How to Sew a Pair of Leggings, two ways---for any age!

- Leggings are cute, comfy, and work for any age---from babies up to adults! Plus they're super easy to make. I mean, like 4 steps easy. My friend Miranda (from www.onelittlemi... ) and I will show you two ways to make them---on a standard Baby Lock sewing machine, and on a Baby Lock serger. We'll even show you how to make your own pattern, so you can make these again and again and again. Cause I know you will! Come sew with us....

I never really enjoyed sewing until I took a knit fabric course. Went out and bought an overlocker and tons of stretch fabric and never looked back. Was even making and selling gym wear for awhile there. I love that sewing can be quick and easy as back when I learned it was all about making business suits and other ridiculously time consuming items ... snore. They said that you have to learn all the basics before you can take shortcuts. Boy were they wrong! How many young moms have time for zipper flies, cuffs and pleats?! I loved whipping up an outfit for a napping child in the morning and watching them run around in it in the afternoon :).

So true! I have a overlocker and a sewing machine and 90% of the time I do stretch-fabrics. Pants and Shirts are made in no time and with a overlocker it looks really professional!

So this was my first project today!! :D so the pants came out screwed up because on of the legs were inside out when I was done lol but it was only for practice since this was my first time sewing, and I must say if I didn't mess that up they would have been pretty nice. This tutorial is AMAZING. I have never (I mean EVER) made clothing until this summer. I am just now getting familiar with a sewing machine. My first project was a pillow case dress and it went very well so I got brave and tried my hand at leggings. They turned out FANTASTIC, fit well and look even better. It was super easy to follow and I appreciate the tutorial!
I think every girl and woman deserves a sewing machine. if someone doesn't have a sewing machine I bet you if they did they would enjoy using very much. it is so much fun to create something . you feel so acomplished and proud. it's awesome

Another idea is to get a bunch of wrapping paper really cheap after Christmas cause they're on sail and use the wrapping paper to make you're patterns!! U can cut however much u want of paper for your pattern and sometimes it has lines for cutting which could help cut strait! 😃👍🏻

Thankyou for these videos. Following you now for 7 yrs. I recycled a lot of tshirts for my son when he was a toddler and made them into pants. Now doing his pajama pants. You made me fall in love with sewing with such wonderful hacks and techniques thankyou so much Dana.
Thank you for this great video! I enjoyed it. I've made both leggings with the elastic waist band and the yoga waist band. One thing that I noted is that at 5:58, the half of 19inch is 9.5inch, instead if 8.5inch. Nonetheless, it's a great, easy-to-follow video tutorial! Love it!

My favorite tip is to use brown paper bags to make a pattern! I also love the idea of using a pair of pants that have a hole or stain as a pattern. Sewing is not cheap so these are great ways to save some $$$.

What did you do to make sure the baby leggings stay up.. as there was no elastic added and once crawling around they will be down in no time lol??
Jacqui Rowe I agree! I would have used that band as a casing, or made it even tighter/smaller and gathered the top of the pants before sewing it on.

Our local newspaper sells roll-ends of newsprint. These are cut to different lengths and work great to trace out patterns and as table covers for messy crafts.
My dad worked at a paper for nearly forty years, I loved getting the end rolls to play with!

Loved your tutorial but i wish you could have included a close up shots of 1. the overlock stitch on the regular machine and 2. the hem you created on the serger.

Made the tights on the sewing machine but using Maranda's pattern. Used my hubbies old faded tshirt, so it was a good piece to practice on. We'll see how my 5 year old will judge the project today :-) Enjoyed this video and was so excited to sew. I have used you for tote bags and zip bags, but went searching all over for legging tuts without a serger, uugggg.... not good ones until yours popped up! duh! I wanted to make a baseball style t-shirt for my girls. With the sleeves being orange and the body being blue. I couldn't find any orange knit material for the sleeves--so I went to Hobby Lobby, bought an adult size orange t-shirt and cut the sleeves from that!!

You can find great T-shirts in thrift stores to make leggings, undies, and camisoles. Even babies' receiving blankets in knit fabric can be used to make cute garments and matching accessories like scrunchies and hairbands!

im confused. she said she wanted 19 inches for the waistband, then cuts 8 1/2... which makes it 17 inches, not 19. should she have cut 9 and a half inches to get 19?

Tazeen Firdous no i know that. My question was did she intentionally cut it even shorter than she said she was going to, or was her math off, or did she just misspeak. Her daughter had a 20 inch waist. Then she said she needs it an INCH smaller to hug the waist, So she said she wanted 19 inches for the waist. (which when you fold it, your measurement should be 9 and a half inches to get 19 inches)
When she actually cut it, she said 8 and a half. Which would make the measurement 17 inches, NOT 19. Im wondering if this was intentional or if she accidentally mispoke and said 8 and a half when she meant to say 9 and a half. Or maybe her math was just off. All i know is, what she was saying didnt add up. I know she wanted the waist smaller but she ended uo making it 2 inches smaller than what she said she wanted. Instead of one inch smaller than the pants waist,(19 inch waistband and a 20 inch waist) she ended up cutting it 3 inches smaller by making it 17 inches for a 20 inch waist. I understand why theyre doing it, im just not understanding why she changed it or if it was an accident or miscalculation on her part lol

Katherine Sillaman Also when she cut the band she had two pieces. My thought was she must be putting a seam on each side. But when she discribe sewing the band in a tube she only had the one piece of fabric resulting in one side seam.

The KNIFE gets turned off when hemming the pants on the serger. Please add a text blurb during video so folks don't lop off the leg too short and have to re-do it (or make capris). They may not have extra fabric lying around like Miranda did when she cut the waist band in half cutting out the pattern. ;)

I think she chose a smaller diameter because she wants them to be a little tighter on the waist. That, or she screwed the math up ;)
13:52, there's your answer. It's on purpose so that the waistband acts as an elastic.

I don't have any little ones but I have a 1 yr old grandson and 3 grandsons 6,6,and 8. I made them all camo newsboys hats from Whitney Sews and now they think I can make anything so thanks for all the ideas.
I watched this a few days ago and then tried to make these from memory. I messed up some but one of the messups worked pretty well. I ended up with side seams and put pockets in them. Thanks for the pocket video too. My little girls liked them a lot. I used my old t-shirts for trying it out. Thank you so much for the clear directions. I will make them again now that I watched your tutorial again. My girls only wear leggings due to their preference. Thank you again.

Great instructions, but what I don't get is why you would say that two-year-old is a size. My daughter grew a lot while being a two-year-old and was already wearing clothes marked "3 years" when she turned two. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine. Some kids are tall and some are short. It starts way early.
because 2T is a size, and her kid probably fits in 2T (many clothes can be matked as 2 years, 24MO OR 2T. they mean the same thing). if you know that your kid doesnt fit in 2T, then you obviously wouldnt make 2T leggings for them. but for the most part, 2 year olds tend to fit in 2T, so if she wa ted to make a pair for someone she KNOWS wears 2T , Shed look for the 2T/2Y/24Mo pattern. does that make sense?

+Katherine Sillaman I just think it's hard when mpst clothes here in Sweden is marked for example 94, wich is for 94cm long children and so on (my 3 year old wears 100-104 clothes now) and then suddenly you get clothes marked "3 years" and you have no idea if they will fit.
Ahaha i understand. Its because here in americab our sizes are marked by "age" for babies and toddlers, and then those sizes cover a specific range of height/age. Does that make a little more sense? Like for an example, here in the U.S, newborn size is called newborn, and it can fit babies whos weight ranges between 5ibs-10ibs and of course a range of heights from the newborns range. Our sizing system is very screwy, because not only do they do it like that, but EVERY clothing company has a different range system for their sizing, so a newborn in one company could be 5-10ibs and the other company it could be 5-7ibs. Its like this with all clothing, bur once you get to childrens and adults, it goes by measurements, but the sizes are just numbers (00, 0, 1, 2, 3 etc... ) Its usually a trial and error to fond what fits or sometimes theyll say it on the tag for childrens clothes what height and weight corresponds to this size.
Well, I guess it is a system at least. You can pray you get the metric system over there some day... ;)

Hi. Thank you for a very instructive video! However I wish you would not advertising buying cheap t-shirts to make new clothes. Think about how little the work of the person making that t-shirt is valued if we can just buy a finished garment to get cheap material. Fast fashion industry at its worst, and we as makers know that making these things actually are worth more than they cost.
Yes! For children's leggings, you can easily find large-enough remnants in the bargain bin at fabric stores. Another idea is to use old or damaged t-shirts! I just finished making a camisole out of a nice new-ish t-shirt that got a hole in the sleeve during the wash.
(Ugh, front-loaders and fast fashion are NOT compatible. Would love to see both banished from the Earth.)
I really liked this video but have to agree on the idea of buying a garment just to cut it up, especially a larger sized garment because us larger people have a hard enough time finding something nice. Also, and more important, I agree that it devalues the work of the person who made the original piece. I used to make little drop waist dresses for my daughter out of my old tee shirts and she loved them. Now I'm about to start making things for my granddaughters out of old garments.

It just seems a little harsh to destroy a brand new item when you can buy cheap remnants or recycle old clothes is all I'm saying, the same as the other two posts. How come you didn't pick on them?
She probably wanted to say thrift store or old shirt, but maybe was afraid to say either because people can be picky about what they put on their babies. I used lots of old clothes and thrift clothes while learning to sew, and she definitely aims to help beginners, so maybe that’s also why. Fabric is expensive, and sadly, lots of times, it’s cheaper to buy the finished product.
