This video was a bonus - three projects in one! 1) A very well built platform with multiple purposes, 2) A cargo barrier for added safety, 3) modified table with it's own storage location. Very nice Christian and Vera, very nice. You know you couldn't work for Land Rover - they wouldn't be accustomed to vehicle built right the first time!
Hi Rob. I'm a professional independent L/R R/R mechanic with over 45 years experience and L/R's haven't given me a moments trouble if you what you're doing considering what I ask of them. There are some great mechanics out there, including at some main dealers. My last 300 TDI Disco for example did over 500,000 hard and I mean hard miles, yet the block and crankshaft were still at standard size's with two original pistons in there and the gearbox still had the original parts in it apart from 5th gear and 5th layshaft gear. The transfer box was all original as were the differentials, propshafts and Universal Joints when I decided to scrap it. All I ever do is service my L/R's R/R's every 10,000 miles, which takes me about 3 months. I've rebuilt BMW engines fitted in R/R's from as little as 50,000 miles on them, petrol and diesel. Not because of the owners fault, but because of bad design, just to give some fair representation. Rant over lol 🤣
My cheap discovery 3 is being delivered in the morning , 220,000 miles FSH. Mot till April 2022, it’s a late 2006 Buckingham blue SE with sand leather. It’s just had suspension module and handbrake module fitted , Its going to be a weekend toy and dog walking truck . I intend doing all repairs and maintenance myself and these videos are a great help. Thank you for all the hard work guys. 🇬🇧
I do enjoy how you work together and how she explains how you over engineer. My wife does that too as well saying how I over think everything. Fine work you two.
What I'm doing is building 6 inches above the floor on one side 32 inches wide with a fold up so u can use the back seat but when u let back seat down unfold so u have full 32 wide by 64 inch long and total of 10 inches off the floor with room beside u if u wanted just to sit
That was the most well engineered platform/bed solution I've seen. Really inspiring, and I hope you continue to share your designs and creation in such detail. Hope to get my LR soon. Thank you from America.
I love your German English - I used to speak when I was younger and I can hear exactly what you are saying in German as you are saying it in English - reminds me of my childhood :). Excellent platform build! I wish I could do this myself
Marvelous Christian and Vera! Very much enjoy zee German engineering and critique of said, makes for a marvelous comedy team and so useful at zee same times😺😺
Well Christian you've exceeded my expectations of you ones again you are what i call a genius and you just amazed me what you can do . How can i go 2 weeks with out seeing your amazing ideas . You and Vera and your son's have a great holiday and I do hope you catch the some on film . Ralph
Fantastic engineering Christian and Vera! Now you need to take a long overnight trip with Vera’s Discovery 3 and book yourselves into a good Hotel for the night. ……Preferably one with a very comfortable bed! ……And a mini-bar fridge!! You deserve that!
This is the best Land Rover channel on youTube. Just LOVE it. Here you actually learn something, a lot off things. I,m not afraid off buying a Land Rover anymore. Thanks to you two Incredible guys. Looking at the biggest salesite in Sweden, BLOCKET.
Great job. I've placed a foam double mattress in my rear and it does the trick for me. With the foam mattress, it can bend so the rear seats can be opened. It has a good bit of head room.
We have to get a better matress for this setup, but there was no time left. But in the long run, if this sleeping arrangement works out, we'll get him something more comfortable. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Amazing design Christian, and so nice executed and explained. And also, your new way of editing the film is very pleasant to watch. Good job Vera!👍🏻 Question: Are you going to incorporate a latch to open the boot from the inside, in case of an emergency when sleeping in there? I think it is a pity that you won’t post a film because of vacation. Just share your vacation with us, all 10.000 of us! We are addicted now, and won’t to go on vacation with you! Make a road movie where you use all those amazing mods and creative ideas you made real. Thanks you guys!
I just discovered your channel, and I love to see how your work around all the issues, that I find myself in in some of my overlanding projects. But beside the pedagogy of this content, I love the dynamic you two have and the love you have for this projects, and I find myself watching your videos, learning and laughing with your teasing and your jokes " My German engineering" is one of my favorites ! 🤣 thanks for sharing all this extraordinary content ! 👍
Certified German engineering. I wish I could do these things to my D4. It will be a pain to remove these contraptions when having the car serviced. another advantage if you service your own car i guess :)
What a neat design. Very much ‘German engineering’ even when Vera screws the channel on the wrong side of the line. :) I am very familiar with the old 10min job taking hours. I’m 2months into a bathroom renovation and am still many weeks away from completion. I love those machined pivot hinges. Very slick. I can think of so many uses for those. If only we could buy them to suit a range of RHS sizes. Thanks for another great video.
Again Christian more fantastic additions to the D3 I,m sure you could do this for a business except that you take so long and do such a perfect job that you could not make a profit from the work you do lol. It was also nice of you to buy for us all a D4 so that we did not ,so we can avoid buying one and keep our better D3 the only advantage I see in the later engine is the timing chain but everything else is not much better, also in the UK the D4 costs over £200 pounds per year more for road tax, which is another reason to buy a D3 up to 2005. Enjoy your break look forward to seeing your adventures again in a couple of weeks all the best Phil
I have to stop watching my American Overlanding channels now, because your attention to detail and the close tolerances are just amazing. Here in the US we like things that rattle and need minor adjustments to make something fit even when built specifically for our vehicles. Another great video...
Evening guys 😀 That was some fantastic engineering form a great engineer with the most sweetest assistant ever in Vera 😍 Well done in 10k subscribers 👍🏻 I'm depressed already knowing that there's no LRT next Sunday 😢 Take care and have a lovely vacation until next time cheers Stevie 😎🇬🇧
Amazing idea and great addition to your Disco 3 . I noticed that your back seats are like my wifes Range Rover Sport TDV8 , my 2005 Disco 3 seats are different.
This is a beautiful bit of engineering and fabrication work. Well done! It might be overdesigned for what it needs to do, but that's what allows it to be as optimized as it is. I'm confident this one was a ton of work; we only saw a small fraction of what went into it. If a V2 was ever to be built, my only suggestion would be to consider using a composite panel rather than the 12mm plywood. You could have a similar moment of inertia to resist bending but at a fraction of the weight. Also, a mattress/bed slat-based approach would be interesting too. I'm picturing ledges running the length of the platform on either side of the vehicle. Then you'd buy/build the style slats with the fabric webbing between them. You could store and then deploy them rather rapidly when the time came. But slats make a poor shelf for anything other than a mattress. Everything is a compromise.
Brilliant video guys, I was sooooo looking forward to the oil sensor change on the disco 4 but this was every bit as interesting. Enjoy your holidays and can't wait to see the next one.
1. Congrats on reaching 10k subscribers! 2. Just a fantastic setup for the sleeping platform. Love how the cargo barrier has a dual role. This is one of the things I need to do on the next stage of my D3, but I'll try to figure out a less German (i.e. more simple, albeit less elegant) solution for mine. 3. The rear folding seats has nothing to do with age. My D3 is a 5 seater from 2005 and the rear seats fold flat like on your D4. All 7 seaters had that completely flat folding setup, while most 5 seaters had your setup. Cheers, and have a great vacation!
This has to be one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips. I love the work you have done, and I also like very much your presentation style, humour and interactions. Excellent stuff. I do not have a Discovery, but I might see whether I can steal some of your 'German Engineering' to make something along those lines in my 1974 Lightweight. Thank you so much for the ideas, the excellent video and the shared secrets. Warm wishes from England. Orson.
Hugely entertaining videos, the prop shaft was outstanding I learnt something, keep this level and you will reach 20k in no time. I have a suggestion for a future video, have you though of listing the special tool and home made tool for DIY LR maintenance. Also books, Haynes used to do all this many years ago.
I built something similar but much less polished for my D2. Simple platform behind the rear seats. Fold the back seats down (but not folded forward) and they form the front of the platform with a narrow shelf to fill the gap. I put a vertical divider up the middle to provide support for the shelf. Slide out drawers underneath. My fit and finish is not nearly up to your high German standards. 5/8 plywood sanded and sealed. No metal. Simple.
Another brilliant video and more engineering. Excellent. Would you consider some protection for the rear of the seats where the legs stand on them? Over a prolonged period of camping I suspect wear might show.
You two are brilliant ;-) I also like "over engineered" and you've done an excellent job, I am in awe of your tool collection and workshop btw. Congrats on you reaching 10K subscribers. Looking forward to your next vid, enjoy your holiday and stay safe :-))
Hello Graham, that is a difficult question. I prefer the manual trans in our LR3. It fits the car much better and is unbreakable. I love the 8HP in my LR4 but it just does not shift when I want it on its own. It is nicer in stop and go traffic. But on country roads I miss a manual trans. The steering wheel shifters are not for me. I do not use them. Useless technology. They belong in a performance SUV which a Discovery is not. Christian
Well, I would not know where to get one to review. Looking at the used car market here in Germany, it's about 45000€ for a 25 year old car with 350000 km on it. There is no way we will ever own a G Wagon. Prices are just ridiculously through the roof here. 🙋♀️ Vera
Congratulations on the 10K subs...Another great video with lots of good info...I built the same sort of slide out as you have and was investigating ways to incorporate a sleeping platform, this video gives me great Ideas as to how I can do this myself Thank you Both👍😀
Landrover might not be the most reliable but oh boy they so much nicer than the competition. In my humble opinion.
Absolutely right. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
