    I want to thank you for your upbeat personality and clarity in teaching sewing. I had a brain injury after a lung transplant so I have had to relearn many many things again, and still, many things don’t stay in my brain. Please pat yourself on the back because anyone that can explain things to a person with a brain injury, and be as inviting as you are, deserves milk and cookies for life! True, there are times I want to smack the back of your head- in a loving way- because you make it look so easy and mine is always a little more wonky! But a lot of that is my brain dropping information and not only sew the wrong sides together once and have to rip it out, but sometimes I do it two or three times! We call it the new comedy act! Thank you for what you do! It makes a difference in this persons life.

    I'm an old quilter, and I'm so glad you encouraged a new quilter to sew their binding on by hand! That was very refreshing. You did a great tutorial for a new quilter. They need to learn by watching the step by step process so they won't tend to skip very important steps in a rush to get their quilt finished. In quilting something to be proud of, it can take time. So many try and break a speed record to get them done. Each quilt is a journey, and you should enjoy each journey. ❤ Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

      @@tolvidoati Yea. That's a good question. I haven't tried making one without the batting in the middle....so you would have to see how that works, or maybe just do a thin layer of something else in place of the batting? The bed sheet idea was for the backing fabric, since they provide a nice large cut of fabric. But try it out and see what happens! - Dana

    • @susanlance8179

      @@MADEEveryday For a summer quilt you can use a flannel sheet instead of batting. You still need to do all the quilting because until the quilt is quilted it is very fragile. It would just fall apart in a washer. Also you might want to shrink your binding to 2 inches because it is less bulky. Happy Quilting!

    First Quilt? Here's what I'll Add..
    It took me 4 days to finish, so dont expect it to be a quick process. That was busting my butt to get it done.
    Baby size is appropriate for children likely nearing 8 years old. Start small too.. for sure.
    Purchase a walking foot.. even with mine my lines were wonky- but I couldnt begin to imagine my lines without it. (And im already fairly ok at line work!)
    Your repeat quilt top fabric should definitely have a solid background if your using a white background on the pretty pieces. Or vise versa.
    I used the same color thread for Bobbin & Top.. I purchased 3 for the entire baby quilt. (270yd/spool). I ran out. Buy 4 spools of thread. You'll need roughly 1000yds of thread total.
    Prewind your bobbins. I used about 6 full bobbins of thread total. This includes the boarder.
    Use 3 or 3.5 inches vs 2.5 in for the boarder cuts. Wonky stitches us beginners tend to do will need extra room. When you match the end of the boarder make sure you cut the 3 inches as well.
    If you have the time, hand stitch the boarder. It would be easier im sure and the quilt would look better. I still had to handstitch my corners. LOL For me- the boarder was the WORST. It takes longer than it looks, and requires precision.
    Best of Luck!!!

But when you break it down to the basics, it much more approachable. I try to remember that humans have been sewing by hand for a very long time. So really we don't need much! :) Have fun sewing! - Dana

    So Dana,
    I have a question. Can you make a duvet cover using a patchwork design... like with a quilt... but without the "quilt sandwich" (particularly, without the backing). I have had only 1 duvet cover for about 5 years. I can afford another, and the only have bits and peices of fabric... no large peices. All the information I've found all insist that you NEED a backing fabric.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  3 года назад +1

      Yes! You could definitely do that! That would be a really fun duvet cover. Making a duvet cover is sort of like making a giant pillow case!

    How does it stay together after u cut some of the string area u sewed?
    Are u using a regular sewing machine or one made for quilting?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  3 года назад

      I'm using a standard sewing machine. I'm not sure what part you're referring to. The raw edges where I cut the strings ends up being bound around the edge with the binding, so everything is enclosed! So there are no "loose strings" :) Hopefully that's what you were referring to.

    When shopping for fabric how much fabric should you ask for in each of the color prints?

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  3 года назад

      You can find all that info in the pattern....but for the Baby size, Throw size, or Twin, you only need 1/4 yard of fabric for each colorful stripe. You need fabric for the background stripes too (the white area in my quilt). You can download the free pattern on my site here: shop.madeeveryday.com/products/stripey-quilt-pattern-free
