This is the plot of "Johnny got his gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The novel written in 1938 that this song was based on. Copied from Wikipedia.
"Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
Joe attempts suicide by suffocation, but finds that he had been given a tracheotomy that he can neither remove nor control. At first Joe wishes to die, but he later decides that he desires to be placed in a glass box and toured around the country in order to show others the true horrors of war. Joe successfully communicates these desires with military officials after months and months of banging his head on his pillow in Morse code. However, he realizes that the military will not grant his wishes, as it is "against regulations". It is implied that he will live the rest of his natural life in his condition.
As Joe drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend, and reflects upon the myths and realities of war."

    • @ilovetovape722
      @ilovetovape722 6 лет назад +9

here you go.... The lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."
James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band.

One of the best reactions I've seen, guys. I really like your patient, attentive style. Master of Puppets and One are probably two of the greatest metal songs ever made so it's gonna be hard to top them, but still, Metallica's 80's catalog is chock full of similarly fantastic tracks. As many others already said, *Fade to Black* would be one of the obvious choices to go with, for instance.
In this video you talk about how you found it interesting that the music by itself already told the most of the story, that lyrics were almost not needed. If you'd like to go further in that vein, Metallica also has two of the best metal instrumentals ever composed under their belt, which are actually from the same two albums Master and One are from, so it could be interesting to make it a double pairing and react to them first. They're called *Orion* and *To Live is to Die* . Orion (from the album _Master of Puppets_ ) was mostly the creation of their late bassist who was killed in their tour bus in an accident, and To Live is to Die (from _...And Justice for All_ ) was a song dedicated to his memory, so both are very dear to Metallica fans.

The book that One is based on is called Johnnys got a gun. It’s an American anti war novel that I highly recommend you read. It really shines new light on how horrific war is by showing the worst imaginable situation a soldier could end up in. It also gives you better understanding of the lyrics ”hold my breathe as I wait for death”, the injured soldier literally tries to kill himself by holding his breath because he cannoy communicate with the outside world that he does not want to live like this.

  • @lynchmob72
    @lynchmob72 6 лет назад +8

It is very literal at the end. It's about a soldier who stepped on a landmine and survived.. He wakes up in the hospital unable to hear, see, or speak. With his arms and legs blown off... he is literally trapped in his own mind.

Considering that you're new to the song your ability to discern and interpret the lyrics and associate the music with imagery is refreshing. I first heard this in 1988 when it was released and have listened to it countless times and you even gave me something to chew on - I'd never noticed that the fast drum chops resembled a Gatling gun. That'll stay with me now. Thanks, good luck and happy listening.

One incredibly beautiful thing about this song is that no matter who you are, or what your life experience has been, you can relate to it in one way or anyother. Everyone has been through their own battles, and have been through and fought with something that left them feeling shattered, empty, and sometimes genuinely made them wish for death. Theyve felt that solemn sadness, and that pure rage that this song is able to capture so elegantly and in such a raw, real way. No matter if weve fought on a physical battlefield or a mental one, weve all had our metaphorical arms and legs blown off, and our soul taken from us. And weve all wished for this life to be cut off from us. Truly a masterpiece.

This is really timeless. The story in the lyrics could be relevant to almost any conflict in any period of time. The universal agony of war and having your body and life destroyed by it.
The music almost tells the story as much as the lyrics do.
This was always what I loved about metallica. Everything was always so carefully crafted and executed. Every instrument has its place, every note in time with the lyrics. So much more than what the genre of 'thrash metal' indicates.
The lyrics were almost always thought provoking and in depth. When so much rock is over simplified with over repetition of lines and simplicity of the instrumentals, etc.
Metallica will always kick ass... evidenced by these guys, who arent rockers, that can appreciate a song that was released before they were even born.

I’ve listened to this song countless times, seen dozens of reactions to the song from people of all different walks of life and backgrounds, and 1) the song still gives me chills, 2) I love seeing people hear it for the first time. It’s like they’re in the club now.

Some great metal songs to react to
Pantera - walk ( about backstabbing people who try to use people
Lamb of god - Omerta ( opening line taken from a book on the Sicilian mafia, about their code of silence)
Mudvayne - death blooms (about feeling trapped in a body that doesn't do s you used to, old age or dissability)
Jinjer - Pisces (watch the live studio recording, this is a MUST for this one, it's about the duality of some people's personality, this one I leave to you t work out the story and meaning. 😉)

Fuck, you guys... I am so impressed with this whole thing. Your analysis and thoughts were on point and interesting, all of them. I liked that you just speak small comments over the music but then pause when you have something to say that might take longer. I hate when the music is paused all the time but also when someone speak over the music all the time and misses key parts through. Your way definitely is the perfect solution. Subscribed.

    Great and insightful read, guys!
Metal demands emotional content, complexity, and precision, as well as aggression, and this song is a fantastic example of the band's musical virtuosity.
Please do a re-react of "One"'s music video, and afterward, watch it a few MORE times for yourselves; the replay value on it is SICKK!

I've listened to this song countless thousands of times since it's release in 1989 and it still gives me goosebumps every time! It's great to see yet more young rap heads listening to it and totally getting it and digging it but I'd definitely recommend watching the official video at high volume as it gives you a completely immersive experience and a very visual idea of what the song is about. Bon voyage on your heavy metal adventures boys.

I believe the song is based on an old movie or novel called something like "Johnny Got A Gun" or something like that. If you get the chance, watch their official trailer and you'll understand it a bit more.

You guys are spot-on about every song and it's really great to see. This track actually brings me to tears when I watch someone else listen to it...
If you want more lyrics that are absolute 🔥🔥, do yourselves a favor and dig into *Rage Against The Machine* (if you haven't already, though being as you're hip hop heads I gotta assume you're onto them). So many earth-shattering tracks. The song _Wake Up_ is devastating and still painfully relevant today, as is _Killing in the Name_ , _Fistful of Steel_ , _Freedom_ , _Know Your Enemy_ , _Take The Power Back_ , oh god just listen to the whole self-titled album. They are 100% hot fire.

I have to say, being on "old guy", lol, that you both were very insightful to the song's message. Based on the book and the subsequent movie called "Johnny Get Your Gun", is shows a young man who goes to war during WWI, and loses his sight, his speech, his hearing, his legs and his arms and is left with nothing but his pain and is own thoughts. You both very well picked up on the horrors men face in the aftermath of war. Check out the actual video for it because it shows clips and sounds from the movie. But very well done lads!

Hi guys. First time on your channel. I’m really enjoying your channel so far. I’m a huge metal/hard rock fan and a huge Metallica fan. First off, may I make a suggestion? There is another channel that I’m a huge fan of called: Lost in Vegas. They do similar what you guys do. My suggestion is inspired by that channel and it’s this: When you guys are going to comment, pause the song please. I noticed this because the part of the song that you heard, “Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul,” I think you missed the beginning of that verse. It actually starts by saying, “Land mine has take my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing,” then goes on to say the rest of what you heard. This guy is in Hell. He’s lost everything. That makes it even more powerful. I offer this suggestion with the highest respect for what you guys are doing, just some positive, constructive feedback. 🙂🙏🏼
Also, Metallica songs with amazing, powerful lyrics:
    Blackened: about destroying Mother Earth
Master of Puppets: about drug addiction
    Disposable Heroes: soldiers in war
    Enter Sandman: evil dreams
    Welcome home (sanitarium): insane asylum
Creeping death: Egyptian plague killing first born sons
    Shortest straw
    Eye of the beholder
BatteryFor whom the bell tolls.... a few other really great songs. I’m confident that there are other excellent Metallica fans that can give more fantastic suggestions. These are just some of my favorites. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Excellent job fellas. I liked and am now a subscriber. Thanks for the fantastic work.
My apologies, I just realized this was a year ago. Hope you guys are going strong.

Yeah! Yeah!! The audio version! Great choice!! Everyone reacts to the videoclip, which is not bad, but has (too) many interruptions from the movie they cutted in between. Many real good parts of this song have been destroyed by that. Thank you very much for pure listening to the music :-)
