Valentino said that Stoner was his greatest adversary and I would agree with that. Stoner's Ducati was very different from Rossi's Ducati, but you have to acknowledge that Stoner drew every last ounce out of his bike. A bit of a whinger, but who hasn't been? As far as I'm concerned, the only rider who has challenged Rossi, as the greatest of all time. Sad that he chose to retire so young.Like Rossi, won the title for two different manufacturers and also like Rossi, won on bike that he shouldn't have done on.

I wanted (and still want) to see an Italian win a title on an Italian bike. Agusta wasn't the same.... They were so far ahead of the opposition. Back from the Cagiva days it has been a long wait in the 500/MotoGP class. Only Stoner has done it, and he was not really very Italian.... at all.
He was an extraordinary talent at a time when there were many greats. It is significant the no other rider quite got there (to the title). Even though the owners are now German, I still want to see an Italian win the title on a Duke. I'm sad like that.
But chapeau to Stoner for making it look rideable. Quite a rider!

The only rider to win championships on different factory bikes after VR46 & the only rider to win championship on Ducati bike. If he can win Championship on Ducati bike, winning championship on Yamaha bike is a piece of cake for him since Yamaha got good traction while speeding in fast flowing corners due to crossplane crankshaft engine which allow Yamaha bike to use less traction control electronics which indeed save engine power in fast corners.

He didn't agree with the politics going on behind the scenes of MotoGP. Think he blamed Dorna for ruining the sport and just fell out of love with it. Shame, he was a class act.

Never understood why so many moaned about Stoner until I went to the British GP and heard him whinging on mic about non friendly signs by fans re Stoner around the circuit which I couldn't understand the reason for that either. I thought he proved he was a great rider and think if he was still there #93 would not have had his own way so much.

Yeah I couldn't understand either, he was way too sensitive to those things all he had to do was ride and that says it all. reading his book and although he defends himself well even in those pages he comes across overly whingy, not that it matters much I guess, but a sportsman should also be an ambassador to his own reputation also to the sport itself.

While Rossi made by his own hand all his bikes! What a super-man in Nietzsche sense! Rider, developer and manifacturer! So big the day jumped on the "bike made in collaboration with the tyre house" was 2 seconds slower ahahah
