I think you should plant some big tall fruit trees to give yourself some privacy and that way you have your inner garden with vegetables
I love huge transformations like this!! So fun to watch. Ya’ll are such a great team. It hurts to see people put “yard waste” at the curb though. Hopefully you compost all that or throw it down under some banana trees. 😅
Yay! I'm glad you liked! Normally we don't throw anything in the trash bin... but the compost got filled, then we put under the mulberry/bananas.... there was just TOO much all at once.... we still had 50 gallons worth of plant material leftover. So we trashed some of it.
Very interesting. A FLORIDA COTTAGE GARDEN!!! Did not think it was possible? LOL. Good job! Will watch to see how it goes. I have found that a Woodland Garden is easier. I use wood limbs as borders and then, the bugs and bees use them.
Wow, it looks incredible. I've been planning similar hardscaping and going back and forth between hiring or DYI. I love working with my husband on outdoor projects, but I also see how much back breaking work needs to go into it. I'm so proud of your family for pulling it off. Great vision!
We are in North Florida zone 9. Weeds are growing on top of our mound of mulch... It's crazy how weeds take over EVERYTHING! Always using the edger chopping it all! A constant pulling is a must too. If only the things I wanted to grow would be as hardy! LOL....

Looks good between your channel and Urban Harvest I have learned a ton about Florida growing. I am building a food forest on 2.5 acres in the east Naples area and this helps a lot.

Great job! Quick tip: you can buy gravel at local nurseries by the yard or 1/2 yard. They’ll usually deliver and it ends up being cheaper. Less than $25 a yard here in Gainesville for concrete fines. You easily used that.

What a labor of love! I wasn’t sure how this would all turn out and just wow. You and your husband worked so hard. I live in Florida and know the elements are tough. It’s hard to dedicate a day to pulling weeds and here you are building walls! I can’t wait to see phase two!!!

Did you check with your city or county you can do this in ROW, they usually don’t like any sort of structure in the right away, anyway, them and the utility companies can take it out for any reason…. just a FYI, for your other viewers check with your municipalities.
Great discussion about giving interest and breaking up all our Florida green. Last year, I heard about trying to putting in 4 colors in the garden. Green, blue, yellow and red. More or less talking foliage. So, a few months ago, I added vitex and alternanthera for the red, Dusty Miller for the 'blue-white". I can't figure a great yellow, except Hosta, which I don't want. Anyhow, always working on our outdoor canvas.
Ornamental sweet potato vine comes in a nice acid yellow-green color.

Love your videos. You are so blessed to have real soil. I can't believe how nice it looks where you are digging, Here, in Citrus County, Florida, we have white sand. Trying to "make" decent garden soil takes years. You are also blessed to have a husband who shares in the work load.

My one recurring question when I see you garden is “how are your nails and hands still so beautiful”??? My nails would be non existent.
🤷♀️ I’m not sure. Daily Super healing smoothie that is packed with all the nutrients is my best guess because I bang my hands around a lot. 😂 Those concrete bricks were 20 pounds each and cut up my hands when I wasn’t wearing gloves.

In my Orlando garden I have used what I call the "four Cs" for weed controll: compost, cover crops, and concrete. I used the solid and heavy 16" x 16" x 4" concrete blocks throughout for both walkways, the raised bed curbs, and terraces. The vertical curbs and terraces contain the compost and keep it from covering the walkways. I had to do a lot of weeding for about the first year, but now that my plants have grown in, I only have to do occasional light maintenence weeding.

Wow. Just Wow. It looks amazing. You two should be so proud of your hard work and great design. It was great sitting in my air conditioned living room with a tall glass of ice tea watching the two of you sweating your buns off. LOL I know. I'm an a$$. I had to say it because someone said exactly the same thing to me when I worked for a week relandscaping my front yard when I lived in St. Pete. Love ya hun. Can't wait for the continuation.

Amazing transformation! So much work in the FL heat! It will be a beautiful cottage garden. Where I live, I might be able to do a partial terraced wall, but we can’t have any fences in front of our houses 😢. Can’t wait til next week to see your progress!
Thank you Robin! Luckily we did the project in late March through mid-April before the heat really got here. Just took me forever to edit all the footage.

That looks really nice! I can't wait to see what you choose to put into them. You have a lot of experience with natives now and it will be interesting to see which plants rise to the top. You had put so much time and effort into organizing spaces previously, but in the end it looks like it blended into one big green mound, lol. I have just started to experiment with many of these plants and I worry some will get out of hand. I'm sitting here with some spiderwort that I'm afraid to plant after watching videos that it comes up everywhere!
Thank you! And yes, it became a mess. The plants never filled in properly because of the Poinciana which allowed native poinsetta, tassle flower and b. alba to take over. I saw a really good idea for spiderwort. Put it in a large pot amidst your flowers. It will keep it from running around. Mine was always contained by cement, so I never had a issue before I pulled it.
Inside the “U” could be stuff like False Indigo, Darrow’s blue berry, St. Andrew’s Cross, Silver Pametto. A little woodland garden with the smallest woodland plants.

the Terrace look was the Perfect idea.
I've seen some people built a cottage garden with terraces using raised beds,
I.e.
Using a 12ft x 4ft x 1ft, metal raised bed, then put a 8ft x 1ft x 1ft inside it, making a terrace Look

I live in Orlando and bought a house with several gravel “projects”. Believe me, the gravel sinks into the ground over time. You want to use porous “weed fabric” along your ditches. Then sand/pebbles.

Panama City, Fl. 5/3/24. I could really use your help. I have banana plants that I have been growing for at least 5 years and I never get bananas from them. what am I supposed to do to get them to grow fruit? I use cow manure for fertilizer. Please tell me what to do that I'm not doing. I can't get any answers from anyone. I love yor programs. I watch you all the time and have learned alot from you. Thank you so very much... Beverlee

Adding interesting bushes (like rusty lyonia) helps as well as silver palmetto. It helps to provide a backbone.

I love this so much! I envision a cottage garden in my backyard but this brings it to a whole new level!!! Now that we're looking at 90 degree temperatures ( zone 9b) all the hardscaping will be delayed until October. It will keep me busy enough keeping everything watered. I could really use some shade!!!

Your terraces look amazing, good job! In the future try setting temporary stakes with a string line and string level. It speeds up the trench/ gravel/stone block placement. However you did an amazing job. I’m not sure but it looks like Sunshine Mimosa in the center area. We love ours. We keep it mowed(tall) except when in bloom, so it appears to be a conventional lawn, with one month of flowers!

It looks amazing! I’ve been kind of dealing with a similar situation in my backyard. I have a lot of natives also and after awhile they really start looking weedy. I was struggling with a way to border things off better too and I also came up with bricks. A fairly cheap and easy way to do it. I don’t need high walls like yours but the idea is the same with keeping the crazy in the box, lol. Great job, I can’t wait to see what you do with it next!

It’s quite lovely, but what happens when the city needs to do something to pipes running under the right of way near the road? Can you easily dismantle the brick? Thanks for your channel. We have loved learning about FL natives.
Gardens do evolve as time goes on and you have a huge undertaking ahead of you. Rather than building new structures why not use layering with the plants to create a new look. You know shorter by street, next row/area/level a bit taller etc etc. I know you are going for cottage look and it’s possible to get there and maybe easier. Take my 2 cents for what it’s worth and hurry 90degree days are here 😊

Are orange coneflowers still medicinal like the purple ones? Echinacea?
They are part of the Rudebekia family... think Black eye susan's.
