“You think because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little I am soulless and heartless? I have as much soul as you and full as much heart! And if god had granted me some beauty and much wealth I’d have made it as hard for you to leave me right now as it is for me to leave you.” My favorite line in the entire book.
When I was in 6th grade I did a book report on “Jane Eyre”. My stupid teacher thought that I was lying about having read it, so I gave him my dog eared well-thumbed copy of the book and asked him to open it to any page, read a sentence and I’d tell him what was going on in that scene. Happily for me, he opened it to this proposal scene which I loved so much that I’d memorized it. The look on his face when I gave the whole scene word for word and then explained what it meant was somewhere between confused that a 6th grader could actually read and understand an “adult” book and anger that he’d been shown up in front of the class. Just to make sure that he understood my message about the “grown up” books my next book report was on “Wuthering Heights”! As you can imagine I was not popular with this teacher! Thank you Brontë sisters!
Great story. Same thing happen to me with my hippy teacher who didn't think I read the lion the witch and the wardrobe. I was mad that he didn't think I read that book in a day, because A, I liked it so much, and B, he thought I wasn't smart enough. Felt good to show him up.
You and I should be friends. :D I just finished an audio adaptation of Wuthering Heights (utilizing the script from Lux Radio Theatre) and now I'm currently working on Jane Eyre (my own adaptation using dialogue from the novel)
Thank you CAT07032! When I taught 5th grade gifted and talented for all subjects I would tell my students about my experience in 6th grade. The story never failed to shock them. Unfortunately, I ran into my own version of my 6th grade teacher with some teachers at the middle school my students went to after they left 5th grade. The GT English teacher complained that my students already knew how to write research papers and were reading books like “Pride and Prejudice” and “David Copperfield”, so what was she was supposed to do with them? I gave her several suggestions, but she didn’t want to hear them. The math teacher complained that I’d already taught 6th grade math to my class which messed up his schedule. When I suggested that he teach my students pre-algebra you’d have thought that I’d asked him to teach calculus to kindergarteners! When I was a student I hated lazy teachers and teachers who refused to believe that students could be capable of doing work several grades above their age group, especially when they loved what they were learning and were motivated to learn more. We often hear about the poor kids who struggle with learning challenges, but we also need to talk about and help the really bright students who need to be challenged and stretched.

I can't imagine any other version ever topping this one. The acting was fantastic and let's face it, Timothy Dalton is one of the hottest men to ever live. Totally in his brooding, dark, handsome prime when this was made. SWOON! With that face and that voice... I'd do whatever that man said, lol.
Space Cat I actually think Orson Welles imo topped Dalton. In the book Rochester is not known hands on and suave. Dalton played the role well but I prefer wellses portrayal because I fell it kept more in line with the character.
I didn't either until I watched 1973 BBC production. That Rochester isn't as handsome but more passionate. Their production hit the novel on the nail as Jane narrates her story. It's worth watching just to see Rochester take Jane and kisses her saying I love you. 😁
I just read a book and the describing of mr. Rochester. Personally, I think Timothy fits perfectly! Athletic figure, dark hair and thick eyebrows, not small, noticeable nose… pretty mainly appearance. Book doesn’t say, that he wasn’t attractive at all, it’s says more that he didn’t fit this time standards of beauty. Also he was pretty popular with woman. And Jane said a couple of times that she thought of him as he is beautiful man. I think this series did a great job at casting, because Jane is also just perfect in this series. (Sorry for my not perfect English)
Yes! A commenter who understands that he wasn't "ugly" in the sense that he was hard to look at, but the standards at that time were very different from today's, and the language was too. Edward was a lady's man, but he wasn't the pale, prim prince that was considered a "beautiful" man back then.
I love the enigmatic, faintly triumphant expression on Rochester's face (thanks to Dalton) when Jane confesses that she's emotionally attached to him and doesn't want to leave him -- perfect!
Right!? His subtle changes in expression even just in his eyes make his portrayal so much more meaningful throughout the whole movie! You can almost feel what he's feeling!
Timothy Dalton is Bronte's Rochester. He brings the words to life. Everytime i read the book i can only see his face in every single page!!!! A real Master of acting. I'm in awe.
It's been 40 years since airing this version of "Jane Eyre" and it's still fantastic! Zelah and Dalton are both fantastic on their roles and made the story alive.
Not only did I love this version best of all but Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke were awesome together and the entire cast was amazing. But more than that this version is true to the source of Charlotte Bronte's writings..I've seen so many adaptations of Jane Eyre and let me tell you they're all very good in their own way, but nothing compares to this version. I love the language; I love the era. It was a different world, a different time.
I couldn't agree more.I believe that this is the best version of Jane Eyre.I have seen almost all the rest but this one is truly breathtaking and what can i say about Dalton's acting skills. He is absolutely marvelous in his interpretation of the role.Sometimes fierce and sometimes tender, just as the role demands it.
I just read this part of the book and watching all the versions of this particular scene. They really have followed the book word by word. Also the scenery, the night it took place..everything fits the book. Brilliant to watch for sure!
Many comments point out that Dalton is 'too hot' to be a credible Rochester. In fact, the preferred archetype for male beauty at that time would have been St. John Rivers. Dalton would have been 'Vulcan' to Rivers' 'Apollo.' In fact, we have Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' as the British cultural game-changer that made the whole idea of 'tall, dark and handsome' fit together in the same phrase. Just one more irony for this fantastic franchise. I just love this 1983 interpretation of the book. Well done!
nora22000 Thank you! Finally someone else realizes that Dalton was perfect because the cultural preference for male attractiveness at that time was the blond, Grecian Apollo, like St. John.
Yeah, I used to "overlook" how handsome he is because...let's be honest: I wouldn't have it any other way! (Oh, man I love watching and listening to his portrayal) *clears throat* moving on. This most recent time reading the book, I finally realized what you said! His characteristics aren't too far off from the way Rochester's specific features are described in the book. I think we all just take Jane's description of him as not being handsome and assume he can't be handsome at all.
Timothy Dalton is the finest, most talented actor to take over the screen. Not only his stunnig looks but his powerful skills and breathtaking presence. He is the essence legends are made of. Best Rochester ever!
As a musician I appreciate the rhythm in this actress' sentences, such as "No, Mr. Bricks, that must not be!" I really like her inflections.. And how she questions him as if reading a form in church before saying "yes" ;) Dalton was the best looking Rochester with the most beautiful voice. And this is the most romantic film (and version of this book) in history :))
(Fans self) Anyone else suddenly really warm? No? Just me? Good gods, Timothy Dalton was gorgeous in his prime. And he speaks those "waxing philosophically/poetically" lines beautifully.
I read it when I was 12. 7th grade of primary school here. It was like drug to me. I had to read it over and over. Now I am 37 and nothing changed. Then I saw this version and fell in love with it forever.
So much passion and despair on their faces! You are sure to feel how much they love! Perfect performance of both actors. Haven't seen anything more moving. Thank you Edward and Jane. I have been watching the film for the whole week, every evening and will do it again. Since we can hardly see such love in real life we can enjoy it in our favourite film.
My IQ just dropped ten percent after listening to Dalton. He doesn't have the usual sideburns I prefer on a Rochester, but damn, that voice - he sure makes Bronte's dialogue come alive!
The best version of all and can't be topped. And was there ever a movie with a more perfect score that seems to bring alive the era before the first word was ever said. Sometimes I watch the dvd just to hear the music. Bronte would have been impressed with this adaptation, i believe.
This scene and the scene where he waits for her after the non-wedding are an acting masterclass - I’ve read JE several times and TD absolutely nails everything about him. If he didn’t win an award for this portrayal he should have done.
I think Timothy Dalton's facial expressions when Jane Eyre is asking if Rochester is earnest are spot on- you can see the strange, nervous agitation described in the book.
В свою игру и Кларк и Далтон вкладывают всю душу и соответственно проникают в души зрителей до самых глубин.Вместе с артистами страдаешь,плачешь, радуешься.Этот фильм нельзя смотреть равнодушно.

He's well cast, even is miss Clarke. I adore this film/series but in the back of my mind I'm afraid I think, in real life, he would never propose to her. He, in real life, would think she's not good looking enough. I can't help to be a hopeless romantic and like these kind of movies very much but I'm also a cynical although I'd never had issues with men.
+Jane Julia Amen! It's too bad that Charlotte didn't end the novel with their wedding and that night together then the end. Dramatist Alexander Baron wrote BY THE NOVEL and did not say, to my knowledge. Have to read it over again but the ending is to each word Charlotte wrote! ¬ Janet Thompson Deaver
How this scene got me in simple steps 1) Tall, Dark, and Roguishly Handsome love interest (I'm aware Rochester is not supposed to be in the book, but I can't help it that it's Timothy Dalton) 2) Said love interest has a enchanting deep voice and suave personality 3) HEIGHT DIFFERENCES!!! 4) A gentle, yet very passionate kiss scene Well done, 1983 Jane Eyre. You get extra credit for making it two kiss scenes *turns away with fan*
I feel the same way! Dalton is a brilliant actor. Do u know he was Heathcliff in the other Bronte sister's story (Emily), Wuthering Heights? Oh man...you have to check it out!
The height difference is in keeping with the story since not only is Jane described as being little virtually from birth in the book -- Mrs. Reed describes her as being "puny" as an infant -- the deprivations which she experienced at Lowood would quite probably have stunted her growth even more.
They have a great chemistry! Iliked both of them and the actress had something that made her Jane)))Timothy is the best as always)))And it is my fav version!!!!!!
Never seen this adaptation but think I need to after seeing this! I love how jane is so together up until he says she must stay and then she gets angry at him and breaks her composure. Thats what i imagine her to be like. Too many janes do the whole scene with all guns blazing, i think this is much better
I know that Dalton does not match the character from the book since Rochester was supposed to be unattractive but I don't care looking at him here because that man is gorgeous!
When this novel was written, the standard was blond and fair. So Dalton, although gorgeous, doesn't fit the male beauty standards. It's why he gets upset when Jane describes another man she met as blond and fair.
Sheryl Porter That it is; and a little overwhelming and just shy of frightening - as the first encounter with true, deep, adult love usually is. Basically, Dalton is a perfect Rochester.
The morning after scene was my favorite scene with her running into the living room with her arms outstretched for him. too cute. plus Timothy Dalton is a fox.
Действительно,в наше не стабильное и не спокойное время,невозможно создать такую любовь и страсть,Зила и Тимоти непревзойденые,люблю их и обожаю всем сердцем и душой,здоровья им и процветания
I love this version over all the movies because of this, scene, the scene on the stairs, and when she comes bouncing down the morning after and jumps into his arms. Timothy Dalton probably was too handsome for the role but He is why I love this!!!!!
Melissa B. I agree totally. I also always go back to the final scenes. I love how he is able to change his voice and display his feelings so effortlessly. A truly fine actor that has a presence in every performance. Love TD. Made Jane Eyre really come alive for me❤️🌟
I agree! It's exactly as I imagined Rochester and Jane Eyre is one of the best books I've ever read!!! I remember I was twelve the first time I read this scene!
Liam Neeson was never Rochester. He was in Les Miserables, but he was never Rochester. And I'm afraid I don't agree with you on Charlotte Gainsbourg's performance. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. You're entitled to you own opinion, but so am I. I like this (1983) performance the best aside from the 1997 version although it wasn't entirely faithful to the book.
Sandra Reinbaha Firstly Liam Neeson never played a Mr.Rochester. End of story. Secondly the reason the only they even looked a like is because of the dress in the 1800's that they both had to wear in the individual films. Three the 1997 plays it off as lust.
The dialogue in this scene is almost exactly word for word in the original text. 🙌❤️ I love the Jane Eyre story (it reminds me of the Sound of Music), any adaptation of this book, I’ll watch. This, and A Christmas Carol have been well adapted over the years
Timothy Dalton , a brilliant actor and a very handsome man . I first saw Timothy playing Heathcliff in another film adaptation of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights". After seeing Olivier in the original movie and in the same role , one couldn't help but make comparisons . Timothy Daltons performance was equally as captivating as Olivier's . Timothy Dalton was every bit as good if not better than the great Sir Lawrence............... Shock shock, yes that's right , that's how darn good Timothy Dalton was and is .
Thank you for downloading this lovely video of Jane Eyre. Always love this version back from the 80s. Love this particular scene and how he teases her.
I do not understand why people keep telling me the 2006 version is the best. The script totally lacks the essence of the novel, Toby Stephen is a perfect Mr. Rochester for his appearance but he carries his role in such a modern manner, he clearly FLIRTS Jane instead of teasing her. The chemistry between them seem to be too obvious as they behave like a modern couple in 21st century. As a loyal fan of the novel, this version is really dissapointed
i love this version so much especially mr. Rochester he's the best looking ive ever seen in most movies at that age that was made they act so beautifully like u were a third person standing there :)
"I'm sorry to send my little friend on such weiry travels but if i can not do better how is it to be helped." I love how Timothy Dalton delivers that line.So epic!!!
Best adaptation! One of my favorite books. Loved seeing the gypsy scene...no other JE's I've seen bother with it and it's one of the best scenes in the book. :)

The modern versions are too pantomime compared this well constructed and well established cast, minus dizzy cameraman. The old classics can never be beaten.

Best proposal scene of all versions! Not rushed! No hurry, like in the movie versions! True to the book!

Gets my vote as best adaptation, and Dalton most definitely the best Rochester ever to grace the screen.
Love how they try to keep it similar to the book.
still the best version and the best Rochester!
My favourite romantic scene of all time 💕💕
Timothy Dalton looks overheated in this scene--as he should! He seems to understand Rochester inside out!
Dalton still has that honey voice
"Make my happiness, I will make yours." (Sigh)
+Jane Julia Amen! It's too bad that Charlotte didn't end the novel with their wedding and that night together then the end. Dramatist Alexander Baron wrote BY THE NOVEL and did not say, to my knowledge. Have to read it over again but the ending is to each word Charlotte wrote! ¬ Janet Thompson Deaver
It's the touch of the Welsh accent. Can hardly cope with how hot he is!
He's absolutely gorgeous and his expression and voice is just perfect 👌❤️
Mr. Rochester let me look at your face...
HIS FACE!!!!!!
Dalton is unbearably handsome. What a glorious man!
How this scene got me in simple steps
1) Tall, Dark, and Roguishly Handsome love interest (I'm aware Rochester is not supposed to be in the book, but I can't help it that it's Timothy Dalton)
2) Said love interest has a enchanting deep voice and suave personality
3) HEIGHT DIFFERENCES!!!
4) A gentle, yet very passionate kiss scene
Well done, 1983 Jane Eyre. You get extra credit for making it two kiss scenes *turns away with fan*
I feel the same way! Dalton is a brilliant actor. Do u know he was Heathcliff in the other Bronte sister's story (Emily), Wuthering Heights? Oh man...you have to check it out!
Yess! The height differences!!!
AMEN TO THIS AMEN🙌🏻
The height difference is in keeping with the story since not only is Jane described as being little virtually from birth in the book -- Mrs. Reed describes her as being "puny" as an infant -- the deprivations which she experienced at Lowood would quite probably have stunted her growth even more.
@@OreadNYC I just finished reading the book, so I see what you mean by this
I love so much this version with Timothy Dalton !
This video is on my old music playlist, from a decade or so ago. Charlotte Bronte's prose are just so beautiful that even the dialogue is enchanting.
The Best Jane Eyre, two actors were,Brilliant, like the book,❤
_BRUH_
Good *grief*...Timothy Dalton had the voice _and_ looks _and_ persona - the holy trinity of bae material
It's romantic
Sheryl Porter That it is; and a little overwhelming and just shy of frightening - as the first encounter with true, deep, adult love usually is. Basically, Dalton is a perfect Rochester.
Yeah it's true
3:34 XD
3:35 ok
He is total HUNK, so very handsome and a wonderful actor. He has a strong masculine presence that would make any woman's knees bend.
Too handsome for Edward?
Best Jane and Mr Rochester
The morning after scene was my favorite scene with her running into the living room with her arms outstretched for him. too cute. plus Timothy Dalton is a fox.
Best version of Jane Eyre ever done! Timothy dalton would have also made a wonderful Mr. Darcy! He had me at, “Make my happiness..I’ll make yours.”
Действительно,в наше не стабильное и не спокойное время,невозможно создать такую любовь и страсть,Зила и Тимоти непревзойденые,люблю их и обожаю всем сердцем и душой,здоровья им и процветания
Beautiful, Jane Eyre is just like me, shy, timid, vulnerable, innocent. I cry because this scene is so in relation to me.
The Living God
You forgot modest.
Same here! Btw, nice to see a fellow Christian.:)
@@punch6832 You don't need modesty if speaking the truth without offending anyone
Love TD. Made Jane Eyre really come alive for me❤️🌟
Ok. We' re in 2014. But this. This... Is my favorite love compassion ever existed, i all it's awkward way.
I agree! It's exactly as I imagined Rochester and Jane Eyre is one of the best books I've ever read!!! I remember I was twelve the first time I read this scene!
I love the movie Jane Eyre but the 1983 edition is my favourite
This is my new obsession... just love watching Timothy Dalton as Rochester...❤️❤️❤️
he was the best of the rochesters :(
He still is. lol
Eh. lol Not really. But Liam Neeson is WAY better than William Hurt in my opinion. lol
yes, he was the best!
Sandra Reinbaha Firstly Liam Neeson never played a Mr.Rochester. End of story. Secondly the reason the only they even looked a like is because of the dress in the 1800's that they both had to wear in the individual films. Three the 1997 plays it off as lust.
This is very close to the book
The dialogue in this scene is almost exactly word for word in the original text. 🙌❤️
I love the Jane Eyre story (it reminds me of the Sound of Music), any adaptation of this book, I’ll watch.
Timothy Dalton is the best Rochester ever
timothy dalton just sits there ans smiles when jane is showing how much he is loved.
Всё внутри него ликует! Он любит и он любим❤
This story is so beautiful.
Best wedding proposal ever! Both in the book and in the series.
This film is very good... I like Timothy Dalton, he is a great actor. As James Bond is perfect. The best version of this romance....
Yes! I agree!
Thank you for downloading this lovely video of Jane Eyre. Always love this version back from the 80s. Love this particular scene and how he teases her.
I adore this scene TD is such a wonderful actor! I swear I can feel the emotions he is emulating he is that good!!
TIMOTHY DALTON IS THE BEST ROCHESTER EVER.THIS IS EXACTLY AS I IMAGINED HIM. HIS ACTING BRINGS THE BOOK TO LIFE
I was just watching the 2011 version and not having seen the proposal scend in a few years I thought it felt so dang rushed. This is much better!
Игра актеров безупречна,Далтон-самий лучший Рочестер и безумно красивий мужчина
2011 version is my bias but this... 👏👏👏 Just wonderful!!!! Just like the book. I need to see the whole movie now
Awww I love Timothy Dalton ! He's so damn handsome !
This is probably the closest thing to being word for word.
@that's so classic. yes, I also love the 2006 version ! The height difference here though is so cute.
So, the man is the definitive Bond, now the definitive Rochester... could Dalton be the best actor ever? He's certainly a candidate.
In my view he's right up there with Daniel Day Lewis and Richard Armitage.
Oh my giddy aunt…. That kiss…..
i love this version ever.
Those Bronte sisters really know how to get it on 🥰
"I'm sorry to send my little friend on such weiry travels but if i can not do better how is it to be helped."
I love how Timothy Dalton delivers that line.So epic!!!
Best adaptation! One of my favorite books. Loved seeing the gypsy scene...no other JE's I've seen bother with it and it's one of the best scenes in the book. :)
I believe the 1973 version (with Sorcha Cusack and Michael Jayston) had the gypsy scene as well. I too loved their exchange of words. :)
This is the fourth version of Jane Eyre I’ve watched and each version has its own good and bad points.
Oh! Timothy Dalton. Tall, dark hair, blue eyes and just the perfect man. How could Jane say no❤️🇨🇴
Because she respects herself.

@@maricarmenmendez6658 Unfortunately not true. His eyes are changing colour like a clear water bluegreen. In Bond, Film not photo, and in 2-3 other films with close ups in close ups they are blue .
The modern versions are too pantomime compared this well constructed and well established cast, minus dizzy cameraman. The old classics can never be beaten.
