I recently learned that the "dress yourself" explanation for the right over left vs. left over right is likely a myth--among other things in a household where adult women were being dressed by a servant, adult men were also likely being dressed by a servant as well--though it might explain why children's clothing is the way it is. Apparently it originates in the 20th century when mens and womens shirt styles became similar and fly front women's trousers became popular, as a shortcut to tell what kind of body a garment was cut for. Also I'm really obsessed with this kind of off-the-shoulder chemise under stays, I would wear an outfit like this every day if I could, but sadly I'm living in a country where shoulders are a bit indecent for everyday, RIP.
oh no! haha well that's ok, I'm sure it's not the only incorrect thing I've learned in school 😅 yess I love that look, I'm sorry you can't wear it as you'd like!
Baby Bat stubbornly refusing to star in this video when you're working so hard to prepare for her professional holiday is adorable! Silk chiffon is pure evil, you have nerves of steel. Those sleeves gave me a flashback of student me salivating over Lolita fashion, very princessy. The reveals were gorgeous. And that backpack!❤
she's having a hard time accepting her newfound fame 😂 this chiffon was definitely better to cut than most! it was the more expensive one from mood but I think being more expensive made it more substantial and easier to cut. trade-offs i guess 😭 I'm working on next month's videos concurrently to these and the chiffon for that chemise was an absolute NIGHTMARE omg shifted everywhere
It came out so beautifully! I love that you can also wear the items separately for more every day looks, it's always a shame to make something beautiful then only get to wear it for 'special' events.
thank you! I knoow I wish I could use pieces from other costumes more frequently . I'm trying to do more every-day wearable clothes in between big projects!
I loved to see how you wore the two pieces in everyday outfits. The sheerness of the chemise is a nice touch which I really like. I love that you use good quality fabrics in your projects.
Your video aesthetic is so beautiful and the sound of all the rustling fabric is really relaxing. I feel like I could curl up in front of the fire with my sewing and watch your videos forever :)
There's me a complete noob, can barely thread up my machine and sew in a straight line... 🤣 Sewing is part sorcery, I swear! The completed outfit is absolutely stunning. I think I would live in it haha
I apriciate the continous placket explanation! Where I had read the technic they did not include everything you did, and I was not happy with the results. Exited to try this 😃
Just gorgeous! Can't believe I only just discovered your channel recently, I have lots of binging to do to catch up! Also Baby Bat sounds very similar to one of my cats, everytime she meows off-frame I think its my cat demanding dinner!
Oh my gosh your outfit to the museum is so cute!! The chemise is such a lovely design, I would like to make one. Adding it to my list. The skirt is so pretty too! I'm glad you ended up going with this design, I feel like it has a lot of character and can be used for a lot of outfits.
I love this! I love the sleeves on the chemise - very princess-y. The silk chiffon seems like such a pain, but the end result is very nice haha. I recently ordered Patterns of Fashion 1 as well! Trying to wait patently for it to arrive! I am so glad they are working reprinting them!
thank you! this chiffon wasn't too bad actually! I'm working on my renfaire costume at the same time as this costume and the chiffon for that chemise is so delicate it was suuuch a pain to cut. I think the mood chiffon was a lot more substantial which was easier to cut!
@@moth.faerie oof! I can imagine! I’m glad the mood one was easier to work with! The Halloween jacket I’m working I did lace sleeves for it - and while I love the end result I was cursing them entire time haha. Such a pain!
I really love how they both came out! How insane would it be for me to try making these with essentially no sewing experience (aside from home ec. In middle school)? Also love those shoes if you know where they're from??
Ok. I’m obsessed with your skirt and I have seen you wear it in other videos since then, and I really want to make one for myself. But I do have a question…I have watched the video multiple times and I’m trying to figure out if it is a regular circle skirt or a double circle skirt. I know you mentioned in the video gathering down the waist, so I was thinking it was a circle skirt with a larger waist size gathered down, but I wasn’t totally sure. I also know you patterned yours off another skirt, and the clip showing the initial skirt had so much fabric when you twirled that I thought it looked like the double circle there…Any insight that is a little more specific? It’s a lot of fabric and I don’t want to experiment and mess up with that much fabric.
Both look great! I was wondering, in the art museum video you're wearing a shorter skirt, did you not make the chemise kneelength-ish like it was on the pattern??
Hello! Can I have more explanation for the circle skirt? How did you decide on your waist measurement for the gathered part? 2-3x your waist measurement?
For gathers I usually do 1.5-2x! I don't believe I gathered the waist for this skirt at all though actually, I think I just used my waistband measurement
My 16 yr old daughter and I love your outfits. She is getting into design and I am her sewer. Have you used Horsehair Braid for tiny hems? I just had my first experience with it while I was working on her homecoming dress and I love it. Also, do you have any advice for someone that is thinking about going into the design world?
Aw thank you so much! I have used horsehair braid for hems! I use them a lot on magical girl or idol anime cosplays 😊 I'm not super familiar with fashion design, I'm more in the performing/costuming world but I would say try to find an internship while she's still in high school - it'll give her a lot of great experience and most of them don't pay unfortunately so it's better to get the lower tier stuff out of the way while she can still be supported by family! For things to do at home, definitely read up on clothing history, for costuming, knowing how the silhouettes change over time is super important, for fashion, understanding the influence and differences between specific designers is crucial. Drawing skills are also very necessary for any kind of design career. Hope that helped! If you or your daughter have specific questions please feel free to ask!
I find that when I make a change to my pattern to do something that's probably harder and will likely make my life more difficult I actually get less annoyed during the process. If I'm just feeling (: about a rectangle skirt and it starts giving me issues then I get cross more quickly because how dare it, it isn't even that cute.
yes omg this is exactly how I feel, like if I mess up a difficult thing that's ok because it's difficult but if something easy gets messed up its like 'why can't anything ever actually be easy' 😭

I miss those baby bat bright meows! Sometimes when I don't know what i want to watch on RUclips i just come back and watch your older videos

That chemise is soooo beautiful. I'm sewing my own witchy costume so it's nice to watch as a sew.
thank you! are you posting it anywhere? I'd love to see it!
The white over black is really wonderful! I like seeing the separate pieces out in the world, too.
thank you! I'm glad you liked it, I was hoping that would go over ok! 😊
These pieces are so cool. They have such great swooshyness when you move! Excelent work! Also Baby Bat was particularly cute in this video lol.
thank you! haha she was particularly whiny!! but she makes it very cute 😋

This was just magical. Love how this turned out
thank you so much! i'm glad you liked it!
Thanks for showing how to do the continuous bound placket. I've never heard of that and will love trying it on my next skirt. Thanks!
I'm glad it was helpful, thank you for watching!
I wish I could saw like that. This is amazing. The chemise is stunning and I love the vibe of the skirt and the length is cute as hell
Your video aesthetic is so beautiful and the sound of all the rustling fabric is really relaxing. I feel like I could curl up in front of the fire with my sewing and watch your videos forever :)
aah thank you!! haha that is the exact vibe I'm going for, I'm glad you liked it! 💕

You're full of great tips, I didn't know that about the chiffon scissors or reducing the half inch in the placket.
I'm glad I can be helpful!! 😊
💕💕💕 I love how everything works all together, the beautiful chiffon under the corset is just gorgeous
thank you so much!

I got my Patterns of Fashion 1 and 5 in recently too! Excited to see what projects you use your copy for :)
yess I'm hoping to do a bridgerton inspired project next spring but honestly i just love looking at all the sketches, they're such beautiful books!
Very pretty reveal shots of those sleeves!
thank you!

thank you so much! your cat sounds very cute then haha I love the squeaky meows 💕
Watching your cats is a highlight of my day (and you as well xd)
haha no i feel you! the cats are absolutely the highlight of my every day!
oooh the silk chiffon chemise turned out so lovely! So tempted to make one myself now. The whole ensemble is gorgeous!
thank you! definitely recommend, it's so much fun to wear 😊
It looks great! Congratulations 😍

ah thank you! and I'm so obsessed with the chemise I want to make a hundred more 😊
@@moth.faerie makes sense, it’s friggin stunning! Imagine all the colors you could make!
It is so magnificent! Looks fabulous and comfortable! Yet another dream outfit for the list of future projects…

it's just a single circle with a gathered waist

i did make the chemise long, i just tucked it into my tights for the shorter skirt!
I made the other view chemise with cotton gauze

haha very true!

Was the ruffle at the bottom of your skirt cut on the bias?
not bias, it's just strips cut so the long side is perpendicular to the selvage
Minji make a BJD doll custom please
I may have missed it, what material is the skirt made of?
It's a wool suiting! it's very thin and a very stable weave though, I thought it might be cotton when I found it but it burns like wool
@@moth.faerie ooh excellent! Thank you+
