I love how Pete says I don’t like that, honesty in videos is everything. I’ve been watching Anderton’s since 2012 and still get excited when I see a new video up!
I've got an Epi LP Studio, which I paid $550 for in 2022. Absolutely love it, super comfy and plays great. I'm a novice so I know my opinion doesn't mean much. But for me playing at home, it's really nice and I enjoy it. Also love my Epi LP Special.
I too am in your range, price range and possibly ability range too. But there’s something about epi Les Paul’s that I don’t find comfortable. I do love my Coronet though!
Most guitar players are novices so your opinion is the most important. And you also happen to be correct. Your guitar was a good deal and they should still be at this price point.
I was fortunate to have an opportunity to get the Modern Lite. It really surpassed my expectations and I like it a lot…the weight reduction and thinner body are 🤟
haha Pete's reaction to the price tells everything :) They removed the expensive finish, hardware etc to cut the price down, but they add the push/pull system which make the cost higher than simple electronics ... and honestly, who really use the push pull feature? :) they are expensive cheap les paul guitars, I'd be patient and look on second hand market for higher range LP for cheaper price. Great demo guys, as usual!
Another good play would be to buy a lightly used 2020-23 Les Paul Studio. They are excellent and can be found for between $500 to 1000.00 less (In Canada).
It's even worse than that. The pots would cost nothing for you to implement yourself. 40 bucks at most. For Gibson (not switching pots, mass installing them, buying them in bulk, etc), it's negligible. Also they've added them multiple guitars in the past (mostly between 2015 and 2018) without it causing cost increases. So it's not established to drive up cost.
The Modern Lite seems pretty cool, because it offers something people actually want (a lighter LP with simple, straightforward features and humbuckers). The Studio feels a bit like a guitar without a purpose...you can likely find a used LP Standard for the same price or close. And why offer a heel access cut, but then not do a tummy-cut? I dig the Modern Lite though. I could definitely see myself with one of those.
True loving it, it reminds me a lot of the song Aline by christophe (especially the Philippe Katerine version). The chord progression is very close if not the same 😂
I played the Lite and I love it. LOVE IT. But, the paint is a little thick and I wish it was the 490R/490T. If they would change those 2 things it would be perfect. Super resonant, light weight and sounds amazing!
I have a white studio from the same year. I love it. I upgraded the bridge and tailpiece with high quality reliced parts and the knobs. Did you change the pickups yet? I actually love them but i think that some really good pickups would make it sound even more better.
GC had the Modern Lite on sale recently for $799...I purchased one and love it. Great guitar at a great price...really love the weight but it keeps the LP sound we are used to.
Weird, I thought the tribute series was truly awful. Basically a 400$ guitar in every way but the nitro finish and sold to people that bought into Gibson's marketing for 1200$.
Weird to miss a series that the second hand market is full of and that you can still buy in a lot of shops -- they're still available to buy new from Andertons, for example. But woe is me, how do I miss them...
Tribute with perfectly matched 490 T and R is a completely great guitar. I did good getting mine new, and it's not for sale. No drama with all those push pulls.
This comment section shows how you can’t judge anything seeing it online without the feel! I was in the shop over the weekend and played all the Gibsons up to £3k as well as some PRS and Chapman single cuts, and the Modern Studio absolutely demolished all of them for sound and playability. Brilliant guitar and very happy with the purchase!
I have to agree - I went into my local guitar shop last week to look at one of the new Epiphones that everyone has been raving about online (thinking I might offload my 2013 Les Paul Standard and pocket the difference in price as I haven't been playing it that much of late and I could use the cash I'd get back for other things). They just don't sound or feel the same despite the looks. I picked up one of the modern studios for a back to back comparison and it was no contest. It's not just artificial prestige / USA build nostalgia - they're not the same.
100% agree. I bought the modern studio 3 months ago and i never played such a smooth and easy playible guitar. I really love it, even more than my standart.
I think I prefer my 1978 The Paul - all-walnut and massively lighter than the Les Pauls of the day. I bought it back then as my first "proper" electric and it's been amazing despite being a budget model. It's never let me down and I still play it almost everyday. 😎
I have Gibson les Paul Standard and Gibson Les Paul Modern Studio. So I have something to compare it with. Gibson Les Paul Modern Studio sounds better than standard. This is a very successful model.
The modern studio ticks a lot of boxes of what I’m looking for in a Les Paul. Sold my standard which was a great sounding and looking guitar because it was so ridiculously heavy. Got a wine red modern studio on the way. Can’t wait!
Like I said in another platform - Epiphone and Gibson will only move customers away if this pricing will continue. You could buy a custom build guitar by lots of luthiers for the price of a nice looking gibson (like traditional, classic, standard) and you could buy a great PRS / Suhr / ESP/LTD for that.
In 2017 the Gibson Les Paul Faded was 700€ new and it's almost the same as a Studio. I bought it used for 350€. Feels and plays like the big boys. Best deal of he century!
ekhem, you can get a Gibson SG standard for that price. With binding, trapezoid inlays, locking grover tuners, API aluminum tailpiece, 61R and 61T pickups, and a hard shell case with a gibson strap and tool.
i have a 1987 les paul custom lite, and i had a smartwood exotic and the thing i love about both of them is that they kind of combined the SG with the les paul. first off, they're thin, but also the neck is an SG profile which always felt a wider and flatter than les pauls. they're super throwable live.
Guys, the guitar they announce as the 'new' (?!) Les Paul modern lite is actually something they produced in 2014, and it's called the 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker! ( And I'm a proud owner of it) Yes, same arch top but slim body with belly cut, same size, same design, same dots on the frets... The only difference is that MM comes with two P90s+ wrap around bridge + vintage tuners (old tuners are far better than the new line up)...A fantastic fantastic guitar in the collection. At the time it was announced, people were laughing to it, because they thought it was a student model, a cheap Gibson, a half breed! Hah, still one of the best guitars I own !! Due to it's reduced weight and arch top, it's comfortable than other LP's I've owned! With P90's, it's raw snappy and angry!! So never listen the people around you, go and try, and if you like it, grab it! Believe me ,it will be valuable in future and maybe you'll won't let it go and keep because it's a good axe! I'm just surprised that no one reviewing this guitar is aware of the past models or the history of Gibson models, so that's the lack of knowledge nowadays... So If you want an original USA made instrument, a real Gibson, don't even think about it's slim body etc or to the "lite" label on it...Sound and playibility wise no it 's not a lite guitar! The only thing annoying me is it's price tag. Even with the high inflation around the world in all countries, I still believe this guitar should be in 1200$/€ price range...I now understand that the new Gibson CEO wants to direct the players with low budget to Epi line up, and if somebody wants a Gibson label on her/his guitar, he/she must pay min. 1499 or more, that's the new rule...Time will show if this strategy is correct or wrong,we'll see..
I love watching you guys. I just got the Modern Studio Red Wine Satin and I love it. $1999 is a lot. Ask for a discount. I got mine for $1699. It's really nice. One of my forever guitars.
ABSOLUTELY TRUE AND CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!! The majority of the sound, like 85 to 95% of it, comes from the player; Brian May's guitar tech, Pete malindrone, said that in the video a good while back! When he's setting up Brian's equipment, and plays his guitar, he sounds like him, and not like Brian; when Brian plays it, it sounds like Brian!!!!!!!!!!
I've got a 1997 LP Studio, back when they were literally a LP Standard without the binding and inlaid logo. I did a straight swap for a guitar that stood me at £235, so I don't expect to find a deal like that again anytime soon. It's got a 500T and 496R, replacement Grover tuners, is the same colour as Pete's in this video - but looks like it's been chewed by a pack of wild dogs - it sounds like a monster with 10 - 52 strings, and I love the fuck out of it. The earlier 90's Studios had ebony fingerboards, but mine is just rosewood. Forget Epiphone, try and find a 90's Studio.
Currently in the market for a higher end les paul and I've always wanted a Gibson Les Paul standard. Yet I'm going with a Maybach Lester which is cheaper than the new les paul standards and sounds and feels better to me.
Paul Reed Smith is in the business of selling high end "wood library" works of art. Of course he would say fancy wood makes a difference. How else could he justify charging 5k for a hunk of wood?
I must be out of touch with new epiphone prices but when Lee said it was the same price as an epiphone i assumed sub £700, then i looked at the price before the video ended 😮😮😮 ill stick to my Les Paul tribute and Patrick Eggle that combined cost less
Speaking of Peter Green... His legendary out of phase pickup position... Will you ever do a review of the different Brian May red special guitars? And there appears to be quite a few available currently!
I own a 2001 Les Paul Studio Plus And it’s best thing that happened in my life. And it’s basically A Standard without binding and headstock inlay It’s was amazing but this I don’t know what it is but definitely not a Studio
I love many Gibson guitars and their sounds, including the ES-335, of which I own two models. But I hate the company's pricing policy, which I think is outrageous and completely excessive. As soon as they launch new models on the market, we can assume that the guitars have become more expensive again. Many manufacturers have proven that this doesn't have to be the case. That's why I say clearly and unequivocally: Adieu Gibson! Greetings from Germany Mic
@@frankcarter6427 Hi, Frank! I absolutely agree with you! I don't understand why so many guitarists (rightly) moan about Gibson's astronomical prices, but at the end of the day buy another overpriced Les Paul. As long as the majority of guitarists throw their money, for which they had to work hard, into the insatiable maw of this US company, they need not be surprised if Gibson continues to raise prices in the future. This buying behavior is completely irrational for me, especially as we musicians are not doing ourselves any (financial) favors. On the contrary: we are supporting this outrageous price hike. I will keep my two ES-335 models, but I will not buy another Gibson as long as this company does not offer a reasonable price-performance ratio for its guitars. There are so many first-class guitar manufacturers offering affordable instruments these days that fortunately you no longer have to rely on Gibson (and Fender). Greetings from Germany Mic
@@frankcarter6427 Okay - then a warm greeting from the "wild" Teutons to the county of South Yorkshire 😉 What did Lord Voldemort say in the last part of the Harry Potter films before the attack on Hogwarts? "They learn nothing ..." A statement that unfortunately also applies to the majority of guitarists when it comes to legendary brands. It's unbelievable that Lee has never read a Harry Potter movie or the books by J. K. Rowling. Here in Germany, her books are still an absolute cult, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've read them all several times, even though I'm just a Muggle. 🙃 CU
I prefer these LPs. Sleek and stripped down. I’ve always liked the neck and tone but never liked the weight and how the traditional Les Pauls feel. I’m going to try these. Thanks.
I've just been hunting after discontinued Magnatone Super 59 amps. I've already got my Gibson Les Pauls. Just found the chosen amp. The point is, you dont have to pay crazy prices to find the one. Dont settle for an over priced studio
Go to be honest, an LTD EC-1000 is something like 2/3 the price of the Modern Lite and half the price of the Modern Studio, and a better buy any way I look at it.
Modern lites are great. I demoed one for a week and found it to be almost like a Les paul shaped SG. It is extremely light and has a VERY think neck. I prefer a thicker neck personally, and still thought this guitar was easy to play. They will be a great value used in a few years.
My 1982 Les Paul Deluxe is a lovely guitar, but weighs close to 11 pound. At 62 I'm now cautious about playing it standing up for fear that it'll snap me like a fuckin' Kit-Kat. These lighter models look like a safer bet 😅
Check out the Les Paul Less+. I own a 2015 model and it looks just like an LP Standard but thinner. The LP Custom Lite is nice too (if you can find one at a reasonable price)
But I want a bound neck! Even a Les Paul Special has a bound neck, and that was originally a budget model. For me the lack of a bound neck is the deal breaker.
Time for negative followed by positive comment review on this guitar (I have tried one). Does it sound like a les Paul? No. Doesn’t sound good? Yes. Is it worth $14-1500? No. Would it be for $1000 or less? Yes. It kind of sounds like a les Paul and sg had a baby.
I paid $2000 for my Gibson 1994 Les Paul Standard in 1995 and that was a lot back then. American guitar prices are crazy high now. Fender just increased their prices just recently as well. Outrageous! Who’s buying them anymore? Are they starting to price themselves out of the market?
@@tonedowne if only our pay has reflected inflation. However yes it was a lot, after taxes that is, and I’m not surprised to hear your response, I considered it. No offense of course.
@@a.andrewhussey6403 None taken. So long as Gibson keep the quality up, I think the prices for the standards are historically ok. Only difference is that now there are so many really great guitars out there for significantly less money, that it makes the spend on a Gibson harder to justify. And these cut down Lite LPs being more expensive than the fully formed Tributes they are replacing, is not a move in the right direction. The expensive Epiphones are pure lunacy though.
I think they have. I doubt people will really pay these prices. Sales everywhere. Evvvverywhere. Gibsons whole range actually took a step down in quality and up in price at the same time. I can’t believe people are praising them post the 2018 bankruptcy
On the Modern Lite, since the body is so thin, does that mean that there’s no chambering at all? If that’s the case, then this is appealing to me. It would almost be like a Les Paul-shaped SG.
one thing , that Modern Studio no body binding , but got fretboard binding ,just black binding ,so you harder to see , and Modern lite got matching headstock , gibson never did on regular production guitar if my memory correct, and studio LP discontinued.
For me, Gibson and Epiphone priced themselves out of the market. For 1500-2000 bucks you can get a Maybach or Eastman LP all day, which are way better than any of the Gibson Standard models.
I played a modern lite. It's a lot easier to get high up on the neck with the body being so thin - and the body is thin. Sounded great. It also stayed in tune better than any Gibson I've ever played.
I have the impression that everyone agrees, the price of these products is not appropriate. The competition offers much more interesting things in this price range, I think we will move on. Furthermore, to my ears and despite the quality of the equipment used to record the video, they don't sound that good.
Im still kicking myself for not buying a Gibson Melody Maker for 399!!! Brand spanking new Usa built for 399 quid!! I went to see The Libertines at the time and Carl Barrat was reckon one on stage! There now fetching 700 quid 2nd hand!!! It was the dog ear p90 with an adjustomatic bridge and no pick guard. There were 3 colours available, red, black or tv yellow and it was a really cool open pore, satin, nitro lacquer. Aargh!!!
For those who may cry "bUt InFlaTiOn." Based on the Inflation Calculator from Bank of England, £700 in 2027 is around £890.44 as of Jan 2024. So, no it's not all inflation that's pushing Gibson prices.
I do like that blue/green one that Lee is playing. If these had been an option when I first started playing then maybe I’d still own a LP. As for high-end Epi vs low-end Gibson, my choice has been low-end Gibson, but mainly because I liked the style of the guitars. Both the LP that I sold and the SG that replaced it have been stained wood finishes which I really like. Fancy finishes can be nice but there’s something about being able to see the wood that appeals to me. I think my SG is now 10 years old to put this in context, it’s a keeper but if I was buying today it might well not be Gibson or Epi
I love how Pete says I don’t like that, honesty in videos is everything. I’ve been watching Anderton’s since 2012 and still get excited when I see a new video up!

These look and sound awesome!!! I like the lite ones. Kinda like my ec-1000 and studio had a baby. I’ll take one indeed.
Was very disappointed the Studio didn't come in gloss ebony. Would already have one if they did.
The LP Studio Lite is a stone cold gigging & recording delight.
there is no lp studio lite its the modern lite or the studio
I own a 2001 Les Paul Studio Plus
And it’s best thing that happened in my life.
And it’s basically A Standard without binding and headstock inlay
It’s was amazing but this I don’t know what it is but definitely not a Studio
This probably needed to be priced
I love many Gibson guitars and their sounds, including the ES-335, of which I own two models. But I hate the company's pricing policy, which I think is outrageous and completely excessive. As soon as they launch new models on the market, we can assume that the guitars have become more expensive again. Many manufacturers have proven that this doesn't have to be the case. That's why I say clearly and unequivocally: Adieu Gibson!

so long as mugs keep paying Gibson prices, they'll continue to sell their junk for ludicrous sums

@@TheRedSpecialPlayer hiya Mic (from Sheffield, N England) utterly agree
Thanks.
Julie Walters played Ron's mum in Harry Potter, but you have to watch She'll Be Wearing Pink Pajamas for her growler.
Outro Jam was pure
🔥
I loved that intro. Great playing as usual. The guitars are nice too.
Is the modern lite not just a Gibson version of the Epiphone lp100 minus the bolt on neck?
I've just been hunting after discontinued Magnatone Super 59 amps. I've already got my Gibson Les Pauls. Just found the chosen amp. The point is, you dont have to pay crazy prices to find the one. Dont settle for an over priced studio
Go to be honest, an LTD EC-1000 is something like 2/3 the price of the Modern Lite and half the price of the Modern Studio, and a better buy any way I look at it.
Those get pretty expensive pretty quickly if you buy the ones with good pickups.
@@tonedowne All pickups sound the same once you kick the metal zone on.
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t Very true
Modern lites are great. I demoed one for a week and found it to be almost like a Les paul shaped SG. It is extremely light and has a VERY think neck. I prefer a thicker neck personally, and still thought this guitar was easy to play. They will be a great value used in a few years.
And the best ever outro jam
That Gold Mist Devil is damn cool looking.
Great Video!! Great Playing! Great Guitars! Really enjoyed this vid!!
@@ThePedroDB Thanks for the pointer
I like the middle position with the neck PU split. That's the only split I use.
It's like the PRS S2 for Gibson. Pretty sweet
But I want a bound neck! Even a Les Paul Special has a bound neck, and that was originally a budget model. For me the lack of a bound neck is the deal breaker.
Love that version of Creep!!!
I would honestly take my Epi 1959 over either of those. I don’t even think I would buy a Standard at this point.
I have a 60s standard (2012), which I love, but where necks are concerned, is it more to do with what you are used to?
Time for negative followed by positive comment review on this guitar (I have tried one). Does it sound like a les Paul? No. Doesn’t sound good? Yes. Is it worth $14-1500? No. Would it be for $1000 or less? Yes. It kind of sounds like a les Paul and sg had a baby.
I like that cardinal red, and the gold mist!
Do a reaction video of Lee and Pete watching Crossroads. I can't believe Lee has not seen it. Best guitar movie ever
I paid $2000 for my Gibson 1994 Les Paul Standard in 1995 and that was a lot back then. American guitar prices are crazy high now. Fender just increased their prices just recently as well. Outrageous! Who’s buying them anymore? Are they starting to price themselves out of the market?
Isn't that about the same adjusted for inflation? $2000 was a lot of money in 1995
@@tonedowne if only our pay has reflected inflation.
Why do I think EPIPHONE with a GIBSON LOGO ? New EPIPHONES catching up on Price too
My 1990s Epiphone literally has a Gibson truss rod cover... it's just branding, you're 100% correct.
I have an Epiphone Gothic, which is basically what the Lite is. Epiphone have been doing that cut down body for a long time.
Man what an intro!! Unreal!
On the Modern Lite, since the body is so thin, does that mean that there’s no chambering at all? If that’s the case, then this is appealing to me. It would almost be like a Les Paul-shaped SG.
No chambering. It's a mahogany solidbody (as per Gibson's website description).
Molly sends Ron a “howler”
Oh man, Monty Python reference was spot-on. :D
one thing , that Modern Studio no body binding , but got fretboard binding ,just black binding ,so you harder to see , and Modern lite got matching headstock , gibson never did on regular production guitar if my memory correct, and studio LP discontinued.
Intro reminded me of Ain't it the Life
Same!
For me, Gibson and Epiphone priced themselves out of the market. For 1500-2000 bucks you can get a Maybach or Eastman LP all day, which are way better than any of the Gibson Standard models.
If I wanted a "cheap" Gibson I would go for one of the Tribute series which I think costs less than either of these. Go figure.
Right on the spot. These ones looks like toys.
These look fantastic!
And the guitars as well!
A lightweight guitar is not just for people with bad backs. One can be more expressive on a guitar that can be wielded easily.
Am I crazy or is the Les Paul Modern Lite essentially just an SG?
Most guitars are defined by the completely arbitrary shape of the body, so "yes" I guess!
Do these have a neck dive problem?
No...I have both and not even close in feel...
I played a modern lite. It's a lot easier to get high up on the neck with the body being so thin - and the body is thin. Sounded great. It also stayed in tune better than any Gibson I've ever played.
Beautiful intro gents! Kinda sounded like “Creep” by Radiohead
I have the impression that everyone agrees, the price of these products is not appropriate. The competition offers much more interesting things in this price range, I think we will move on. Furthermore, to my ears and despite the quality of the equipment used to record the video, they don't sound that good.
I remember when the faded Studio was £700. Back in the old days of 2017-2018.
I've already seen the lites been reduced to a grand l, I don't like colours or lack of pickup covers
And they were still only worth half that, probably the worst Gibson ever made.... And they've made a lot of overpriced turds.
Great intro!
I’d get the tele
The question should be: is a "streamlined" Gibson Les Paul actually a Les Paul?
Sorry guys, grab your self an Eastman or Maybach, higher quality components and still light, prices for Gibson are becoming too expensive
Wow sick intro jam
It's "creep" by radiohead
Great intro jam guys!
It's "creep" by radiohead
*Designed for exorbitant profit.
Does ANYONE use push pulls, I had them in two guitars never ever used them, then one of the push pull pots died and I had to put real pots in it
Not for me, I'll stick to Sire guitars. Great video though guys! Thanks
Was that the first-ever cover-version intro jam?
kinda haha Creep cover
Albatross was played on a Strat, not a LP
