Are They Gonna BALKANIZE Myanmar? | Prof. Dulyapak Preecharush

- After 10 years of international integration and openness, the military has once again overthrown the elected government in 2021 and is leading a junta that has been cracking down hard on its internal enemies. However, the country is much too fractured and too diverse to be brought completely under the military’s control. The ongoing civil war is multi-front and multifaceted. In all of this, external players have just as much an obscure role to play as the internal stakeholders.
So, what is happening in Myanmar? To make sense of it all, we’ve got with us today Dr. Dulyapak Preecharlat who is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and the Deputy Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies at Thammasat University in Bangkok.
Isn't Aung Sung a CIA assets?
As usual, democracy, human rights playbook of a foreign country.
Aung San (b. 1915) was assassinated in 1947. Perhaps the Japanese considered him an asset during their occupation of Burma but they learned otherwise as the tides of war turned.
Aung San's daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi (b. 1945), could perhaps be considered an asset to the Myanmar junta and the tatmadaw since they have detained her (house arrests & prison) for roughly 18 of the last 36 years.
The junta is fighting for sovereignty. Ang sung is CIA. China deals only with the government in charge. They don't meddle with all these bullcrap that this guy is spouting. At least in my country, they do that. Never arm the rebel group because they are countering the Americans system. That's what they mean by not pouring fuel on fire.
Aung San Suu Kyi is certainly an American asset. The West calls it a civil war. In reality, it's an American Imperial war directed at, containing China.
Thank-you for an informed and balanced report on the state of affairs in the Union of Myanmar. A wise and wonderful guest. Well done, Pascal.
Wonderful insight and thank you so much for picking up this subject. Prof. Dulyapak Preecharush clearly put together the overall political perspective of the Myanmar people.
The previous government under the lady, was managed by the West and was never really independent, last I heard it was Australian insert that was pulling the chains. It is imperative that has we all seek independent governments, the people need to be educated as to their political rights and the more exposure they get through channels like these, will allow a non military, non western aligned governance to take its place, due to this adverse economic climate our recovery will be slow and painful, but will happen nevertheless, the world is at our feet lets be vigilant of outside interference with local enablers and expose them and turn the population against them and we will scream from the outside. Thank you for this well informed programme and giving voice to the oppressed. Appreciated.
One thing to note, "tatmadaw" just means army in Burmese. It's not a special name.
The media use it as a scare word and means of deligitimation, like they use the word 'Taliban' for the Afghan government or 'Houthis' instead of Yemenis.
This conversation deserves far better audio quality for Dr. Preecharlat!! It’s very difficult to make out what he’s saying. Need a mic!🎤
He has Vietnamese accent that's why 😅😂
Great discussion. Very informative.
And I understood everything perfectly fine.
Bryan Berletic on the New Atlas has a slightly different take on Manyanma, oops spelling,. His take is from a geopolitical perspective where the US has long-term goals of surrounding and isolating China and Russia with US friendly nations hostile to these two emerging powers. This is to maintain US hegemony in a unipolar world.
The US created offshoots of the CIA to deal with regime changes using proxy NGOs such as the Nationsl Endowment for Democracy, plus a few others. These NGOs are to project soft diplomatic power by creating grass roots organizations to act as opposition political groups. These are funded directly and indirectly by Washington to provide plausible deniability of foreign interference in the domestic politics of a sovereign nation. The woman who led the opposition group was elected into power by outspending the local candidate with election funding and logistical support from the US.
The military recognized the foreign interference and led a coup to oust the imposter government funded by the US to give effect to US foreign policy in SE Asia.
Since the coup the US has funded armed opposition to the military government. They have targeted any government employee with lethal attacks. The ousted woman leader has recieved awards from the NED in Washington for her services to freedom and democracy.
Similar tactics have been used in colour revolutions in Poland, Georgia, Ukraine, and similar disruptions in the Xinjiang province of China, Syria, the attempted coup in Venezuela, as well as successful regime changes that have occurred more subtlety.
Apparently Thailand is being targeted.
China has been promoting its belt and road initiative which the US sees as a threat to US hegemony and using these tactics to disrupt and close down China's good relations with its neighbour's.
Brian berletic is not wrong in his assessment of us imperial foreign policy this much we can all agree. But he is not an expert on this subject matter of Myanmar.
Dr. Preecharush is the expert with first hand involvement. However you may not agree on his take because he represents Thailand's national interests as a foreign policy advisor.
Thailand has to balance the great powers in the region carefully.
And that is neutrality in the multi-polar world.
Thanks for the report.
Myanmar situation is complex. The majority ethnicity i.e. the Burmanese caused the initial problem by abandoning the founding constitution under which the ethnic minorities had many rights agreed upon during the creation of Myanmar. The burmanese majority has intented an assimilationist policy for many decades but failed. They should re-institute the rights gained by the minorities during the federation was created.
Dr. Preecharush is an actual foreign policy adviser who gets invited to visit military installations across Thailand Myanmar border, attends the Thailand-Myanmar high level military and diplomatic meetings and has first hand knowledge of the intelligence and developments regarding the war. His foreign policy stance in Thailand is very multipolar, realist and neutrality based but coming from Thailand's national interests. I know this as a Thai person following his actual academic work written in Thai and his blogs for years. He is a regional peace keeping force. On public Thai television debating foreign policy stance, he is that person representing realist thinking with pro-US/China left and right of the panel. Everyone should pay more attention to Dr. Preecharush. I would argue that he is the authority over this matter in this region over any other source. Our language barrier as Thai people make it difficult for him to share his knowledge in English but he is doing his best - welcome to the multipolar, multi-cultural-dialectal world!
Dr Preecharush kept saying "China wants to control Myanmar" while "the West aids democracy movements" - so much so that Pascal had to remind him that the West, led by the US, also supports dictators.
How objective can the doctor's views be when his judgement can be so one-sided as to ignore recent history in West Asia and North Africa?
For example, how the US brought "freedom and democracy" to countries like Iraq and Libya.
The doctor might have access to high-level information, but his biases are clear and, in my opinion, call into question his objectivity.
Exactly my thoughts
What they did to the Rohingya is unforgivable- please bring educated guests who are not puppets of the West.
It seems the military is trying to hold Myanmar together as a nation. Autocratic even brutal, yes but alternative democratic paths lead to long-term balkanization. So it should be viewed as gray like the separatists rather than black evil as it also have its own nationalistic points, no? Myanmar collapsed, China lose access into Bay of Bengal, US happy. Everyone else dead or poorer. ASEAN will have a powder keg next door esp Thailand and the trade routes. Worse, if PH become another Ukraine then SEA is going to be chaotic, weakened and cornered. All regional potential and prosperity diminished as will the global east- west trades. This will affect global gdp quite by a bit. Destabilisation negatively affect everyone
Tamadaw is not interested in the Pinlong Agreement. Although there are officially 135 ethnic groups in Myanmar, bama constitutes 60% of the population. Tamadaw pushes the bama language and culture to other ethnic groups and meets with, unsurprisingly, resistance.
Myanmar have six different ID card, from pink, green, down to white. People who hold white ID cards don't have much rights. Rohingya people are considered invaders, not citizens.
He seems to be an Aung Sung supporter, and she’s a NED product!
Dr. Preecharush's views published in the Thai media comes across as very realist multipolar - in fact he's being increasingly targeted by NED stooges in Thailand - his depth of knowledge about the subject matter is unparalleled in the region.

Thank you for this great interview. I've never even heard of this place before. Very interesting. I guess the British didn't find anything of real value, underestimating the value of frontiers. Hopefully the people can find a way forward with peace and prosperity and limit the naferious NGO activities. Great, thanks Pascal. Always being educated. From Ireland 🇮🇪

Please check up Brian Berletic of The New Atlas regarding Myanmar.
Brian Berletic doesnt even begin to compare with the knowledge Dr. Preecharush has about Myanmar. Berletic is a former US marine living in Thailand with just about as much knowledge as you or me. Thanks for your input regarding Dr Preecharush.
Power in world is pathetic everyone can only dare on weaker and if they have 30 buddies behind them, politicians would cry on front in 3 seconds... But send 18 years old kids to die, even women... This world is truly pathetic....

🎉there are three oppositions parties.
It sounds like Myanmar is on the frontline between democracy and autocracy. With all that is going on in Ukraine, Palestine and Taiwan, I pray there are enough weapons for Myanmar. Outside of China, Myanmar is the world's second largest source of rare earth minerals, which will be crucial to the democratic West in its battle against the autocratic forces and powers from elsewhere. If democracy can prevail in Myanmar, the country could be at the center of the West's efforts to transition away from environmentally destructive fossil fuels that have plagued humanity for centuries.

C'mon man. Get Yauheni on again.
I was born in SFRY.
Me too. Not that it matters but my skin crawl when anybody try to explain what happened in nineties. Balkanisation is derogative term as I understand it.
Smrt fashizmu, sloboda narodu!
If at all helpful. The situation is in flux. No unity. No clear winner, yet. Regional warlords want dominance of their own domains. More or less that's what I gathered. Only writing 'cause some comments saying it was hard to follow. In no way am I an expert.
Oooh, yes watch out for the “theys”! Those “theys” are out to getcha!
They can't China will tell them not to try.
China prefers a united Myanmar, it's much easier to negotiate with one party i/o several when it comes to political & economical engagement.
