Afternoon Rush on the Northeast Corridor, July 20, 2001 (1/5)

- 1 of 5. Late afternoon at arguably the best passenger train-watching spot in the country: Harrison, NJ, just across the Passaic River from Newark Penn Station. Shot from the westbound PATH platform.
Summer 2001 shows an Amtrak in transition: new Acela Express trainsets and HHP-8 locos are on the property, and so are the older E60s. The workhorse AEM-7s and Amfleets abound in three different paint schemes.
Most of the action here is New Jersey Transit commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, and Raritan Valley lines (with a few other surprises). This was a few years before the ALP-46s and Comet Vs began arriving; you'll see mostly solid sets of Comet IIs (and their frequent tag-alongs, the Arrow I-rebuild IBs), IIIs and IVs hauled by ALP-44 electrics and F40PH-2CAT diesels, along with a healthy dose of Arrow III MUs.
And R.I.P. HHP-8s and AEM-7s😭😭😭😭 You will be never forgotten.
That summer marked the midpoint of my high school years, and I took the Raritan Valley line and then PATH to school most days. Seeing those pre-overhaul Comet IIs, I can still see the orange-and-brown seats, the carpeted aisles, and the woodgrain wall panels. I always took the mismatched sets of Comet II's and IBs we got on the RVL to mean we were unloved compared to the other two lines of the Newark division, which got full sets of either Comet IIIs or IVs for their push-pull trains, and of course had the Arrow IIIs that I was so jealous of. I know everybody (except me) hates them now but having grown up along a diesel-only line they were very impressive to me when I was a kid.
I had just graduated from college. I grew up along the NEC, so the roar of the RVL diesels was the novelty for me, compared to the usual parade of Arrows and AEM-7s. It was, I'll admit, always a treat when one of those Comet III or IV trainsets showed up inbound from Edison, but the Arrows were (and are) my favorite, too!
Awesome 😎
Great video! BTW I like how the engineer of train 5707 had his arm hanging out the window lol
A blast from the past. Definitely nostalgia for me. I wish NJT would bring back the older trains from yesteryear. :(
By the way you can still see Amtrak trains in phases II-IV paints in 2004
i was on 1491 arrow 3 train 430 to gladstone 2 weeks ago
This was filmed on the day I was born...

thecooltrainguy Please read the video description; in 2001 those didn't exist yet.
You're right, I just saw they started running in between 2002 and 2004. I thought they started running somewhere in 2001.
