    Super interesting to hear your inside perspective. But I can't help but feel there's a lot of information missing. It's very vague what your role was at Retroid.
    From the video I get the impression that you were an external advisor. But that wouldn't match with saying you 'created' it, and in the comments you say otherwise.
    So what is it? Were you employed by the company? Did they temporarily hire you? What did you do, exactly? Didn't others contribute?
    Claiming to have created the device requires some explanation. Otherwise you can't expect people to believe it.

      @@TakiUdon I'm sorry, but unless you wrote the code, designed the shell, sourced the parts, created the electrical schematic and printed the PCBs, then you can't say you created the whole device, let alone any single component. A lot more goes into creating the device than picking an SoC and shell design from someone else's output. Moreover, it takes away from the people that actually did that work.

  • @orakaa
    @orakaa Год назад +19

    *Ok, you were either dishonest in the past or you are being dishonest now.*
    When you promoted Retroid Pocket in the past (for RP2, RP2+ and so on) and encouraged people to buy their products, you said you had given "some input" on the design of the RP3, while presenting yourself as NOT working for them. You only started to talk about it in details when you parted ways with Retroid on the RP3 launch. Before that it was (more or less) hidden.
    NOW you say you CREATED the RP3 design, which means you did work for Retroid and your implication was on a much bigger scale you implied, meaning you DID have an interest in people buying their products (for a potential collaboration on a Retroid Pocket 4, 5, etc) and you were not honestly reviewing their products until you parted ways with them.
    When I look at the comments here and compare it to Reddit or on some other RUclipsrs' videos, I fear you'll be deleting my comment. Hope I'm wrong, but we'll see.

    • @TakiUdon
      @TakiUdon  Год назад +1

      1. I did not talk about the RP3 while reviewing or making videos on the RP2/2+.
      2. I did not work for Retroid.
      3. People buying something that I designed/helped to build has/had zero bearing on being able to design/help to build other handhelds.

    • @orakaa
      @orakaa Год назад +21

      @@TakiUdon You reviewed the RP2 and the RP2+ and encouraged people to buy those devices.
      You ALSO said (on your video advising people not to buy the RP3) that the RP3 was built BEFORE the launch of the RP2+ but had been delayed for months due to major issues.
      Which means, based on what YOU said, that when you covered the RP2+ in your videos, you had already designed the RP3 and were actively collaborating with Retroid (something which wasn't fully disclosed until your RP3 video).
      There's a difference between "being sent an early copy" or "giving some advices on ergonomics" and "fully designing/creating a device" (while not disclosing your full involvement with said company when reviewing their products).
      So either you created the RP3 (which means you WERE working with Retroid, whether you were being paid or not), or you're tryinng to take credit for something that isn't yours.
      In all cases, some things don't add up in your explanations.

    Respectfully, I disagree with your end comments. It feels like nitpicking, in my opinion. The RP3+ is the best CHEAPER handheld gaming device. There's nothing that compares to it, and it outperforms its competitors. If you're looking for a cheaper handheld that can play basically play everything up to PS1 perfectly, along with select games from higher end consoles, the RP3+ is the way to go. Not to mention the fact that the RP3+ is customizable! It truly is a great system, its kinda disappointing to hear the designer talk about it in a negative light. Still, you did a great job designing it (besides the start and select buttons, haha). Thank you! You designed a great gaming device that I, along with others, absolutely love.

      @@TakiUdon tbh it sounds like youre just bitter about working with them because of their different business values. I couldn't care less if they decided to ship roms for the mainland market. If they listened to you, they may have a better product, but they also may not be as profitable or still around as a company. The reality is that there are corners that need to be cut to meet launch windows and problems with suppliers, and cost cutting that needs to happen to create a financially viable product. As a designer you're breaking the cardinal rule by designing for yourself and not the market. For example, not every gives a damn about retro feeling controllers. Look at the Nintendo Switch joycons. "It's supposed to be the people's brand." Really? Who decided that? You? Who are the 'people' its really designed for? I think they made the mistake of letting in a nobody with no business or engineering or design experience into their house. Sure you helped because their design vendor sucked, but if I were them I would thank you for your contribution and definitely not keep you around going forward. You holding out on adhoc software fixes just to spite them or 'get them to see the light' is just the final straw. Tired of hearing your entitled whining. "ItS eAsY tO jUsT fIx It AnD oTa." Really? Who's gonna sponsor that? Have you ever ran a technical development project? Have you ever budgeted for a development project? I'm gonna guess no. So sit down and be quiet.

    • @TakiUdon
      @TakiUdon  Год назад +2

      I didn't sell it to them. They wanted help to make a new brand and pitched this as the central product. There are other projects that I have been even more involved in than this, but there are also ones that my role ends at design, or some late stage in product development. If the ask on the manufacturer for something that I want to exist is too great (cost/time/difficulty), I'll offer up everything that I can do for free to make it happen. In many cases, the experience is invaluable. Those are usually the terms that I go for because some of the stuff that I pitch takes a significant investment.
      I also don't think this review is that harsh. The only real disappointment for me is seeing two issues that were claimed to have been fully addressed in response to my RP3 video (screen flickering/rambo app killing). Aside from that, it's just price. I can't be the only person who thinks this is too close to Odin pricing.
      As for Reddit, I don't care. I lived this and I know what I did. Half the people think I'm lying and the other half are arguing about semantics. Obviously other people worked on this too and I have talked about them before in videos, interviews, and on Discord, but you don't see any of them denying that this one was mine. If you exclude things that were outsourced (pcb layout, initial 3D modeling, heat solution, etc), the entire team that actively worked on this was on average 5 or so including me. Depending on the point of production, this number could go up (beta and RC testing had 2 people testing full-time) or down (painting & plastic injection mold testing was just me and one other person).

    Saying you want a $99 handheld more powerful than the rest, isn’t a design, but a mission statement.
    Watching this it seems like you kinda maybe art directed or creative directed the product, not designed it.
    Designing it means you sat down and made mock ups. Telling people you don’t like something, is just being a customer, but a lot of art directors that’s just what they do. Have no idea what they want, throw out some subjective terms that doesn’t mean anything (make it look good and very fashion), and then endlessly complain until they give up, and just accept something. If it works they take credit, if not than they blame it on the craftsmen.

      The issue with all the odroid products is the quality of build and inputs. I had an OGS, and it was by far the worst quality for dpad, buttons, and analogue sticks out of any of the other handhelds I owned at the time (V90, Pocketgo s30, rg351p). Screen wasn't particularly good either, poor viewing angles.

    • @Andyyy982
      @Andyyy982 Год назад

      @@retroman-- That's a different story entirely. For one the OGA was the first RK3326 handheld, as such it is responsible for a lot of the handhelds we see today as those companies all really established themselves in that era. Secondly, the OGA was a DIY kit. It was designed with simplicity in mind to help encourage assembly and a greater understanding of your devices. The OGA BE was one of the first handhelds to come with built-in wifi and it did so without any of the caveats of others like the Anbernic RG351p which was plagued with interference owing to their wifi chip placement. The OGS saw a bump in quality as it was no longer a DIY kit, despite what naysayers say. The screen was lovely, although some folks did get unit that appeared a little more washed out. But again that's still the state of handheld gaming from all of these companies from ayn to Retroid and everyone in between.
      The problem is some influential reviewers let loose opinions that weren't subjective, which lead to this gross misunderstanding of the quality of the Odroid products. Which in my experience of owning several Anbernic and Odroids, the Anbernic devices have been far more problematic. The RG351P I have was plagued with battery and button issues. The screen is dim. It's a dog, I've had to open it up multiple times. When I finally found the root of the trouble, it was because the battery contacts weren't soldered to the board they were just pushed together with some kapton tape over the contacts. Which is very poor assembly. I have since soldered the contacts and now the device charges and performs as it should. I've never really had cause to open my OGAs or OGS or even my OGU. I only did when I felt like spicing things up with colorful buttons, or in one case membranes.

    Taki, I appreciate your videos and what they've done for gaming handhelds, but, don't you feel like maybe using "I" so frequently only serves to discredit the work of the designers, engineers, and various others who work at the company? You almost make it sound as though they were leaderless and visionless prior to your involvement. If you were a consultant, they're going to use some of your ideas, and, they're going to discard others. That's how it goes. Take the experience and simply move on. You already had your say on the company last year. Having pride in your accomplishments is fine, but, this FIFTY minute video just comes off as passive-aggressive & petulant.

      I wasn't a consultant and I only used I for things I did.

      @@TakiUdon If you were more than a consultant, this video comes off as even worse. Anyone who considers doing business with you in the future now has to contemplate whether or not you're going to use your platform to burn them if you feel it's warranted. Hope this is the last we hear of your involvement with this company, and, I certainly hope you'd disclose any similar relationships in advance going forward.

    • @TakiUdon
      @TakiUdon  Год назад

      I didn't burn them. I have valid four critiques after using the device. Four. Three that are objective, and one that is subjective. That's too harsh in your eyes?

    • @oneway23
      @oneway23 Год назад +10

      @@TakiUdon That's a bit of a straw man. The critiques of the DEVICE, in and of themselves, taken in isolation, are fine. It's when viewed in the context of the rest of your video where I take issue. Again, your heavy implication, woven throughout the entirety of the runtime, that the folks at the company are essentially headless chickens without your involvement, is what I find harsh, not your review. Your review of a five-month old device is neither here nor there. In any case, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Let's move on and see where your channel goes next.

    I thought Retroid 3+ was a mocked version of a Switch Lite.

    I love nintendo switch design, but I just really hope the smaller company retro handheld could really use more original design. I think design with slight rear grip is more practical.

    A lot of claims made without actual evidence in this video. Sounds like you were little more than a product tester that felt slighted by Retroid for whatever reason and are now trying to take credit for "creating" the whole thing when you didn't actually design or engineer any parts of it. Is your next video going to be about how you "created" the AYN Odin or something because you tested it before it went into production? I'm starting to question if you actually work with any of these companies or if you just have access to some of the early prototypes and mockups of these handhelds through a friend or family member that actually works there. Without showing any receipts for your claims, your claims have no weight and a handful of 3d printed mockups don't really prove anything.

      He's literally just some guy who complains to them and sends them a bunch of emails.
      To say he "Created" the RP3 is a massive overstatement, at most, at most he was asked for feedback on the various designs.
      Since he's a youtuber with a large following who could either hurt of help their reputation, it makes sense that they'd kowtow to his suggestions, but it clearly has inflated his ego.
