The infected blood scandal is not unique to the UK.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s many other countries also passed along contaminated blood to thousands of unsuspecting people.
But in most of those places, the reckoning came earlier - with compensation payouts and even criminal convictions secured years, and sometimes decades, ago.
Opportunities missed by successive governments of all parties here in the UK.

Maybe the penny will finally drop that these people don’t care about normal people.
Why do the British have such a problem with taking responsibility? Hillsborough, Post Office, Blood Scandal. There's so many. Why?
Australia still doesn’t acknowledge that this ever happened. A disgrace !
Kenneth Clarke displayed such a callous attitude towards the victims
Decades for accountability and justice, this has happened too many times in the UK, it needs to stop.
We know exactly why they covered it up, because the Americans told them to, and like good little dogs they followed their commands.
jail the ministers
NHS is saddled with the expense, while American companies profited at the victims cost.
Why is noone talking about the perpetrators at the source: the US! What responsibility do they bear for exporting infected blood?
Even Portugal had a scandal like this solved in 1996.
This is NOT a day of shame for the British State, most of us have been consistently ignored for decades. It's a day of shame for Parliament and the Civil Service. Ideally we need a clean sweep of all Parties, MPs, and the First Division of the Civil Service. Add in the Home Office, Health, Treasury and associated business structures.
What about the suppliers of the blood - the USA where is their accountability?
Kenneth Clarke shown his true colours
Institutions at the highest level covering for each other, just like Hillsborough taking decades, but this is so many more deaths, so many more families. My heart breaks for them. The Government, the Police, Whitehall ministers, the media, recently the post office, the inland revenue with carers and now the NHS all covering their backsides. I used to be proud of this country, the last thing I thought was great was the NHS.
Maybe everyone will quit Bashing people who refused blood transfusions all these years. They were the smart ones
4 YEARS FOR MURDER
MAKE MINISTERS FULLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS!
What all these scandals highlight for me is the utter contempt - the Govt , MPs , the Judiciary , the Civil Service , the Police The Post Office The Water Companies - have for ordinary people. Am i making myself clear -
Fun fact. I'm Canadian. I lived in the UK in the late 90s. When I went home, I was no longer allowed to give blood for 18yrs. Not good in military theater, right? Just my experience. But, apparently, nothing to see here...Hmmmmmmm
Nothing happens to these corrupt politicians .. we elect them to serve us and they serve the multinationals and themselves .. but we are good at branding other governments as dictators
