  • What Are the Chickens Up To? | Update on Our Rooster Ash
What are the chickens up to on a snowy Vermont afternoon? Let's go see!
When it comes to backyard chickens, silkie chickens are one of the cutest breeds. With their small stature, and they big attitudes, it makes them so irresistible to me.
    ABOUT US
We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
Birch Moon Farm is now home to 2 humans, 2 cats, one dog, 3 geese and lots of silkie chickens! Follow along with us while we build our homestead one project at a time.

Hi Rebecca and Bill! Those chocolate girls sure are pretty. They look like Cocoa 😊
I have a few habitual head-dippers. One is my oldest girl who is smarter than you're average silkies lol. I'm pretty sure she's figured out that she can see better if she keeps her crest a mess 🤦
I've had a lot of eggs actually and it's a chore to get them often before they freeze.
Two have been broody, so I have babies to one a couple of days ago..they are doing great. 🐣🐥 You all take care!

Oh wow! I think you are right about seeing better! I sometimes love having a broody that keeps the eggs from freezing until I get to them HAHAHA

I dont think so but couldnt hurt to just do a quick check on Google. I havent worried about them because we use them for the wild birds too. So I figured that if the wild birds could eat them my chickens could too. 😂😍

I am so happy you asked this question! That is so awesome! I JUST saw a facebook post (one hour ago) on one of my chicken groups and someone had a partridge blue mixed chick. And it was gorgeous!!!! I almost has me wondering if I should just add my partridge girl to Simon's flock (BBS). Let me see if I can send you a pic somehow. :) Stay tuned!
