Experience a captivating journey through the heart of Edwardian Liverpool with this intriguing film tour. Captured from the vantage point of a tram's front, the footage exemplifies the well-known early film technique of a 'phantom ride', which takes the viewers on a virtual voyage by showcasing the moving vehicle's perspective.
As we travel from the Pier Head, an area pre-dating the famous 'Three Graces' architecture, towards the bustling commercial hub of Liverpool, the camera captures the elegant city inhabitants, many of whom appear intrigued by its presence.
The overhead railway, that was demolished in 1956, can be seen briefly. The streets look very busy with pedestrians and trams.
Clip 1 is Pier Head. Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas coming into view at 00:56.
Clip 2 1:16 - 1:47 is opposite Castle Street going Eastwards down Dale Street.
Clip 3 1:47 - 2:03 is going Southwards down Castle Street.
The original film is very badly damaged in places. as you will see, this damage has carried over and cannot be removed without lots of manual edting. Even so, there is stil plenty of footage to provide a time machine effect and draw you back to Edwardian Liverpool.
