I've been watching lessons about solos/licks/phrases and such since forever, and this is by far the best lesson ever. Simple and effective approach to a solo, not just a "look at me playing lesson".
Man Robben is such a wise and humble soul, I learn so much watching these videos. He has a way of communicating his knowledge in a way that walks besides you and never speaks down or above your level.
Roben I had the pleasure of seeing you at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma California. You did an instrumental- which you usually don't. You had as totally entranced. When you finished the room was absolutely quiet. And you leaned over and said into the microphone "Was I so good I left you speechless?" We all started screaming and clapping because you were that good. It wasn't that we had forgotten our manners. You were so good you left the audience speechless. Thank you. It's also very nice of you to share your knowledge and coach us. Thank you twice.
Robben is delightfully articulate, and obviously brilliant. It is a real joy to listen to him speak, as well as play. Thank you for this great series of videos!
This was an awesome lesson. I love how calming and laid back his voice is. This gave me a new way to think about soloing and "communicating" with my playing
He explains it beautifully and in very organic terms. He loves music so much, what a pleasure to see how animated he is about it, he really comes to life and feels it when he talks about it. Nice!
Hello, I must say, you are the combination of all arts. When you're talking' about music, or when you're playing', is like flying among many landscapes built of emotions and energy. Thank you Robben for what I saw and discover.
It's not about what he says but the way he says it. He have the gift to make the dificult stuff look plain and simple. Last year i attendent his lecture and he explained the basic music theory in 20 minutes in such inspiring and easy way. A great guy with a decent sense of humor. I don't know if he is a guru, but he speaks as one :D Just listen to his voice and calm tai chi movements :)))
great inputs from the man. it is so obvious he teaches from his training and long experiences unlike many wannabes in youtube who think soloing only means scales, licks, techniques and loudness.
Robben is a man who is not afraid to be himself, the mark of a true Man. It is the guys who have to be 'tough' and act all Macho at every turn that are truly 'Gay'. One of the best Guitar men of our times. Aint we lucky having a lesson from him!
Master indeed...in total command of the essence of the music he plays. And able to talk about it in the purest, tangible terms. This fiilm should be seen by every budding young blues guitarist. Respect.
I love listening to him talk. He expresses himself so clearly (pronunciation as much as vocabulary). Notice how that is exactly how he plays guitar too. What an amazing musician / teacher.
Can't add anything to it. I even sometimes feel to understand the big thing behind it all while I don't think I 'll ever getting close to his level. He' s a real teacher of realationships.
Just watched and fully understand what you meant. You seem to be a gentle soul a very understanding person, and show the true nature of guitar work around the blues,.As an old learner you are a great he lp to me many thanks. ROB ,A😊
couldn't agree more!! just so nice to hear some musical sense!! If you want to be a "Player" listen to Robben........and learn your chords....all of em!!! and also listen to music thats got lots of chords .......generally speaking "Pop" music won't get you anywhere,
I love the notion of being able to talk to other players about music (in addition to playing with them). Especially cross genre. Thanks for enhancing my musical vocabulary which is worth it's weight in hours of practice!
Robben is like a zen mentor. He is just talking about music itself, not about superficial guitar techniques or whatever. Very persuasive. Thank you so much.
This is gold. The word "seduce"...that resonated with me. That's key. A player really needs to seduce listeners...draw them in. Build it. Light and shade as Page might say.
George, I think you made a really great point I took the same thing away. I too got the feeling that Jimmy Page could be sitting right next to him and grinning ear-to-ear agreeing with Robben. Can you imagine a round table with the two of those guys OMG I would watch it over a thousand times especially if Page brought in all his old gear and played all kind of obscure Zeppelin Tunes and had Robben jamming with him sharing all kinds of influences and ideas. In an alternate universe this is going on right now lol. These are the kind of things that I dream about in my sleep but will probably never happen sadly lol. Peace, Bob M.
@@polara01 Thanks Bob! And you're right... a round table with Ford, Page would be absolutely incredible! I might like to add Mark Knopfler to that mix too! I love all those guys. Peace to you as well. G
I think him and Larry Carlton are 2 of the best teachers out there. They know how to teach in ways that isnt a specific lick, they show great concepts that can be used for your whole life as a player. The way they show how certain tones evoke emotion. I love that shit
Hes as fine a player as Scott henderson, Steve Morse.... Hes that different and that perfect and tasteful. Ive been watching him since the REH days when I was a child. I dont know what hes wearing though lol
Great video about phrasing. Call and Response heard right back to the Field Hollers. Polarization - that's about as natural a phenomenon as you can get. Everything natural is in 2's and 3's.Space and matter, Root and Fifth (2/3), Major and Minor, Loud and Soft, Fast and Slow. The third line is the one you draw between the extremes. This is the dominant factor.
Hey man, thanks for been so clear and specific, that's a nice way of teaching, very respectful and calm. Thanks for everything man. Thanks for free lesson
This guy is awesome, and I have heard much of his stuff; needless to say, I am blown away! I bought a book with backing tracks, including Robben's work. In the book, 'Ship, Captain, Crew' certainly caught my attention. The style Robben has and uses, along with the sound he implements into it is out of this world to me! I certainly want to see what I can learn from this guy.
Your solos are interesting with the ups and down to the climax at the end.Not too many players do that as good as you do,and not just your solo but the song as well.I like the way you play a lot of notes sometimes but keep it in good melodic taste.I wish you would come St Louis sometime.great leeson
Well, in fact, you should thank in reverse because it turns out it was Robben who gave the opportunity to a young 13-year-old guitarist named Joe Bonamassa and introduced him to a big audience in one of his concerts. There's a video on RUclips of that moment. Cheers!
I have a 2002 Tokai Love Rock LS the stock pickups sound good but I'm thinking of changing to minihumbuckers. The reason is , my main amp is a Blues Jr which I love, my Tele sounds Fantastic through the Blues Jr, but the Tokai "les paul" sounds dark and heavy. Would minihumbuckers brighten things up on my Tokai, I love the guitar it's a real beauty, any advice welcome. I play mainly blues, not into Rock.
Robbens point is great. Produce the ambiens, tell a story, build it up,,express something. It leaves "shredders" as a "bum in the streetpicture". Too many of them, all to be forgotten fast. Cause they didnt tell you anything.
I've been watching lessons about solos/licks/phrases and such since forever, and this is by far the best lesson ever. Simple and effective approach to a solo, not just a "look at me playing lesson".

Someone needs to give Robben an Honorary PhD. He's the Blues Buddha.

This guy is the truth.
So articulate and sound in his tuition. Looking forward so much to seeing RF at Ronnie Scott’s on 15th in London. Thanks Robben.
Saw this man play live one time. Phenomenally good player. Layers and layers of ideas in each number.
The whole world should be full of "Robben Ford's" it would be a far better place.
This was an awesome lesson. I love how calming and laid back his voice is. This gave me a new way to think about soloing and "communicating" with my playing
Yes!
Instablaster...
Exquisite guitarist, with an exquisite blouse..
Cam Collier Totally. He wears the best blouses ever. You have to if you want to play supernaturally
Just don't make fun of his Tits. (^_^)
That blouse kept tickling me, basically distracting from it all.
The Green on Gold is rock diva material lol
Exactly what came to mind too. Lol
Thanks for making people, including myself, remember the essentials of playing with others and for others...
It's not about what he says but the way he says it. He have the gift to make the dificult stuff look plain and simple. I could listen to Ford for hours. Southing voice, not intimidating. He is great teacher.
great inputs from the man. it is so obvious he teaches from his training and long experiences unlike many wannabes in youtube who think soloing only means scales, licks, techniques and loudness.

Not only a supreme player but a great teacher too,
whether one gets something from this or not its been my pleasure to listen to him.
I love Robbens playing. I often use his videos when teaching my classes. Great video course!
It is so rare that phenomenal players are also great teachers, bravo and thanks
I love this guy brilliant musician.
The man is brilliant. Genius.
Another lesson with great simplicity. Many thanks Rob ,A in the UK .😊😊😊
The things we mortals have to work to remember seem to come naturally to Robben Ford. The greatest.
dont think so, he is a natural player...but I also think he is the result of studying and dedication.
ROB ,A😊
Gold standard musician and guitarist. Bravo!
couldn't agree more!! just so nice to hear some musical sense!! If you want to be a "Player" listen to Robben........and learn your chords....all of em!!! and also listen to music thats got lots of chords .......generally speaking "Pop" music won't get you anywhere,
Mr Ford, really fantastic lesson- you have the ability to distill the essentials into very understandable building blocks...thanks so much.
I like this guy's style! He cuts to the chase. Also doesn't focus on scales and shredding!
Excellent stuff!
I love the notion of being able to talk to other players about music (in addition to playing with them). Especially cross genre. Thanks for enhancing my musical vocabulary which is worth it's weight in hours of practice!
Wow...love your insight..."a living experience." Beautiful!
I really identify with robben on that subject, totally agree.i am using the same approach.Robben ford is pure class !
Robbens always got some great stuff to say and show ....
The sound of this Guitar is like Robben:
Not from this Earth!
He is a so sympathic guy and knows everything about "Soulplaying" Music!
Faaaantastic!!!
Robben is like a zen mentor. He is just talking about music itself, not about superficial guitar techniques or whatever. Very persuasive. Thank you so much.
Such a good teacher, player and idol. A lot of people could learn a lot from him!
I absolutely love what you have to say. Less is more.
It's about emotion and communication, not speed and technique.
One of the best teachers ever.
This is gold. The word "seduce"...that resonated with me. That's key. A player really needs to seduce listeners...draw them in. Build it. Light and shade as Page might say.

What I got from this lesson is the dynamic character of picking with fingers rather than a pick. Thanks man!
He is a real Gentleman talking the truth with every word. Wonderfull!!
Thnx ROBB ...grounds me back to earth from the euphoria of shredding that sometimes goes beyond musical sensibilities.
He is such a great teacher, but also such a wonderful player.....no bullshit, no patronising, he just makes sense :-)
Big facts
I think him and Larry Carlton are 2 of the best teachers out there. They know how to teach in ways that isnt a specific lick, they show great concepts that can be used for your whole life as a player. The way they show how certain tones evoke emotion. I love that shit
He is such an inspiration! Now when I think about it - I have no musical talent but soul full of music -and I can actually play! Thanks Mr. Ford!
The way he holds the pick when he is talking is GREAT
Great lesson, you are The One! Thanks!
These are amazing lessons. Really down to earth
Fabulous musician - great to hear him share his thoughts .
Robben Ford you are a genius. Love your music.
Robben, Thanks for your musical spirit! Enjoying this teaching too. Looking forward to catching the rest of this vid.
From Joni to Miles. Totally awesome master guitarist.
Wise words from a great master and communicator
Thanks Rob for these usefull tips!
Great guitarist. Pure class.
Great, no-nonsense teaching. Great sounds as always
I have the same Gold top on my guitar. Nice video Robben!
Hes as fine a player as Scott henderson, Steve Morse.... Hes that different and that perfect and tasteful. Ive been watching him since the REH days when I was a child. I dont know what hes wearing though lol
Ahh…Robben Ford has such an awesome teaching quality.
I suppose you can use the analogy of a bird flying , it goes low and high dives and glides
this guy is awesome

the guitar is the ultimate tactile instrument, and viola violin and the cello too
Awesome....the tutorial is really inspiring, thank you so much Robben
thankyou for intellectualising the feelings and emotion and intuition into the music with some theory lesson
Your solos are interesting with the ups and down to the climax at the end.Not too many players do that as good as you do,and not just your solo but the song as well.I like the way you play a lot of notes sometimes but keep it in good melodic taste.I wish you would come St Louis sometime.great leeson
Thank you very much. This is just what I need.
Sometimes its the simplest things that matter so much. Very nice.
I enjoy his teaching style.
i love how you also try to bring some attitude and philosophy into the lessons... can i call you sensei? :)
Always been a great influence on me!!!
Grate. Robben your'e right. Emotions. Tks bro
I love this guy. He's like the Yoda of guitar.
Bravo pour ces explications sensibles et intelligentes
Love the gold top , sounds ' great...thanks for the theory ,cool...
Great lesson. Thanks for posting.
great lesson great artist
Thank you Joe Bonnamassa for turning me onto this cat. He is an amazing player! I'll be spending the next year learning his style.
Well, in fact, you should thank in reverse because it turns out it was Robben who gave the opportunity to a young 13-year-old guitarist named Joe Bonamassa and introduced him to a big audience in one of his concerts. There's a video on RUclips of that moment. Cheers!
He relaxed me about playing, I'm not as concerned about how "fast" I can play after listening to him.
That's the truth. Music is energy, not a competition...
This is so amazing! Thank you for sharing!
I have a 2002 Tokai Love Rock LS the stock pickups sound good but I'm thinking of changing to minihumbuckers. Technique of doom, yet still understands the importance of keeping things musical. Love this guy, needs a lot more recognition
Simply Amazing!
Thank you Robin.
what a great teaching.
Gran guitarrista, muchas gracias por tu trabajo

Excellent lesson, what a master!
Nice Robben, you're amazing!
Amazing musician.
Thanks for the lesson. Your a king!!
Your one of my favorite jazz blues fusion guitarists but you say you know a lot which isn't true that's why I'm watching you.
