  • There were some good questions asked about our wild camping trip in the Discovery 3 last weekend and how it worked, a follow up video seemed a good idea. There’s a few things we’d do differently next time, but all-in-all we’re sold on making the D3 a future camper. 💚
    .
Although we’re talking about the D3, there’s something for every Landy on this video! 🏕

My dad used to have a Discovery 3 when I was a kid, and I thought it was a very nice car indeed. Ours was a 2005 (55-reg) HSE model with the 2.7-litre TDV6 diesel paired with the 6-speed automatic, and it was finished in a dark metallic blue (called Buckingham Blue) with the 'Alpaca' cream leather interior, which looked really nice.
It was September 2010, and I remember eagerly awaiting the moment when my dad would pull up onto our driveway in it, and when I saw PN55TZH pulling onto our driveway for the first time, I immediately went outside to have a look around it, and I remember being very impressed by what I saw.
Being the HSE model, it was fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, some of which we’d never had on any car we’d ever owned before, including tri-zone climate control, heated front & rear seats, rear audio controls, etc, which 10-year-old me thought was very impressive indeed. Plus, its air suspension made it a very comfortable and relaxing car to travel in - as Jeremy Clarkson said in his Discovery 3 review back in Series 5 of UK Top Gear to describe the ride quality, "it doesn't go over bumps, it just flattens them."
Even to this day, I consider it to be one of my favourite cars we've had out of all the cars my family has ever owned so far.

Hi great video, the gap between the seats is where the removable back parcel retractable shelf goes abs that’s fills the gap , I hope that helps . Regards mark disco 4 owner

I’ve put double air bed and big blanket underneath so it’s cover air bed on sides (stop squeaking air mattress when touching plastic trim) - getting slowly ready for North 500 in 5 weeks time 👍🏼🥰

Done the nc500 in my disco3, we used that space between the seats for our coats. And as for the bed I cut up a double memory foam mattress to fit perfect as an air bed wasn’t as practical for us as we had a baby with us. All in all was a good holiday!

A couple of things Jess, have a look at the Land Rover day tent that used to be available, it acts just like an annexe on the back door of the Discovery, I've had one for a few years and they do sometimes come up on Ebay. The gap between row two and three is where the parcel shelf fits. When you fold down all the seats it stores in that gap but if you're using an airbed you don't need to worry about it. Also nice to see the Kielder 4x4 Safari sticker in your car, hopefully we will be back up and running later on in the year.

Thanks Ian! Really appreciate the suggestion and it sounds just like what we’re looking for. Look forward to another safari! Fingers crossed it’ll be soon!

    Let's go hassle free.
    Don't fill up the gap.
Just put a 6 feet folding table on it.
    And sleep on the table.
When you are cooking outside, the table is very useful too.
When you are driving, with center seat folding down, the folding table could become a good partition for the storage room.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
When you are off roading, you need to tie down everything.
But If you have a partition, and fill everything properly, and blankets in-between for cushion, you can do off road without tying down with ratchets and straps.
On the two unfolded back seat, you can put backpacks tying down with seat belts.
You can maneuver the space efficiently and wisely.
On the roof, attach a roof rack, and you can store more luggage on that.
And tie down a solar panel on the luggage if you want a solar system.
You can go with both dual battery system and solar system together, and many overlanders are doing that.

Nice!!! I did a little structure in my D3 which allow me to sleep near the roof while i have a lot of storage room under the bed!

In case it helps, if you place the rear cargo cover in the gap between the mid seats and cargo area you pretty much fill the gap!

that thing you picked up was an old kettle and the roller that goes over the boot fits in that gap between the 3 seats to make a complete flat floor

Hi I seen another video and someone as a quick fix used there rubber floor matts to go over there gap. And slept well according to them. Obviously clean side up 👌😆😆

Thank you! Wish I'd know this at the start, our camp trip would have been a bit more comfortable, although in saying we slept on the gap, the D3 was still comfortable to sleep in length wise! And the seats lying completely flat is amazing, why it's not the same concept on newer models I don't understand.

If you have the roller cover for the boot that actually sits in the gap between the seats and fills it

Have you tried sleeping the opposite way. Heads at tailgate?
    Beautiful spots for a overnighter.

    • @OverlandJess
      @OverlandJess  3 года назад +1

We did try that and it was fine, but the tailgate is so much better to sleep facing towards, especially when the weather is nice!
