Can You Guess These Planes Based ONLY on Engine Noise?

- I recently made a trip to LAX and spent all day spotting at the famed In-n-Out off of runway 24R. There are a million different LAX plane spotting videos out there, so let's try something a little different: do you think you can guess planes based solely off engine noise? I used a shotgun mic to pic up the audio, and stood almost directly beneath the flight path of incoming jets so audio should be as clear as can be.

2:40 that’s an interesting-looking 747-400 right there...
lmao whoops
Yup
whoops whoops PULL UP
A350
2:40 nice 747-400
A350
Landing makes it hard to tell, cos thrust is at almost idle. Take off is 10x better for this, as thrust is almost at 100
Cormac Rohda Actually on short final assuming the aeroplane wasn’t high and fast, the power will tend to sit at around 60%, particularly in large jets like these. It’s complicated to explain in a RUclips comment but it’s what we call the “back side of the power curve” as pilots, where you actually need more power to fly slower. What really makes this video somewhat challenging is the Doppler effect, where the sound waves are inconsistent because at first they are moving toward us, and then after the aircraft passes overhead they now move away from us.
Nice! However, the takeoff sound makes it much easier to distinguish between the planes... Maybe include this in another video? Otherwise, great content!
I didn't know that airbus made 747s
InTeReStInG
Stfu Beethoven you can’t even hear shit
Ah yes, that is a very perfect 747 2:45
I prefer T.O. sound for this test.
Yes please
777 is just such an ironic booming sound. absolutely love it
2:42 747-400?
6!!!! I got most of what I'm used to hearing over my house (with the exception of the B777)... ERJ-175, B757, MD-11, A319, CRJ-200, and B777 Still surprised I didn't get the 737NG! They always surprise me with how loud they are.
3 and the planes I got were the B757, B777, and the MD-11. I thought the 737 engine was an A330! What was I thinking?
My favorite is GEnx. Nice video!
8/9 Dat Ge90 boiiii
2:40 best airbus 747-400 pic!
Only got the 737ng and erj175 right..... Even though i were wrong my favorite sound is the ge90 engine
6/9 and 777 GE90 is a particular favorite, as well as the roar of the A330s.
same
The cf-6 has a lot of roar but the PW4000 is very loud and has a ton of roar.
Damn, managed to get 2/9 pretty bad...
7/9 right I think that’s good! Also quad jets sound the best
My favourite sound is the TF39 of the C-5 Galaxy (old engines)
B-52 P&W TF33s for me. Though I also love the whines of C-5s and KC-135s.
My favorite engine sound is ge90
Suprisingly I only got 737, a319 and 777. Maybe because I have been exposed to those particular sounds so much lately that I forgot what other engines sound like. (I live next to Geneva airport where almost every plane is an Easyjet a319 or a320, and its the only aircraft I have been flying in lately,)
Nice
Different video
I got 6/9
Same results
Space Plus NOICE
Great video - wouldn't have genuinely got any of them but a few lucky guesses.
7 out of 9. Not bad.
LUL! I got 7!
The CRJ 200 don't fly here in Brazil, but is a mid size engine sound...
I glad to match that 787 engine! 🤩🤩
777 is easily identifiable, that engine sound is just a harmony
2 right, that was tough
I could pick out the MD-11 and 777 pretty easily. I like the A321, 757 and MD-11 though lol
I didn’t get the 777 which is surprising bc it’s my favorite plane! I could easily pick out the MD-11 bc it sounded nothing like the other ones.
The "older" GE engines are very distinctive with their whistling sound from the engine core
My Favorite Engine Sounds is the GE90 and the RR Trent XWB Also the RR- RB211, GeNx on the B748i & all the CFM Neo's
You can tell the smaller jets as they pass faster in sound..
4 correct
I got like 4 right and my favorite engines are GE90 777-300ER
Yes
I scored 3/9 correct
Any Rolls Royce RB211 - their sound is unmistakable.
Nobody:
Coby: Can You Guess These Planes Based ONLY on Engine Noise? Let me explain...
I got 2 correct answers anyway. XD The 777, and the MD-11 noise. XD
I got 9! It was still kinda hard because on landing the thrust is nearly idle pls make another one but with takeoff that would be cool good video tho.
I got 5: 777, 737, MD-11, CRJ-200, and E175. Surprised I didn’t get the 757 considering they fly over my house everyday.
I got four right. and I think the 777 might be my favorite.
I got all but 3. I dont know if that is good or not, but I did it! I love the sound of those GE90’s though
Looks like Iberia won't be retiring their 747-400s too soon 😁😁
this is pretty much easy and yay im the second one to comment
The spool up and take of sound tends to be more indicative.
2:56 that particular MD-11 infact has PW4000 engines. Lack of exhaust cone is the easiest giveaway never mind the sound.
6/9
yes
Got 6 right.
Same
I only got three right. the A380, B787, and the B777. I liked the sound of the B777 best.
Don't know how I missed the 737, that's literally about the only plane that flies over my house along with the very rare 747.
I got 4 right and my favourite sound is the engines on a 757
make another one,but with taking off planes
👍
RB211 on departure tho
Isn't it harder to tell what plane by the sound on approach. Engines are almost at idle compared to take off.
It's cuz I know my followers are experts, I don't want to make it TOO easy ;)
I thought Iberia retired their 747s back in 2006...
I think the Boeing 777 has the most beautiful sound
Sometimes
3 and the planes I got were the B757, B777, and the MD-11. I thought the 737 engine was an A330! What was I thinking?
American Airlines sound is my favourite
7 was the only REALLY obvious one.
Ge 90 Startup
Dr. J Plays PH especially when you’re inside the plane 🤤
Got 5 roght, I don't know if that's good or not but I'm proud.
WOW I ended up 8/9 except the A319...
holy crap i got all right
Lol, I just got 3, I need to practice more
6/9 so not bad....
6 of em
777 90 engines sound the best to me.
i got 6 out of 9
Oh
I got 4 correct
Interesting video, but pretty much all engines sound the same at flight idle. Go to the other end and record them at take off and then you will truly test people ;-) At full performance engines sound very very different.
Next time I will!
I got the 737 777 787 A380 and honestly the crj one I felt could almost be any of these planes and the erj 175 was a lucky guess
i got all 9 correct
i got 2 corect the737ng and crj 200
Let me just say.. I did shockingly
1:27 a380 GP7000
Looks like I’m an Aviation nerd I got them all right
Its impossible to say. Only an expert can say the answers.
