Beta-canon coming up, subject to rewrite by the series and movies: The Sovereign was the hero ship in the second half of the Bridge Commander video game (still the best Trek game IMO) after the Galaxy-class Dauntless (NCC-17879) got destroyed. The Sovereign's registry number in that game was NCC-73811 (and NX-90201 before the class went into production). Beta canon also claims that the Enterprise-E was originally supposed to be the USS Honorius.
From what I know from Beta Canon, the first of any new ship class is a "test bed" for the class. Thus the Constitution was an NX class during test phases. When the new class gets an okay, it's somewhat of a tradition to "retire" the prototype, give it an active NCC number & use new names for all future ships of the line. The exceptions in "real" canon are Excelsior (test bed for a new type of warp signature & pseudo battle cruiser. Refitted w/a "corrected" faster & more efficient warp engine system, then given an NCC classification under its prototype name), Defiant (Defiant was a test bed for an anti-Borg "Fast Attack" ship, but defaults kept it from being qualified for use. They were later fixed & sent to DS9 as a perimeter defense ship).
Definitely the most elegant design from modern Trek. I thought I read something in beta cannon about how the E was deliberately kept away from the Dominion War, but in reality the film production people didn’t want DS9 to have any Sovereign class ship on it, in case it got blown up... even though DS9 was so kind to loan them the Defiant (which, as you mentioned, the film people wanted to blow up).
Narratively, it was the most convenient to have worf come in the Defiant because they needed him in the movie and it was established that the defiant was built to fight borg, so it would be silly to not have it at the big borg fight.
I always assumed that Enterprise-E was leading one of the Starfleet fleets in the Dominion War, likely under Picard's direct command. There are not many officers in any navy of the caliber of Picard and Sisko. Putting them in the same place would be inefficient. So Picard was elsewhere, doing his thing. But it would have been nice to get a mention at least. And having the -E in the "welcome home" fleet would have made PERFECT sense, as Picard is the number-one Borg killer in Starfleet. But how do you put Enterprise there and not the crew? Potentially upstaging the main series actors? They did do something like this in the Star Trek: Enterprise finale and it bombed. So maybe it was a good move after all. :)
The Kelsey Grammer episode is actually probably my favorite episode of Star Trek the next generation. Cause and Effect, the "Groundhogs Day" of Star Trek. Just imagine if Bill Murray would have been First Officer.
My friend was who helped them convert the Enterprise (and other ships later) into CGI. They brought the physical models (yes models plural) to London to show him (and his team) what they needed. There is a full model but there are also other models of parts of the ship for close up camera work, they took up almost all of the floor space of his company. The issue was that none of the models were to a standard scale, so when he made the 1st CGI model he did it to exacting standards of the main model which when you did a close up meant details were too large. Now he knew this was a problem before he sent the model but they insisted that it was a single CGI model that they were going to work from. It took months of going back and forth before they accepted the model (it may have been more than one model, but because of the security he doesn't even know). I was fortunate enough to see the original models (and the crazy security they surrounded them with) also much of the work that he did the vast majority of by himself.

There is a photo out there of the Galaxy class model but with the 1701E registry. I think ILM expected them to just give Picard an upgraded Galaxy class
Great video! Now, apologies If someone else has pointed this out already, but the Enterprise D was not portrayed by the same studio model for the entire run of the series. There were originally two models, one six feet long and one two feet long. But an intermediate sized four foot model was built during season 3. It had greater surface detail, and was easier to work with than the massive six foot model. It also incorporated several small design tweaks, including a new row of windows on the leading edge of the saucer to indicate the location of Ten Forward.
That game is epic especially with the mods. I remember trying to download the 1.1 patch on a dial up connection, would always disconnect at about 68% lol!
I'm loving this series so far! It'd be great to see more based on some of the additional ships that only have a limited presence, or only show up for a limited number of a show's episodes. Or you could potentially combine two or three ships into one episode, if there's only a small amount of information available? Personally, two potential ships I'd love to see the secrets of, would be: - The USS Equinox - from that Voyager two-parter of the same name - which had so much detail but didn't feel fully explored on-screen. It was a fascinating little ship, with a design that seemed to take a bit of influence from the Enterprise-E, whilst still being smaller than Voyager (probably a little over half the size, based on the shots of the two ships together). - The USS Prometheus - from the Voyager episode Message in a Bottle - it gets even less screen-time but was a fascinating prototype ship. It had a lot of fascinating concepts - like the ability to split into three ships, allowing it to then dominate over any attacking ship.
Loved 'Ship Of The Line' book with captain Frasier! The Enterprise E was very nearly a Galaxy Class starship too! They were unsure of the budget pre-production and actually re-dressed the Enterprise D model with a letter 'E'! Thank god they found a few extra quid for a new model!
Yeah and that is what happened to the Enterprise-E during her 1st year of service. Captain Bateson/Frasier lol. Took her out on a shake down and then decided to use it to attack the Klingon Empire. Just to loss the Enterprise to them and they took it to attack Cardassia Prime. It was all in the book Ship of The Line as gap filler for generations to first contact.
My headcannon is that in the Dominion war they were keeping the enterprise in reserve as a last defense in case things got too bad. They didn't want to risk losing such an advanced ship that could be their only defense later on down the line. I don't know if that makes any sense though, I haven't watched DS9 in a while
I think a runabout episode would be great! They always get overshadowed by the Defiant but the runabouts saw quite a bit of used throughout DS9, one ep of TNG, and Harry Kim was designing the next class of runabout in one alternate reality ep of Voyager. The exteriors has different designs, with a sensor pod sometimes there, and the interiors were much larger than the cockpit shots suggested
@The 1Summoner it's technically "soft-canon" as the stories there are official and approved by CBS, but would be overwritten by any events occurring in shows/movies. So until something conflicts, the events of STO stand.
Dunno why but I really love the idea of the deflector dish, as a practical dramatic/scientific tool but also as an aesthetic for Starfleet ships. It's hard to picture a ship in that fleet without one, just like it's hard to picture a starfleet ship without the trademark warp nacells.
The Nova class might be interesting (seen as the USS Equinox in Voyager, and a slightly refit version under Harry Kim's command in Endgame). Something very similar to it was shown as a possible Enterprise-E in the Next Gen technical manual.
The Sovereign class would have already been in production by the time the Enterprise-E was built. Plus, as shown during the Dominion war’s kitbashing the Federation has a remarkable ability to quickly design and build new ships.
It was according to the RPG basically they started to design the Sovereign class shortly after the Dominion destroyed a Galaxy Class. They realised that war was almost inevitable, and that the Galaxy Class while a decent vessel for it's role was flawed, so they started work on it's replacement.
Not to mention I think its mentioned in the background somewhere that the Enterprise E was originally called the USS Sentinel, but was renamed after the Enterprise D was destroyed. Its not like Starfleet doesn't do this on the regular anyway - they did it with the Enterprise A (originally the Yorktown or the Ti-Ho, depending on sources) and Defiant (Sao Paulo, though oddly the Defiant A isn't ever referenced as that, and weirdly should be the Defiant B in any case since there was a USS Defiant Constitution...).Ent
@@andyme3541 Still a pretty tight frame of period to design and build it. Revise a planned design, maybe? And I heard same, for re-name, except it was the USS Honorious previously.
@@chrissonofpear1384 Actually I may have made a small mistake, I'll dig out the rule book to check. I did they actually started work on the design of the ship the year before they discovered the Bajorian Wormhole, it was started as a Deep Space Exploration Vessel better able to handle deep space threats such as the Borg, so it's more a kin to the Defiant and the Akira Class. Which actually when you think about it makes sense, three classes of Ship in different Weight Classes, the Defiant a heavy Gun ship, likely stationed at a Space Station in peacetime like we see it on the show, heavy fire power but not built for long deployments. The Akira a heavier Patrol ship able to handle Months out in space. Then the Sovereign A Deep Space Exploration Ship, able to go years away from Port, if need be, and packing enough firepower to handle threats like the Borg at least long enough to get away. Through in my defence it is likely they gave it a greater priority after the Dominion Encounter. As we did see that Star Fleet had started to back away from the new ships it had designed when the Borg didn't come back after Wolf.
The random uniform change midway through DS9 to account for the new look in First Contact always threw me. But it was nice that when they showed the real Julian and the on the station was an impostor, the real one still had the old uniform style on to show he'd been there a while. Why DID they change their uniforms, anyway?
It's funny you even mention that Adam because I've actually been on board the the Yorktown that was renamed it's here in Charleston South Carolina you can take tours on it. And when you get there at tells what you just said that the original Yorktown was sunk at the Battle of Midway and this ship was renamed the Yorktown. Very cool
My theory about the decks is that in order to encourage more superstitious cultures to join Starfleet, they number their decks to skip what they consider to be unlucky numbers, like how old skyscrapers didn’t have a 13th floor. That’s how we can have a deck 26 on a ship with only 24 decks.
The model of the Enterprise E that they used to film the collision sequence in Nemesis is seen in the background of the Enterprise episode Regeneration. It's at the beginning just after the title in the snowy Borg wreckage.
I have to say, I adore your vids. I was 8 (1978) when I saw my first Star Trek episode. The Corbomite Manoeuvre. I watched it with my brand new stepfather whom I had known for about half an hour. Seminal moment. Thanks a lot!!!🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖
The 4th iteration of the Enterprise E is armed with polaron weapons , quantum torpedoes and a high capacity shield matrix , Starfleet acquired polaron beam technology following the Dominion War Ablative armor is also incorporated in tandem with the new shield matrix.
During WWII, three ESSEX class aircraft carriers were renamed prior to launch to take the name of a prior aircraft carrier that that was sunk by in the early part of WWII USS Hornet, USS Lexington, USS Yorktown and USS Wasp. The former aircraft carrier USS Langley was also sunk and an Independence class light aircraft carrier was renamed after that ship.
I haven't researched the validity but as I know there were rules to design a ship. One of them was that the pylons had to be in direct line of sight. So the "moving up and down" of Voyager was to NOT break that rule. Meaning that for warp they have to be in direct line of sight but when using impulse, they could pay them flat. (Btw. the Defiant's "Pylons" were actually in direct line of sight. Just to get ahead of some comments about defiant breaking those design rules)
The other reason given, which is a call-back to a TNG episode, is that the Intrepid-class of starship was designed with variable geometry nacelle pylons due to the damage higher warp velocities were doing to subspace in many regions. This geometry change was said to affect the warp field/bubble shape, ergo affecting the stresses place upon the region of subspace being interacted with during FTL travel.
There were two filming models of the Enterprise D - They are not the same, more surface details on the second one. You can actually see the difference between some of the older stock shot of the early seasons that get re-used in later episodes in addition to shots with the newer model.
Worf isn't captain of the Enterprise, he was told in Deep Space Nine that it's unlikely he would ever be offered a command after he chose to save his wife rather than complete a mission to rescue a defector.
True, but Adm. Picard could have expended a lot of political capital and made Worf Captain before he resigned from Starfleet. Plus, maybe Riker and Ezri Dax vouched for Worf, too. Sisko was still in the Wormhole, so he couldn’t argue his point in person.
Showcasing some of the alien vessels would be cool. Back in the seventies one of my friends had a beat up old Plymouth that everyone called a Klingon vessel 🖖🖖
The master design for the Sovereign class was for the bridge to be above Deck 1, therefore creating 24 decks. Later advances and a refit after the Sovereign was built let the Enterprise have 26 decks, although only 24 were usable (Geordi mentions that the big E has been in space for a year), probably due to errors identified in the shakedown process. (This could be seen by Picard's lack of reaction when Crusher asks if more shakedown time is needed.) After FC, a refit lower hull allowed for new warp nacelles as well as new decks. In addition, Riker (and Worf) do NOT fight the Remans on Deck 29. They head to Deck 29, but meet the Remans halfway, somewhere around Decks 13-16. This is why Vkruk was able to fall several decks to his death. Unfortunately the dialogue doesn't make this clear, however this is the logical answer to this problem. BTW, would you like me to fact check you for future Star Trek videos? I've only been a fan for the last 32 years with every episode in my collection as well as committed to memory.
My favorite US Navy trivia is the USS Ohio. Labels on the Ohio still say Michigan. It was the Ohio Class and the first ship of any class is the same name. But the Michigan was going to be completed first due to delays on the Ohio, so rather than rename the class, they swapped the names of the boats.
7:05 What I remember from when Star Trek IV first came out, the original ship that ended up rechristened Enterprise NCC-1701-A was named the USS Ti-Ho. What I'd like to know is when did they give up on Ti-Ho in canon and go with Yorktown?
@@Chillyzirconium really wish she'd gotten more screen time. My only concern is that if the E is brought back for Picard season two, it'll look very different given the new Star Trek license restrictions.
@@Chillyzirconium I gotta say, Picard was not cup of tea, felt very let down by the story. While I love the E, my hat goes off to Voyager for good Borg stories.
I believe that the Enterprise was mainly used during the war for all the diplomatic missions being the flagship. Insurrection hinted at this at the start with the Enterprise on mission getting a newly warp capable species into the federation. So they was behind the scenes recruiting and resource gathering.
#7 I think, under special circumstances, plans do change. So it is possible they were already building the new sovereign class ship, then just named it the enterprise when it was complete. An example from Stargate. They were building a new ship named the Phoenix (as detailed in an alternate timeline episode near the end of Stargate Atlantis), but when (The actor who played) General Hammond died, (followed up on in Stargate Universe) they renamed the ship to the General Hammond.
#6 The Deflector Dish was powered down and altered by the Borg for their transmission. The Deflector Dish is normally so bright it literally causes the immediately surrounding material around the Deflector Dish emitters to glow as well, thus you have a big blue glowy. It emits so much radiation (like a radar station) it literally causes the housing of the Deflector Dish to glow as well.
As a side note the ship was in the "non canon/partial Canon" being designed by Scotty after he decided he wasn't ready to retire. He was key in its creation of this class, and there was a USS Sovereign.
They probably left out some deck numbers, due to bad luck, like hotels do (Many have no floor 13). And with more species around, there might be more unlucky numbers, that have been skipped.
the D *does* change over the course of TNG. the shot you showed was the second iteration, the four-foot model. it adds an extra deck to saucer section to account for the new 10-forward set, which radically changed the originally intended single deck high edge of the saucer. it was supposed to have a walkway that went all the way around the saucer, with windows up and down. the new set required everything double in size. you can tell the four foot second model from the original six foot (and rarely seen two foot) model because it looks chunkier, and the hull details have more dimensionality. the went back to the original six foot model for "generations" but changed the paint. (they also changed the "D" to an "E" before crating it up, but that never appeared anywhere.)
First Contact: There was 24 decks. Decks 1 to 26. Some decks were multiple decks (think hangers, cargo bays, main engineering) basically house multiple decks. What is likely the case is Deck 16 is actually Decks 16-18, it went Deck 15, Deck 16, Deck 19. Nemesis, the Enterprise was refit, the ventral hull is likely a large area that has a 3-4 deck fall and the deck they were fighting in was likely Deck 25~
My headcanon is the deflector is active (glowing) when the ship is at warp deflecting space particles. but when stationary (like in this scene) or traveling at Impulse smaller deflectors like the ones on the Enterprise D saucer are used.
I love this design, I think is perfect, I prefer it over the Odyssey class Enterprise. If I remember correctly and if it is canon, the USS Sovereign made an appearance in the Star Trek Bridge Commander game and one of the dialog lines says something about how advanced the new class is. Also the Picard and Data show up in the game aboard the Enterprise D.
The reason the turn quick turn around time between D and E, was that the the Sovereign class had already been designed, and the space frame was already under construction. I forget the original name of the ship, but it was re-christened USS Enterprise NCC 1701-E when 1701-D was destroyed.
I always was disappointed that we never got to see more of the Enterprise E and see it in better lighting. It really is a beautiful ship.
Like Worf, I prefer the E. She's such a sexy ship. I was guttered we didn't get to see more of her.

Yes. They recycled the E-D model thinking it would remain a Galaxy class.
The Excelsior, Borg Cube, Enterprise NX-01, the Discovery, the Cerritos... Keep'em coming Adam!!!
The USS Sovereign was the hero ship in the Star Trek Bridge Commander game.
That game is epic especially with the mods. I remember trying to download the 1.1 patch on a dial up connection, would always disconnect at about 68% lol!
Thus Enterptise is the SECOND of the class
@@paulrasmussen8953 Yes, and in some novels and forum posts and the like, the ship was supposedly previously named USS Honorious.
I used to love manually phasing the saucer sections of other ships in skirmishes when I had disabled them. I loved burning lines across them haha
when is that game going to get a hd remaster or sequel awesome game one of the best
I'm loving this series so far! It'd be great to see more based on some of the additional ships that only have a limited presence, or only show up for a limited number of a show's episodes. Or you could potentially combine two or three ships into one episode, if there's only a small amount of information available? Personally, two potential ships I'd love to see the secrets of, would be:
- The USS Equinox - from that Voyager two-parter of the same name - which had so much detail but didn't feel fully explored on-screen.
May as well do the Enterprise NX-01 to round it out.
I think he covered that one already.
@@roboticcynic580 OK, cool. Just must not be in the playlist, then. Thanks.
@@roboticcynic580 Nope, not yet
About decks, is it possible to have more than one deck on the same elevation?
My headcannon is that in the Dominion war they were keeping the enterprise in reserve as a last defense in case things got too bad. They didn't want to risk losing such an advanced ship that could be their only defense later on down the line. I don't know if that makes any sense though, I haven't watched DS9 in a while
First Contact is definitely the best Trek movie ever made
I like how Adam subtly flipped everyone off when he said "I am Adam Cleary and these are"
1:55 yeah.. I had to pause the video to confirm that's what I was seeing lolz
I love this series so much. I would be so happy to see other ships from Romulans or Klingons if you guys have the time.
Star trek online has the Enterprise F as an odyssey class with a Andorian captain , Va'Kel Shon.
@The 1Summoner it's technically "soft-canon" as the stories there are official and approved by CBS, but would be overwritten by any events occurring in shows/movies. So until something conflicts, the events of STO stand.
The F is for failure. It's a Star Trek on line fan contest winning entry and I does look the part.
A vid on my favourite Enterprise on my birthday? Awesome!
I want to give you a great big hug for the absolutely delightful pedantry of "You can see the wall of the Enterprise E!"
There’s still the nx-01 enterprise/nx class, the enterprise b/excelsior class. The miranda class maybe?
And the underrated 2150's era Intrepid class we briefly see occasionally.
Give us the federation's time ship, remember the two hour episode of Voyager. Thank you and "Make it so".
@@andyme3541 Hmm, which RPG company is it? Decipher? Last Unicorn? Modiphius?
Enterprise NCC-1701-J from Star Trek: Enterprise (Captain Archer meets "crewman Daniels" in the Federation's future).
Excellent! Star trek can never stop evolving! Michael McClary
nice just the one i was asking/waiting for. the Sovereign is just so pretty.
The 10ft Enterprise E was sold during the Christie Auction
Any idea how much for?
The random uniform change midway through DS9 to account for the new look in First Contact always threw me. But it was nice that when they showed the real Julian and the on the station was an impostor, the real one still had the old uniform style on to show he'd been there a while. Why DID they change their uniforms, anyway?
As usual with the military, they found a cheaper manufacturer.
@@peterkapunkt6783 Works for me.
By far my favorite ship in the Star Trek franchise.
The 4th iteration of the Enterprise E is armed with polaron weapons , quantum torpedoes and a high capacity shield matrix , Starfleet acquired polaron beam technology following the Dominion War
Ablative armor is also incorporated in tandem with the new shield matrix.
And a seatbelt for the captain. Don't forget that.
Glad that's not canon... starfleet ships don't suit purple...
Well done Adam! Great stuff and great work!!
Probably watched this video 4 or 5 times and only notice Adam flips us the bird around 1:54 when he does the intro lol😂
In one of the books, Capt Picard says he respects Capt Sisko’s judgement but he believes Worf deserves to be promoted and makes him his first officer.
@@captdru1893 It wasn't Captain Sisko's judgement, it was starfleet's.
Nice call-out to junkball, you two are my favorite trek channels
Showcasing some of the alien vessels would be cool. Back in the seventies one of my friends had a beat up old Plymouth that everyone called a Klingon vessel 🖖🖖
My favorite version of the E was from Nemesis.
Another great video from a real professional
Man, you're presenting this video very well. :D
7:05 What I remember from when Star Trek IV first came out, the original ship that ended up rechristened Enterprise NCC-1701-A was named the USS Ti-Ho. What I'd like to know is when did they give up on Ti-Ho in canon and go with Yorktown?
The best Enterprise!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!
By far the best looking, though lacking in personality due to its lack of screen time
@@Chillyzirconium really wish she'd gotten more screen time. My only concern is that if the E is brought back for Picard season two, it'll look very different given the new Star Trek license restrictions.
@Tristan Goodfellow, would be great to see the E in a TV show set when it's Borg-combat based purpose is obsolete and it is not so futuristic.
@@Chillyzirconium I gotta say, Picard was not cup of tea, felt very let down by the story. While I love the E, my hat goes off to Voyager for good Borg stories.
Agreed. Ironically it was Star Treks most isolated show from the rest of the universe that had the best Borg stories
You definitely flipped everyone off when you introduced yourself. Well done mate
So entertaining.. Golly gee, I like your script and visuals.
I believe that the Enterprise was mainly used during the war for all the diplomatic missions being the flagship. Insurrection hinted at this at the start with the Enterprise on mission getting a newly warp capable species into the federation. So they was behind the scenes recruiting and resource gathering.
miss you on the ups & downs for the star trek shows :(
Love the picture behind you, as someone from the north east
#7 I think, under special circumstances, plans do change. So it is possible they were already building the new sovereign class ship, then just named it the enterprise when it was complete.
An example from Stargate. They were building a new ship named the Phoenix (as detailed in an alternate timeline episode near the end of Stargate Atlantis), but when (The actor who played) General Hammond died, (followed up on in Stargate Universe) they renamed the ship to the General Hammond.
Yes! Please do a 10 secrets of the Excelsior-class or specifically the U.S.S. Excelsior.
How about a video on the Miranda/Soyuz class ships, like the USS Reliant?
According to STO, the E was defending Earth during the Breen attack.
STO is the closest we get to canon. I have a lifer sub.
As a side note the ship was in the "non canon/partial Canon" being designed by Scotty after he decided he wasn't ready to retire. He was key in its creation of this class, and there was a USS Sovereign.
my fav is the constitution refit in its prestine motion picture drydock form. Favorite model to make in all forms
They probably left out some deck numbers, due to bad luck, like hotels do (Many have no floor 13). And with more species around, there might be more unlucky numbers, that have been skipped.
@@chacaf22 I just assume 24 decks, myself. And pretty sure Nemesis was mean't to have 'deck 9, section 20' in script.
the D *does* change over the course of TNG. the shot you showed was the second iteration, the four-foot model. it adds an extra deck to saucer section to account for the new 10-forward set, which radically changed the originally intended single deck high edge of the saucer. it was supposed to have a walkway that went all the way around the saucer, with windows up and down. the new set required everything double in size. you can tell the four foot second model from the original six foot (and rarely seen two foot) model because it looks chunkier, and the hull details have more dimensionality.
the went back to the original six foot model for "generations" but changed the paint. (they also changed the "D" to an "E" before crating it up, but that never appeared anywhere.)
And yews, the Sovereign class....what a beautiful ship....
Great series bout our favorite starships. I’d like to recommend the Titan or Ceredos!
Love these !! Secrets of the Borg Cube
Now we need one about the Enterprise C. :)
The reason the turn quick turn around time between D and E, was that the the Sovereign class had already been designed, and the space frame was already under construction. I forget the original name of the ship, but it was re-christened USS Enterprise NCC 1701-E when 1701-D was destroyed.
