I watched this video 7 years ago when it first came out and now I finally have a little girl to sew them for. Miranda should be in all of your videos I love having two different ways to sew a project
I never really enjoyed sewing until I took a knit fabric course. Went out and bought an overlocker and tons of stretch fabric and never looked back. Was even making and selling gym wear for awhile there. I love that sewing can be quick and easy as back when I learned it was all about making business suits and other ridiculously time consuming items ... snore. They said that you have to learn all the basics before you can take shortcuts. Boy were they wrong! How many young moms have time for zipper flies, cuffs and pleats?! I loved whipping up an outfit for a napping child in the morning and watching them run around in it in the afternoon :). I love your videos, so well done.
So true! I have a overlocker and a sewing machine and 90% of the time I do stretch-fabrics. Pants and Shirts are made in no time and with a overlocker it looks really professional!
Another idea is to get a bunch of wrapping paper really cheap after Christmas cause they're on sail and use the wrapping paper to make you're patterns!! U can cut however much u want of paper for your pattern and sometimes it has lines for cutting which could help cut strait! 😃👍🏻
I think every girl and woman deserves a sewing machine. if someone doesn't have a sewing machine I bet you if they did they would enjoy using very much. it is so much fun to create something . you feel so acomplished and proud. it's awesome
So this was my first project today!! :D so the pants came out screwed up because on of the legs were inside out when I was done lol but it was only for practice since this was my first time sewing, and I must say if I didn't mess that up they would have been pretty nice. So I'm very proud of myself!! Thank you for the video ladies!
Thankyou for these videos. Following you now for 7 yrs. I recycled a lot of tshirts for my son when he was a toddler and made them into pants. Now doing his pajama pants. You made me fall in love with sewing with such wonderful hacks and techniques thankyou so much Dana.
This tutorial is AMAZING. I have never (I mean EVER) made clothing until this summer. I am just now getting familiar with a sewing machine. My first project was a pillow case dress and it went very well so I got brave and tried my hand at leggings. They turned out FANTASTIC, fit well and look even better. It was super easy to follow and I appreciate the tutorial!
I made diagrams of this lesson with instructions. You have totally demystified how to make pants with this leggings tutorial. I am now confident making leggings and pants using both my sewing machine and my serger. Also, thanks for extra bonus of sharing two ways of making the pattern. Ladies, I applaud both of you!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I was so impressed with the tutorial on leggings. The two of you are very informative. There wasn't a boring moment. I have retired & returned to sewing so I needed an update on newer methods. What great ideas. Thanks
Finally someone who has a friend that adds value to a RUclips video...too many videos out there that have ‘best friend guests’ who add nothing to the content. Good job ladies.
I love how clear the pictures and instructions are in your videos. Whoever does the set-up & camera shooting is doing a fantastic job! These are some of the clearest tutorials on youtube, in my opinion, which is so important when it comes to sewing. I especially appreciate that you show the actual sewing on the machine up close. Keep up the good work!
Oh boy, do I need serger videos. I have had one here since November and finally made the 4 thread overlock so scared to change anything. Now I want a new one that threads itself and sets its own settings. Thanks, love all your videos and I'm sure the Serger ones will be wonderful. I made so many simple skirts for little girls. They were a hit. Thanks. Jan in TN
I put off sewing for years because I didnt know where to begin but thanks to you and your videos, IT DOESNT LOOK SO SCARY!! Thank you so much for your videos, they've helped me so much and have taught me a whole bunch! I LOVE your channel! Thank youuuu!!!
My favorite tip is to use brown paper bags to make a pattern! I also love the idea of using a pair of pants that have a hole or stain as a pattern. Sewing is not cheap so these are great ways to save some $$$.
Just made these this morning and on my first attempt I accidentally sewed the waist line together so there was no opening lol! Managed to try again and was perfect second time round. I love your tutorials! Thank you :-)
Thank you for this great video! I enjoyed it. I've made both leggings with the elastic waist band and the yoga waist band. One thing that I noted is that at 5:58, the half of 19inch is 9.5inch, instead if 8.5inch. Nonetheless, it's a great, easy-to-follow video tutorial! Love it!
Our local newspaper sells roll-ends of newsprint. These are cut to different lengths and work great to trace out patterns and as table covers for messy crafts.
Loved your tutorial but i wish you could have included a close up shots of 1. the overlock stitch on the regular machine and 2. the hem you created on the serger.
Thanks so much for your videos! I just made two pair of leggings for my daughter in laws sister, she just had twin boys, and I'm getting ready to make a pair for my one year old Granddaughter. They were so easy! I was scared to work with stretchy fabric until I watched this tutorial, now I feel like a pro. ;-)
Best legging tutorial ever!!! OMG love these! I just got a serger and this was my first project. They came together so easy and they look so cute on my baby!
Great idea! I loved this video and went to the store and bought fabric and made a pair of leggins in an hour! Wearing them to Pilates next. Thanks so much I am a fan!
Just stumbled across your tutorial, in my search for an easy to follow baby leggings and I must say it's the best one, so I will be giving it a try both ways. Thank you x
i should have checked to see if you had any baby legging tuts first! I have used you for tote bags and zip bags, but went searching all over for legging tuts without a serger, uugggg.... not good ones until yours popped up! duh! I should just always check to see if you have a tutorial first from now on! Perfect! I think i got it! Love your tutorials! Thank you!
I know right?! I've been procrastinating trying to learn anything on my machine and have been searching for a channel that makes everything so simple and to the point! time to get sewing!! :)
You girls are having a lot of fun that's nice to see. When you said a sewing machine I didn't realize you were going to use a baby lock, I was drooling LOL. Great job
Made the tights on the sewing machine but using Maranda's pattern. Used my hubbies old faded tshirt, so it was a good piece to practice on. We'll see how my 5 year old will judge the project today :-) Enjoyed this video and was so excited to sew. It's been 12 years since I've attempted to sew anything and coming across your video channel gave me hope that it was possible to sew and have fun again! Thanks for your great videos! Toma
I watched this a few days ago and then tried to make these from memory. I messed up some but one of the messups worked pretty well. I ended up with side seams and put pockets in them. Thanks for the pocket video too. My little girls liked them a lot. I used my old t-shirts for trying it out. Thank you so much for the clear directions. I will make them again now that I watched your tutorial again. My girls only wear leggings due to their preference. Thank you again.
i just thought of the ultimate money saver. make baby leggings out of old shirts that ive sewn myself in the past, that i dont wear anymore xD its a project from a project!
Cant believe I never thought of this! Especially the part where you don't have to hem!!! I HATE hemming :) Thank you for this. Wow... All of these old shirts I have will now have a purpose.
Thank you so much for this amazing video. I still a beginner when it comes down to sewing on a machine. I'm trying to start myself off slow and this video was a wonderful start.
Great video! I am a new subbie on your channel and I am loving your clothes sewing tutorials. Being an interior designer, my sewing consists of soft furnishings for the home, but it has always been a desire of mine to know how to sew clothes. Yeah, I am excited that I found your channel! Thanks for sharing!
Love watching n learning from you ladies! Just got myself a serger too for bday!! Gonna start making clothes for myself n my granddaughter who is 2yrs old!! Wish me luck. Hehehe
I’m thinking about making my daughter clothes I’ve watched other videos but you guys method makes it look easier then others I’m going to try this way thank you lady’s
Thank you for the video. Love the serger tips. Keeping the fabric above the needle while doing the Hem is the best. It will help me a lot in sewing hats and bags. Love the idea of a hem done with a serger. Thanks again for all your effort.
Your machine is sooooooo quiet!! Mine is so old lol I believe it might have been Mary's(Jesus's mother) machine lol! It sounds like a machine gun but it work great!! Love your tutorial!! Can't wait to make my sons some fleece pj bottoms!! Thank u!
Hi Dana, I love all your tutorials especially regarding baby stuff! I can finally make baby leggings on my own and they're super cute! please make more tutorials on sewing baby stuff like dresses. love u!
I really enjoy your tutorials they are easy to follow being in my late 60,s I thought I would never do it but I am wizzing along now making lots of clothes for my great granddaughter s thank you
Just stumbled upon or channel and have found it so helpful! I've been wanting to make my kids their own clothes but I haven't sewn in years. Thank you for all the useful information!
I wanted to make a baseball style t-shirt for my girls. With the sleeves being orange and the body being blue. I couldn't find any orange knit material for the sleeves--so I went to Hobby Lobby, bought an adult size orange t-shirt and cut the sleeves from that!!
You can find great T-shirts in thrift stores to make leggings, undies, and camisoles. Even babies' receiving blankets in knit fabric can be used to make cute garments and matching accessories like scrunchies and hairbands!
great tutorial your videos are spot on with taking it step by step and look so easy! ive recently gotten a sewing machine and have been so terrified of trying to sew anything other than a scarf but after watching your videos im ready to finally get going!! but on a side note I HAVE to say that your hair is gorgeous! the color is beautiful!
I don't have any little ones but I have a 1 yr old grandson and 3 grandsons 6,6,and 8. I made them all camo newsboys hats from Whitney Sews and now they think I can make anything so thanks for all the ideas.
Hooray! I'm so happy you used both the serger and sewing machine for these :). I'm going to make a ton of these for my girls -- and maybe, someday, some for myself!
The KNIFE gets turned off when hemming the pants on the serger. Please add a text blurb during video so folks don't lop off the leg too short and have to re-do it (or make capris). They may not have extra fabric lying around like Miranda did when she cut the waist band in half cutting out the pattern. ;)
Joanna Allali I have a tote bag video....which you could add some pockets to on the inside and use as a diaper bag: ruclips.net/video/-OCRclg0hpU/видео.html
im confused. she said she wanted 19 inches for the waistband, then cuts 8 1/2... which makes it 17 inches, not 19. should she have cut 9 and a half inches to get 19?
Tazeen Firdous no i know that. My question was did she intentionally cut it even shorter than she said she was going to, or was her math off, or did she just misspeak. Her daughter had a 20 inch waist. Then she said she needs it an INCH smaller to hug the waist, So she said she wanted 19 inches for the waist. (which when you fold it, your measurement should be 9 and a half inches to get 19 inches) When she actually cut it, she said 8 and a half. Which would make the measurement 17 inches, NOT 19. Im wondering if this was intentional or if she accidentally mispoke and said 8 and a half when she meant to say 9 and a half. Or maybe her math was just off. All i know is, what she was saying didnt add up. I know she wanted the waist smaller but she ended uo making it 2 inches smaller than what she said she wanted. Instead of one inch smaller than the pants waist,(19 inch waistband and a 20 inch waist) she ended up cutting it 3 inches smaller by making it 17 inches for a 20 inch waist. I understand why theyre doing it, im just not understanding why she changed it or if it was an accident or miscalculation on her part lol
Katherine Sillaman Also when she cut the band she had two pieces. My thought was she must be putting a seam on each side. But when she discribe sewing the band in a tube she only had the one piece of fabric resulting in one side seam.
Hi. Thank you for a very instructive video! However I wish you would not advertising buying cheap t-shirts to make new clothes. Think about how little the work of the person making that t-shirt is valued if we can just buy a finished garment to get cheap material. Fast fashion industry at its worst, and we as makers know that making these things actually are worth more than they cost.
Yes! For children's leggings, you can easily find large-enough remnants in the bargain bin at fabric stores. Another idea is to use old or damaged t-shirts! I just finished making a camisole out of a nice new-ish t-shirt that got a hole in the sleeve during the wash. (Ugh, front-loaders and fast fashion are NOT compatible. Would love to see both banished from the Earth.)
I really liked this video but have to agree on the idea of buying a garment just to cut it up, especially a larger sized garment because us larger people have a hard enough time finding something nice. Also, and more important, I agree that it devalues the work of the person who made the original piece. I used to make little drop waist dresses for my daughter out of my old tee shirts and she loved them. Now I'm about to start making things for my granddaughters out of old garments.
@@naposletkunaposletku5836 Excuse me but at what particular point did I say I was offended??? It's an opinion. It just seems a little harsh to destroy a brand new item when you can buy cheap remnants or recycle old clothes is all I'm saying, the same as the other two posts. How come you didn't pick on them?
She probably wanted to say thrift store or old shirt, but maybe was afraid to say either because people can be picky about what they put on their babies. I used lots of old clothes and thrift clothes while learning to sew, and she definitely aims to help beginners, so maybe that’s also why. Fabric is expensive, and sadly, lots of times, it’s cheaper to buy the finished product.
Great instructions, but what I don't get is why you would say that two-year-old is a size. My daughter grew a lot while being a two-year-old and was already wearing clothes marked "3 years" when she turned two. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine. Some kids are tall and some are short. It starts way early.
because 2T is a size, and her kid probably fits in 2T (many clothes can be matked as 2 years, 24MO OR 2T. they mean the same thing). if you know that your kid doesnt fit in 2T, then you obviously wouldnt make 2T leggings for them. but for the most part, 2 year olds tend to fit in 2T, so if she wa ted to make a pair for someone she KNOWS wears 2T , Shed look for the 2T/2Y/24Mo pattern. does that make sense? i think youre just being a tad over sensitive and reading too much into it
+Katherine Sillaman I just think it's hard when mpst clothes here in Sweden is marked for example 94, wich is for 94cm long children and so on (my 3 year old wears 100-104 clothes now) and then suddenly you get clothes marked "3 years" and you have no idea if they will fit.
Ahaha i understand. Its because here in americab our sizes are marked by "age" for babies and toddlers, and then those sizes cover a specific range of height/age. Does that make a little more sense? Like for an example, here in the U.S, newborn size is called newborn, and it can fit babies whos weight ranges between 5ibs-10ibs and of course a range of heights from the newborns range. Our sizing system is very screwy, because not only do they do it like that, but EVERY clothing company has a different range system for their sizing, so a newborn in one company could be 5-10ibs and the other company it could be 5-7ibs. Its like this with all clothing, bur once you get to childrens and adults, it goes by measurements, but the sizes are just numbers (00, 0, 1, 2, 3 etc... ) Its usually a trial and error to fond what fits or sometimes theyll say it on the tag for childrens clothes what height and weight corresponds to this size.
I just got a new sewing machine from my mother in law for an early Christmas present. I'm so excited to use it. I haven't used a sewing machine since my 6th grade home ed class
Thank you for posting a serger tutorial!!! Everything on RUclips for threading a serger - there is nothing for actually using one! Which is crazy to me - a new serger is very intimidating! Would LOVE more serger tutorials!!
MADE Everyday Yes!! And what stitches to use and all. I am looking to buy a serger and don't know if I need a coverstitch to sew with knits! Or of I can get by without one! The machines that have one are more and I definitely don't want to buy a separate machine ha :) Love love your blog and videos! Been following since my first daughter was born 5 years ago and the videos are a great addition!!
When something has to match precisely, like the hem on the first leggings, I'm more successful if I start with the end that has to match up. Great video. Very helpful.
I watched this video 7 years ago when it first came out and now I finally have a little girl to sew them for. Miranda should be in all of your videos I love having two different ways to sew a project
Haha. Yes! She's awesome! You're right, it is fun to show two different perspectives. I should have guests on more often! Thanks Klaire! - Dana

I LOVE the way you sew the pants and the way you explain things so well
Loved your tutorial but i wish you could have included a close up shots of 1. the overlock stitch on the regular machine and 2. the hem you created on the serger.
I agree with the close ups. For beginners, the more pictures we can see the better. But still great videos!!
Yes! I'm really curious what the hem looked like
More close ups
I agree!

What did you do to make sure the baby leggings stay up.. as there was no elastic added and once crawling around they will be down in no time lol??
Jacqui Rowe I agree! I would have used that band as a casing, or made it even tighter/smaller and gathered the top of the pants before sewing it on.

I really want to see how she made those leggings with the leather sections. Super cute.
Me too.
chevon1920 IKR! Me too
I dont think she made those, but ya super cute :)
Pets & Crafts She did. All of the leggings were homemade.

perfect ! Im profesional dressmaker but still learning a lot from you both. Thank you girls !
Great tutorial 😘 im gonna make a pair for a doll, its good pratice 😂
What a great way to hem with the serger. I will be trying that for the next set of pants that I sew.
loved it the way you present.............
So clever! And you both make it look so easy. I love how resourceful you are, and your ingenious shortcuts. Inspiring!
Do you know how to sew pants with zipper fly?
How about shirts with a collar, cuff, and button holes?
Thanks
great tutorial your videos are spot on with taking it step by step and look so easy! ive recently gotten a sewing machine and have been so terrified of trying to sew anything other than a scarf but after watching your videos im ready to finally get going!! but on a side note I HAVE to say that your hair is gorgeous! the color is beautiful!
Please, more Miranda in your videos )))
VB-world 丶
I don't have any little ones but I have a 1 yr old grandson and 3 grandsons 6,6,and 8. I made them all camo newsboys hats from Whitney Sews and now they think I can make anything so thanks for all the ideas.
Where did you get the baby lock sewing machine
They may not have extra fabric lying around like Miranda did when she cut the waist band in half cutting out the pattern. ;)
omg i made a mistake and clicked on your channel and im so happy i did🤗 i sew love you girl you rock😉
love your videos can you please make a video on baby bags please!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joanna Allali I have a tote bag video....which you could add some pockets to on the inside and use as a diaper bag: ruclips.net/video/-OCRclg0hpU/видео.html
so your saying that i could just add pockets
MADE Everyday

Just got my first Babylock machine! Inspired by you! Thank you. You so great 🥳
when dana cut that tshirt it sounded SO SATISFYING
I just made my first pair of leggings - up to 3 months old! I used a £2 man's XL t-shirt. Thank you for this tutorial.
Awesome yay! Have fun making more pairs 🥰 -Dana
im confused. she said she wanted 19 inches for the waistband, then cuts 8 1/2... which makes it 17 inches, not 19. should she have cut 9 and a half inches to get 19?
Katherine Sillaman cz she is not using any elastic she wants the waistband to be a snugg fit, i thnk she said that 😟
Tazeen Firdous no i know that. My question was did she intentionally cut it even shorter than she said she was going to, or was her math off, or did she just misspeak. Her daughter had a 20 inch waist. Then she said she needs it an INCH smaller to hug the waist, So she said she wanted 19 inches for the waist. (which when you fold it, your measurement should be 9 and a half inches to get 19 inches)
When she actually cut it, she said 8 and a half.
Katherine Sillaman looool mayb she accidentally mispoke 😕
Katherine Sillaman Also when she cut the band she had two pieces. My thought was she must be putting a seam on each side. But when she discribe sewing the band in a tube she only had the one piece of fabric resulting in one side seam.
Geraldine Lombardo her piece was folded
You two are so adorable( no offense I know you’re full adults but you all are just so cute doing this tutorial) thanks for helping me
81/2 + 81/2 = 17 not 19 should be 91/2
I think she chose a smaller diameter because she wants them to be a little tighter on the waist. That, or she screwed the math up ;)
13:52, there's your answer. It's on purpose so that the waistband acts as an elastic.
@@julianvidal7361 I think the math is wrong. She wanted the fabric to be 19 inches because the waist was 20 inches.
Excellent tutorial! I have been sewing all my life and still learning!
Now I'm about to start making things for my granddaughters out of old garments.
ciaphas100 seriously you are getting offended because of this?
Thank you for this tutorial. I made my first pair of leggings today and loved how easy you made it look. I feel so accomplished!!!
Yay, congratulations! I love making leggings - so satisfying. Have fun, Jessica 😊
Well, I guess it is a system at least. You can pray you get the metric system over there some day... ;)
+Johanna “Vidde” Julén i wish! lol
I did it! My first ever sewing project. Thank you so much!
i wanna have my own childrens clothing line
Dana, you make the best tutorials. Thank you! Sewing some leggings for my baby daughter and for myself has been on my to-do list.
Lydia J Awesome! Thanks Lydia. That's really nice to hear :) - Dana
I just got a new sewing machine from my mother in law for an early Christmas present. I'm so excited to use it. I haven't used a sewing machine since my 6th grade home ed class
I’ve just made my first pair of leggings for myself using your method for the serger. Turned out really well. Thank you so much.
U know . How to creat this legging pattren ??
The girls are just beautiful. So cute. Great easy way to make leggings. I don't have girls but my friends do and lots of baby gifts needed. Thank you.
Thank you for making me be able to sew! Your tutorials are easy to follow and my baby looks so cute.
This is a great tutorial . Made a pair of workout yoga leggings in an hour out of scrap fabric. Very pleased with the results.
Thank you for your tutorials. They're easy and very explanatory. Please make us a tutorial for a little girl's dress. Thank you
Thank you for posting a serger tutorial!!! Everything on RUclips for threading a serger - there is nothing for actually using one! Which is crazy to me - a new serger is very intimidating! Would LOVE more serger tutorials!!
Crystal DeRosia I guess I should do more serger videos :) Thanks Crystal! - Dana
Over Lockers are the best!! They make life so easy.....
Thanks ladies from a sewer in the uk
My Sunday project and it worked !!!
When something has to match precisely, like the hem on the first leggings, I'm more successful if I start with the end that has to match up. Great video. Very helpful.
This was seriously so seamlessly executed! No pun intended 😂
Hahah. Thanks! :) Dana
I like the way you show the options side by side.
