As well as Chacha and masa as father but not father's sisters as mother. we have automatic relationship bondings, that's why even though the couple are not related with each other, they calls mother in law as ATHAI (use to call mami & bua) and Father in law as MAMA, even their fathers call each other as Jija saala and mothers call each other as bhabhi in both side. This system actually preserve gothra system. There is not chance for Cross cousins born in same gothra as both their mothers and fathers are not born in same gothra. Even in Mahabarath Arjun married his cross cousin Subhadra and called his parallel cousin duchala as Sister. And according to the shashirekha parinayam abhmanuyu married his cross cousin Shashirekha firstly and considered his parallel cousin lakshmana as Sister.

As a keralite i can try to answer. Cousin marriages were very prevalent in Kerala, infact it was the only type of marriages in the state. The prevalence of cousin marriages were mostly due to a system called 'Marumakkathayam'. In this custom a man's property goes to his sister's children. So you inherit the property of your mother's family. Inheritance passes through the women, also called matrilineal succession. Usually the man's children won't have any right to their father's property. So inorder to prevent an outsider to marry the sister's children thereby receiving the privilege of utilising the property, the system of cousin marriages was introduced. As time passed newer generations got more educated and travelled throughout the world, the perception changed. So cousin marriages were seen as something 'bad' or 'unacceptable'. Also the need for cousin marriages was eliminated due to reforms in law, whereby the custom of 'Marumakkathayam'was abolished. Decrease in the size of the families also contributed to the end of cousin marriages. In nuclear families there is no guarantee that a boy will definitely have a sister,or a girl will definitely have a brother,so that their children can be married to each other.Cousin marriages were very prevalent until the end of first half of 1900s. Even in the latter half it was not completely eliminated, but the incidence decreased a lot. Cousin marriages were mostly prevalent in Nair community. Though Ezhava community also practised the custom(I am not sure whether it was prevalent in the community)As I am aware, Namboodri community never did cousin marriages. Edit:- Kerala 's old marriage system does not confine to cousin marriages alone,it is more complex. There was another custom called 'Sambandham' in which polygamy was allowed for both men and women. Also in 'Sambandham' the woman stays in her own house and husband/'sambandham'partners visit her. The woman's property never goes to any of her partners. Nair women had the power to end a 'Sambandham' relationship when they wished to. For men, both Namboodri and Nair men could have 'sambandham' . But women of Nair community alone were allowed to have 'Sambandham'. It is highly probable that in Nair community, even if a girl of marriageable age does 'pudamuri' (or the then marriage) to her cousin, she often have other partners and she may or may not choose to end the relationship with her cousin at a later stage. In a Nivin Pauly-Mohanlal starrer movie,it is mentioned that Ezhava community also practised polygamy, but I am not sure whether it was like sambandham The system of marriage is recent in Kerala.
Very prevalent in certain communities like Nair. As far as I know this murappennu muracheckkan concept is not present in my community. But it was popularised by the movies and literature.
First of all there is no cousin relationship in Hinduism. Its Western word for generalising like aunt uncle,. Father brothers children called as brothers and sisters not cousin. Similarly mother's sisters children consider as brothers and sisters too. Father sister called as mother in law. Why because if we call Father sister as mother, she will equal to wife of your father. So to distinguish mother in law is right word than aunt. . similarly mothers brother Children. Brother in law and sister in law. Example Krishna, Arjuna relationship with subhadra

Very knowledgeable topic.
I'm from Tamilnadu, Cross cousin marriage is not that much of strange as you talk. As per you said we consider maasi and chachi as mother but not mother's brother (Mama) as Father.
It is strange for them as they have always seen it as wrong.
This can cause many health related problems... Marrying your someone in your own family! Huh how can you sexually attracted to your own uncle??? That's crazy
@@Arjun39092 marrying uncle was always rare in Tamilnadu. Marrying cross cousin is mostly praticed. And mostly there is no genetic disease or health issues about cross cousin marriage. There is some thing called cancellation of diseased gen by healthy gen. Marrage from out of family is happening well just Cross cousins are first preference not only one. When Cross cousins are not same family or gothra how they become brothers or sisters like parallel cousins. We have clear Idea about it, But you people don't even have a clear family structure. We don't have any word specially for parallel cousins, we just call them brother or sister. Not even like chahera bhai behen in North India. Name for chaha-chachi or mausa-mausi is related to mother and father, for both we call periappa-periamma (big dad-big mom) and Chithappa-chithi ( little dad- little mom). But parallel cousins are not even considered as a family member. If my father show a person in our native and tell me, that man is our relative, our great great grand parents are same, i have to consider that man as periappa or chithappa based on the seniority to my father. No matter i know him or not, his children are my brother and sister. Same case to cross cousins. No matter we know them or not they get added to our legal list by parents. Mostly North Indians thought we just marry our own cross cousin. Actually most of cases cross cousin marriage have generations of leaps mostly they are third or fourth cousins. Not first cousins in all cases.

You are saying that because you don't know the history of Kerala. Christianity in Kerala is older than Hinduism here. I know you will find it difficult to believe, but I really don't care. You may laugh at what I said, but the fact remains a fact.
Christianity reached Kerala when the natives followed the Dravidian folk religion, and the Kings patronised Buddhism. Brahmins from the north started arriving in Kerala, 300 years after the Christians reached, and significant wave took place only after the 7th century AD. It was only in the 9th century AD, when under the leadership of AdiShankara, the Dravidian natives were categorised into Hindu caste system and automatically converted as Hindus. And if you have watched the whole video carefully, you will agree that if some fool comes talking about "ghar wapsi", the very first obstacle he would face would be the language, because the common people would ask "wtf is that ?" 😂

In a Nivin Pauly-Mohanlal starrer movie,it is mentioned that Ezhava community also practised polygamy, but I am not sure whether it was like sambandham
The system of marriage is recent in Kerala.
Very prevalent in certain communities like Nair. As far as I know this murappennu muracheckkan concept is not present in my community. But it was popularised by the movies and literature.
Someone reads books🤗

First of all there is no cousin relationship in Hinduism.
Its Western word for generalising like aunt uncle,.
Father brothers children called as brothers and sisters not cousin. Similarly mother's sisters children consider as brothers and sisters too.
Father sister called as mother in law. Why because if we call Father sister as mother, she will equal to wife of your father. So to distinguish mother in law is right word than aunt.
. similarly mothers brother Children.
Brother in law and sister in law.
Example Krishna, Arjuna relationship with subhadra
