I too was a fan of the "C" word after I learnt it for the first time at school back when British schools were true places of learning (mainly how to swear and fight). We're talking quite a few decades ago, but I am not prepared to say how many.
The trouble is, I made the mistake of using the "C" word in front of my older sister when I was 14 and her response was to slap me across my beardless cheek and berate me for a full 20 minutes. I love and respect my sister (now I mean - then, she just scared the shit out of me), so I never used that ugly sexual oath ever again. Apart from, that is, in moments of everyday extreme stress like driving to work, watching important football matches or, shopping or, on occasion, when I'm teaching.
With that last one, I usually manage to moderate my language and employ the much milder phrase "fucking wanker" instead.
It works wonders with most students when they are being cunts.

Like most things we now frown upon or deem to be 'naughty', it was the VIctorians Wot Done It, as The Sun would say. The word 'cunt' was in common usage in Chaucer's age. The Victorian's also used to cover piano legs because they were sexual. FFS.

Tips for tourists: The bit you couldn't understand was "Gap Years" which is the habit of some students to take a year off between college or sixth form and University and go travelling. Usually a habit of the kids of the wealthy middle class. Fun Fact - Al Murray (in character as the pub Landlord) actually DID stand for election to parliament against Nigel Farage in 2015 !!

    • @cornishmaid9138

    King Boomer,
On 14 January 2015, Murray announced his formation of the "Free United Kingdom Party" (FUKP) and declared his candidacy, deploying his Pub Landlord persona, for the parlimantary seat of South Thanet running against UKIPleader Nigel as Parlimtary candidatein the 2015 general election Murray's agent, Dan Lloyd, told the BBC "it's definitely happening".
The party's logo is an upside-down pound sign, not dissimilar to UKIP's purple and gold pound sign. Murray said: "it seems to me that the UK is ready for a bloke waving a pint around, offering common sense solutions", adding: "let it be known that like many of the parliamentary hopefuls in the forthcoming election, I have no idea where South Thanet is - but did that stop Nargaret Thatcher from saving the Falkland Islands? No!”
There is also a TED Talk on You tube that he did to explain why he stood as candidate.

A gap year is something some people do over here. So basically you get free college (not university) or 6th form. You get 2 years before you have to pay but you can split them into two and take what we call a gap year, so you take a year off to go travelling or something just before the end of school or before starting 6th form or college so you can try find yourself and work out what you want to do in life

Once in a while there is something that makes me laugh so hard that I feel a little sad afterwards that the moment has passed and the 'trying to sleep with a 6th former was the best in years. I just lost it. I mean when I started secondary school there was one 6th form girl who everyone was blown away by. She was radiant. She ran off to France with a PE teacher. Bastard.

The County of Kent he mentioned is in the Southeast of England and borders The English Channel (of which France of across the water). Interestingly, there is an area called Thanet that Nigel Farage once tried to stand for MP (and failed), and I believe Al Murray also stood to try and takes votes off him. I also live in Thanet, it has very "interesting" politics down this way.

Casual labour quite often comes from abroad .... he's hinting that so many of them came over to England for this little interlude of picking apples. Kent is in the South East of England where the Dover ferry terminal is located. The Euro tunnel departs from Folkestone, also in Kent.
Students, if they've got the money (or their parents do) take a year away from everything and travel the world before settling down to a "proper job" - it's called a GAP year.
