  • I have been blessed to ride with a number of the world’s most amazing bike riders. They tend to have very different takes on riding and what they are trying to accomplish. One thing they seem to have in common is a drive to test their resolve. Their skills have reached such a high level that I think the real challenge for them is being able to follow through with what their mind knows they are capable of. Their ability to clear their minds of fear and self-doubt allow them to consistently perform at a level the rest of us might only touch once in a blue moon. It isn’t just some gift they are born with, they work for it, and they work hard. When there’s something they want to do and the voice inside tells them that they can (probably) do it, they focus everything on making it happen. The legendary Jay Miron stand’s above the rest at this skill and so this silly cartoon is intended to be a tribute to his determination and something we can all hopefully find inspiration in.

The brotherhood of bike riding no matter if you were doing your first back flip or first bunny hop everyone was always stoked at your progression. It's an amazing thing

I totally agree with you on that being one of the best vert comps ever! 88'Flint Michigan is up there though. It was one of the last comps that the structure due to TV or big sponsors didnt hold back the riders creativity or comradery during the event!
    Thank you for this Taj!

I was never a vert rider, but this contest does stand out as the most epic

Jay was my favourite rider. His ride was just so daring yet smooth and technical. And he was always laughing and throwing stuff just to let go of control and seee what happened, unlike Mirra who always looked obsessed with competition and perfection.

Loved the Jerry Galley illustration. He did actually air that high!
Remember the sound he made when tapping the roof at Radlands.
You are still my favorite Rider though Taj. Best downside whips, manuals and griz airs in the business.

Awesome and well delivered story! Jay was such a incredible all around rider! Smooth at flat too! During a commercial break at the 1998 XGames, he dropped in on the vert ramp, blasted 2 or 3 warm up airs and then completely nailed a super high
    nose dive in 540 whip.....

Great story, and well told, Taj. I can't remember who wrote it, but there was a contest story in Ride BMX around the late 90s where Miron told somebody during pro practice to punch him in the face if he missed a nose manual. CANADIAN BEEEAST

Love this! Miron had a quality to his riding that few have ever had. Like the small guy who looks forward to fighting the toughest guy in the bar and wins most of the time, but when he loses he just gets up and finishes his beer.

I have this memory of seeing Miron trying 540 double whips on vert in some contest in the late 90s. Is that a real memory or am I making stuff up? Does anyone remember that?

No disrespect to mirra but idk miron always seemed like the bigger beast. Mirra was like the park god who could ride everything miron was like the street god who'd send it on everything too. That or they're both just a different breed and vert needs to come back
