Coming from a guy who took a long time to embrace the idea of an e-bike. I purchased this bike a few weeks ago because my city is the third hilliest city in the country, and man i love this thing. Performs beautifully as a traditional bike but when you encounter a hill it's like a gentle push from behind. Bike is awesome, I carry this bike up three flights of stairs whenever I ride it no problem. I haven't even had to use the highest setting yet.

I rode an fx 2+ recently and it was very fun. Felt great without the motor as well.

I have this bike, and wish the rack was a bit wider. Otherwise, I'm liking it a lot. It behaves a lot like my "real" bikes when the pedal assist is not employed.

Largely agree with your assessment. If I keep it mostly in ECO, saving mid and turbo for the bigger hills, I can get the stated 35 mile range. If you use turbo a lot, you'll chop that range down by quite a bit. I hook up my old phone to the handlebars and use the Trek Central app where I can get a visual display of the assist level setting and estimated miles left at that setting. Agree with below comment, I wish rack was wider, also on a minor gripe the plastic adjust piece on the end of the kickstand is cheesy and doesn't really stayed locked into position well. Got caught in a pretty good downpour with wet roads after and bike held up well.

I'd like to see this bike with the pinion gearbox

But what do you do when the battery has reached the end of its life? You can't just buy a replacement battery and keep on riding it, because the battery is inside the downtube. You'll be stuck with a 40-pound bike with no assist. A detachable battery is also better because you can charge it away from your house (if you're concerned about your garage going up in flames), without leaving the entire bike outside to get stolen.

I'm not familiar with this bike but other e-bikes with the battery built into the down tube can have the battery removed from the down tube by a bike mechanic and replaced.
I would guess it's the same with this one.
Also 40nm isn't very powerful but it's a nice assist on a hill.
The current range of similar Bosch and Yamaha 250 watt motors have 85 and 95nm of torque respectively. I think Bafang also. The Bosch powertube batteries are removable for separate charging. I don't know about the others.

@@tconnolly9820 If the add-on battery for this bike costs $500, I can just imagine what it would cost for a bike shop to remove the primary battery from the downtube and install a new one. Considering the bike's value at 5+ years old, it would make more financial sense to just buy a new one, and throw the old one in the landfill.

@@GNMi79 I don't know about North America but there are a lot of independent e-bike service centres opening up for the growing market in Europe.
Most batteries when they are losing charging capacity may only need a few cells replaced at a fraction of the cost. The same with motors that could be repaired or refurbished instead of replaced also for a fraction of the cost.
I would hate to throw away a good e-bike when it can be maintained for many more years of reliable use.

@@tconnolly9820 Having an amateur bike mechanic replace a few of the battery cells sounds like a surefire way to burn your garage down the next time you charge the bike. Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

    • @tconnolly9820
      @tconnolly9820 Месяц назад +1

@@GNMi79 I think you are deliberately taking the wrong end of the stick.
I'm talking about reputable independent repair centres doing guaranteed repairs and refurbs using quality parts. Not someone who is an amateur doing shoddy unsupportable work.
In many battery packs, sometimes the problem is just a few faulty cells need to be replaced and it's almost as good as new.
      Replacing quality for quality.
Almost all e-bike and scooter battery fires are from cheap(!) generic battery packs or similar conversion kits.
Fire's from Bosch, Panasonic, Yamaha, or other high quality manufacturers are extremely rare.
The same applies to upgrading older e-car batteries and there is a growing industry in independent garages doing these upgrades.
Similarly with motors for e-bikes. Personally I believe in repairing and refurbishing instead of just dumping something that's otherwise perfectly as good as new.
E-bikes should be like ordinary bikes or motorbikes. Everything that's attached to the frame in any way should be repairable or replaceable for at least 20 years.
That's why I went for a full Bosch system.
There were several bike shops who couldn't guarantee parts or components after 5 years which is disgraceful for a machine costing several thousands.
I know a couple who bought a pair of relatively cheap generic e-bikes a few years ago. After the warranties expired they were both unrepairable within two years. Expensive recycling.
This is disgraceful and shouldn't be allowed.
