I went from 2018 version to 2021, the extra 0.8" are totally worth, and despite the size increase I can still put it into the jeans and jacket pocket. It's specially great if you read pdf, better quality reading better performance flipping pages. Total fan.
Additionally illumination is softer and the option to make it warmth light or dark mode... pretty handy for night time.

I wish they had brought the side page turn buttons back. They were the best. They allowed for one handed usage - very handy if you commute.

That is exactly why I'm hesitating about buying the paperwhite. I invested in a very old kindle about 2 weeks ago, 4th gen. The physical buttons are great, and the only reason I'd need a paperwhite is because of nighttime reading. So I'm still thinking if I should buy it or not

Commuting was a concern for me as well. I did end up getting the paperwhite for my reading at home or when i'm stationary but when I'm riding somewhere I use the kindle app on my phone. One handed and the app is surprisingly excellent.

I use my 5th generation Kindle Paperwhite bought in 2013 all the time.
The battery still charges and lasts a decent time, the only deterioration I sometimes notice is 1 blown pixel in the screen.
Seeing it is almost 9 years old it has been a great purchase and has lead to me reading many (mostly free) books since acquiring it.
I'm on my 2nd case cover for it after the 1st case wore out and maybe this is why it has kept in a good condition despite constant use.
Thanks for posting about the new Paperwhite, whenever my current version finally wears out I will look forward to upgrading to this improved version.

Nice review. I’ve just upgraded from the old paperwhite to the new and the screen size is very noticeable. It’s a wider screen format too which gives a lot more real estate.

The shiny flat screen is a total deal breaker for me. I actually _like_ having a defined border/bezel and the inset display. Kinda feels more like reading a page and not just staring at a tablet. And the flat, paper-like surface of the screen is so easy on the eyes. And it's one less thing to get easily broken. If anything, just put a protector over the screen portion. Still using an OG Kindle Touch 3G DC01200 but desperately want a backlight, yet something with the same durability. 3G connectivity is a huge feature imo my Touch is great for.

Thank you for that great video explanation. I have a 2019 Paperwhite and am considering upgrading to the 2021 version. Two questions I hope you can answer 1) is the new Paperwhite much brighter with the 17 LED lights than the older one which has only 4? I need a very bright screen and this is where my current Kindle is lacking. Secondly, does the new Paperwhite come with those annoying ads? I was able to turn mine off when I bought it but not sure if that can still be done? Thanks again!

Good review thanks, but you did not touch on my pet peeve, which is screen touch sensitivity and responsiveness. Is the new Paperwhite more responsive / faster than my 2018 model? I divide my reading between my Fire and my "older" kindle and of course there is a huge difference in responsiveness.

I live in the banana republic of Colombia. Buying the kindle paperwhite 2021 in my country has a cost of 70% of the average monthly salary of a person. I have the 2019 kindle. It really doesn't make sense for me to invest just for 0.8 inches. Likewise, the warm light only works if you set the brightness to the maximum and what I like the least is the brightness. The pixels in the letter are not noticeable differences in both models. In Colombia, a house with a pool is not normal, so I don't have problems with the water. The dark mode is interesting but I don't usually read much at night. The charger is not important in my case. Conclusion: It is not justified to pay 70% of your monthly salary in Colombia and LATAM for only 0.8 inches.

USB-C is enough of a reason for me to not buy the older models. However, I have bad experience with soft touch surfaces like the new Paperwhite has, they get sticky in a few years. And I would prefer white body. So I'll wait few months more, it will be three years since the old Basic was released. Hopefully we get a new one with USB-C, still in multiple colors, just in time for Prime Day.

    • @trashtrash2169

You must be talking about decade plus old tech, how long would you be using this kindle? I've had the 10th gen, newest is 11th, since close to release, probably two years now, and it will probably last for many more. Rubber and plastic or whatever they use isn't made the same as it was back then, with different mixtures and techniques, Amazon hopefully doesn't cheap out in this area. I find it odd to hold on to past experiences as fact when it comes to things that change frequently, such as mobile computing technology. Even then, a flip phone from back in the day I have has the coating you're talking about and it isn't sticky at all, even while I certainly have made no effort to maintain it.

Could someone fill me in about the differences between the commercials and not commercials versions?
Are commercials invasive or intrusive while reading? Or do you they only appear on the home page like in the previous models?

They make it look like night and day size difference, the actual primitre of the tablet it’s only about half inch difference bigger on the new model but they did a good job in making the screen bigger, so it would fit just as good.
And it’s not heavy by much because it’s only they made an half inch difference on the dimension and they used every available space within the tablet to make the screen bigger so you will notice the screen difference good job.
