This is my reaction to German Satire DESTORYS German Media (Volker Pispers)
In this video I react to German satire comedy from German comedian, satire and kabarett artist Volker Pispers as he provides cutting satire on the German media.

The problem is that people who love and watch Volker already know the stuff he is talking about. We listen to him, because he is so funny and sharp when talking about it and gives us some kind of relief by making us laugh about it. Those who would really need to listen to him sadly never will.
But I guess that is exactly the same everywhere else...
I also find that often times I am aware of the topic in general, but I still get informed about the specifics of involved parties and the actual extent of the issue he is discussing.

Volker is a simple man and a genius.
Volker is a brilliant satirist but also a left-wing ideologue. If you were to examine his satire in detail in relation to reality, you would quickly notice where satire and reality collide. Especially in relation to economics.
I don't think he's simple, I think he was a teacher once. But he knows the language of the common man and that makes you effective! George Carlin, Jimmy Dore examples from the US, Bill Burr and I hope to discover others. You have some examples in Great Britain? I know Johnathan Pie, are there others I should check out?

Yes, he repeatedly voiced his frustrations that he talked about the same topics for decades and nothing really changed in all this time.
When he said conspiracy theory, he meant that it was too obvious what was happening.
You are right. People don't want to know, they love to be distracted, and keep complaining to and expect solutions from the same people who keep them down.

Pispers doesn't just criticize foreign politics and politicians, he is all-out against all pure stupidity, everywhere. Including, or maybe even especially, in Germany. He doesn't suffer fools lightly, to quote The Bard.😂
"Private media". German state funded media is actually in parts very good. Not when it comes to economic journalism but the art, satire, music, philosophy , history and on other topics its the best in the world. The two radio stations WDR3 and WDR5 alone are worth the monthly pay.

Watching this again almost 2 decades later is so sad. Volker tried to provoke people into action. Instead they applauded and went home to watch the news.

It is very useful to know that, because there isn´t much more you have to learn about media in other european countries. For instance, last time I checked, 80% of polish print media were also owned by only 4 companies. 4 german companies.

Did nobody suggest Georg Schramm to you? He is about as badass as Volker (or better) but more entertaining. He is also a grand master of language. Hi monologues sound like Goethes Mephisto. That's probably going to be lost in translation. You should really check this out, Schramm is a God.

To get each and every point - you need to know a lot of context commonly known by German people.
The sub said "Peter Hartz was busy with something completely different" - Volker actually said: "... was stuffing other holes..." refering to him and a few others making a detour from a coach trip to a brothel whilst at the same time promoting "Hartz 4"-laws cutting down money for the (allegedly lazy) unemployed.
Helmut Kohl was our chancellor from 1982 - 1998. He was very close with the big and important - and, obviously, rich people. There was a scandal because his conservative party CDU received some substancial illegal funding - but he got away free due to "his good deeds for Germany". Which obviously wasn't how our justice system is supposed to work. A common term used was "the small ones get hanged - and the big ones walk away free".
Angela Merkel, also with CDU, was in office from 2005 - 2021. She didn't do much in terms of reforms and got flamed for that.
Reforms are hard to do as they hurt (the people) instantly (like reducing public debt) - but positive effects take years to bear fruit. By then - you're out of office due to negative public opinion.
Plus: The only one who did reforms was Gerhard Schröder (between Kohl and Merkel) and it all went one way. Cut down social benefits - negatively effecting the average people. That's still in the back of everyone's mind - and easily triggered by the media mentioned.

1:31 one has to acknowledge, though, that the video is a few years old and things have changed since.
After the collapse of the Iron Curtain and German reunification, capitalism was running its vicotry lap, anything that smelled like "socialism" was frowned upon, even by the supposedly "left" parties. Result was massive cuts in the social system (Hartz IV which is also meantioned in the video) - by Gerhard Schröder, a Social Democrat; a few years earlier, conservatives attempting anything similar would have caused an outcry. And similar austerity measures happened in Britain, under Tony Blair's Labour government.
The SPD (as well as Labour) have since acknowledged that some of what they did has been a mistake. But, yeah. The general gist that the super rich have more political influence than they should have is still true. They won't get everything done that they want. But if they absolutely DON'T want something, they definitely have power enough to prevent it from happening. This is true for Germany, but also the UK, the US, and lots of other places.
That reminds me of old studies:
There have indeed been studies that have examined differences in how journalists in different countries see their role. A well-known study from the 1990s showed that US journalists saw their main role as informing the public, while German journalists also saw a role in shaping opinion and educating readers.
One specific survey that is often cited is that of Weaver and Wilhoit (1996), which found that around 80% of US journalists saw their role primarily as a provider of information. In contrast, according to a study by Hanitzsch et al. (2011), around 60% of German journalists also saw their role as shaping opinion and educating.
Nowadays, US journalists also want to influence opinion-forming.
Dietmar Wischmeyer is another great satirical writer you should look into. he did a series in wich he roast almost every country in the EU and he writes for the Heute Show an did several satiric books on Germans and German Stereotypes.

Nah, AfD isn't for the 10%, AfD is for the 1%. They are pretty expensive, so you better got more ground for yourself than anybody else if you want to vote for them.

You have some kind of predicament with translating Pispers in several ways.
1) You want to translate everything in a meaningful way (with explanations to german idioms/politics/etc.)
a) The text flies by faster than a certain squirrel on energydrinks.
b) You have to pause Volker nearly every sentence to have the time for all explanations and stuff he says.
2) You cut some information/sentences to have a fluid Video and at least see to it, that the point made comes across as clearlyy as possible.
Love you beins so into Pispers with everything involved. Perhapst someone should go through his stuff (as a native german speaker) and do thorough walkthroughs on them. :D

Remove Dieter Nuhr from that list. Maybe 10 years ago but certainly not now. Sadly.
@@NotBroihon Non-sense. What people are trying to frame Nuhr as negative is _exactly_ the same as Pispers does here. It's just that the tenor of conversation in the public has changed now. If Pispers would do his act today with modern politics, people would try to cancel him out just as much as they are trying with Nuhr today.

Die Zuschauer dachten damals - wie Pispers es ja selbst manchmal angesprochen hat - er gäbe eine Verschwörungstheorie von sich. "Ein bißchen wird was dran sein aber weit übertrieben".
Unfortunaly some of the jokes are victims to the translation...and the full video is even better.
But seriously, today it's way more worse as it was these few years ago.
In these media companies and also in politics, not just in germany, the normalisation of right wing narratives and anti-social market radicalism is overwhelming.
And it works like it has always worked...same time real and often left wing opposition is marginalized and purged.
Today it is normalized to scapegoating against poor people and of course foreigners and refugees, the counter to this is very rare and often people are scared.
Especially these "boulevard media" like Bild, Welt, or in GB the Sun etc are a big part of this normalisation and propaganda, poison the people in their dumbness.
And to be clear here, also war crimes, violation of international law or even genozide is more and more downplayed or even accepted, opposition silenced or
criminalized.
Pispers would draw a big 'Happy'-Smiley in his calendar on the day a socialist/communist party would come to power in Germany.😜

About manipulation from media:
In media psychology (one of my study subjects) are some proven effects of media on public, for example the effect of "agenda setting"
(= mass media does not directly form our opinion, but what is up in the media is what people talk about (and everything that is not a current media interest does not have public interest)).
Try to remember the headlines from half a year ago or even last month. See?
People should reflect critically what topics are presented in the media and why thoose topics are presented
(and none of all the other important topics that could have been choosen instead)
On the note of Hartz IV, the previous German unemployment act from 2005, it gets much worse when you put it into context.
It'll get slightly economic so I apologise in advance for any resulting boredom or damage to your gray matter, I know it's not always a fun topic.
The fact that a law may have been influenced or even written directly by private interest is bad in and of itself, but beyond the evident corruption it doesn't really cause any shock.
That is why I would like to showcase how far reaching Hartz IV has been and some of the really major problems it has caused.
Let me preface it with this, I am not going to say Germany has fault for everything going wrong, but there is a massive part of economic blame Germany has to take, and Hartz IV is a core part of the problem, enough preamble though.
Germany, like many countries, is part of the EU and more importantly, the Eurozone. In the Eurozone there are certain goals and guidelines to be kept, one of these guidelines is a goal of 2% inflation, a number many people will know.
Germany was a key player supporting this 2% rate, so far so good.
The idea with steady inflation is to make borrowing for private individuals and companies more bearable, as a steady rate of inflation would mean the mortgage you took for your home is 20% cheaper in real times 10 years down the line.
This target inflation rate is not unified across the Eurozone. This means not every country in the EU follows the same inflation rate, but they depend locally on the country, generally the claim is this allows for more targeted policy.
The problem, it does not work. Inflation has another effect, how competitive a country is on the international stage, so prices for it's exported goods, and also it's domestic demand.
Generally, inflation comes directly from the labour unit cost, so the cost of work relative to the productivity. I say this because inflation is almost linearly related to these wage increases.
Essentially wage increases that are not covered by corresponding increases in productivity are in almost all cases inflationary.
Why is this important? Because countries which pay handsomely beyond their productivity will experience high inflation, while countries who pay low wages relative to their productivity will have low inflation.
The former will find the prices of their goods rise abroad, while the other will find it's exports becoming cheaper, but in return local demand will crash, because you are paying your workers less than they are actually producing.
Because the target of 2%, and in turn labour unit costs, are not the same across the EU and the Eurozone, it means different European countries are in a struggle to out compete each others exports by slashing their own wages, and thus their own inflation.
This is where Germany comes in, while Germany argued for a target inflation of 2%, it's own inflation has regularly been far beneath it, while other European countries like Spain were above it, causing the average to be around 2%.
But what happened in reality was that wages were depressed in Germany, causing local demand to be much lower than it should be, but making it's exports much more competitive than other, comparable economies like France or Italy.
And now you can ask yourself, what caused wages to deflate in Germany, relative to other EU countries? Agenda 2010, or it's other name Hartz IV.
It depressed wages on the lower end, causing German exports to spike, which might sound positive, but someone has to pick up the cost for it, which are the other trade partners, especially in Europe.
Countries like France or Italy, who had higher inflation closer to the 2% target, were essentially being driven out of business by inflation, while Germany kept it low at the cost of it's domestic economy.
This influx of foreign cash meant Germany could afford to lower government spending, ending up with one of the lowest debt to GDP ratios in the world, unfortunately this isn't positive.
It means quite a few of the lost jobs in other EU nations, like France, Spain, Greece and Italy, are jobs done in Germany because of this advantage.
Essentially, Germany is being financed by it's European partners due to it loan dumping, both the average workers in Germany and their European trade partners are being shafted for the sake of improved export margins and profit for the companies managing the export business, so to speak.
I am not going to go into too much detail, the comment is long enough, but as you can see we have an economic battle between countries that should work together for their economic interests, with the Germans just coming out on top, and an essential tool for it was Hartz IV within a common currency.
It is even worse because Shengen allows people from those countries, who lost their own domestic production lines due to loan dumping in Germany, to migrate freely into Germany, causing brain drain in those countries. Balkan countries like Greece and Bulgaria are incredible examples for it.
Now to finish it off, all of this, due to some private business interest writing a law in one of the key countries in the EU.
Mind you, those business interests will have made great profits setting up in cheaper EU countries as well, no matter the high inflation as loan costs were so much cheaper from the start, while domestic companies won't be able to deal with the inflation and die out, leading to local business being decimated with only affluent foreign firms being able to deal with the high loan costs and inflation.
And there you go, this is the true extend of how much destruction this law has caused, far beyond Germany's borders.
I apologise again for the long comment, but I thought it would be a fun bit of knowledge.while these countries importing German goods were financing the German strategy and behaviour.
People don't necessarily want to be dumb. They are made dumb by giving them no time at all to think about anything but "how the fuck am I going to pay my bills?" When you don't have time to think, but a lot of stress, you obviously want to relax. How do you do that? Private TV shit. 🤷
Volker Pispers, after 32 years of satire said, that he's fed up. He'ld quit (and did). After ONE YEAR it was just repetitive. Same shit, different year. He only changed names, parties... That was it. So much for voting changes something. Kurt Tucholsky once said: "If elections changed anything, they'ld be forbidden."

This is one of the few videos by Pispers I diagree with in most parts.
Of course he is true about BILD and their power. And of course media ownership is a thing. But its not comparable to the US yet or other markets where you have highly polarized media. And I indeed find it to be conspirational if you draw an automatic line from the ownership of something to their reports and news - as if there were no editorial staff doing their jobs but writing only what others dictate to them. Many people have those imaginations also about politicians. Or about politicians dictating stuff to the media. No. Thats too easy and even if there might be examples, its no regular case. There are other reasons for uniformity among media, like for instance the similar social background or social status of many journalists of one generation and so on. Between politics and media its always a kind of symbiotic hate relationship, because one needs the other. But working in the fields of politics I can tell that very most politicians have little influence on the media. They are rather fighting to get reported about what they do, so voters might know. How many press conferences and initiatives are there nobody reads about afterwards, because media agents say: not clickworthy. So I think they have the upper hand. And therefore also Pispers introduction here is wrong, claiming those political parties would have the media support them and their single like economic policies. No, they don't have the power for that. On the other hand I also disagree with his polemic words about the parliament's parties being more united in their economic views than the East German dictatorship party. You have to know that Pispers is - speaking about parties - mostly related to the left party die Linke, which is basically the former East German party after two changes of names and one fusion with another. You can see he left that party out in his list. It's true that the left party is partly generally opposed to capitalism. But by far not in majority anymore. And he denies all the differences between the other parties from that extreme perspective. Look at the German government now, set up by Social Democrats, Greens and market liberals. The latter have totally opposing views to the former two and they have been arguing about the budget for weeks now, as the former want to have more public investments and the latter deny this as making debts. Fierce arguments.
What I find especially visible in this video, is why Pispers quit. You hear him say that. He is disappointed with his audience. After decades of shows - and he often stressed that he talks the same stuff again and again, only with other characters or jokes added - nothing has changed politically, in his eyes. I disagree. But I see his goal and compared to this little changed, okay. So rather than a cabaret artist Pispers indeed sees himself like an activist too, wanting to "wake people up". He has become increasingly annoyed that they laugh at his storytelling but then don't follow his own political vote. I understood that afterwards. He became burnt out so to say, resignated. I think also here he overestimated his own power. No doubt he is my favourite cabaret artist and has a sharp tongue, tells many truths and also in a funny way. But he confused this with politics itself. It could not have worked in his sense.

Das Gericht war der Meinung, im Volk sei dieser Spruch schon lange bevor Nuhr ihn benutzt hat, verwendet worden.
Nuhr klaut einen Spruch, gibt den als seinen aus, und verklagt einen anderen, den Spruch, den er selbst geklaut hat, nicht verwenden zu dürfen.

10:07min Really! Merkel is an east German daughter of a priest and got a doctorate in quantum chemistry. On holiday she did hiking. She was one of the least egocentric politicians you could wish for and certainly not interested in becoming wealthy. Although not all Germans agreed with her politics, that's something the vast majority would agree on.
That's why her meeting Trump was always so fun.

The subtitles are not correct. The SED was ruling for 40 years, but it was not the only party in the GDR (East Germany). The word Einheitspartei actually refers to the merger of the Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party in the Soviet sector after WWII.
thing is, this isn't just about germany. germany's Kohl and Schröder (former german chancellors) imported the system almost 1:1 from Margret Thatcher and New Labour to the effect that every main political party has no meaningful disagreements about economics, same as the US with Reagan and Kennedy.

If you like German political satire and (in German: Kaberett) you should also watch "Extra 3" what is similar to "heute show" or "Mitternachtsspitzen" with the great Christoph Sieber or also Tobias Mann..... "Mitternachtsspitzen years ago was with Jürgen Becker and Wilfried Schmickler. They're all great observers....

Well, he shortens a lot of the topics and keeps it very superficial for obvious reasons (full fledged reading with context and details would take hours and would be boring af no mater the punchline), but in general he is right.
You can always learn from the likes of Volker Pispers and Georg Schramm. No matter how old the bits - tragically, some of them actually are as red-hot as they were back then. Too bad, both of them retired. We don't have the same quality with the more recent satirists anymore...

Yes, he is mostly true, but many things are outdated and were outdated when he was active.

"Countries can go bankrupt". No. They cannot. No country can go bankrupt in their own currency. If the may run intho this they go the american way: federal bakn prints more FIAT money. "Issue solved."
A country could go bankrupt if it does not in its own currency. This was one issue of the former GDR but there are also solutions: North Korea does it since >70 years. No trade with outside countries or if trading only in its own money. This is right now a huge problem for them when they sold weapons and munitions to Russia, because now they have much money which they cannot spend.
And such mistakes he did all time, where he said something completely wrong and repeated it and got cited. If you have basic knowledge of the topic you known this.
But aside of these facts he were great.

"german's": Es ist kein Genitiv sondern ein Plural. Der englische Plural lautet daher germans.
Es gibt keine Regel: Wenn der letzte Buchstabe ein "s" ist, kommt ein Auslassungszeichen davor.
Das Auslassungszeichen ist übrigens nicht das von Ihnen verwendete Akzentzeichen sondern das Zeichen auf der Rautetaste oben.

I Met Volker Pispers once, when I listened to loads of his stuff and that is when I learned something about satire. Never take what a satire artist says as part of a performance at face value. While it’s based on reality, it’s not exactly true.
As a German you know these kind of things but when you talk openly about it, you're a "conspiracy theorist".
you can only decide between the choices that are available. theres only sucky parties, so you can only get sucky parties. and the system doesnt allow for this to be changed because of how election campaigning works.
that said, some of the stuff he says here is grasping quite a lot.

I think it’s not that people want to be dumbed down. But they don’t have the time to be a part time journalist. Even if, it would be in vain, one person could never follow all topics to the necessary extent. The media’s “job” in a democracy, is to educate the populace, so the populace can make educated voting decisions. The media seems to not always succeed.

Die privaten Medien, die den Reichen gehören, haben die Aufgabe, die Leute dumm zu halten. Wenn die aufmucken, müssen die Medien die Propaganda der Reichen in die Köpfe der Leute bringen. Ist übrigens exakt das, was die Nazis unter Goebbels gemacht haben.
Volker is a class fighter. In a society where should be no differences in rights, chances and influence on politics he marks up that there are still differences and massive injustices and he's annoyed by the fact that people willingly obey to all the brainwash dished out to them. Basically he talks to a very well informed audience, a thing what we call 'educated citizen'.
Voltaire once said 'find out whom you are not allowed to criticize and then you know who is ruling over you'.
So, when he says thing like that he needs the backing of the public financed media like public german TV and their subsequent legal division, else those in or with power could easily silence him with court orders, court bills and a heck of trouble. And I think he never felt good if he weren't balancing on a razors sharp blade ... to massage the point of pain ... XD
The current minister for economics isn't the first one that was totally inept. We just forgot that Pofalla had this job once... ;)
The most important and also saddest thing about Volker is, he only says the truth… but the people are only laughing about the sadness…

In a way it's a good thing that Pispers retired from public acts. If he would do his routines nowadays he'd probably be called a Querdenker (lit. cross thinker, as in "not aligning with status quo") or whatever names people are called nowadays: "Vaccine-Enemy", "Putin-Comprehender" because he dares to speak out about the established parties. Which of course can only mean he agrees with the "Nazi-Communist opposition". (which he of course denied, but that's not how the public eye works)

Kabarettisten waren immer die echten Querdenker. Daß ein paar Geistesgestörte das Wort gekapert haben, ändert daran nichts. Auch die Nazis haben viele Begriffe geklaut.

Volkers interpretation is outdated. Social media is now the source for "mis"-information.
Springer and Bertelsman lost a lot of their pull.
During the last years they tried desperatly to break into the digital markets, with very limited success.
They were big fish in a small pond but today the pond is an ocean with Scylla(instagramm) & Carybdis(TikTok) dominating the sea of monsters.
And there are still monsters undiscovered in the deep... 😉
Volkers generation learned english in school and never had to use it later because we dubb everthing.
Today this limits your information sources considerably.
The more languages you know the better you can puzzel together different sources on the same topic, the result is a much clearer view.
It is far from perfect but better than parroting everything.
wem gehört gleich nochmal twitch, youtube, tiktok, facebook....? natürlich ein riesiger unterschied ob ami/chinesen selfmade-bonzen oder deutsche erbbonzen den dampfer lenken.... und das beständig 3 cent-anglizismen (zumeist nicht mal von denen selber verstanden) stammelnde hiesige kindergarteninfluencerpack (werbefiguren zu 90 prozent) mit ihren kita-unerhaltungspielchen wird sicherlich aufklärerisch wirken.... auf die ganzen horden handygeschädigten absolut konzentrationsbefreiten kanal-etc-hoppern. die leute früher waren schon verdummt, jetzt sind sie es noch viel mehr (und das wird noch weitaus übler werden). der kern von pispers kritik ist die am kapitalismus - und die bleibt richtig, solange das (im kern) antihumane system besteht (was auch immer eine alternative sein könnte....?!).
Sadly BILD still has a LOT of power in destroying people. Just think about last year the "Heizungsgesetz". They just spread some missinformation an many politicians joined them in destroying Habeck & the Greens (even the FDP, who agreed to the bill many times).
The BILD still reaches a lot of audience. Especially those, who aren't very much into social media. The Springer press still influences people to vote either CDU or - worse - the AfD
@@Anthyrion True, but their readers are dwindeling each year and the monopoly Volker is portraing is a thing of the past.
I won´t say that they have no influence; they are still rich as fuck and money is influence; but the direct and unchallenged hold over the media landscape is brocken.
P.S.: The real problem is that the "easy solution for complicated problem" ads of the AfD are perfect for TikTok and Instagram.

You can make very funny political satire by oversimplifying to the liking of your audience. Pispers does this for the typical middle aged left wing audience. I don’t like political cabaret for this reason (regardless if it’s catering to the left or right): it’s extremely manipulative, unless you consume it for entertainment ONLY.
But public television is at the forefront when it comes to brain melt and porpagada.
