You wouldn't accept lag offline, so why do it online? ume.net, a fiber broadband provider that offers up to 1000 Mbit/s, performed an experiment. Four volunteers got to experience internet's biggest disturbance in real life - lag. Наука
I would rage quit so fast.
Rage quit life?? Yeah... not the greatest advice :/
ha if life was like this i would rage quit life
LoL what happen if u blind? Im curious
What's Trending suicide was always an option

Now they should get a drone camera and have it fly behind a person and have a "Third person perspective in real life" experiment.
This has been done with a camera on a boom. It apparently gave people strange out-of-body experience feelings.
Joshua, can you provide a link to that video ?
I can't find a video, but if you search, you can find some references to the study. On my phone, so no links handy now.
@@JoshuaBardwell are you back to your computer yet?
@@blueninja012 I think not
The low FPS of that webcam would bother me more than the lag.
me too
Yeah...low FPS can make you VERY sick in VR

0:45 - "It feels like something from Super Mario."
Yeah, remember that time Mario wore an Oculus Rift headset?
They did on Immersion. Kind of.
If I was wearing one of those, I'd just run around accusing everyone else of "HAX"
Oh thee old hackeroo
They should test it while driving.
"They should kill themselves"
O-Okay, man.

Do you remember you wrote this comment 6 years ago?
That one guy online in Mario Kart with a potato router would be proud
This is the same concept as the speech jammer but applied to movement 0_0
Speech jammer doesn't work on me at all, or anyone I had use it. This video is hilarious though.
Google+ Sucks in order for the speech jammer to work you need to not hear your original voice AT ALL, and only the late one. As shown here that works with sight as the screens on the Oculus only show the delayed footage.
ThirtyVirus Yup, used with high end Senhnheiser over ear headphones and Soundmagic ear buds.
Google+ Sucks Did you make sure the delay was at the right level? It's supposed to be either a .2 or .02 second delay. I don't remember which, try both
I got rid of the app, don't recall it having options like that. Was a while ago. I'll likely download it again and check that out though. We tried while just speaking randomly and reading and it just seemed like people on the net were exaggerating the results. Which is pretty common for these sorts of things.
I'm willing to bet a lot of the results would have been a lot similar if the whole lag part was taken out.
how much do you want to bet?
Umm, what? You're telling me that these people wouldn't have been able to complete these simple tasks normally?
mikedee83 Well he's right to an extent. Most of the problems seem to be with depth perception, are they using a 3D camera set up or just a single lens? If it's a single lens then most of the issues could just be because of that.
agreed, i crack eggs onto the stove and walk into walls on the daily..........
VenVidiVici it's not even the 3D it's the different point of view. They were looking a good 4 inch displaced from where their eyes usually see.
"it feels like something from super mario"
mario never asked for this.
the thing is, internet speed doesn't cause latency, ping does, a result of the distance between networked devices, faster internet doesn't reduce ping, EM waves travel at the same speeds in the same medium
We should all live in the void
***** yes, that is correct, to stream something effectively, your internet must be able to transfer at the given bits/second
however, once your speed is consistently above the required rate, you will no longer see an increase in performance
that means that in most streaming cases (any online game really), you bottleneck on ping by about 1 Mb/s
the 1000mbps described in the description is overkill for any single streaming task, what it does allow is a non-streaming task to be completed very rapidly and/or multiple tasks at once
back to my original point, the company's suggestion that their speed will eliminate lag is an attempt to wow idiots with numbers without any context
Living with 1/3S lag, 240p and 5FPS*
You should do another experiment living with 30 FPS vs 60 FPS just to shut the peasants up.
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen im living with 30fps bitch
THE FASTEST GAMER ALIVE Then you never experienced games.
+Martin Peniak I live with an image being directly injected into my brain.
Cake Plex well i experience games on a shitty pc and console games on a ps2 and a wii. i am a hardcore gamer but i'm a peasant. does that mean that i have to shut up? i started my games without lag until i got into pc gaming more. i'm getting a modified alienware alpha next year with my savings and it will finally run well.
+Hope Hurteau
depends what fps your talking about.
anything above 30fps will look the "same" to our eyes (motion, instead of still pictures).
but thats not the same as games running at 30/60 fps. then its depending on the game. i can play NFS Rivals at 30 frames, no problem, but i wont play FPS shooter like crysis/BF/COD/Rainbow 6 at less than 40-60 frames/s
They should have two cameras, eye distance apart. Because now they have no depth perception! Which makes some of the tests loose in merit.
i was thinking the same thing.
It's an ad. I'm not expecting much scientific rigour :P
ArtlessMammet yea, youre right. should be an ad for glasses :P
cptrex98
I'm almost positive to be honest with you that the Rift (device they're using) has 2 cameras inside of it. But when it's projected into a video, it only shows one camera. Because +PewDiePie plays with it all the time and there is always 2 circular videos.
Its not about the feed inside of the ocolous, but the amount of cameras mounted on the outside. The ocolous produces one image for each eye. But its still from just one camera. With your eyes you see two separate images from slighty different angles, one for each eye. When you have only one camera you see two of the exact same images from the exact same angle. There's still one for each eye, but since theyre no different the images, even though there's one for each eye, appear flat and you cannot percive depth. To be able to do so you would need two cameras that produce a separate image for each eye.
Hopefully you understand what im trying to say :P
They should pilot a plane with real life lag
They did. It was called '9/11'
Elderzeth They did it twice !
MrBiky It was just a social experiment bro calm down
Elderzeth I'm calm, I was messing around.
+Elderzeth 2016 (GONE WRONG) (GONE SEXUAL) ✔️
Most issues shown here are not caused by latency, but by lack of 3d visuals.
and buffering, and an extremely low frame rate.
They do have 3D visuals, but the cameras don't match their inter-pupilary distance. A lot of VR headsets have this thing called pass-through which let you see the real world, and having used that feature, it really messes with your depth perception as everything feels just a little off.
@@4shtia 0:46 there is clearly just a single webcam Logitech C910 (alike), not two! (the gopro added later has not video out connected)
@@rarbiart Well shit I just realized that this was from a few years ago... Wow we have come a long way
Slight problem. To my knowledge. You can lag whilst having 1Mbit/s. You can lag whilst having 100,000,000 Mbit/s. The bandwidth is not the same as the speed it takes the signals to arrive.
Yes but it still helps, obviously ping is the major factor though.
You are correct that the distance the signal has to travel to arrive at its destination is the largest contribution to lag. But as far the the USA region is concerned I don't think this is the major issue of lag.
Having overhead in terms of bandwidth will help with lag dramatically, especially on the upload. The problem is consumer demand for digital media is so great that it overloads the network. A single household where everyone wants to watch or stream HD videos while downloading/sharing and gaming will saturate their upload and cause that unfortunate delay. The router has to start queuing on the up stream causing lag.
Most High Speed ISP's in the USA as far as I know, have very good response time. There was a FCC report that showed highest average for the year is 54ms. Based on test data from major ISP's.
aka latency
He's right. The only time that lag would be affected by bandwidth is if the size of the data you're trying to send is larger than the maximum bandwidth, as it will have to be sent in chunks causing a delay, but this is incredibly rare as the majority of applications that are subject to lag in real time are games, and the data chunks they send are small enough for the vast majority of connections to send out in one go.
Fiber optics=Close to the speed of light. Way faster than we can see/comprehend. The future is here my friend!
Faster download rates won't fix bad ping times though... physical proximity is generally the limiting factor.
True. Unless the technology allows for faster travelling time of the information sent/received. There are researches already about this.
I was hoping to find that answer. Look like there are still some people that know their stuff. The only exception where lag/bandwidth have something to do with each other when it comes to packet size (for example in voice transmittion codecs). Smaller packets -> higher bandwidth but less lag. Bigger packets -> lower bandwith but more lag.
australia simulator 2014
so true
This was awesome!
I love seeing the Oculus Rift being put into more applications than /just/ video games. Can't wait to see what everyone's able to do with it once it goes retail, too!
I'm pretty sure having a 1000 Mbit/s connection don't reduce lag even if you compare it with a 5 or 10 Mbit/s line.
False
where i live (in argentina) the best conection that i can "buy" is 1 Mbit/s T_T, and its very expensive (about 30 dolars, and works horrible D:)
Lewan Montero Yes that's why I said at 5-10 Mbit/s. Gaming does not require as much bandwidth. I had a 5-8 Mbit copper line, now I've got 80 Mbit fibre, I used to game a shit tun on that connection, especially during throttled peak hours where my connection was reduced to 1-3 Mbits, it was still playable and it didn't affect in game lag, I played a lot of competitive Counter Strike back then and in game rates, interp, lag and all this shit matters.
Agreed, Latency and bandwidth are 2 separate things.
This video has been selected by the channel as one of the best Commercial/Advert videos on RUclips and was added to the channel's playlist accordingly. Thanks for sharing.
Don't oculus rift and drive.
OH NO, THE OCULUS NOT USED FOR GAMING. EVERYONE START CANCELLING YOUR OCULUS ORDERS. FUCK FACEBOOK!
i have to show that video to my mother, sayin 'THAT HAPPENS EVERYTIME YOU WANT TO WATCH STREAMPING EPISODES OF GREY'S ANATOMY!'
You could have at least used a camera that had a better framerate than 15 fps jeeze
I like how this whole video turns into an ad for "Buy our gigabit internet today!" when having gigabit internet won't reduce your ping and high ping is what is responsible for lag.
+BtheDestroyer it will reduce your ping
DjR37 No it won't. Having 100 M/s internet vs 10 M/s internet won't change someone's ping. Ping and bandwith are entirely separate.
BATTLEFIELD 4.
How does it feel like something from Super Mario? She was just naming the first video game she could think of.
Maybe she remembers the Virtual Boy from Nintendo, and associated it with Super Mario World, a game that came out relatively close to the release of the Virtual Boy.

It was even funnier than I thought it was going to be.
Gigabit internet.. so jelly.
***** Meanwhile in Australia... 25 mb/s by 2019
Jordan Brewer Not really. Take a look at this link. But in the end, although you'd have outstanding line quality with this, it will be outstanding locally, nationally. You can't expect to have a low latency to a server in Texas or to max your bandwidth on it no matter what line you have, unfortunately. Geographic distance matters. :/

Austin Smith very agree, much lag
That is Oculus Rift, it is a device that is being developed mainly for gaming purposes, but will also see lots of different uses, like medical and military. It is a "beta", so to speak, of a VR (Virtual Reality), it will simulate the vision of characters in first person, with headtracking and all.
It's like waiting on your paycheck. It always comes too late

darthkotya oh yeah blocking and reported are you scared of me kiddo lol
Back in my day when 14.4 modems were hot shit we had to learn to lag shoot. Lag shooting 3-5 target sizes of lead was real skill.
Absolutely great.
This is easily the most simultaneously hilarious and interesting thing I've seen in a while.
1/3 s and 3 s? Guys, something like 100 ms would be more realistic. And, I believe, something you could actually adapt quite well to if exposed long enough to it.
yeah, but lag isn't a problem until it's in random intervals
if you live your whole life with lag, you'll get adapted to it. maybe our brains are already full of lags since birth, we just didn't know it.
On average, we experience about an 80 millisecond delay (I think that is the proper average), which is how long it takes for our brains to process the images we see. So technically, we do go our whole life with a very minute lag.
The purpose of the commercial is to sell internet connection with high bandwidth, but the primary issue addressed here is bad response time...
I kind of want to try this. I feel like this would be really entertaining. For a bit.
Also, I definitely need to move to Sweden. 1000 mpbs? I get 1.5!
This is how BF4 online was like.
Yeah, maybe with 300+ ping. :P
absolutely epic stuff did you guys all know its possible to trick your luck ? just find and watch this video *"Andrew B Cloverfield"* and see how its done xD
Mary Petty FU
Stanley Anthonymuthu
yep.
Put a hardcore gamer from a foreign country with this!
He wouldn't even feel the difference until 4+ seconds
nice Video idea, but completly nonsense since 1000 Mbit/s will not lower the ping, what causes the lag.
the point is, if they have internet its the best ping they can get. Or the provider has do improve their CONNECTION to the INTERNET with a lot of money -> building a new cable connection, or builing an LTE tower or sth.
Thats the point. The ping is connected to the lenght of cable u use to the next station. if u live 20 km away from the city, ur internet will be so fucking delayed. when u live next to the station it will be like 5 ms
This is pretty much how my life goes without lag.
Should've turned down the graphics settings.
TheEdKevLetsPlay! >tfw you still lag with low graphics settings on a laptop.
+TheEdKevLetsPlay! in this case it wouldnt help them, because lag and low fps are diferent things, lag is a problem with your internet, low fps is a problem with your computer
Gabriel Dias yea but lower quality means less information that needs to be processed which means less lag
information being processed is not related to graphics quality, it's related to inputs.
Lag isn’t caused by high-quality graphics.
Thanks for doing this guys. Great job!
I really think that most of this is the lack of depth perception
Reuben Horner There are two monitors for that reason.
Wolf Edmunds
Yeah... Well there is only one camera per oculus so depth no werk
+Reuben Horner The raspi will make it stereoscopic I think.
+Joe Calvert you can't make 3d with one eye.
The lag is real
The 333ms is Australia to America.
99% of game servers are in America, GG Australia
From what australians have to select from for best ping, is what i meant.
Play me at UT then. People who cant even spell and can only say insults, you filthy casuals.

I think this is the best way to explain lag to people unfamiliar with it. In my country, most people think it is only elitist think nobody should worry about.
Great demonstration, great video.
There are two ways to reach the disaster: A, asking the impossible; another, delaying the inevitable.
That's AOL for you hahaha.
I'm curious as to how well they would do wearing the device set to no lag.
There would still be normal optical delay.
Excellent point. This is an essential control.
The experimental protocol is almost completely lacking in this vid.
I wonder if the producers could provide a more complete version?
Just to clarify: 1000 Mbits = 125 Megabytes.
Where's our sitcom with these guys in it? They look like a charming group of friends!
Pretty wonderful. Unfortunately the ad concludes with conflating bandwidth with latency, which is !@#@! insane. IF they had posted their round trip time on their network - which is probably pretty good - as the conclusion I'd have been completely delighted. BANDWIDTH = capacity not SPEED. anybody know what their typical RTT is?
this article was formative for me:
tidbits.com/article/729
"It feels like something from Super Mario."
I played that game, no it doesn't.
That was pretty stupid to say lol
You played “that game”? What game? There are over 250 Mario games, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
I would call this IRL Latency, mainly cause it sounds funnier but its still accurate.
the marketing genius that created this needs an award. Now.
Now I can use the "Fucking Lag!" excuse irl.
All we need is Lag (8)...
This is hilarious
I love that their are people doing things like this.
This is a nightmare come true! Just imagine talking to your friend and all of a sudden he/she starts flopping into a wall the before you know it, they're right next to you.
1000mbps, 639274023ms = still lag
Explain the calculation, please. I guess you have succesfully calculated the answer to five apples minus three melons.
C4rb0neum I meant if the speed was 1Gbps but the latency is still a lot it's still going to lag
C4rb0neum
well exactly, you cant assume anything since it's two different variables. internet is x+y=x+y you know 100mbps=x, now, tell my, what is y? you cant, see?
doped1 Did you even read before commenting? He's saying that 1gbps speed is irrelevant if you have crazy bad latency anyways.
What he is saying is that your internet speed doesn't matter but your ping does when talking about lag
Gamers develop lag compensation, to some extent. It's about refining anticipatory focus regarding spatial awareness and precision movements, etc. As far as the concerns in this video, well... I think these kids would - if given enough time - develop techniques to the point where these activities would yield fairly normal or natural results...
Yes but your also like most gamers with lag you get eye strain, badly. So it would come with headaches and neck pain cuz that thing looks heavy. Not disagreeing just it would probably be more of a pain then it's worth.
***** this is not he point. the thing they are wearing is just there to let random people experiment the meaning of "lag" and why it is so painful for gamers and internet users in general. By experimenting in real life activities they understand why a good internet connection is meaningful, cause even for the most basic activities, lagging is a huge burden. More over, eye strain is not correlated to lag, they are completely different issues.
gamers adapt to the lag, but they will always be at a huge disadvantage. Living with that kind of lag, means you have to memorize how to move and do stuff instead of relaying on continuous video feedback, which means:
you cannot do well any activity which require completely new actions until you have mastered them
you are slow to perform complex task even if you know all the moves required, unless you literally perform them blindly or a real master of them (like dancing)
you cannot easily react to new events.
So there is no way your life could ever be completely normal. Since you are not blind but somehow even more hindered by the hiccuping feedback.
Pierfrancesco Greco I never said life like this would be completely normal... I said these activities would yield fairly normal or natural results.
Anyways, when you talk about 'mastery' of complex tasks, realize that gamers put in comparable hours to dancers, in regards to developing the type of motor skills and understanding of the variables in play in the environment. It's same shit. If you put in 1000s of hours doing something over and over, you'd most likely be able to do it 'blind' (ie hindered) with fairly good results - and no, a third of a second is not that bad in a game or in real life... when you get beyond 1-2 seconds, then yes it becomes difficult to chain complex things together with precision, anticipation of that type of stuff doesn't flow well beyond a couple secs.
The lag in this video was pretty huge, like a good 5 sec delay. I think we gamers would adapt quicker, but still have a difficult time like the people in the video.
best add I've seen in a long time
hate ads but this is great :D
Awesome Idea! so cool to see the effect of a small delay...
Skulle ha testat att köra bil också.
There was actually a fifth volunteer - a neurosurgeon.
this is the best thing ive seen, period.
LOL @1:53 when he just rams into the cupboard.
There is only one camera - the viewer doesn't even have stereoscopic view (depth perception)?
Great work, guys!
Best ads for Internet I've ever seen. Lag is so F disturbing, I don't know when this issue is gonna be disappeared, come on we are in 2014.
most of the problems they were experiancing was due to their altered depth perception via the oculus rift....but the lag didnt help either.
There's one thing i don't quite understand: why don't they ever stop their movements for a moment? Like, to see where their movements stop. And yeah, maybe in table tennis match that won't help you but i think in making food you could stop and take your time. And in bowling you could repeat your movements to estimate the paths(and then there's the "muscular" sense and memory, which should help you to remember where and in what positions are you certain body parts). Or am i forgetting something or thinking something wrong? :3
I wondered that too, im assuming they were told not to do that and to act normal
TheRussell747 I watched the other video(lag perspective) and it seemed like they stopped the video feed at some points and inserted the loading animation for a moment. But that wasn't the case in all of those situations. And on the other hand, they could be added while editing the video, as well. :P
Amazes me, every time I watch it.
this is awesome, I don't currently have an Oculus Rift but I'd love to be able to do something like this when I do. Imagine using this to train reflexes! Only thing missing would be support for 3D vision
It is a bit similar to the experiment I've tried doing a while ago- trying to live a day blindfold. This should be easier, though, because you actually still have your vision, you just have to analyse the situation and don't rely on it too much.
This would be harder. With a blindfold, you lack one input of information, your vision. With this experiment, you are actively being fed the wrong information through two mediums, visual and audio.
But even in an unlikely event of you really getting this lag, you will soon figure out how to act normally. Anyway, I'm totally getting Ocullus to try this.
get up to 1000 Mbit/s fiber today. WISH I COULD >:C
nice video though xD
the laughter that you hear in the background is the laughter that some internet provider and their support gives you whenever you experience this...
I worked before at **** and at first I kind a laughed at some people that experience this type of lag... however me myself experienced this a lot.... A LOT.... and its not fun especially when playing games and having conversation during chat conferences...
Their is still a lot of boundaries that stops us in dealing with lag..
1. Distance
2. Equipment issue
3 Server issues
4. maintenance and the lack of it
5. Support issue (example being that League of Legends would only cater to a certain ISP which bull)
and many more...
So its up to the companies... people have the money to pay...
why not make the service excellent so people would regret the subscription
its kinda almost like buying supplements.... if it works, worth.. if not, we regret it...
thanks GG
I have to admit, I hate slow internet so much. Despite this, waiting for a webpage to load or a video to buffer has taught me so many lessons. In fact, I think I am more productive with slow internet during most cases (assuming I'm not skype-ing or working online, of course). When the internet is fast, I just tend to download movies and feast on RUclips, while when the internet is slow, I actually open my book and study to kill waiting time.
Er, you don't need sight to crack an egg into a non-moving bowl.
Yes you do, unless you're trying to go by touch, which was not the point of the experiment. Since you're turning your head, to look at the bowl, your turn is on lag as well. Plus he was moving REALLY slowly. The point wasn't whether he could find a way to do it correctly. It was to see if he could do it by sight alone. But yes, still amusing
there is both the position of your view that is lagged, but also the position of your hand. they are seeing their hand over the bowl, even though it has since moved too far. you'd first have to get used to waiting for the full lag time to confirm that things are the way you expect them to be; I would imagine that eventually you'd get used to it at least somewhat, and start to be more confident about whether you're off or not.
That too. But that didn't seem to be his problem if he stops over the bowl. But if he didn't stop, then yes that's a factor. But it seemed he would wait. So i think there are a lot of problems with lag in real life.
0:45 Was she... did she play the old Mario games with her face?
Maybe with the.... system that shall not be named for only having black and red and lots of back and neck issues...
Kreepy Pearson Virtual Boy
Kenny H What part of "shall not be named" couldn't you understand? For the sake of mankind it is best to forget. Along with the glove that shall not be named.
Yea she did facial
Online vr players are probably really enjoying this video
Even with lag they were still having a good time.
I must say, I'm jealous.
1:33 I thought the goggles made you lag, not become physically disabled.
most of this is due to headgear, bad fov etc. I mean, the pan didn't move so him missing the pan is not due to lag...
Not really. His hand already moved away from the pan but his eyes and therefore brain saw it right over it.
LOL ur brain is a little laggy. Like the other dude said, by the time HE SAW his hand over the pan it was actually already past the pan.
Know what you are talking about before commenting on something. I'm gonna guess you have never had lag because that's what happens when ever you have lag. Because lag is delay so when he saw his hand over it he poured but he went over

yea but pan is static and he poured besides it, not in it. If it was just a delay, he move hand over the pan, wait a second, pour the mass in, remove the hand. But he MISSED the pan. LAg has nothing to do with it if no one is moving the pan around...think about it...it's the perspective he is getting, it doesn't match his real FOV so it is confusing the brain. Like, drawing or doing something while looking into a mirror.

Could he have gone slower and got it in the pan? Sure but then you wouldnt have a commercial. It was lag because again when he saw his hand over the pan, it was actually past the pan. This is lag.
Could he have gone slowly and stopped? Sure. He KNEW there was lag. But if he did that it wouldnt make for good advertising.
Most of the problems people were having with it was the depth perception from the camera. Plus lag is pretty easy to deal with when it is constant like that, its really bad when it happens in spikes
First world problems: "I have oculus rift attached to my head, and can't use my 4 other senses to hit a frying pan with an egg" GG
Was camera stereoscopic? Bad experiment if is not.
The camera was in fact not stereoscopic, thus it was a poor experiment. There are also stereoscopic rift setups, so there was no excuse other than laziness or cost.

These guys do it. I think they just wanted to make a point though.
David Eno It's possible that the nausea in the stereoscopic case would be unbearable.
Having used the OR, if you turn your head and the camera doesn't also turn, it is the WORST feeling...
I'm not really convinced that this is real anyways; it's an ad. :P
They deliberately set it up to be flawed, in order to show what it would be like. It's not a "bad experiment" if it was all deliberate.
Lethe Denova It was testing 2 variables then. 1. Lack of the depth perception 2. Lag
Not being able to see 3D world is going to diminish accuracy a lot.
Lag is real, fear is a choice.
I fear lag
Is there anywhere online I can find the setup to this? I would like to try this myself.
WTF with the bowling scene? I heard a noise behind me! hahah amazing video.
Känner igen mig väldigt mycket när man har rökt en alldeles för fet.
