s hurricane currently and I stepped out to check the house and yard while the wife continued to watch the video so I must have missed it.
I have the Lovells HD springs and Rancho 9000s in the rear and that is a great combo.
@@Doc_Martin_Monty sounds pretty solid, this video a couple of months ago, the suspension upgrades have only been locked in this couple of weeks,
Should improve the towing alot I hope you we have a big trip coming up in a few weeks so we'll definitely find out 😁
Where abouts are you? Hope y'all safe
@@gettingaroundaus sounds good! We are in central Florida. The hurricane just passed right by us. Minimal issues
@@Doc_Martin_Monty great to hear, stoked you tuned in to check our video out 👍🍻
I have a 2011 NW Pajero and tow a Coromal 455 semi offroad poptop caravan. I've lifted the rear door 50mm to assist with access whilst towing too. Very happy with the vehicle and hasn't let me down since I purchased it 3 years ago, it's now got 180,000klm's. I found the option to use the auto as a manual when towing a great benefit especially around hilly country. All the best from Queensland.
Yep totally agree. Only adjusted into manual while towing uphill a couple of times. I prefer to use it as is 👍
Use a spare wheel lifter
Yeah I got a quote for one but just settled on leaving it 👌
Ain’t those trailers got a 350 kg tow ball weight ; the Pajero normally only 3t an only a 300 kg tow ball weight
Hi mate, guess it depends on how much it's loaded. Camper has a atm of 2400kgs so unlikely to be the case for me 👍
Sell it and buy a Fortuner - (insert “oh no he didn’t” sassy woman waving her fingers!)
😂 What's a fortuner?
Saw this on spare wheel lift kit on RUclips (ruclips.net/video/O3llJc_BN1Y/видео.htmlsi=wooP02NkfzII4Og3 ). May help with your rear door opening issue.
Cheers mate! Very bloody good idea because pretty bloody annoying!
