- How to possibly FIX your low spongy brake pedal without buying or replacing anything. Soft Spongy brake pedal or low brake pedal? See How to fix it yourself and save time and money. There is an extra step to bleeding the brakes on this vehicle that is commonly overlooked. In most cases you can correct the issue without replacing the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) that the Dealer says you need saving you $500 to $1000 dollars. And in many cases you won't even need to replace the Master Cylinder. But I'll explain how to replace the master cylinder and bleed the brakes Properly. And tell how to possibly fix yours without buying or replacing anything. The Master cylinder is the same for both the Ford Edge and the Lincoln MKX. I had a sinking brake pedal in my 2012 MKX. I watched your video to see how you changed the master cylinder. I'm glad that I watched that video to the end and saw your recommendation for freeing a stuck valve in the ABS module. I didn't know that was the problem, but I always try the easiest fix first. Braking hard from 50 mph fixed my sinking brake pedal problem! Thank you!

Thank you so much for this info. I 'm a veteran mechanic of 39 years and I will never understand why engineers have to try and make things so difficult and stupid. I had a customer with bad master cylinder and after bench bleeding and automated bleeding and manual bleeding could not get a firm pedal. I did find the info about pushing the park brake 5 times but it did not say to bleed first and continue to hold the pedal to the floor whilst doing so. But your procedure did the trick thank again

I'm going thru this now with a 2013 ford edge sport. I replaced all 4 calipers, rotors, Brake pads and hoses. I still can't get a full brake pedal even after I bleed the lines. Help please.
Do you have to press the park brake while the bleeder valve is opened or closed?

I had a truck with no brake lights cause me to jam the brakes on our 2014 MKX same exact scenario, bled brakes, replaced master cylinder (shop was $650 actual parts were $150) bled brakes 4 times still a soft pedal. 20 mph jammed the brakes several times on gravel and grass brakes are perfect now. I got a ford edge, this problem comes back after awhile. So what I did was get forscan software and the obdlink cable, and now whenever the brakes get spongy, I just connect up and then it has a ABS bleed procedure, basically you just hold the pedal down and it does whatever it does, that works for about 6 months to a year, and I have to repeat, but it's my cheaper then the fixes required.
My wife's 2012 Ford Edge was having the same break squishiness.
I bled the brakes. Made it a little better.
I was debating about taking it to a mechanic either dealership or otherwise. But figured let me search the good old interwebs and see if there's a fix.
Well! You provided the fix.
I took the car to an area of town where God forbid the brakes actually failed. I wouldn't hit anybody or anything. Drove the car up to 25/30 mph. And slam the brakes.
Squishiness was gone! Did this three more times going forward. And twice in reverse. Just on the side of caution.
Brake feels better than when we first bought the car 2 years ago.

Like many others I want to Thank You. I watched your video to see what if any special tools I would need to replace the master cylinder in my wife’s 2014 Ford Edge. The problem was on Christmas Eve night going down a steep hill the brake pedal went down to the floor and had very little uneven stopping power. Checked for fluid loss and reservoir was full then was going to replace the master cylinder. Noticed in your vid I’d need a e6 torx socket and luckily watched your informative video to the end. So I took the car out and applied firm brake pressure at 50mph and pedal was back to normal after doing so. 🙏🏼

Thanks for the parking brake tip! I will say that the Forscan program has an ABS pump bleed service procedure that will actuate those valves and raise the pedal without the "oh shit" stop. That might help.
Awesome video. Those last two tips will help it. I've been struggling with these 2011 Edge. New brake booster and Master cylinder, bled brakes and still going to floor. OMG so ridiculous that it needs different steps to get all air out. Older vehicles always easier. Definitely will try this tomorrow and can be done with this vehicle. U the man! 2013 Edge 2.0 Ecoboost. New pads, rotors, master cylinder, bled the crap out of it using ur tip. Still intermittent soft pedal. Should have listened to the end! Will slam those breaks shortly!!
Great video. Had the intermittent problem with the HCU valve(s) sticking and pedal going close to the flooro n a 2013 Edge. First time it happened I was able to unstick it with several hard braking events (forward and reverse) on wet pavement as mentioned on this and other videos. Second time (many months later) the HCU valves got stuck again and the hard stops didn't work. Hooked up Forscan and ran ABS module auto bleed and that worked like a charm. Since this has happened twice in the last year, I realize the more long-term fix may be to replace the HCU, but I'm hoping to delay that large expense with the auto bleed approach.
I have Ford Edge Sel 2013.. Problem with brakes. We used all the recommendations of the repair specialists. After replacing the cylinder, the problem did not disappear. And only when the booster was changed, everything fell into place. Bleed the brakes and work great.

I am a diy parts changer. Tune ups, fluid changes, shocks, radiators, fuel injectors, wheel bearings, brakes from the line to the rotor... i'll take my wife's edge to a local independent shop tomorrow. My work stops at the heads, tranny motherboards, and now apparently master cylinders. Lol

I sure hope you watched the video to the end as I discuss the Master cylinder wasn't needed to fix the issue. And explain what I did do to take care of the problem. But I do understand where you are coming from.
In regards to your concluding statements, your research has saved me a replacement of hcu unit...$1600 repair. I did what you said with the forward drive and locked it up on a dirt/gravel road. You could feel the abs working more and more as I repeated it... but the trick is to do it in reverse also... amazing recovery of brake pedal pressure after exercising those valves in the hcu. I also did the tapping technique recommended elsewhere, both seem to work, my brakes feel new!!! Thank you

Thank you, after replacing the master cylinder do to it being spongy it ended it being the abs that was causing, took it out on a dirt road slammed on the brakes a couple times and it fixed it

Thank you so much for posting your video! I got the soft pedal to the floor after a quick stop... Went out on a four-lane road today with no traffic and locked em up at 50 mph and it was half better. Did it one more time close to 50 and again at 25 and now the brakes are nice and firm just like they were before the issue started. I also did it in reverse at about 20 mph twice. Read some other comments on other videos suggesting doing reverse helps UPDATE: It's been a month and it got soft again today. Got up to 45 on wet Road. Slammed on the brakes two or three times and it's fixed again. Read somewhere in the comments about possibly dirty brake fluid causing the ABS control unit valves to stick. Wondering if a brake fluid flush would help??

I want to tell how I finally got my brakes to bleed on my 2011 edge, I tried many ideas off the internet, I must’ve have bleed it about twenty times, and did the locking the brakes up at about 25 miles a hour. Had brakes but still low pedal. I bought a foxwell nt630 plus bleeder off amazon for about 130.00 on sale, tried that because it actuates the abs module and still nothing different, so I had my wife run that bleeding sequence while I opened the bleeder and shut it at each wheel, it has you hold on the brake while it’s running the module and then tell you to take your foot off the brake, so I did all 4 wheels, got in it and had no pedal at all, I thought I lost everything, so I hook up the foxwell again this time without opening bleeders, running the foxwell like normal, and all of sudden I had not only brakes back, but my pedal was all the way up like new. Yes I got air in the system because I had to change out a master cylinder that went bad. I hear that you won’t get the air out of abs valve body just using normal bleeding, and doing it the normal way with the foxwell didn’t do it either, you have to be able to move the air down away from it, that’s why I was opening and shutting bleeders at each wheel, and then ran the foxwell bleeders normal and it worked. I know this may sound questionable, but I’ve been doing my own repairs for more than 40 years on my own vehicles , I’m not a beginner,

Do you mean open the bleeder valve while running the abs bleed at the same time? I have the same issue with my master cylinder, but after installing a new one I have no brakes at all. Pedal straight to the floor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My friend had an old '80s van and he was instructed to smash the brake six times just with the vehicle parked to reset the ABS valves. Any chance doing it while it's parked would work as well?
doubtful but let me know if you experience something different.
@@FreeAutoMechanic- now that I think about it a few weeks later, this wasn't for his ABS I think it was to reset the brake diverter block where if a leak occurs it closes off that line of the brakes.
There are TSB's for the brake booster on these as well.

I have been experiencing spongy pedal issues with my Ford Edge sport 2013. A year ago it started going spongy when I used emergency breaking. As soon as the air is released, it will be back to normal. However, later on it doesn't become normal after releasing the air. The master cylinder and brake booster have been replaced. The situation remains the same.Please let me know how I can resolve this issue I hope you can help me out with this issue. My dashboard does not display any warning lights.
What is the difference in leaving the battery hooked up, or hooking it up to a different battery? It still has power going to the car, right?
In the video I remove the battery to gain access to the master cylinder bolts. As it says in the video, I connect the jump start pack to the battery cables to keep from losing clock and radio settings. If you are able to do the procedure without removing or disconnecting the battery, by all means, go for it.

@@larrnew Resetting the clock isn't to much, however resetting all the radio stations on a CUSTOMERS vehicle might take an extra 1/2 hour to do. On your own vehicle, might not be as much of an issue.

Guys all u gotta do have someone sit the vehicle lift the front up make sure its safe to go under it and hit on the abs pump from underneath with a stick or what ever just little hits while the person is in the car pumping the brakes make sure the vehicle is on and running. Thank me later.

I was doing rear brakes. Everything was fine when I parked it and I took the rear caliper off cause I couldn’t get the piston to turn in and after the caliper was bled the pedal goes to the floor. Do you think the parking brake bleeding trick would help me?
YES. It is identified in the bleeding procedure as a must.

My master cylinder was replaced but every time I push down hard on the pedal, the brakes go back to going all the way down to the floor mat.

@@papillonblue4038Jjust slam on your brake at 25 miles per hour while turn your car to the left,couple of times and salma on the barakes at 25 milea per hour on revers that should reset the ABS module,don`t mess withh anithing else on your brakes ,before change master cilinder and other parts!

word to the wise - clock and radio settings are not worth the effort of hooking up more equipment, just reprogram them
