Robert Gardner you need to be empathic and a good listener for clinical psychology, it’s fine to be introverted for that. You’d be fine in research too if introversion is your only weakness. If you are really introverted it’s probably not a good idea to be planning on a career in marketing, environmental psychology, Human Resources, some area of social work etc. Which require a lot of interaction and a degree of assertiveness.

To be quite honest, I grew tired of working in the field. A lot of our efforts weren't sustainable for many of us. We put forth so much of our time and mental energy to get paid peanuts and struggle to meet our needs at home. Even folks with masters degrees experience low pay in the field of psychology.
I wish I wasn't so naive and knew more about what I was getting into.

    • @psyched4life924

@@psyched4life924 the truth is that the field was rewarding to me in ways no other job ever was. I watched children with autism learn to communicate without hitting their head against the ground in frustration, teenagers walk away from gangs, and adults turn their lives around to become better parents or just better people in general.
But I particularly hated the leadership throwing its employees under the bus and not to mention parents that seemed to not take an active role in their child's treatment, simply letting the professionals do all the work when the parents themselves have the most important role to play.
I'll always have the utmost respect for all manner of helping professions. But my philosophy has somewhat changed.
I love helping people, it's who I am. But it doesn't have to be my profession. Helping people can come in the form of being a living and dedicated friend, family, or simply an empathetic stranger. Pretty much why I decided not to further my education as originally planned
I really appreciated this video because while you do live in Australia, it certainly reminded me of things about my previous line of work that were life lessons to me.
      Keep doing what you do!

Thank you so much for the video. One of my dreams is to be a child psychologist, but in my country, the salary for it is quite low even if it's in high-demand. That honestly frustrates me because I know I'm going to be spending at least 7 years studying psychology for my bachelor's, master's and PhD. I know it's shallow of me to think about money, but I need to survive too you know. That's why I've been debating if I should become a psychologist or not. It's really confusing for me.

hey no worries! i totally get what u mean :( i'm currently thinking of being a child psychologist too rn and it makes me sad to hear that they're not paid properly despite being in demand from where you are. i don't think it's shallow at all to consider the pay to a job because u need to get paid adequately in order to function the best for ur job. i've heard that a lot of healthcare professions are just so demanding and not paid well that workers burn out and if that happens then the quality of care probably drops. i think the good thing about psychology is that it can be broad (At least in australia), so u can potentially do teaching or research or other healthcare roles (like advising for businesses etc. or working in schools). but at the end of the day yeah it's a personal decision to see if ur willing to sacrifice something personal to do a job like this :(((

In the past, universities had dedicated "Teaching Fellows" who would handle the bulk of undergraduate teaching - Costs have been cut, fees have been increased - you basically have to depend on your own initiative and hope you have the mental fortitude to brave the stress/workload/existential pressures - great video and a LOAD of great advice and insights

As you mentioned, I'm having trouble organizing my time and adjusting to the autonomous thinking that comes with college.
I, too, want to be a psychologist, but I'm not sure if it's the correct path for me. I am fascinated by how the mind and behavior interact, I do think I am on the right path since I love observing body language and other areas of psychology.
I agree with you; I'm beginning to learn that, while academics are brilliant thinkers, they're terrible teachers.
Another issue is making relationships; it's more difficult when your entire class is online, my online college creates a sense of community for even a current students like myself.

Thank you so much for this! As a high school student that lives in Australia but came from a different country, I had no idea how university was going to be. Since I want to study psychology as well, it kinda sucks that some teachers are not very enthusiastic because I was thinking of going to Melbourne uni. If you’re okay with it I was wondering what ATAR you got since I’m kind of nervous about not being accepted, thank you so much ☺️☺️

Aw this comment made my day. I’m actually so happy I was able to make things clearer for you cos I honestly was so clueless and didn’t do any research going in. Ok so to answer your questions i got a 98.90 star (IB converted), BUT star honestly means JACK S*** in Uni - nobody talks about it, nobody cares about it (which totally surprised me). So I would recommend not putting too much stress on that, do ur best and do ur research on the minimum atar requirements to get in!! I’m not sure what it is anymore (cos it changes yearly) but when I got into melb it was like 85? But please please please keep ur options open. I have heard great things about deakin’s psych course - it’s less about the prestige of the uni and the actual course structure and teachers!! The prestige is a trap I fell for, but that being said if ur sight is set on melb uni defs try for it but make sure to not overlook the other unis

Funnily u ask me about future plans. I’m actually planning on pursuing clinical psychology/counselling because I’m rlly passionate about youth mental health but things aren’t set in stone. Also as for melb uni don’t take my word as the ultimate truth!! I have friends who love it and have continued to do 4th year. One thing good about the Melbourne model is how flexible it is - they encourage u to take different breadth subjects and u can switch majors. However if u know u 100% wanna do psych, there r unis like Monash that have 4 years course (where getting into 4th yr is a lot easier). I recommend u do a pro and con list and do some research (something I failed at)

Could you tell me if we need to choose specifically if we want to do clinical/counselling psycho etc in the first year itself? Or do we do that after the first 3 years. Also do u think ot would be too much for me to do a double degree nd work part time as well? If i come to aus, I'm gonna have to work, so I'm trynna see if i can balance a dual degree along with working .

Haha no worries :) great questions! Check out my video here for more info on the psychology pathways (I go in a lot more detail): ruclips.net/video/8K1Mh2-6vHk/видео.html
In regards to a double degree, I don't know too much but I do know someone who did bachelor of commerce and psychology (double degree). Not sure if there would be enough time for a job but I'd assume you would be able to depending on how you balance work and study. I find tutoring jobs tend to be the most flexible with some companies allowing u to take on as many students as u want so maybe u can look into that?
If you're still not sure. You can contact student support or the uni directly to ask about the contact hours of a double degree. The contact hours is basically how many hours u learn at school. Good luck!
