Just bought a white p90 version on sale because it was 'used', got home and realized it was only built this past march. Looks and sounds great, plays fantastic. Don't know why the previous owner took it back but I got one killer deal on a 3 month old guitar. All the people looking at the super expensive Epiphones should look at these as well

These sound absolutely killer to me. I would urge you to go with one of these SC ones. I have a LP that's double the price but this one also sounds really nice.
All Gibson USA guitars since 2014 get plek'd at the factory ..my 2021 tribute came perfect and a great factory setup . No dead notes or bad fretwork . Plays and sounds like a much more expensive Gibson model and that's a huge win for us customers who can't quite afford a standard , a classic or anything above that unless we want payments and interest forever lol
I just bought the Gibson 2020 Les Paul Special Tribute with humbuckers in White. I could have bought the Epi 59 Standard and probably would have had they not been on back order. Also, I should mention that the day before I bought a 2013 Gibson LPJ. (My very first Gibson!!!) They are both incredible guitars! Anyway, first time watcher of this show. It's great too! Keep rockin' everyone and stay safe!
I remember when I picked up a 2016 Studio Faded T LP for £599 brand new that very year. Now they're coveted for being the only lower end production model by Gibson to have a 59 neck profile since. Odd for some reason and especially for the price back then. This pricing on this one is ridiculous for the money.
Was that price at the end of the year or when it was introduced? Because we all know if these don't sell out crazy fast, they'll be $200-$300 cheaper at least in the fall. Or cheaper.
But those aren't proper '58 Special's this is a lot closer. From the P-90's to the pick guard to the stop bar, two volume, two tone, that's what a special is supposed to be.
Simon Singh Seriously? These guitars were never, in living memory, for sale at the point of introduction for £400-£500!! You may have found the odd one in a “fire sale” by specific stores at the end of the year as they clear stock for the new Gibson models that always used to be released in the new year, but I doubt even that! I suspect you’re confusing the pricing and also confusing these with the DC Junior Tributes which were fundamentally simpler guitars: single pickup, “swimming pool” pickup and wiring routing under a larger scratchplate (on which the pickups and wiring were mounted), etc. I picked one of those up in late 2018 on discount (if I recall the RRP then was £699 for those), but even then I paid £549 (£150 off a brand new £699 US made guitar is still a fairly decent discount).
I wanted to buy LP for a long time, looking mostly at Epis, but couldn't stand that ugly headstock shape. So eventually I just bought beautiful Gibson in Wine Red and never had any regrets. My first Schecter wasn't much worse feel-wise (it had wonderful setup), my first Fender was great for clean tones on neck pickup, I even got crazy skull and bones Samick from 80's which I love to bits, but... Well, while I love all my guitars for one reason or another, when I take my LP and strum it, I feel that it is worth every last $ I payed for it. Maybe it is just me, but on my Gibson I am just 20% better player than I am on any other guitar.
I love my Schecters and I love my Gibson Explorer, both great brands and each one has it's pluses and minuses. My Explorer and my Hellraiser C-1 Passive FR both inspire me more than the other guitars I have.
@@robertpurdy4452 well, my Schecter was MIC Omen-6, basically bottom of the line, but it felt great to play. Pickups were trash, as expected from such low-end model, but I think that on cheap instruments it is much better to invest in good wooden parts, fret job and general playability and let buyer eventually install pickups he prefer. Gibson LP was totally different, PLEK setup from the factory is no joke and wider neck with asymmetrical carve fits my big hands perfectly. And I am totally aware that I overpayed for flame top, nitro finish, binding, MOP inlays and all that fancy stuff which I don't really need as a player. But I like fancy stuff, can't help it, lol. Bottom line is: you usually get what you pay for, just be aware where manufacturer put those production expenses.
@@robertpurdy4452 My 2006 Gibson Explorer is still my go to guitar to this day(Many Gibsons later..). I currently own a 2005 Schecter C1 XXX that NEVER gets played. The only reason I'm holding on to it is due to their 'rarity'. Kind of.
My 2019 Les Paul Tribute is a killer guitar. It’s got all the rock guitar crunch one could want. I DID, however, have to spend some time dialing it in. Truss rod, action, string height, pickup height…all needed a little love. I also dialed in the nut slots, as well as modded the G and D string slots….AND, up-post wound the A, D, G & B strings. The guitar STAYS IN TUNE…like an oldTele. Im a Gibson man now…😜
Have to say, I really like the double cut LP tributes. These look like the really low cost Epiphones. And £900 for them is fiercely expensive. Still: no robot tuners so the internet message boards will love them...
Lol, I've always thought that those DC Specials look more like Epiphones. My opinion on those DC Specials: bigger pickguard = more plastic = more cheaper.
Oscar Sierra Yeah, and Epiphone them selves don't even sell those ultra-cheap guitars anymore (unless you buy a starter-pack) I personally don't mind them though, just wish they would have made a tribute LP Junior
I went and tried the dc and left with it ($699)because they are sweet guitars! These play and sound good to me! Better than my Epi for certain. Try one out and enjoy! To each their own though! And ya $999 isn’t cheap but inflation has been rocking since 2008 unfortunately.
Totally with you guys, we need to get back to normal asap, but in the meantime loving the videos and the commitment to providing us with great reviews. Thank you!!
I'm perfectly happy with my Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top PRO...and the $400 I saved went towards a Marshall DSL-20 head which btw, sounds great with a 4×12" cab!!!
The first time I watched this video I bought the white one. I’m very happy 😃. The video you did on the Squier Classic vibe Tele I bought one of those too. Thank goodness I have a good amp I’m running out of money. I bought my amp in 1996 Crate Vintage 30 with 12” speaker before RUclips was a thing. Now I watch out for pedals and watch you guys jam. Keep it up 👍
Very late to the party but I put my double cut tribute up for sale and it sold immediately for more than I expected and have recently bought the single cut P90 and I'm a happy chappy. The pick ups are a little lower output than the double cut which I also like and the neck profile is called "round" which full and comfortable to play!
jgenoese Ok, the price differential is pretty big, but to be fair if you look at the detail of the differences you start to understand a little better why that may be: - it’s not just a different colour Gibson logo! Lol. The one on these guitars is silk screened (basically painted on!) whereas on the “full fat” model it’s the proper Gibson inlay; - these guitars have the open-pore satin nitro finish whereas the proper Specials have a full gloss nitrocellulose finish. This is significantly more time consuming, and therefore more expensive, to do, especially at US labour rates; - neck binding... this is a manual task. Again, US labour costs make this a more expensive additional feature than you might think (some other US manufacturers either don’t offer binding options at all or they usually only do them in a very limited availability on their higher up models, e.g. PRS and Fender); - the “proper” model comes with a Gibson hard case rather than the gig bag; and - general higher quality of components across the board, as implied by things such as nickel hardware vs chrome and the wiring harness specs. I can still see your point about the size of the price differential (which is actually $600 on the Gibson MSRP in the US) . But personally I think Gibson have gone in too aggressively low with the price of the Tribute model rather than that the “full” model Special is too expensive. Why do I say this? Well, because at an MSRP of $999 the Tribute is the same price as the Special Tribute DC, which may appear to be the same level of guitar, but the DC version has the bigger scratchplate because it has a “swimming pool” routing underneath and the pickups and electronics are scratchplate mounted which makes manufacture quicker and therefore cheaper (which is the reason Leo Fender did essentially the same thing with his Strat from the beginning). There is a valid reason for a price differential between the DC and SC versions of the Special Tribute and I’d suggest for the SC Tribute to therefore be a little more expensive as a result.
jgenoese Haha. I know what you mean. Between the TV yellow “proper” one and one of these white Tributes I’d have to go with the Tribute, but that’s mainly because I’m a bit weird and have never really liked TV yellow and think the white is stunning. But if it were the cherry “proper” model or a white Tribute I’d find it a much harder decision. I can’t help thinking that at these prices I could buy the Tribute, get a hard case, upgrade the wiring harness and possibly the pickups, and still have spent less than for the “proper” Special, and I quite like the satin finishes so that would be no hardship.
Finally bought an 'as new' 2009 Cherry Special (it had been more or less hidden amongst dozens of other Gibsons in the flagship). It has the tune-o-matic bridge which makes me feel a safer re: fine tuning . . . matte finish. USD 800. Really enjoying it, feels like maybe Gibson's answer to a Tele in terms of the edginess it has on tap.
There's something about the Gibsons, guessing it's down to the building process, but they always just seem to have that little extra to them over the Epiphones.
It's the pickups. Gibson is the king of humbuckers. Everything else is comparable in build quality, but Epi has exponentially better QA. Nitro laquer is overrated. Its better than poly but still toxic as hell. Dyed/stained is far better than auto paint finishes.
@@yargnad its not the pickups. Its the lacquer. Pickups are a simple device and epiphone uses the exact same designs. Anyone can make a good pickup, as you cant even tell the difference between a cheap and expensive pickup. Because there is no difference.
For roughly $200 more you can get the regular Les Paul Tribute. Carved Maple top, stop bar tail piece with Nashville bridge., trapezoid fret inlays, nicer finishes and a very nice soft case. Much better deal.
Jack Parrish here... I had a '58 Jr. and as a kid and I wanted a Les Paul Custom and I couldn't afford it so I had a guy in the GSO area ( '73ish ) put some Humbuckers.. a '57 at the neck and the new Dimarcio distortion at the bridge... He put a switch so I could split the bridge one... I had to sell it in the central Florida area because I wore it out... Now Gibson puts out a similar one that I had... I will get one if it's the last Guitfiddle I get in my life... You can hear it on RUclips with a band I played in Venezuela called " YARE " and the piece is called " AMANCER ".. I have over 750Mgps of original music at The Library of Congress that I've recorded all instrumentals.. I tell a story with my fingers... You can go to www.soundcloud.com and look up " The Jack Parrish Band " and listen to some of my music...
I love to see you playing with such joy! I start to miss Rob and Bea shredding across the universe. Will they come back? Hope to see you all play together again. Stay healthy!
I got one of those double cut specials on their way out for $599 usd! The fret ends are a little sharp and the switch is garbage, butI guess that's what you get for buying a demo guitar at guitar center. The neck pup is pretty dark, but the p90 in the bridge absolutely rocks, and for $600 (when it was normally $1000) is an absolute steal. Couldn't be happier
I got one for £599 reduced new recently its a beauty and i love the more toned down look of it, the pickups are definitely hotter/gnarly but in a good way, the tone control can allow for a very nice range of sounds. The smaller sizing makes it feel comfortable to play for an extended time.
Ditto - got the same colour (Natural Walnut although it's mahogany of course) - looks great though and very well finished and set up. Sounds are exactly what you'd expect and with great sustain. To answer the question below, I'd describe the neck as pretty chunky in the hand (much more substantial than my G&L Legacy Tribute) but I like that. £599 for a USA made Les Paul was an absolute steal (and the gig bag is really nice too).
This seems really pricey especially since you had those 50's and 60's LP Studio Tributes with full-on tunomatic hardware, carved tops, and period-correct tuners for the same price only a few years ago.
thr3ddy You do know (primarily because of Brexit - since the vote and the uncertainty) that the exchange rate has significantly worsened in those few years for us Brits buying foreign made products (especially those from the US because of the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate). We can’t expect any manufacturer to absorb foreign exchange movements I’m afraid. 🤷🏼♂️ To put specifics to this the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate is 19.7% worse for us right now than it was the day before the Brexit referendum, and therefore even ignoring the additional effects of inflation a US guitar price from mid 2016 would be 20% more expensive now. Or looking at it another way, these £899 guitars at the old exchange rate (again ignoring the extra effects of inflation) would have been £749 guitars in early to mid 2016.
I don't like carved tops, don't like tuneomatic bridges and the vintage style tuners arent so great. PRS got rid of the tuneomatic bridge for a reason... It's absolute garbage.
yarg nad Oh, you mean the tuneomatic bridge that PRS still uses variants of on some of its guitars, such as the McCarty 594 models? 😜 Let’s be frank... PRS doesn’t use a tuneomatic style bridge on most of their guitars because most of their guitars are equipped with modern vibrato systems, and you just can’t do that well in conjunction with a tuneomatic style bridge. What bridge did Paul opt for when building his ultimate guitar tribute to one of his mentors, Ted McCarty, the McCarty 594... yep, his own version of a tuneomatic.
@@davidburke2132 PRS only uses the tune-o-matic on McCarty for vintage enthusiasts of the man himself. Most PRS models use the compensated wraparound. Any PRS nut will tell you its far better than the ABR. Hands down. besides you wouldn't need a tune-o-matic bridge if Gibson could just properly locate the posts to begin with, like PRS does. You can pick up your consolation prize at the door.
The easy answer is that for most people yes, absolutely, that Les Paul is worth the money. I am reserving my first Gibson purchase for a totally crazy one off custom shop order in the next year or so. Love you guys, keep the excellent videos coming!
I have a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Jr. Special (Humbucker), and it is an insanely sounding and playing guitar. I bought brand new from GC, for only $415 USD after taxes. It's Basically the same as the Ebony one Danish Pete has; except mine has a stopbar tailpiece and Nashville TOM bridge, mahogany neck (bound) and body, Baked Maple fretboard, with Gibson Vintage kluson-style tuners. The pickups are 490R/490T.
So Pete is saying get the Gibson... I agree. I have a 2011 studio tribute and I love the fact that I don’t worry about fingerprints on a gloss finish. Also something about the headstock and Knowing it’s made in Nashville sold me.
Looks Good but the a double Cut grew on me. I actually recently got one since they were on clearance. It rocks! Definitely more than you expect from such a simple guitarr
@@nathanjmartin19 some were kind of square and that turned me off to them but then the one I ended up buying showed nice shape and round profile but still large and full, you would have to check em out your self

i bought mine for 800 from GC last year and then sold it on reverb a few months later. it wasnt a bad guitar... just uninspiring. Bought another strat instead =p
You really shouldn’t compare products from America/ Asia /Europe by looking at the price tag. There is a reason why they can sell it hundreds of dollar less in China / Indonesia. Thats why i took all my money and bought me a tribute. No binding , no bling bling, but still a really nice sound and better feelings for me. I love my tribute LP.
Certainly rocked out at the end lads, very nice. I'd like a DC Special, faded ebony, P90's & tuneomatic bridge & tailpiece please, oh, and the money to buy one.
What’s the tuning stability like? I’ve owned a handful of expensive Les Pauls in my life and they sound great but couldn’t ever stay in tune. Has anyone else experienced this, or did I just have bad luck with Gibson’s?
It's a pretty well documented issue. My Les Paul would go way out of tune from a single bend, until I started lock wrapping, like this -> ruclips.net/video/unZ5ut9M4q0/видео.html
Every epiphone ive tried from 2020 on has needed a fret leveling. Part of why im looking at the special is a regular lp hurts my back. Also i live in the US so i should invest in the place i live
You guys are awesome for continuing your channel! I learn alot about new guitars coming up. Would still love to order the Purple Squier Bullet Tele (Danish Pete edition) but not sure the shipping is worth it from the UK to the USA. :). Thanks again.
I have the Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute in white with the humbuckers and it’s awesome. Very comfortable and sounds great. I also have a TV Yellow Studio that is also fantastic. As much as Epiphone’s are really improved I suppose it’s up to your budget and if you want your Epiphone to look like a high end Gibson.
For me, it’s Gibson. If the budget is even close, I’ll take the bottom if the range Gibby instead of the full-glam Epi. A lot of it is the finish. That thin lacquer, for me, sounds superior to a poly finish on an Epiphone. I do own a fully glamourized Epiphone with upgraded hardware and pickups. But still. I’d rather have a cheap Gibson.
What about fret ends? Are they finished properly or are they sharp? I don't believe this model has binding of any sort to cover them. I bought one of the double cut Tributes earlier this year when they were marked down but the frets were pretty rough so I returned it.
I cant help myself from wanting the Gibson....I just bought this guitar and absolutely love it
I have the White P-90 and there is definitely some special Nashville magic in this guitar.

Kind of.
Same here, Epi headstocks are the reason I mostly avoid them
These begining jams are my ringtones and alarm tones
No better ringtone than some good old Rock n Roll... 😉
I just found one NOS an authorized dealer. I bought it . Neck is great and it’s a guitar I can gig with without worrying about it . Just a fun guitar
Im a Gibson man now…😜
Is it P90 for 90 cycle hum?
Danish Pete, I dig your new challenge! I'm a Gibson guitar guy. But that tv yellow Epiphone is making my knees week
Cant wait for the shoutout looking foward to buy the tv yellow epiphone or the white gibson
Stay tuned for the video! 🤘
I have White P-90. There is some magical about it.
Oscar Sierra Yeah, and Epiphone them selves don't even sell those ultra-cheap guitars anymore (unless you buy a starter-pack) I personally don't mind them though, just wish they would have made a tribute LP Junior
danthetanfanman cries in batwing sg
I went and tried the dc and left with it ($699)because they are sweet guitars! These play and sound good to me! Better than my Epi for certain. Try one out and enjoy! To each their own though! And ya $999 isn’t cheap but inflation has been rocking since 2008 unfortunately.
Yes please do an epiphone vs low end gibson vs les paul special! I have been on the fence about a p90 guitar and would love to see that comparison.
Stay tuned & we will see what we can do! 🤘
Missed an edit when The Captain was talking about the neck. I like it!
Thanks to the production team for the chapters :)
Excellent review a always guys....So the question is.....This white tribute les paul or the Gretsch 5220 double cut jet all natural?!....
This video really brings out the difference in tone between humbuckers and the legendary P90's.
I totally get it! I know that rationally the headstock shouldn't really matter, but man...it's just not the same looking up and seeing Epiphone.
That's pretty much my feeling as well. There are some great Epiphones but they've always left me wanting something more.
I bought the White one. It’s a pleasure to play, sounds great.
they seem like theyre just les paul specials you can get for way cheaper if you dont mind missing out on tv yellow
Lloyd Toh also neck binding and the different color Gibson logo. 500 bucks more lol.
jgenoese Ok, the price differential is pretty big, but to be fair if you look at the detail of the differences you start to understand a little better why that may be:
- it’s not just a different colour Gibson logo! Lol. The one on these guitars is silk screened (basically painted on!) whereas on the “full fat” model it’s the proper Gibson inlay;
- these guitars have the open-pore satin nitro finish whereas the proper Specials have a full gloss nitrocellulose finish. This is significantly more time consuming, and therefore more expensive, to do, especially at US labour rates;
- neck binding... this is a manual task. Again, US labour costs make this a more expensive additional feature than you might think (some other US manufacturers either don’t offer binding options at all or they usually only do them in a very limited availability on their higher up models, e.g. PRS and Fender);
- the “proper” model comes with a Gibson hard case rather than the gig bag; and
- general higher quality of components across the board, as implied by things such as nickel hardware vs chrome and the wiring harness specs.
David Burke I’m not sure if you are talking me into the special or the tv yellow one 😆 I think the white one looks fantastic
jgenoese Haha.
It's a great guitar! I own it It's just two years, and I Love it so much!...
Its nitrocellulose lacquer. I own gibsons and epiphones and the difference is all in the lacquer, and maybe in glue or something too idk.
It's the pickups. Gibson is the king of humbuckers. Everything else is comparable in build quality, but Epi has exponentially better QA.
Nitro laquer is overrated. Its better than poly but still toxic as hell. Dyed/stained is far better than auto paint finishes.
Twan Theunisz yeah the finish on the Gibsons always feels a little nicer and less gloopy
@@yargnad Might depend on the pickups, I've had epi's with gibson pups and still prefer a Gibson
Exactly and that's what I'm about to do
Jack Parrish here...
Glad you enjoyed the video, Rob & Rabea will be back on Andertons TV soon! 🤘
@@andertons thank you for the answer!
Had two 2017 Tributes, great guitars, kept my satin gold, got Burst Buckers, great guitar.
Can you tell me something about the neck width? Is it smaller than standards as well?
Damn, I just wrote the same thing. I should have read more comments first.
thr3ddy You do know (primarily because of Brexit - since the vote and the uncertainty) that the exchange rate has significantly worsened in those few years for us Brits buying foreign made products (especially those from the US because of the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate). We can’t expect any manufacturer to absorb foreign exchange movements I’m afraid. 🤷🏼♂️
To put specifics to this the Dollar to Sterling exchange rate is 19.7% worse for us right now than it was the day before the Brexit referendum, and therefore even ignoring the additional effects of inflation a US guitar price from mid 2016 would be 20% more expensive now.
Thanks for jumping hurdles to get the vids out! Cheers Guys!!
Been waiting for this review
Thanks for tuning in!
What's the neck like? Are they square? I assume you mean the dual p90 version. Thanks!
@@nathanjmartin19 some were kind of square and that turned me off to them but then the one I ended up buying showed nice shape and round profile but still large and full, you would have to check em out your self
Thanks guys for the great demo. I have not owned a Gibson guitar is 20 years. I might just take a chance on the P90 version.
Id got for the natural wood version. I like the clean, no nonsense look
I might try one. Love the vids it keeps my spirits up in this time.
Man, I'm really starting to think Gibson is wearing out that ”Tribute" title.
Captain tearing it up at the end there! Get after it!
What’s pickups are better for country style music such as the classics like brooks and Dunn and that. P90s or humbuckers
That white Les Paul with P90s leaves me drooling.
Steve Barker I have one and it just feels great to play. The range of tone is diverse . The finish is just sweet and feel awesome.
@@vincentcabral1173 Its a lovely sounding and looking guitar, unfortunately for me I bought a 50's standard and not currently looking to be castrated from my missus from buying another guitar........yet lol
I love Pete's idea! I am in the market for a p90 gibson/ Epiphone I want the shootout!! Love the vid!!
Hold crap, I just checked the serial number and I have the humbucker Special the captain played. So cool 😂 wish I was a good haha.
Always Bringin The Best Videos 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
The riff never gets old.
i bought mine for 800 from GC last year and then sold it on reverb a few months later. it wasnt a bad guitar... just uninspiring.
I like the double-cut P90, I'd like to try one
You guys should do a compilation of every time in any episode Lee has done the Lee Lick 😂😂😂 That should be a strong 20 minute video lol
And they should make new intro music heavily featuring the Captain lick!

Da-da-di-dadum... Diiiii... X 10000000000
Thank you for letting me participate in the joke kind person.
There's something about that natural finish that gets me going!
What was that drive pedal Cap? I’ve got same pups in my LP and I want that tone!
All of The Captain's Pedals can be found here: www.andertons.co.uk/captain-andertons-rig
Hope That Helps! 🤘
The brown one with the humbuckers for me, looks and sounds great.
Happy New Year From Japan😃
Are these coming back in production ?
Every epiphone ive tried from 2020 on has needed a fret leveling. Part of why im looking at the special is a regular lp hurts my back. Also i live in the US so i should invest in the place i live
You guys are awesome for continuing your channel! I learn alot about new guitars coming up. Would still love to order the Purple Squier Bullet Tele (Danish Pete edition) but not sure the shipping is worth it from the UK to the USA. :). Thanks again.
Nice guitars, but I'm happy with my Schecter Banshee-7 Extreme.
Really good video. I love it.
I wanted to love this guitar so much but just didn’t had it for several months then sold it. Back to my lovable Classic Vibe Tele.
Bought one of these due to this video. Love how it plays and sounds w p90's and slim neck.
These are currently £599 on Guitar Guitar... does that make a difference in the calculation vs an Epi?
For me, it’s Gibson. If the budget is even close, I’ll take the bottom if the range Gibby instead of the full-glam Epi.
A lot of it is the finish. That thin lacquer, for me, sounds superior to a poly finish on an Epiphone.
I do own a fully glamourized Epiphone with upgraded hardware and pickups. But still. I’d rather have a cheap Gibson.
Alright... THIS IS HOW a review/intro to a guitar should be!!
Can you replace the scratchplate with the proper one? Will it fit without any modification?
someone needs to make a 10 hour video of the captain playing his lick
Don’t encourage him.
I wish they'd re-issue the Marauder
Chronicles of Bap we make a Marauder style guitar!
What about fret ends? Are they finished properly or are they sharp? I don't believe this model has binding of any sort to cover them. I bought one of the double cut Tributes earlier this year when they were marked down but the frets were pretty rough so I returned it.
where's the shootout!!!! Have you been able to get the Epi 59 at your shop to do this comparison?
Dear Captain, the LP Double Cut is the most comfortable guitar of Gibson line, why don't you like??? By the way your videos are great, regards!!!
I have the 2016 version in Cherry. Same except it has a gloss finish and a bound fingerboard. Also considerably cheaper then these models. I love it.
And it’s heavier. And it’s got burstbucker pro pickups. And two piece bridge. Both are rock machines
