Sisko should have started as Captain and been promoted to Commodore. His responsibilities were to big for a mere Commander! Vice Admiral Takamura, Commander of StarBase 173. Admiral Dexter Holt, Commander of Deep Space 3, Vice Admiral William Ross, Commander, Federation Forces Starbase 375. The Starfleet officer rank system is based on the US Navy system where Commodore is a full-fledged military rank between Captain and Rear Admiral, that is assigned only during time of war. Sisko was at Lt. Commander though during Wolf 359 and his transfer to Utopia Planitia likely slowed down his development. But he was a single parent at the time and grieving the loss of his wife so being closer to home was probably what he needed. He didn't want to move Jake to Bajor and take command of DS9 though. But obviously that corresponds to his rank of full Commander and then we say his development from there.

Captain Picard had a painting of a space station in his quarters. Considering there’s a painting of the Enterprise D and a model of the Stargazer in his ready room, I think the show runners wanted to hint that Picard may have been in command of that space station at some point. What you have to remember that just as in the real Navy (upon which Star Trek’s rank system is based), there is the RANK of CAPTAIN and the POSITION of CAPTAIN. The rank itself is a higher rank but it doesn’t guarantee that you will achieve the CAPTAINCY of a vessel or station or outpost. Another term for CAPTAIN (referring to the POSITION not the RANK), is COMMANDING OFFICER (or C.O.). So you can be a CAPTAIN-COMMANDING OFFICER but NOT hold the RANK of CAPTAIN. This happens all the time in the Navy. You often see a Lieutenant Commander serving as a CAPTAIN (the POSITION) of a smaller vessel or non-capital ship or even a shore facility like a Frigate or an Supply Ship or a small base. One example of this (and the only Star Trek CAPTAIN of a ship or facility who wasn’t a CAPTAIN in rank is Benjamin Sisko). Later he is promoted to CAPTAIN in rank, but before that he was only a COMMANDER (one rank lower) but still the COMMANDING OFFICER of DS9 and the Defiant as he held the rank of Commander.. Most of the time DS9 avoids confusing the viewers by rarely referring to him as the “Captain of DS9” in position, which he TECHNICALLY he was as its Commanding Officer. They refer to him as “Commander Sisko” until he gets his promotion to Captain (in rank), though he already was a “Captain”. I can understand why they would avoid calling Sisko a “Captain” before he achieved the rank to avoid confusion (though I think they should have started him off as a Captain in the first place...). Are there Captains that are NOT commanding officers of a vessel or ship? Absolutely! In the Navy these officers are normally taken off of any ships and placed on shore facilities as an attaché (assistant) to an Admiral. You see this once or twice in TNG BUT they don’t talk much about it.

I actually think it was a lot harder on Archer than any of the others after he became Captain (rather than in getting to Captain). Not only did he not have any accumulated mission logs or previous examples from other Captains throughout history to learn from, but his was the first and only Starfleet vessel at the time setting out to explore the vast and cold blackness of space. They had to find their way, make contact with unknown species and chart completely new territory completely alone. There wasn’t an entire fleet of other ships to call for help if you needed it. It would have been a daunting prospect to say the least, but Archer and crew were more than up for it.

This was outstanding! While, I have seen all the classic Star Trek shows which, aired on network TV. Can only remember the details of how they became either a Star Ship or Space Station Captain for a few. For example, the Deep Space Nine back story is special because the commander was passed over for a promotion to the rank of Captain and then sent to an "out of the way" posting that few in Star Fleet even carried about. However, after finding a stable "worm hole" and meeting an advanced alien race (the prophets) things changed.

With the loss of his wife however, he longer had that "command altitude" and continued to "blame"Captain Parcard, for the death of his wife (both which, according to Star Fleet standards showed that he was not yet ready for the higher rank of Captain).

TrekCulture: Here are some you have missed: Captain Robert T. April / Captain Garrovick / Captain Matt Decker / Captain Will Decker / Captain Hikaru Sulu / Captain Styles / Captain Edward Jellico / Captain Benjamin Maxwell / Captain Erik Pressman / Captain Silva La Forge / Captain Zimbata / Captain Robert DeSoto / Captain Leyton / Captain Tim Watters / Captain Solok / Captain Nog (In an alternate timeline 2422) / Captain Rudolph "Rudy" Ransom / Captain Harry Kim (In an alternate 25th century timeline) / Captain Michael Burnham (Mirror universe) / Captain Sylvia Tilly (Captain Killy (Mirror universe)) / Captain Beverly Picard (In an alternate future, Beverly had been promoted to captain and was commanding the medical ship USS Pasteur) / Captain Geordi La Forge (In another alternate timeline, La Forge had been promoted to the rank of captain by 2390 and was in command of the Galaxy-class USS Challenger. In that year, he pursued Chakotay, Harry Kim, Tessa Omond and The Doctor in a stolen Delta Flyer to the Takara sector in an attempt to stop them from changing history by preventing the destruction of the USS Voyager fifteen years earlier. (VOY: "Timeless")) / Captain ______ Madge Sinclair played an unknown (Saratoga Captain (uncredited)), in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) / Captain Joel Randolph (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) / Captain Clark Terrell (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). I don't think you need to worry about George Kirk and Saru, because they were only acting Captains. I take you were only interested in Starfleet captains, so i didn't include the others. I'm sure you know other races have captains too such as the Klingons, the Romulans, the Vulcans, and the Cardassians etc. etc..

      Captain Bryce Shumar, USS Essex
      Any others?

    My ranking for captains
    1. Picard - reason for Picard is just that he use his head and diplomacy he is not really giving up and always trying to find new solutions.
-Since i didn't saw a new series of ST i don't know about Riker but sure he was my favorite First Officer. I mean you can't find better chemistry and balance between first and captain then Picard and Riker.
2.Janeway - reason mostly because i start with Voyager as of my first ST series and at very beginning i didn't know what to think of her she wasn't really sure how she should act but later she becomes a reason why Voyager was good and enjoyable experience, i thought i would never like a woman as captain but Janeway sure changes my mind in this area :D
3.Sisko - DS9 was a blast also because of him i like that he can really put in line some good use of a force when needed and he is not afraid to risk, captains before him where always diplomatic and Sisko let's say he was until enemy didn't really act like an asshole.
    4. Kirk (Kelvin) : Ahhh hard to say i didn't really like him at start because he was just too crazy a very definition what captain should not be specially with his "fuck everything and lets jump right into it" type of personality but he changed and was ok.

I suspect that Riker, as 'Acting Captain' was exercising positional authority normally in the wheelhouse of an Admiral just as Sisko did while 'commanding' a fleet of starships from USS Defiant with the rank of Captain.

All the movies after nemesis and shows after enterprise are just fan fiction from people who never watched Star Trek. Jar Jar Abrams said he never watched it because he didn’t get it, and the rest is just ripped off of Tardigrades

Captain Harry Kim (USS Rhode Island)
