I place all mine in a mason jar. I add a silica packet to keep it from getting mold. Plus they last way longer. Thank you for the videos. I find them very helpful. I too live in Florida.

How many bean plants did you have here?

I've grown Puerto Rican black beans. I won them in a giveaway from Petrina on Homegrown Florida. That was the first time growing beans. I couldn't believe how easy they were to grow. I cut them down in September & left the roots in until I was ready to use that grow bag again. Well 2 of them decided to sprout & grow again so I just let them. I now have more beans growing in my garden.
I'm a sit in front of the tv & shell them kinda gal.

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure that you “shuck” corn and “shell” peas and beans. Great video once again. Thanks! 😊

That sounds right! It’s the Midwest roots. My parents are from corn country. My parents and I have shucked corn but never dealt with beans growing up. Thanks Karen!

I like to grow rattle snake beans. They make great cooked green bean and dried, they make a good pinto bean. We eat a lot of pintos instead of black beans.

I did Puerto Rican black beans, before the hurricane last year, but put them in too small an area, and they took over- I harvested them early so we didn’t lose them in the storm. Will try again, since they loved growing in my yard. I also grew purple hull cowpeas- did okay but had pest pressure.

I store my dry beans in the freezer. I put them in a Tupperware container until I have a pound. I put them in a shrink bag, label and back into the freezer.
Those not so dry beans that you picked can be placed on a table and they will continue to air dry over time.
I grew red noodle beans this year and I don't care for them. They are tasteless, so I'm freezing them. I will add them to vegetable soup for a filler. Does anyone have any ideas on how they use red noodle beans?
If you have too many beans, maybe a food kitchen would like to have them
    .
Great harvest. Great video as usual. Thanks 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

So my question has nothing to do with beans but you mentioned throwing your sweet potato vines in a bed. My sweet potato vines keep getting covered in whiteflies. How do you prevent them in your bed. I’ve read that I should not compost them if they have whiteflies.

Waiting to see the brown anoles run like "AHHHH!". They do this when I get out side to muck around in our garden. Sometimes when I water the compost pile, they jump in too. Growing black beans and lentils for legumes now, started them a few weeks ago!

Cherokee black beans did wonderful for me. Puerto Rican got the beans eaten out of he shells by something! Every single one of them! And then my trellis gave way before the end of the season. 😂 So it was a failure all around. I shall try again! On something sturdier.😂😂

I stored my asparagus beans this year in cheap dollar store jars, Then I saw some worm/maggot/grub looking things crawling in them and I dumped them out in my mulched areas for potential nitrogen fixing chop and drop cover crops. I also had success with black eye peas but never saved them. I hand shucked my beans when I took shade breaks. Being too stubborn to get air conditioning I need shade breaks and I pile up sitting tasks in my shade chair area. Since it is cold in North central Florida this time of year that pile of sitting/shade tasks have piled up.

Save the desiccant packs from new shoes and stuff. Put one or two in the jar with the dried seeds. No mold if no moisture.

Are Puerto Rican black beans the same as the black beans one sees in the grocery store? Are they in the cowpea family? Have you ever grown Red Ripper cowpeas if so do they vine on a trellis and how do they compare?

    • @WildFloridian

They are different. Same flavor but they are smaller and aren’t shiny. Not sure because info is limited on them. I haven’t done any cowpeas before so o cannot say 🤷‍♀️

Aww, you could have given them to me if you didn’t want them, beans are Puertoricans daily sides. I have a question though. You said they will reseed if they drop. Does that mean I can continue growing them around winter? Because if I can, I would love too. 😂❤ I live in zone 9b.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  10 месяцев назад +1

LOL! Yes they will definitely reseed! Everywhere. I think it is worth a try. They may not take off during the winter and stay small which is what I remember from last year. Some of the beans may just hang out through the cooler months too. So I would try!

"Shelling" the beans 🙃 Have never tried dried beans before, but love black beans, so may try these in the spring.
