AOE2 on PS2 is actually pretty good when you realize that you can just plug in any mouse or keyboard to your ps2 and it works perfectly. Another game that uses that is HL1, making it a great port. Of course, you could just play it on your PC.
As a child who didn't have a PC, AOE2 PS2 was my jam between about 2002-2008 until I got my first PC. I absolutely rinsed that version, despite the awful controls, 100 pop limit and lack of a level editor, I loved it :D
Hey @zade if you liked Age of Kings for DS you would love Age of Mythology for DS. Same gameplay but with that mythology feel and extra effects which keep the turn based meta interesting. If any of you are looking for a chess-style challenge I highly recommend giving it a try(: (and thank you for giving turn based AoE the respect it rightfully deserves!)
Should've really put AoC with UserPatch on here, given that's how the competitive scene played for about 10 years. I bet you can still find grumpy people to play against on Voobly, too
I played a TON of AOE3 on my mobile phone and it was a blast. I tried AOE2 as well, but 3 was a bit more polished. And they even added the simplified version of shipments (those cards you send from your homecity) from the original game. It was way easier to play it using actual phone. I even tried AOE3: Asian Dynasties on the phone, but it was a bit harder and I quickly decided to stick with the original. Although Asian Dynasties was fun in a sense that it added 3 civs you could play as: Japan, China and India. They even had two campaigns, if I recall correctly, about wars in Korea. Ahh, the memories.
You should have mentioned Voobly that maintained the pro scene for a long time, even when HD came out. And that it had its own updates patches expansions etc
for someone ho cleraly wasn't born in the 80 you really should research that no one ever said feature phone, at least not in the real orld, and phones that had colour displays polyphony could play moviies could play mp3 had internet and could run games were called smartphones, the apple clones were called touch phones to distinguish from PPC and smartphones
As someone who didn't get a PC that could play AOE2 until around 2010, I think, the PS2 version ruled. I still remember my dad's disbelief over the PS2 version even existing when I asked him for a copy of it, lol. I played a lot of Team Island Regicide with my cousins during the school holidays, passing the controller around every 10 minutes or so.
Oooo.. gr8 vid!. I never knew there were so much versions of AOEII! I remember a few years after the Conquerors Expansion, I found a AOEII clone, Star Wars branded! Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds! Not a bad clone, and was definitely fun; especially if someone is a Star Wars fan. I also remember being a bit annoyed with the release of AOEIIDE as I at that time bought the HD edition. But the upgrades of DE was worth it after a while.
I would probably say your segment on the PS2 version needs to be revisited. Not only because you emulated the game instead of using real hardware (which could explain any performance drops you're suffering), but also because this version _actually_ _had_ proper keyboard and mouse support when you plugged them into the USB ports. The only real valid concern I can see otherwise is the resolution being too small.
I am glad AoE2 DE came out because i played the CD versions into the ground but never really played the HD version for one reason or another but i have played a ton of DE and i am really happy to see some of AoE 1 campaigns starting to come over.
aoe2ps2 is literally the same aoe2 but lower resolution and well patched against teutons tc and patched against castle-building fishing boats almost same controls with k+m same maps same everything. some voicelines inside campaigns are missing
I'm actually surprised the game wasn't ported to even more platform. Not even a iPhone/Android/Windows Phone release? In my mind, AoE2 is the strategy game version of RE4/Doom of being ported to everything.
It may be the nostalgia kicking in but i remember AoE2 on the console to be quite good for it's time. Not the greatest game for playing on a tiny CRT and whenever the game loaded it sounded like a Nuclear reactor going into meltdown but a more than welcome substitute for someone who didn't have a PC yet As for the noise that came off it...damn. trying to play it in the early mornings was a challenge
my brother showed me de and content on it till we got pcs to play it and it is amazing my brother played when it was age of kings edition I hope it really grows and establish a good culture whith our lord daut as our leader
remapping a gamepad to keyboard is bad? ahahhaha what that's some posterior hands out there. and then aoe2ps2 LITERALLY support usb keyboards and usb mice
the best pathfinding the series has seen in aoe1 aoe3 aom age of star wars aoe1de aoe3de aomex aoe4 aoe2 pathfinding is the worst in the whole genre because of the stupid broken formations
hd remade and rebalanced half the game expanded all the civs significantly added like 3x the amount of civs and what the hell all that terrible footage? stretched aspect ratio, modified textures, extra low resolution
aoe1 could even dream of? you show me how you play rome cavalry against carthage elephants or rome archers against anyone or makedonian priests aoe2 added 1 unique unit half of which are fantasy bullshit like franks and that is all it was never brave to remove an entire line from a civ and all th so called improvements were added in DE aok is like a downgrade from aoe in some sense if you like slog and sieges then yes it was an upgradee. aoe1 plays like warcraft and cnc, aoe2 plays like a slog because all units suck at destroying buildings, you always need trebs and rams all the fun and diverse things were added in DE and even then half of it is fantasy bullshit ahem KATAPURUTO
This is only comment I've received in recent memory that the volume is too low - is it definitely just my videos? What about earlier ones? I'm always balancing to the same Db and it's not the microphone that controls that

Actually the poo limit for PS2 was 75
Oh brother, seeing that phone version sended me in a huge trip down memory lane. Amazing content as always Zade!
I will always make the argument that AoEII revolutionized the RTS genre and really made it the genre it is today.
it absolutely did
The AoE3 cellphone game was neat. Guess the AoE2 one crawled so that one could walk.
And shoutouts to Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
Including SWGB would've been quite funny... it is basically AOE2 after all. I'll be trying the AOE3 Java game next!

I've been playing it a bit for another video actually! Agreed, it's quite good
Zade's Mum is hiding her affiliation with Nod because she's concerned about GDI agents - so she said AOE instead of C&C
Should've really put AoC with UserPatch on here, given that's how the competitive scene played for about 10 years. I bet you can still find grumpy people to play against on Voobly, too

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. AOEII engine with Star Wars textures.
You should do more videos with your mum. That kinda stuff is always fun to watch.
Man I wish I knew about the Java (MIDlet?) version of the game back then, it would have kept me entertained for a long time.
Fun quirky video! Some nice gags had me chuckling, thanks
when I had the Ps2, I could fix the cursor problem by plugging in the mouse!, and yes it worked flawlessly !
bro, you did whaaaat? O__O
IMPRESSIVE!!
I had no idea AOE2 was on PS2. I need a copy. Good video.
Thank you :)
Man, I loved the java AoE III port.
for someone ho cleraly wasn't born in the 80

you should do a review on battle realms bro, it's a classic RTS from the 2000's era that has acult following.

This game's got an identity and feel thats forever sealed into my memory.
I am glad AoE2 DE came out because i played the CD versions into the ground but never really played the HD version for one reason or another but i have played a ton of DE and i am really happy to see some of AoE 1 campaigns starting to come over.
> HD Edition was well loved
> The frequency bugs and game dropping creating the meme "Thanks HD"
You did a good job on this video, all the same.
aoe2ps2 is literally the same aoe2 but lower resolution

After covering a DS game here, any plans to look at the advanced wars games? They're sweet
In terms of brand recognition I think the only game that comes close or perhaps exceeds it is civ
11:56 someone have never played games
Awesome video. Really enjoyed this one 👍
thanks avcan! like your plane
I had the DS version - it was a good time
I remember playing the Java version in my phone. Right in the feelings.
It may be the nostalgia kicking in but i remember AoE2 on the console to be quite good for it's time. I remember when my parents bought me Age of Empires 2 for my 9th birthday...
That was 23 years ago...
Hello there, I am a Men of War player and a veteran of the series, having been with it for nearly 20 years. Do you still need help with that?
I did played the Age of Empires 2 mobile phone version once and the AoE3 as well. I was... something else. The AoE3 was actually really good
Age of Empires is one of the RTS greats.
my brother showed me de and content on it till we got pcs to play it and it is amazing my brother played when it was age of kings edition I hope it really grows and establish a good culture whith our lord daut as our leader
I suppose I should finally get around to playing this game at some point. But which version should I use? I doubt I have a PS2 :(
Galactic Battlegrounds is the version you should use
You said every version, but you neglected to show off the Xbox version of the Definitive Edition!
What nugget sauce is that? Be careful, you will be judged based on your answer.
sweet and sour boss
I had the oldschool mobile version
Age 2 DE is one if not rhe best RTS currently, it just destroys age od disney IV
Is AoE2:TC great like AoE2:AoK?
AKSHAULLY - you missed out the Age of Empires Expandable card game based on AoE2: Age of Kings - pffffft do your research 🤪. srsly great vid as always
Umm AKSHUALLY I am aware of it.... It's going into another video soon and I am not kidding
Thnx g
🤣@@Zade_95
The DS versions seems similar to Advance Wars
Can use a Mouse for PS2
Speaking of 2 (You know AOE 2, PS 2), would You give a try for another 2? StarCraft 2? 😉
At some point!
😁
someone never beat dune2 sega warcraft 2 playstation
or native sega rts games not ports
try and stop me
The best version of AOE2 was Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. I am still waiting for a definitive edition of that😢
you'll love the next video
tech tree is almost a copy of aoe1
all research was added in DE aok has barely anything
On Nokia... 🤔
I loved the mobile version of AOE3, but it was kinda jank
You missed aoe2de on the xbox. compare it to aoe2 ps2
I did think about that one, do wish I'd included it now but there's another video I have in the pipeline that will cover it... ;)
remapping a gamepad to keyboard is bad? ahahhaha what that's some posterior hands out there. and then aoe2ps2 LITERALLY support usb keyboards and usb mice
first. nice video.
Hah, thanks!
Cute NZ accent, lol.
the best pathfinding the series has seen in aoe1 aoe3 aom age of star wars aoe1de aoe3de aomex aoe4
aoe2 pathfinding is the worst in the whole genre because of the stupid broken formations
But why?
Just.....Why? lol.
hd remade and rebalanced half the game expanded all the civs significantly added like 3x the amount of civs
and what the hell all that terrible footage? stretched aspect ratio, modified textures, extra low resolution
pasthfinding in aoe2 is literally 10 times worse than aoe1
even in HD
even in DE
cossacks, aoe3 and aoe4 are better. starcraft is not
aoe1 could even dream of? you show me how you play rome cavalry against carthage elephants
or rome archers against anyone
or makedonian priests
aoe2 added 1 unique unit half of which are fantasy bullshit like franks and that is all
it was never brave to remove an entire line from a civ

all the fun and diverse things were added in DE and even then half of it is fantasy bullshit ahem KATAPURUTO
The xbox version is also pretty crap.
Dude, buy a new microphone, I'm begging you, I have to crank my volume up on your videos because your volume is so low.
This is only comment I've received in recent memory that the volume is too low - is it definitely just my videos? What about earlier ones? I'm always balancing to the same Db and it's not the microphone that controls that
@@Zade_95 I have the same experience. The volume on your videos is quite low in my opinion. This has been the case for years at this point.
