I have seen them all... over and over... this just can't compare to the others... it is so authentic... the acting, the playing, even the idea of the awakening in the morning, thinking it had been a dream, the "karma" scene in Millcote... brilliant... so very genuine... beautiful
Whatever they say, for me this is invariably the best couple. I can feel their love so powerful, so real, and other factors just no longer matter anymore...
This was my first Jane Eyre! As awkward as this kiss is, I have a soft spot for this version BECAUSE it was my first and introduced me to the book, and the many different film/television adaptations. I remember being floored by the description of being attached by "strings" tied within each other's ribs, and how he expressed taking to bleeding inwardly. It's beautiful.
And then she went on to play the psycho Alpha in Walking Dead, which she was magnificent as.. such a trip to see her in such different roles like that and each so believable.
I don't get the mustache either. I always pictured Rochester with somewhat of a five o'clock shadow. But Ciaran's eyes are perfect. Dark and expressive.
Never mind that mustache! It'll be better if you 'll take a good look at the girl performing Adel's role. She and Mr Hinds have identical faces. Don't you agree?
Oh it's just fabulous! I love all the versions for variety of reasons but here the awkwardness of two passionate souls finally giving reign to their feelings comes over loud and clear. Bravo!
This is my favorite version of this book. The proposal scene gives me goosebumbs everytime I watch since I first saw it nearly in 1997 when I first saw it on PBs. Thank you for posting it!
Awwww y’all are waiting too? HaaaHaaaa!!! I’m literally on my porch with my Whiskey just waiting for him to come by, I don’t need a ring, a simple glance and I’ll be his!
this is the BEST Jane Eyre movie EVER... the proposal scene is absolutely UNBEATEN !!! just WOW !!!!! absolutely BRILLIANT acting, realistic, powerful, dramatic !!!!!!!!!! God, this is the true thing
I could watch this scene over and over and I do :) its so nice to see people on here who share my love of this version most people hate it. What do they know!?
No idea if you'll see this, but This is THE version! I love it. The genuine emotion, the total understanding of the turmoil their characters are living. I love this version. I have no idea how many times I've watched this film! ❤ 👍
As we may all agree that the scenario is either a bit or way diffirent from this of the original text of the novel, it's not the case only for this movie adaptation. Yet, what makes this the best is the chemistry of this couple, the passion that is not to be felt in no other adaptation coz this couple is the closest to this one in the novel especially Rochester's temper and Jane's plainess, truthfulness, and unexperience. In short, of all the adaptations I've scene, this is the most authentic and touching one.
I’m still partial to the 1983 version, primarily because it covers more of her time after leaving Rochester. Especially the struggle she undergoes, and her self-determination in another environment. It fleshes out Jane’s character in a way that most adaptations don’t, as the romance normally takes center stage.
Everyone has their favorite adaptation, but this will always be my favorite. 2011 version had some amazing cinematography, but it seemed so watered down until the end. This was consistently good till the end. Samantha Morton is amazing.
I find this version of jane eyre amusing and funny. Timothy dalton's mr. Rochester so far the most romantic, and the one starring michael fassbender extremely Gothic. I'll go for Ciaran Hind's Rochester anytime.
This is my favorite version of Jane Eyre. Ciaran Hinds is an incredible and talented actor. This scene never fails to move me to tears. Of course, I have all versions of Jane Eyre!! Love it!!
I'm going to be honest here and say that I wasn't a fan of this version (and I've watched every single version) However recently I've grown to actually like it. The actors show passion and love between the characters and although it's not true to the book, I think it's a good adaptation because I actually believe they are genuinely in love. Obviously Jane wouldn't know how to kiss because she's never had that closeness with a man like that but Mr Rochester is so in love with her, that he simply doesn't care. What was everyone's first kiss like? Mine was certainly not toe curling or heart thumping.
Mycroft Holmes well it was because of Truth or Dare. Honestly, not a big deal. Since then I’ve kissed another guy that I actually liked on multiple occasions and we started going out! Trust me, it’s not a big deal and even if you’re 20 your time will come. But I have to say you’re not missing out on too much :)
This is exactly my opinion funnily enough and seems to be widely shared. A bit of distance and separation from the first watch does a world of good it seems.
The one with Timothy dalton is closer ro the book. Even snatches of the dialogue, With the "dammit" at the end, and when jane brushed mr Rochester s hair was included.
I remember watching this movie in Elgnish class once. The whole class including I loved this movie. We even cheered at this scene, and at the end aswell ^^
To me, this is the best adaptation of the book and very underrated. All the other Rochester's and Jane's are either too dramatic or flat (in my opinion) and I think these two get it just right! 👌I always felt that in the novel Mr Rochester was quite humorous at times and this adaptation captured it perfectly 😊
I like this version. I have seen all the versions of Jane Eyre and read the books. As a young girl, it was my favourite book. The first version I saw was with George C. Scott and Susannah York-it was my first and my favourite until I saw the version with Michael Fassbender and I love this version the best. I enjoyed every version I have seen and I find that they add to my appreciation of the book.
This is the first version Jane Eyre I've watched and I dont know why peoplw are hating on this version. Ive already watched the 1983 version and I still think this version is still pretty good
He is by far one of the best Mr. Rochester's that I have seen. His temperment alone is perfect for the role, he plays arrogant exceedingly well. And she is excellent. Dalton while very good looking, was just tooo good looking, and he was soft, oh he tried to sound viscious, but it was not very convincing.
Oh, come on people...there are some parts of this adaption which are VERY good. In particular, the score throughout is beautiful...it really moves the story, especially the reunion scene. This was the first adaption of Jane Eyre I ever seen when I was a little girl, and is the reason I remembered the story. To then go on and read the FANTASTIC novel.
For all this version's flaws, I really love this scene and how hurried it is. Heightens the passionate tension considerably. Okay, the kiss IS awkward, but...I'm just about positive it's intentionally so. I mean, he swoops in and plants one on a total innocent. She would have been overwhelmed, and the second kiss would not have looked more adept.
I really like this scene. It's meant to be uncomfortable; she's in her late teens and he's in his forties. In the book he refers to her as his 'child bride'. At this point, they are still unequal and this scene really emphasises that. It also plays on Jane's complete lack of sexual experience and Rochester's overwhelming sexuality. From what I've seen of this version, the awkwardness and surprise of them falling in love is much better. Whilst this Rochester is less attractive (really don't like the moustache, I don't care how period it is), he isn't meant to be. If he is very good looking, it looks too manipulative. Jane may be plain but she has youth and freshness on her side whereas Rochester is damaged goods.
The mustache is NOT period; only military men wore mustaches like that one, and they were jealous enough about the decoration to actually challenge those who shouldn't have been wearing one. In the book, he is 35 or 37, not over 40. Jane's shell-shocked upbringing has her severely introverted, she is definitely 'damaged goods' and Rochester is depraved to the level that it takes a serious maiming and complete blindness to render him able to honestly account for his time and actions in a reliable way. (Imagine his end-of-story self flirting or seducing new mistresses, for example.) To me, this is a sad story with a happy ending.
He is the truest to the way I imagined Rochester from the book. He was the most believable from all the other actors in Jane Eyre film adaptations. Just my humble opinion.
Where did I get the idea that he was 38 when they met and Jane was 18. I thought he was twenty years older...... I LOVE something about this Rochester I need to watch the others again though.
I agree. I like Edward as the wounded, morose and enigmatic misanthrope. Not charming beautiful gorgeous sexy Ciaran Hinds. Hinds in Above Suspicion is closer to Edward than this young Hinds. Still, I couldn't take my eyes off the dude.
Judith Randall Hinds Was fantastic in persuasion. Captain Wentworth was perfect for him. No he just doesn’t work as Mr. Rochester. The man is a good actor and I think he could probably play anyone but this is not his finest work and this is the casting director’s fault. The woman doesn’t have the youth that Jane would’ve had. Moreover no one can find the plain Jane that we all love.
@@hockeygirl8401 Yes, he was gorgeous in Persuasion. But if you haven't already, you must see him in the 2009 British TV series, "Above Suspicion"; however, the first 20 minutes are brutal so you might want to skip that. He's much older and heavier and plays a present day macho police detective. But the relationship between he and his new young pretty recruit is terribly sexy and oddly romantic. Women have put together clips of this series with different love songs and they're terrific.

But the beginning - the first touch of their lips - wasn't bad at all! I'd say it was so sweet when she closed her eyes. But, of course, Mr Hinds exaggerated, made the scene a sort of theatrical thar movement of his head!
@MadameChristie Well, I like it very much. I think Ciaran Hinds is a very good Rochester, but his moustache. He's passionate, vehement, sarcastic and hard... as Mr. Rochester. And I think Samantha is the best Jane, refering to appearance.
I don't like mustachioed men))) I first was not able to watch this version of the mustache of Mr. Rochester. But later I watched it. And in the end, this version has become one of my favorite versions.
I don't think the actors are awkard kissers - it's a director choice IMO. It's stupid to have all this passion but then kiss with sealed lips like the 2006 Jane Eyre - it's not realistic. They would kiss with passion but actors can't mack down heavy duty on A&E - but the characters WOULD have. So they do this open mouth, heaving bosom, too excited-to-get-your-act-together choice. It works IMO.
I like the proposal scene BUT it seems to me that the actor pauses, and then belts out " . . . . the happiest man on earth!" because he knows it's such a corny, over-used line.
@@hannahmotta4908 Nope, you definitely were not the only one. From the open mouths missing each other to the end of the scene, where he suddenly swings himself into her left shoulder/neck, the physical stuff was kind of strange.
@@whitequeen96 I think they were tryna be passionate but they really seemed to miss the mark on this. Hinds is a great actor but damn he just came across as really angry in this version.😬
@@hannahmotta4908 I agree with you on that. He just didn't seem very attractive to me in any way. Watch Timothy Dalton in the 1983 version; you'll fall in love!
I feel like Samantha and Ciaran are the closest to the characters in the book...Jane looks very, very young, and Rochester isn't Mr. Handsome, as he is usually portrayed in other films (not that Ciaran is bad looking). And their passion and acting is spot on. I like many other versions of Jane Eyre, and I haven't seen all of this one, but the actors do an amazing job from what I've seen. Thanks for uploading!!!!
Lenore Webb also this version has the best Mrs Fairfax, the best Adelle, Grace Pool, Blanche and St John. They look exactly how I imagined them when I first read the book.
Very beautiful, I love these scenes and Samantha is perfect...😍🥰❤ I like when she says "I have everything I want right here!" because this is want I feel when I look at you Bastien my love!
Mr. Rochester really is being a bit of a beast to bait Jane like that, even though I realize he's doing it out of desperation because he knows she loves him and is trying to make her admit it.
I've always liked Ciaran Hinds' Rochester the best. I love this scene. Samantha Morton is excellent, though the kiss (the second one) always felt awkward to me. I often close my eyes just then to imagine a different one.
So many comments about how Rochester should be this or Jane should be that. The best way to get the Rochester and Jane that you imagine is to stick with the novel and the versions you have in your imagination. A movie is not a novel. Even a movie that is based on a novel is still a movie, a different work than the novel on which it is based. There is no obligation for a director to follow the novel in detail.
Ciaran Hinds is a magnificent actor. Such great passion in his delivery of his words. He might very well my favorite Mr. Rochester ❤
Definitely.....😍 my favourite Mr.Rochester

@@whitequeen96 that Timothy Dalton version and the Toby Stephen's one are hands down my faves!😍
I’m sorry but some of those lines were so awkward. When he’s like “Edward”. I cringed so hard. Like not the line. The deliverance lol
Very beautiful, I love these scenes and Samantha is perfect...😍🥰❤ I like when she says "I have everything I want right here!" because this is want I feel when I look at you Bastien my love!
I love this movie whit Samantha Morthon and Ciaran Hinds
@TwistedRose17 It's "present" in French. In fact he says "a petit cadeau", which means "a little present".
Mr. Rochester really is being a bit of a beast to bait Jane like that, even though I realize he's doing it out of desperation because he knows she loves him and is trying to make her admit it.
The last dialogue from mr.rochester: cheque please! We need to leave pronto
I've always liked Ciaran Hinds' Rochester the best. I love this scene. Samantha Morton is excellent, though the kiss (the second one) always felt awkward to me. I often close my eyes just then to imagine a different one.
Esse é o primeiro beijo da Jane, ela é pura emoção, está nas nuvens...Lindo!!!
My favourite one is 1973's (I love Michael Jayston in that film), but I also like this very much!
Thanks for comment!
I love you Ciaran !
The best of them all 💓.
Yes, beautiful words!!
Ciaran handsome actor, commander, captain with testosterone aroma mixed with wild grass
