Running a detachable dipsy diver is an extremely effective way of hooking King Salmon and other species of fish. We continually try new ways of adding and removing the detachable dipsy. We are currently on Version 4. We have tested and tried VERSION 4 and this is by far the best method we have used so far. So here it is! Test it out and let us know how you like it. I’ve been fishing Dipsy’s since the 80’s, you can catch fish fine with having a leader that is about the length of your rod attached to the snubber. I’m old school and don’t understand all the complexity and messing around trying to to unclip gear from your line. Successful Dipsy fishing is keeping it simple. JMO

Run a 50 foot Mono or fluorocarbon lead and clip diver anywhere you want along the leader. However if running wire I would suggest using a slide diver as that rod is a dedicated dipsy rod. If rod has braid it can be a high diver, low diver, downrigger rod if needed.
Great information Kevin. As a former muskie guide who builds his own magnum-sized spinnerbaits, I already had a good supply of Rosco premium #10 split rings, and I ordered a bunch of the adjustable compression clips to match-up with version 4. Got all of my dipseys converted last night. Something that I do, is that I have half my dipseys set in position #2, and half in #3. I use a black magic marker and write #2 (or #3 as appropriate) along with "L" (left) or "R: (right) on the bottom to allow quicker rigging set-up.
Thanks for posting. I do something similar with mine, only a mix of your methods. I tied 30 foot of 30 lb test green mono to my braid using a double uni knot. Before tying that knot, I tied in a loop knot in the braid, with a small bead in the loop, about a foot above the mono. I have a small S-Clip carabiner attached to the front arm of the Dipsey and that goes into the loop in the braid. On the back end I have a red off-shore clip that goes on the braid, but I slide it down to the double-uni knot and it can't slide any further. I put the bait in the water and let out line until I get to the loop and then attach the Dipsey and then I reset the line counter to zero and let it out. Works awesome! The upside to my version (IMO) is that the S-clips are super cheap. I used red clips that were too worn to use on my boards anymore, so those were essentially free. And it is easy on and off.

Darn nice! I do a NFN variant. I don't like knot in my line, so I tie a small loop in a separate piece of mono and insert that loop (1-inch or less) in the rod-side eye of my micro swivel that joins my braid to my mono leader. If you put the mono loop in the bait side swivel eye, the swivel can't swivel. This loop (that reels into my reel) is where I hook my s-clip. Sometimes I use an OR-16 on the bait side of the dipsey that's set such that the OR-16 helps the dipsey trip. I change out the mono loop from time to time. It's worked so far. I'm thinking of trying those mini-Scotty releases instead of the OR-16 but I haven't tried it yet. Thank you

What pound leader line r u running for your dipsy because i did this technique with the same clips had a fish on and both times my leader line is 25pound fluorocarbon broke when i tried 2 release the diver lost everything? Just wondering if u have any tips or am i doing something wrong thxs
Thanks Kevin for sharing. I just switched my in-line planer boards to those releases and I have some extras. Stealth Dipsy on port side Dipsy with 15ft lead on the starboard let the best Dipsy win.
I just did the same with my boards except I use the large yellow version. Good so far after 2 trips.

Great video and I ordered some of those clips from the link but man do they suck. They don't open up enough for the little pin to come out completely from the hole so once you flip it open, then you still have to pry it apart with your fingers to the get the line out. Also, the bottom screw on the tension adjustment isn't a locking nut so it is constantly getting looser and looser so I had to get lock nuts and replace them. I also unscrewed the small bolts that hold it together and put a small piece of plastic in between the jaws so they open up further when you flip it open. Awesome video though and can't wait to try this trick out! Thanks for putting out great content!

U can unsuckthem with a few modes.I used electrical insulation goop on the tension nut and the protruding bolt to prevent line abraition and it seems to help the tension.I also installed a lexan washer on top of the lever arm which deflects a little and u loose tension.Drilled for a aluminum or ss. Rivet to keep a faucet repair ss. Compression spring in place to aid in opening.The rivet is super glued and protrudes just enough to catch the spring.Also changed out to a church pad for a better grip.I carefully cut a little out of the lever stop for a more positive lock.The origiinal church clip while more costly holds the braid better and the lever arm is stiffer and holds the tension better along with the pads also the lever stop mode also helps.I also use a single OR18 clip but u have to double wrap it on thinner braid and only works good with braid while fishing for walleye on the single clip dipsey set up.

Hey Kevin, what are your thoughts on slide divers? What are the benefits of this system over a slide diver setup?
Slide divers are great. Unfortunately you have to let line out while holding the diver, and once triggered your fighting the fish with the slide diver near its face. Much nicer fighting fish without any weight on the line, especially when running spoons. It is just you and the fish. Another benefit is that you can pass the dipsy to friends to use or add to any rod. Slide diver is a dedicated rod, and to switch, you have to cut the line. If I want, I can bring fewer rods because they can be multi-purpose on the boat. Finally, traveling with a slide diver attached to your rod is a pain in the but! 😂
I put a small bead a foot or so in front of my spoon, plug so when the diver is released it slides down the line to the bead and stops. Haven't had problems doing it this way. @@FoxFishing4K
Which version works better for walleye?
Try out a few versions and pick which ever you like. The NFN s clip may work better as it is likely the fastest. I would suggest his version if on Erie and getting tons of bites.
I love the idea. I’d like to know if it looses some depth with all the resistance of the clips or if it’s significant.

I have a same suspicion-there’s going to be a lot of resistance in the water column , including constant currents deep down specially with two clips 😮It’s a great idea but smaller thinner plays a monster difference. Just recently came back from Key West fishing trip in 500-600 FOW Slow pitch jigging Yeah size matters as she said 😂

I don't use a snubbed at all.
Why not just use slide divers?
Cause slide divers are dedicated. I can use a rod on a downrigger and clip a dipsy on and now it's a dipsy rod. Also give me the flexibility of leaders. I can run 100 foot lead if I want with a clip on.

It makes a lot of sense to use 2 clips otherwise it's like playing tug of war and fighting the dipsy

If you got a 75' leader. The spoon/flasher fly will rise way above the dipsey which defeats the point of being able to target a specific water column.... maybe I'm wrong but temp and speed seem to be more important than stealth.
In the most polite way possible i beleive you are wrong. Even if you let out 100 feet of line your spoon will not be above the dipsy. You can test this beside your boat. Drop the tip of your rod down 2 feet and watch your spoon it will not come to the surface.
Also stealth is WAY more important than depth especially if you comparing gaining 100 feet from the boat at the cost of 6-12" of depth IF you even lost some depth which I don't believe you do. I would take that trade off every day.
Between the drag and weight of even the lightest flutter spoons, I’d be amazed if the bait had 2 feet of rise with even 100 feet of line out. Mayyyybe more with a flasher fly, but even then, the drag will prevent the line angle from going up much at all.
Think about it… People run flutter spoons on clean lines or 1-2 color leadcores all the time in the spring for Browns and Lakers. The line is attacked to a planer running right on the surface. Based on your logic, they’d be skimming the top.
And I can tell that fish ABSOLUTELY spook from Dipseys during daylight. If there’s no chop and we’re fishing clear water for spooky fish, I’m half tempted to just bring them in… Same lures on a rigger with 100 foot leads will still get bit though.
Stealth is immensely important during daylight hours. 3 AM? We’ll run a magnum bloody nose with glow tape on the back 30 feet behind the ball.
Why can't I clip directly to a loop in my main line ? Why tie in mono ? I'm reffering to the off shore clips
if you want a knot and a loop hanging off your line you could definetly do that. But then its a static position. you cant run a shorter or longer lead.
Hey Kevin, another great video tutorial, thank you. Have you tried Slide Divers, might be a good candidate for version 5 ? I like that release is tripped automatically on light-bite model when the fish pulls. And this is a true in-line diver with adjustable lead length. Check it out. Keep up the good work.

What is a typical lead length you would use on your dipsey when targeting Kings? no snubber anymore?
On Erie the walleye and steal head arn't bothered by dipsey's we run 6 foot florocarbon leader to spoon from dipsey.
I run 50ft leads minimum. It's not that the fish are bothered by the dipsy. I want the action the long lead creates with the dipsy. It's similar to ws and copper.

Also, maybe an updated video on your honest review of how it’s been working out. I’m using my set up on wire. Running my wire to a 5’ section of 65# braid and then a 50’ section of 30# fluorocarbon.

Thanks so much for the tips! Just tried this and had 20lb fluoro between the two clips snap on a big chinook. When inspecting the line it was heavily frayed. Anyone had this happen to them? Any tips on how to avoid this in the future?
Tried to replicate the line fraying issue and found that sometimes the line twists on itself between and after the clips, or if the line slips through the jaws it will fray.
How much slack are you leaving between the clips? Again just looking for tips to make this work, as it's brilliant. Thanks for sharing Kevin.

Hello, I've been running this method on my dipsy's and wanted to ask you these clips keep twisting with the braid and making it difficult to release them. I have been running a single clip now without the back one and seems to have been working has anyone else found a better method Thanks!
These are bigger than NFN's SW dipsy set-up, do you adjust your thinking for depth at all? Been running the SW dips for several seasons but would enjoy no loop in my line.
These clips are bigger yes you are correct. It may slightly decrease the depth as well. However not having the loop or a swivel being reeled into our guides is beneficial. It is also so beneficial to have the choice of a 50 foot, 75, or even a 200ft lead. This method also allows you to make ANY ROD a dipsy rod. You don't need a piece of mono or loop tied into every rod that you want to run a dipsy on. I can throw this dipsy to a buddy in his boat and he clips it right on and he is fishing in minutes. No need to cut lines or add mono pieces. There are so many benefits to this method that if we loose 1 foot of depth it is definitely worth it.
The fun part is coming up with these new ideas and methods and testing them out. They all work, and whichever one works best for you is the BEST method. :)

I switched to light bite side divers. Can have any distance you want between the diver and the lure. Highly reccommend.
Have you tryed running a deep crank on the long leads. Without it twisting up and making a mess?
I haven't I will this fall though. I love running cranks in the fall. If you do run cranks let line oit slow so it doesn't tangle up.
I only run shallow cranks behind dipsys, no need for deeps and no tangles.
Those clips look like they would also be great on planer boards!
They are! I use them on planer boards too. They fit the offshore and the church planers perfectly.

So like then but two problems they still slide and spin up. We need a full proof system that doesn’t slide and actually opens and one that don’t spin up on itself.

I think some guys go wire to braid and then braid to Mono or fluorocarbon

What size split ring do you prefer to use for this set up
These clips can take a much smaller split ring. I put on what ever size I had lying around and would fit. I do beleive smaller is better.

It's not you. I had a mic on and it was pointed down. Working on bringing better audio. In this instance it hurt me lol.

We still want to attract fish into the area. Salmon are curious by nature and will come check out the dipsy, then notice the bait come just a few seconds later. But you have a valid point. I really should test with some clear dipsys and see what works better. Maybe the dipsy with color detracts from the bait!

If you can not find the linked ones. They just look like a knockoff of the church lockjaw releases. They also make a church lockjaw mini release. For someone that wants to try a smaller release.

What do you do on your wire rods?
I don't run wire rods. Gbay we don't have many sea fleas. When on Lake Ontario I run 50-60lb to prevent them from grabbing the line.
Why not use a slide diver?
You can. However with a quick clip i can use this rod as a rigger rod. I can bring less rods on the boat this way. I want a smaller diver or different color it all changes in seconds.

I see your not a fan of the OR 16's with braid. What's your feeling with them with mono? I'm using 17 to 20 pound test for my main line. I just want to get down 40-50 max early in the salmon season where I do not need a big diver to get that deep. Thanks!
The Or 16 are not bad. I have actually gone back to using them. Those other clips I find too hard to remove quickly when fighting big kings!
