Watching this in 2020!! Omg how it was and it became. Car brands then refused to give them a car, now all the manufacturers wish they talk to them. What a time!
Wow, _Harry Enfield_ seems almost endearingly shy. From the way he sits and holds his head down, he's a long way from 'Stanley', who is _considerably richer than you_ or something. Love his cars. They demonstrate someone that feels no need to be ostentatious almost to the point of not wanting to be noticed. I guess he keeps his work at work.
Remember that all his obnoxious twat characters get their comeuppance. Which clearly shows where his sympathies lie. ;)

I think clarkson said there's a 12-13 year waiting list to be in the top gear audience lol. So yeah, massive change!

It's weird to think isn't it, there were 19 people in the first ever studio audience of Top Gear, with a few thousand watching at home. Now there's a massive waiting list of several years and 350 million viewers in 170 countries.
All in less than 10 years. Wow. I bow my head.

Man I wish the BBC would release series 1 on DVD I would buy it in a heartbeat because it's the only season I've never seen. This is the first time I've even seen a clip of it.
James May wasn’t in the first series they had Jason Dawe instead.
I seem to remember that Jason had a section on his own called the market about the best deals buys etc on used car market
Full episodes of the first series have never been repeated on tv only edited best of with anything with Jason in removed for some reason
ReddoFreddo That's Jason Dawe, the original third host. He was replaced in series 2 by James May. And thus the unholy trinity was complete.
The new top gear dreams to have that many people in the audience😆
It shows that Jeremy is quite a fast driver 1:50 was a decently quick time for the first reasonably priced car yet with two people in the back he got that.
Amazing, that proves what an amazing programme it is, a real big hit!

That was the first episode of the new format back in 2002, each episode after this gets more and more people.

With Clarkson having a pop at Rover, I wonder if he realises that he's sat on the Rover Chair as produced by Ron Arad. The actual seats were all from P6 Rovers. Nice

The studio these days are packed full of people!
Top Gear has been going for 20 years or so. It's the first ep returning when they changed it to include Hammond and May to make it more interesting. They started doing more than just talking about cars and actually getting more involved with driving them.
Now its one of the best shows on TV!

Been searching for months for the full episode of this but just cannot find it anywhere.
It's almost like the BBC is ashamed of this episode and removed it from existence.
You can look at the pirating websites, I'm pretty sure you can find it in one of them, or the torrent websites.
their passion for cars and their popularity is what made this show popular evidently

Jason Dawe. He was the third presenter for the first series before James May replaced him from the second series onwards.

A friend of mine also wanted to while being in England but he was told that there is a over three month waiting list for the studio guests.

So many comments about how empty it was. I'd say it wasn't to empty considering it was an early episode of the first season of a very new concept.
Even new shows have audiences quotas. This is a low amount objectively

Man, there is like 30 people or so in that studio. Now there is hundreds in there and waiting lists that are incredibly long.
