In this exclusive interview with Rare Disease Report, Dr. Adele Schneider, the medical director of the Victor Center explains these three diseases and why it is important for young Jewish adults to be screened. Could be indeed, but it requires an understanding of the layout of these ashkenazi communities to get a better understanding of what could cause there to be an alarming issue. The people of the ashkenazi communities usually would marry and reproduce with those of the carrier trait of those diseases. To explain why they carry these traits would require me to explain for awhile but let’s just say it is in their genes. And since these diseases are autosomal recessive, this means that if two carriers of the disease reproduce, there is a 25% chance that the offspring will get the disease.

For a more scientific take on the Jewish origin debate, recent DNA analysis of Ashkenazic Jews - a Jewish ethnic group - revealed that their maternal line is European. It has also been found that their DNA only has 3% ancient ancestry which links them with the Eastern Mediterranean (also known as the Middle East) - namely Israel, Lebanon, parts of Syria, and western Jordan. This is the part of the world Jewish people are said to have originally come from - according to the Old Testament. But 3% is a minuscule amount, and similar to what modern Europeans as a whole share with Neanderthals. So given that the genetic ancestry link is so low, Ashkenazic Jews’ most recent ancestors must be from elsewhere.
My family is German Jewish, I’m only one of two out of six to survive Familial adenomatous polyposis Syndrome (FAP) my brother and I are the only ones they have live past 50 and we had our surgeries done in our early 30s to remove 75% of our digestive system, that’s complete removal of the colon and rectum anus and over 50% of the small intestine have been removed, only to find the cancerous polyps in our stomachs which we have refused to have removed, our father died at 30 but we were told he had early onset: Cancer when we were children, only to find out that our father actually had this disease And that it has a name later on, our grandparents died in their 40’s, I don’t know how prevalent this disease is in the Jewish community or if it’s just because we’re German-Jewish and it may be affecting non-Jewish Germans as well

I am a carrier of cystic fibrosis. Her father is a carrier too. We lost our daughter in 2007 to the disease. My grandmother and grandfather were Ashkenazi Jewish.

There are a number of companies that do whole genome sequencing and test for rare diseases. I chose one that was about $500 and they sample 30,000 genes and give confidential reports. It takes longer than microarray- based autosomal DNA tests like Ancestry or 23 & Me - more like 12-15 weeks as it is a more involved procedure. Best of luck

He’s still alive and is 5 years post bilateral lung transplant.. another interesting thing maybe. My mom was basque / Jewish. O- RH negative . As am I. My baby brother is Opos but in cross match they couldn’t not find a donor ( something about antigens) my mom and I donated blood products for his surgery

With regard to the genetic disorders of the Sephardic Jews who stayed in Iberia after the decrees of expulsion and the establishment of the Inquisition, very little is known. The only recognized Jewish population in the Spanish territory that follows this criterion are the Chuetas. Several reports are available with clinical relevance (Buades et al., 1995; Domingo et al., 2000; Guix et al., 2002; Cambra et al., 2009). As to Portugal, there is only one report on a Jewish genetic condition, an autosomal recessive form of retinitis pigmentosa studied in the Crypto-Jews of Belmonte (Gerber et al., 2000). Similar to other Sephardic specific variants, as the consequence of sustained inbreeding practices, this seems to have arisen 200-500 years ago, after the establishment of this isolated population in Belmonte (Gerber et al., 2000). Recent studies also reported a high prevalence of this disorder in Ashkenazi Jews (Zelinger et al., 2011; Zuchner et al., 2011; Venturini et al., 2014) but caused by a mutation in a different gene.
