It's so good to see a "normal person" (not hamster/rodent enthusiast, rescue, pet shop or breeder ect) doing so much right!! Love that you also mentioned how you used to think hamsters = small cages and hamster balls. We all start somewhere and it's great to show that people can love hamsters even with misinformation, as long as they're willing to learn and adapt to give them a great life. Nyla is absolutely adorable!!
A small tip that I can give you is don’t move her hoard of food in her tunnels because it makes hamsters very stressed after they learn that it’s not where they left it, but that’s it, good cage :))
@@Aisha-721 this is my number 1. stress factor. you're not supposed to leave the pee for more than a couple of days (mold, ammonia etc.) but how the heck do i know if they peed in their tunnels without destroying them and creating stress for the hamster???? mine make burrows in most random places. last time i had to clean because they were ill i discovered peed bedding all over their tunels (maybe they got sick because of that!!)....and still NOBODY has an answer!!! how to know if they pee in their burrows.
I have the same hamster species, and she is the opposite. She is what the hamster people call a ghost hamster. Super scared, bitey, etc... So I treat her like a fish, lol. I give her the entire world, and just watch her. Her current enclosure is 1,704 sq inches, with half of it being sand, and half being 10+ inches of bedding. You are so right about hamster supplies being ridiculously expensive! I ended up making a lot of mine or using things that weren't specifically made for her. Also, my cage is a DIY and it ended up being over 200 US $ to get hamster safe supplies so that I could make it as big as possible (71 inches L x 24 inches wide x 24 inches tall) and that was still cheaper than the biggest ones on Amazon, lol!
you're lucky if you see her. mine is never there. i'm lucky if i see her for a couple of minutes each night. it's as if there is noone there. i haven't developed any love or and relationship which is mega frustrating
The biggest con for me is after learning how disinterested they are in humans sometimes. I honestly did go into getting a pet because I am so lonely, and the feeling that my babies might just not like me is a bit sad. But hey, I'm not forcing anything on them.
YESS EXACTLY, some hamsters don't wanna chill with their owners and thats okay but it can be sad sometimes. All hamsters are different, my first hamsters was SO uninterested but Nyla is a lot more friendly!
Yah, I had exactly the same experience. I mean, I knew they needed a lot more space than the little cages but I didn't know anything like; balls are bad for them, sand baths are necessary, not optional, and the bedding they often sell in pet stores is DEADLY TO THEM!! First hamsters I've had since I was a kid, are two roborovskis and they are absolutely insane. I've been as patient as one could be, as is possible to be, yet still if I were to handle them outside the cage they would most definitely be lost. They are SO fast.
Im thinking abt getting a hamster and this really helped! I owned one before, but it was around 3 years ago and im ready to own one again! :)) I also LOVE your hamsters house its beautiful and has so much space, love it!!

Thank u for being so kind enough to want to spread the right info
Loved the video! You mentioned that you thought nyla was a winter white, she is actually a hybrid dwarf. Because of bad breeding practices there are no more domesticated pure bred winter white and campbells dwarf hamsters 😕 I hope this was helpful!
great video , informative and entertaining . i always throw away the hoarded food [ in case of any wee or poops on it ] but i do put in some new replacement food in the area i found it , usually a tablespoon amount then i scatter feed a bit extra when cage is finished for my hammy to collect up .
Love the setup! Nyla is adorable. I would just recommend spacing out the rocks in her enclosure a bit so she does not get a foot stuck. Other than that great job!
One thing I have learned while owning hamsters is, if you want a cuddle buddy go for a Male Syrian Hamster, I had one named Cloudie that passed last October, he was super friendly and loved cuddling, he never once bit me and it was super easy to tame him, he would even sleep on me (I have pictures). I'm not saying all Male Syrian's will be just like him, but males are definitely more cuddle friendly rather than females, I don't have dwarfs but I do currently have 2 Female Short Haired Syrian hamster's, their nice and all (still babies so I am still taming them) but their definitely not the same as Males and they are way more energetic than Males.
my robo doesent like being pet so i stoped, but he likes taking food out of my fingers but not on my palm which is amazing that he knows what he likes and doesent like, hes a ghost hamster so the SECOND i see him he either runs off or hides, i do get to feed him though and he loves the scatter feeding i do. i love hamsters sm omds, how do people not!
For some reason my hamster likes being handled with gloves. I'm trying to get her used to my hands, she's okay with it but she's not intrested but then when I put gloves on and she's running all over the place 🤣
One more con from me to you - availability of specialised vets. If you don't have an exotic-pets-specialised vet in your city you're kinda gambling if a standard vet knows enough about rodents to provide suitable care in case anything happens. Usually it's not a lot of standard vets that are capable of helping a rodent.
@@niamhjoy one thing, idk where you live but if they ship to you hopes healthy treats is a rlly good brand for sprays etc and they sell Whimzees for 50p each
Ok but another pro - you often don't have to buy a chew toy, if you have some rural not polluted supply of twigs or branches of birch or chokeberry or pretty much any of deciduous trees or fruit trees, you can just pick it up and roll with it : D
