Still, you have to accept that even without the RTX stuff, HL2 still look amazing TWENTY YEARS after its's release. It is a testament to great art direction.
half life 2 is beautiful, its insane how this came out in 2004. and didnt even need an extremely high end pc either, due to how optimized it is. source engine was way ahead of its time.
I'm actually a big fan of these RTX remixes on older games or even games with more simpler graphics like quake RTX. I've noticed with new games a lot of the little lighting, and shadow details on objects is lost when a game's objects and textures are very detailed. In quake RTX you get to really see how detailed the lighting and shadows are with Ray tracing since the levels and objects consist of flat faces with simpler textures. You can see all the details of how light and colors bounce off objects and project onto other objects.
Back then game textures although low res, had plenty of contrast which makes details noticeable from a distance. Most modern games with high res textures have minimal contrast and the detail is only noticeable when you get up close. Lethal Company with it's artstyle makes texture detail very noticeable. It's like when you take a picture IRL and put the "brilliance" slider all the way up in editing.
Great point, remaking every texture and making new models is a much more daring task than coding and implementing a bew lighting system into Source. Isit on source 2 by any chance?

It's nice to see updated visuals but it's surprising how little of a difference it seems to make, at least in this trailer. HL2 stands the test of time.
Yeah, theres a lack of geometry and general detail on the level in relation to the increased resolution of the surfaces. That's something most community-made HD projects get wrong in any game... they increase the resolution but overall the game 'does not support' that much texture detail without true geometric detail to keep up with it, so it looks wrong and flat even tough it has insane resolutions on its textures
This is giving me flashbacks to watching the first tech demos / videos of Half-Life 2 and how they blew me away and here we are again, getting blown away.
I'm playing the original Half Life rn and it's aged extremely well! Graphics aren't everything. The game has aged super well in a gameplay and story sense.
Maybe graphically it aged well but the gameplay hasn't aged well. The gunplay isn't great and most of the puzzles are just "look, we have a physics engine, try stacking some blocks and be amazed!", which granted at the time was amazing, but today not so much.
@@H.Collector There are fps games that have better basic (non-moded) shooting combat against human or humanlike creatures, but the Strider, Gunship and Hunter-Chopper figths, to name a few, are unique and very well done, and so are the atmosphere, level design, soundtrack, animations and more.
@@H.Collector That "HL2 is just a physics showcase" argument comes from Halo/Cod fans who can't handle the fact that HL2 is better than the game they are emotionally attached to.
