  • Vocal Coach Reaction To Metallica - Enter Sandman - Live - Ken Tamplin
    Metallica tears down the Iron Curtain!
    Metallica, formed in 1981, came up during the time of melodic rock. Their unique sound quickly amassed an army of followers in the underground, thrash metal music community. Enter Sandman was released in 1991 on their self-titled album, Metallica, and propelled the band to worldwide mega stardom. In this video, filmed in Moscow 1991, we see the young Russians hungry for crushing, stadium level metal in a stunning example of East meets West. The raw power of the song has even the military police headbanging along with crowd. Metallica’s, Enter Sandman, may have been America’s most effective weapon against the former Soviet Union.

    Check out my version of Enter Sandman where you will learn how to safely achieve the style of James Hetfield adding the Metallica flavor to your singing toolbox. And remember, sleep with one eye open.

    James is a beast vocalist. He is in one of the original bands who birthed "hardcore" metal during the height of the glam metal phase. James as far as his clean singing and technique is a monster. I feel like more could be said for the vocal performance. James doesnt really scream. But his voice can still be very menacing.

True story: there were vendors selling industrial grade earplugs just inside the venue where they were performing advising people that, "This band will make your eardrums explode if you're sitting in the first 8-10 rows." We didn't purchase them, my ears were ringing for weeks!!! Such an awesome band!

I'm pretty sure @Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy has a video up on vocal fry and using your diaphragm to sing those heavy distorted notes "properly". The reason properly is in quotations is because there is actually no safe way to sing with rasp or distortion so you have to be careful with it or you could seriously hurt yourself.

    Hi, Ken. Isnt this the gig where they played (upto) 1.6M ppl? I could be wrong but they did at one point.
    I love the intro stories, too. Very cool hearing some stuff prior to the main vid.
    I first heard Metallica in 86. As a kid it blew me away! My cousin put 'Master of Puppets' on a tape for me and also Anthrax's 'Spreading The Disease' album. I listened to them over and over. I soon discovered other bands such as Overkill, Exodus, Megadeth and so on. I got the demin 'battle jacket' with loads of band patches and silver studs. The whole nine yards. I was bullied at school for being "different" but i didnt let it get to me. They had the problem, not me. Im 45 now and still thrashin'! I love all manner of harder rock from thrash, metal, speed, death to doom and goth. Also like some grunge and punk. I have 4 kids, 3 of them are into rock aswell. It gets played nice and loud in the car. My youngest, who's 2, sings along to Linkin Park and A Day To Remember so i guess he will become a rocker, too.
    Anyhow, cheers 🤘🏼😉🤘🏼

    Metallica is the greatest band ever. Followed them since mid 80s here in Ireland . Listen to them daily . You lucky to have seen them as I’m their biggest fan and I’m 41 - never seen them.

    The song is about crib death. Bob Rock mentioned this in an interview. Apparently the lyrics were originally more blunt/graphic and Rock suggested to make them a little more subtle.

    Here's a suggestion from left field...Air Supply - Here I Am (1983). I know it's outside your normal swim lane, but Russell Hitchcock is legit. Flawless execution with no tracks or pitch correction. A lesson for vocalists of any genre.

    Hey Ken, congrats on your success by the way. I notice you said the song was about James Hefields son, well one of the band members sons. They performed this on Howard Stern show and Lars Ulrich said original lyrics for this song was about crib death but they rewrote it to make it about kids nightmares. Not stepping on your toes by no means but thought that was an interesting fact. Also, a reaction to Fly to the Angel's by Slaughter would be great. Mark Slaughtet is a phenomenal vocalist. Keep it real and keep on Rockin bro 🤘

    When I was 8 years old, way back in 1989, we went on a family vacation to Hungary. At that time, it was still a communist country and my parents met this other couple from East-Germany. Really lovely people, their son was my age so we played a lot together. So these East-Germans asked if they could have my dad's Bruce Springsteen casettes he played in his car, because his music (just like the ones you mentioned) was prohibited in their country.

    I have to tell you this story.... My sister and I went to a concert, I think it was all 80's bands, and I was sitting beside a couple of teenagers, maybe 18 or 19 years old (80's music finds new fans everyday), and there was this huge stereo system playing various rock and roll while the guys were setting up for the first band, and this song started playing. I jumped up and said to my sister "I love Metallica " and I was singing like crazy and the boy sitting next to me tapped me and said " you like them? " I said of course, who doesn't? He said to me "I wish you were my mom". I laughed till I cried. I told him thank you, I think that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me. I just loved that and I've never forgotten it. 😁 Side note, Lars is my favorite member of Metallica lol

    • @Tfichtenbaum
      @Tfichtenbaum 5 лет назад +1

      Obviously he never learned to properly sing ....he actually hurt his vocal chords recording the black album because he never learned to sing properly for years ...he just had a natural grit to his voice ...which is why James's voice now sounds so much different then it did back then

    • @tempviduse
      @tempviduse 5 лет назад

      Tiffany Fichtenbaum I think you’re right. Young Hatfield (for whom the bell tolls live) sounded like a little kid when talking but now sounded like he gargles with sand paper. I think he just constricted his throat to make the grit and now he has damaged chords that make his speaking voice rough. I’m not a vocal expert so I don’t know if that’s how it works but I think it does
