He actually wrote a letter to the public after two years, pointing out that conspiracy theorists spin THAT yarn over and over. 😁
And stating that no, he just was frustrated and well-off after doing it for 30 years.
And nobody else decided to let it rest at mid-sixty but him and his wife....
While US opinion is important in germany? Our media landscape is not as blatantly self-censoring or hoorya-patriotic as the US ones is.
Criticizing, even ridiculing the US is not something people loose careers over here - except in some central, overtly enforced narratives like currently m.e. violence..
Some political spectra even offer careers doing just that.

Nobody does more savage political satire than Germans. Pispers is a legend because everything he says is actually correct. Remember, this video is probably 10 years old when public opinion about the US was better than it is today.
Criticizing politicians is fine, it's a national pastime, just like about anywhere else in the world. By the way cabaret as an art form enjoys special protection from libel laws and the like. In the context of political satire, you can say almost anything. Also see -> Jan Böhmermann's poem about Erdogan (the president of Turkey). That led Germany to abandon a very old libel law from the early 1900s.
I like your openness in this video and that is the best proof that the American people are great people, just like everyone else. Everyone wants peace, prosperity, some sort of equality and then politicians come along and screw things up for everyone - supported by the media (BTW public media and the government in Germany are no better than in the US). Really good video, thanks for keeping an open mind.

About Freedom of Speech/Expression in Gernany.
It would not be allowed to directly go up to someone and say, 'You are stupid,' without a specific reason or cause. That could be considered as insulting and violate the person's dignity.
However, if someone actually does or says something foolish, it is permissible to criticize or comment on that behavior, as long as the criticism is directed towards the action and not the person as a whole.
In the case of public figures, the right to criticize extends further. It is permissible to criticize their actions or statements even more openly, as long as the comments are based on facts and contribute to public discourse.

without this waste of bad politics in the USA, I think it would even be a way stroger super power as it is now. I mean there a lot of things to like about the US, the nature, the music its very multi cultural. Of course there are dark sides too, bad health care (I am german its bad in my opinion), crime, pain killer/drug abuse and a lot more (weird politics) school shootings (i mean compare it to other countries germany for example it rarely ever happens)... its just sad I often wonder how great america could really be with a less power seeking and playing world police like goverment I mean you have like so many pop cultural influences and the few americans I met in person are all pretty cool people it all makes it a lot sadder.. that apparently the country is run by idiots but I have some bad complains about the direction german politics are heading too... Volker is really one of the best in conveying truth/ or fact based opinion (which still can be questioned of course because the absolute truth doesnt exist probably/ too philosophic topic to decode) and mix it well with comedy, the translation is also pretty good on this one

German Freedom of Expression is more like the evolved Freedom of Speech. You are allowed to say everything, as long as you don't insult somebody harshly (with like curse words or stuff like that), as long as you don't tell something about people where you know that it ain't true and it could damage the public image of that person or if you tell something that could damage the public image of somebody and you can't prove that it's right. The fines are just different. Also you are not allowed to tell lies about certain events in history, for example you are not allowed to say that the holocaust didn't happen or stupid stuff like that. Also you are not allowed to tell lies or stuff that isn't proven to be right about certain groups, like religious groups or people of a certain skin color or stuff like that. If you lie about a politican in such a way and it's proven that it makes this persons job harder by you telling that lie it's also illegal. But here's the catch: Insults, lies etc. are so called "Antragsdelikte" so the person that was insulted has to sue the other person. Also there is Freedom of Art, Freedom of Press etc. where you also have certain rights that weigh higher than those rights of people that are in the public eye. In easy words: Don't lie, don't insult, don't tell bad things about somebody that you can't prove, don't talk shit about genocides and you'll be fine. Donald Trump probably would be in jail just for one of his "normal" campaign speeches (seriously, what's normal with that guy? Everybody just voted for Biden because at least he's not Trump). And for good reason.

Its a fair point to think about the US involvement in Ukraine given the past of US foreign policy. But one good reason is simple, US relies economically on a stable Europe and Russia starting conquering European countries is an imminent threat to that stability. There are clear signs that Russia would not stop there if they succeeded, so the USA has skin in the game here too. But of course this is a complex topic, far more difficult than this one aspect. But to say that the US has no business in that conflict is simply not true. And it is especially interesting to see who from the US had business in Ukraine before the war went hot. It was mainly Republican figures like the late John Mc Cain who visited Ukraine troops very early after the Crimean annexation and promised support. It was Bush jnr who decided to deliver more weapons to former soviet states which was seen/played as provocation from Russia. And now it is the Republican party mainly who voices concerns about the involvement of the US in this conflict is simply a rejection of responsibility. You said it yourself just now that you see it like it was Biden who was responsible, but is that so or does this story reach further back and Biden actually does take on that responsibility to honor the promise of support Republicans have made years ago?
Sure there are nuances to what i just said, but it is not as simple as Biden just decided on his own it was a good idea to support a country that is under attack. Hell, it is actually the first honorable move from US foreign politics since a long time. Supporting someone without obvious profits instead of playing Sheriff by invading somewhere like it was a normal thing to do.

I know it is in conflict how you are raised and your education on such topics is bad, but many americans are sooooo deep in this victim mentality. I mean think about it: "Nothing will change, everything will stay that way. We cant do anything."
IF that was true.....why is the world changed in a hundred years so much? Im german and read all about our history. We changed alone 4 times our constitution in 100 years. From Emperor, to flawed democracy, to dictatorship, to our social democracy we have now. People changed, ideas changed, tech changed. Our world is build to evolve. If you want to change something you have all the tools you need in the US, you are the dominant world power and whine about no power.
IF you had balls and your politicans do nothing that benefits the masses - change it. Vote for another party and dont come with that BS their are only 2.
If parties never are threatened in their power position, why should they change anything. democrats and republicians are only fighting for their own positions in their lobbies. They have no ideals or interests other then own interest. Speak with your neighbours, vote for candidates that are trustworthy to change something. Vote for a thrid party. Social media makes it even easier to connect countrywide. My grandgrandgrandparents died for simpler things like social security and got shot by the police for demonstrating. This is much simpler and you need no violence for it - just the balls to stand together for your own interest as a society.
Even if you would only achieve 5% for that party, it would be a shock for the main parties that they are not alone. Here in germany we have very old traditions, that hinder every progress if not new people come in and fix it.
Ignore the media campaigns that will badmouth every candidate other that democrat or republican and you will change very easily the system without a civil war. Ignore the problem and the national unrest will led you all into a systematical collapse, many empires faced in their history.

It depends of the context. Singing or quoting the first Stanza to glorify the Nazi-times is forbidden (Volksverhetzung) - Using the first stanza in movies (WW2 Movies for Example) or other artistic context without glorifying (In case of Art mostly as reminder / critique) is full covered by freedom of expression.
Same missunderstanding with Mein Kampf (The Book from Adolf Hitler) - It is not illegal to own one but the holder of the Copyright (State of Bavaria) decided (until Copyright ended) to not give permission to re-print the book (Therefore no new copies allowed in Germany).
Additional the book was banned for Advertising (What made it hard to know where you can buy or sell one).
After the end of the Copyright the German Book Printing Companies decided (because they know the Sh*tstorm that would start otherwise) to only make commented Copies with explanation and examples of the consequences.
Even before for educational purpose (History, Political Ethics, Psychology,...) using parts of the book in Schools, Universities etc. was legal.
Maybe similar (for the US) would be that using Slavery in Movies / Music / Art is legal but Using Slavery in a Form of Heroism of the Masters and Slavery was/is best and should be introduced again would be illegal (in the US would start riots and hate because it is not criminal - In Germany the department of Justice /State Attorney would try to stop the behaviour before the people start to kill each other)

I mean honestly, Putin could have counteracted Nato politics politically (giving incentives for countries like Ukraine or Moldau to side with him and making it worthwhile to live under Russias influence. Similarly to the EU). His choice for confrontation drove those countries into the arms of Nato because they looked for protection (understandable from the experiences with Soviet government).
The Nato east expansion is in significant parts Russia's own fault. The Nato didn't coerce them to join after all...
And it is Putin who dictates the intensity of the war now, the Western allies are doing just enough to keep a status quo and slowly drain Russia's resources (obviously at the cost of Ukraine). If they chose to go all in conventionally, Russia wouldn't live long. They do more if Russia commits more and they will do less when Russia starts to buckle.
They also need to save resources in order to still pose a threat to China who is closely watching.

04:46 No? You don’t have soldiers in Ukraine 😅 The US are only supplying weapons to the Ukrainian military ;)

As a German: I don't think Pispers point translates well to modern day's war in Ukraine. I am happy that the US (as well as Germany and others) support Ukraine. It's a righteous thing to help them defend their country which is being invaded.
