I've done this trick many many times in public and it's all about the hands, he draws a triangle, and then he draws a circle with his fingers and your subconscious mind picks up on the hand gestures because he triggers your subconscious mind to follow his fingers when he says to imagine a square as he draws it out for you. I love this show so so much.

You are missing a lot, it's equally important to eliminate rectangle and square from the possible shape pool, I mean how many basic shapes are there? Jane drew a "screen" then verbally use square as an example just for that, another goal of drawing the screen is to get the mark less suspicious about his hand movements, so the later suggestions are taken in unchallanged

He uses his hands to form a triangle then makes a circle with his hands. That's the key to doing it.

simple mind guidance trick- two principles it works on: First of all- the most popular shapes are a triangle, square and circle. secondly, human nature is to try and outsmart the game- human nature will try and guess what the mentalist isn't thinking- that makes us predictable. All it takes now it to imply or project what the you as the magician is thinking, subliminally.
ok, he says " a shape like a square but not a square"- eliminating a square, then to be safe, he draws a rectangle with his hands- people will then avoid that shape subconsciously thinking- 'oh he's thinking that shape'. that leaves a triangle - as most peoples first choice, as people will automatically think of a similarly angled shape- (but not a square) he clearly guides you to a triangle.
Once the first suggestion is made ,and the person is thinking something, its much easier to now throw obvious suggestion. He say 'now project another shape'- he feintly suggests a circle with his hands, then says the words - put it "a-ROUND" the other shape- what else- a circle! (he also uses a lot of round sounding words here to hammer it home)
when he says - 'heres the fun part'- thats all just showmanship crap to distract from the work he s already done on us- and to allow the ideas to consolidate.
Basically the mind goes- "avoid his first suggestion, I'm outsmarting him, i think I'm making this second choice"- (but actually he s guided it- making us think we re choosing). The trick is to keep things moving and fluid so the player dosent have time to go to a third choice.
very simple mind tricks , but that can be made complex to really fuck with people- literally.

This is really an amazing trick!!!!!! And this is how he did it (atleast to me)......
First he drew a rectangle with his hands. At that time he made us think that he is trying to make us think rectangle. So we eliminated it and thought of a triangle. Why a triangle ?? Check his hand position exactly after doing the rectangle with his hands from 0:24. He positions his hands more often in the shape of a triangle which subconsciously makes us think of the triangle. Then he did the shape of a circle at 0:32 in a way with hands which makes us think of circle. In the beginning we were busy fighting not to imagine what his hands did when he showed the shape of the rectangle. Once he said it need not be a rectangle, we dropped the shield and started to think exactly what his hands did... A best example how fake psychics trick us to believe that they are reading our mind but what they truly do is make us think what they want us to think...
