1994 Oscar® Winner: Best Cinematography. Based on the novella by Jim Harrison, this sweeping romantic epic is about the Ludlow brothers--two men (Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn) in love with the same woman (Julia Ormond). Also starring Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Edward Zwick (The Siege). Screenplay by Susan Shilliday and Bill Wittliff.
The range of emotions that this film brings to the viewer and the depth of connection is incredible. Masterpiece
Decker with his pipe, a thermos of coffee, and Sharp's Rifle, both calmly and coolly take revenge on his daughter's murderer.
Great movie.Brads best
As it should be. Eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, wound for wound.
Technically, what that cop did was rather manslaughter, unintentional killing and so on (depending on the laws and customs of the particular countries and legal definitions therefore). But over the world, murder in vast majority of cases requires intent to kill, or at least intent to commit a grave harm to the body. Reckless shooting burst in the air, that ricochets and unfortunately kills someone is not considered so.
Well, should they sent him to prison for that, they would have saved his life ... But because the system was crooked, they sealed his fate by not serving the justice.
Perfect Justice against total tyranny.
This movie takes place in Montana at a time when Vigilante justice was sometimes the only justice when corrupt politicians and cops were involved.

Love that it was Decker who got to avenge Isabel 2 by taking out the man who killed his daughter, while Tristan took out the other scumbag.
One thing I just noticed that I hadn’t before: Decker and Tristan are so much alike. Decker is an outlaw, a rebel, who chooses to settle down with an indigenous woman, living happy in the outskirts of society. Tristan is a wild man, who has issues with authority, and also chooses to live outside of society. No wonder Isabel falls for him.
And she's One Stab's granddaughter, educated by Tristan's father while raised by the outlaw who Tristan grew up with. No wonder Tristan fell for her once he'd grown.
I was 17 when this came out. Still one of my favorites. The score to this movie has stayed with me always.
11 at the time, man it was good, the 80s and 90s really produced some really good movies, just good stuff
@@realityitis4The best! Hollywood will never produce two great decades of movies!😊
This entire movie is a masterpiece. I could watch it over and over. Phenomenal acting.
Definitely in my top 3.
you got to love how calmed and focus Decker is, avenging his daughter. Justice Served
That long barreled SHARPS Buffalo Rifle in 45-70 (or maybe 50-70) is a real "man stopper".
For reasons I can't fully put into words, I've always found the Decker character especially compelling. Maybe it's because he's basically a good person who somehow ran afoul of the law. The mystery behind his back story adds to it. And, of course, the casting and acting are superb. A great example of a minor character played to the hilt by the actor.
@@robw9435 Decker was an outlaw from what I read so you’re right that he ran afoul of the law. I think the reason Isabel 2 was so attracted to Tristan is because he reminded her of her father. Both are rebellious men who chose to live away from society, married indigenous women, formed a family, and were at peace, until tragedy strikes.
@@unknownstranger6875 Wow, great insight there! You put into words what I couldn't. I love writing that has subtle yet deep themes like this, even in relatively minor characters.
he also took his time with those shots, he made that bastard suffer, it was not a 1 shot kill on purpose
Usually I watch a movie one time. That's it, no matter how good I think it is. I've watched Legends of the Fall 3 or 4 times so far and I'll probably watch it another 3 or 4 times. One of the best movies ever. Maybe Brad Pitt's best work.
Are you now more of a slmp?
I agree
Just a phenomenal movie
This movie is a masterpiece yet so underrated.
Very underrated, every character has some relation to us. The hypocrisy of the prohibition Era, Tristan considered an outlaw for doing the same thing that the o' bannions were doing
This may be some of Brad Pitt's finest work. Great cast, great script, great directing and just a great story, which was well told.
A River Runs Through It also one of Brad Pitts good 90s movie... a real movie
@@jhtsurvival I would agree. It had depth. It also had a great cast.
The Brad Pitt’s bigest acting and excellent movie. Almost 30 years since it’s Good see it again allways
That's a tall order. He's a very good actor. Fight club, Benjaman Button, Kalifornia
Meet Joe Black
You know the man is going through a lot but the Decker just casually has his smoke and coffee before going to work, sheer will.
Love the fact that he brings a thermos and a pipe while waiting to shoot his prey.
Was just gonna make the same comment lol
Total savage. Loved this entire scene.
It actually reminded me of Bill Murray in Caddy Shack when he was hunting the gopher at night; rifle and a six-pack.
Like it is a picnic. :D
Always a picnic when killing for revenge.
I hadn’t seen this movie in many years, just watched it again. Forgot just how GREAT IT IS!! Pitt is head and shoulders above most of his generation of actors… too many great films to even recall…. Kudos to a magnificent career, keep ‘em coming!
I thought he had 3 movies to make and then he was done with Hollywood
Luv how decker has that smile when he shoots, awesome revenge for his baby girl,
Brad Pitt reminding us he’s been BRAD PITT for thirty years running.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out in the mid 90’s, fantastic movie.
3:25 VERY realistic depiction of what being hit with a Sharps rifle would actually be like. All that power.
same so good, this and the original animated beauty and the beast, the chick flick, the cutting edge, the first batman in 89 man what a time for movies
Jim Harrison, a great writer, he had a great life, and he lived life the way that he wanted to. We will ALL miss him. RIP Jim.
Always.
Gerry Martinez : you are perfectly right. Jim Harrison is still one of my favorite writers.
Je l'ai rencontré à Paris, quel souvenir !
Have always wanted to read the novel if it was adapted from one which I could of surely got from the credit roll.
Not familiar with Jim Harrison but will surely now look him up and delve into his works. Are his novels of a similar nature? Thanks for this information, the film itself is absolutely fantastic and have seen it countless times, always sending chills through me and breaking my Heart. As someone previously mentioned, I too agree this could be Pitt's finest role, it's a great character study, the whole direction, cinematography, dop, casting, music score, everything just fits in perfectly.
Wow, you were not wrong when you said he lived an extraordinary life. So much material he had published, ranging from novels, poetry, screenplays and essayist. He surely does definitely deserve the acclaim and respect for all his endeavors literary and likewise.
Being British I am abit surprised at myself for not discovering him before. He definitely sounds like one of America's modern great authors.
For some bizarre reason which I cannot explain, in my mind I put him on par with Jack London who I am definitely familiar with and have naturally read most of his works. He too had an interesting and hard life but was tragically cut short. One of America's finest, maybe I'm overreaching when saying that Jim Harrison recalls to my mind Jack London because as of yet I haven't read any of his novels which will be addressed soon.
Maybe it's because of the story and backdrop to The Legends of the Fall that suggests it to me.
I hope I haven't inadvertently given offence to anyone who passionately has followed Jim Harrison or J London alike.
One of the most underrated movies
Legends of the fall - what a masterpiece of movie making.
It was boring
Great movie
Almost as depressing as Gallipolli.
@@3m5r56 Only the violent parts were OK, but only OK. I give it 2 stars out of 5.
@@3m5r56 Ya, it wasn't the Transformers Dark Side of the Moon or Freddy vs Jason. This is real storytelling and character portrayal. It can either be appreciated for what it is (by most) or not (by some). This is absolutely ok because everyone likes different things.
My all time favourite movie. A River Runs Through It, as well as Dances with Wolves are right up there for me as well.
@ Aubrey Young Was Dances with Wolves that space movie with thr tall blue aliens?
@@68Tboy I don't mind sci-fi but I have no idea what you're referencing. Dances with Wolves is starring Kevin Costner, filmed in 1990.
@Interro...No, that would be Avatar...
I would have to.flip a coin on whether Lonesome Dove or 1883 is the best movie ever.
Decker sniping that guy with the sharps rifle is so akin to the final William Munny bar scene in Unforgiven. We've been provided tidbits of backstory that make you think the character has matured from a dark past and will now serve the plot differently by living in quiet hiding. Then you find out that it's still the same man; as cold, calculated, and discrete as is needed. Sinister.
We all are
He did what was required no more no less
You better be sure what you're taking on when you mess with another man's family. The bear inside will only hibernate for so long
Excellent analysis
Cop was one that killed his daughter.
A very strong and beautiful film. The main character's father-in-law is a serious character. Quiet, inconspicuous, but fierce man.
He's a stone killer with that Sharps rifle.
Silent, but deadly.
@@tudyk21 He had laser precision with it.
British actress is rather nice
He’s similar to Tristan, which is why Isabel fell for Tristan.
Another reason the rifleman is smoking his pipe…to see where the wind is blowing. It matters on a long distance shot.😉
Pas génial, le tabac sent à des kms
@@kimekendoudou7181 Hey I smell Tobacco..Run somebody,s gonna shoot us! ...Never Happened.
That's true in relation to wind and levitation and a few more factors naturally when it's a long distance but the smoke depending I suppose how thick it is could just as much give his position away depending maybe on the actual levitation and gradients of the land.
I never understood why this film has reputation of being a chick flick, it's a human flick and a masterpiece
I guess when Brad Pitt is in a film looking like Fabio it's a chick flick. I liked it.

"SCREW THE GOVERNMENT" is the best line in the whole film. 100 years ago the people knew how CORRUPT it was.
They took that scene out for TV
It was a very different government, may I remind you, 110 years ago.

I love the beer scene when the guy won't give Stab a beer.Father tells him back off he's at a weight and height disadvantage. But he goes savage
I just commented on the look the colonel gives. Great precursor of what to come
Any movie with Brad Pitt in it is naturally worth seeing. But this movie will be watched for decades to come.
I just watch it for the second time since came out .. again tears 😭 pain .. beautiful sceneries .. strong family bond .. the wild side of Pitt is just pure adrenaline .
I always like One Stab singing, to his little boy. Vengeance cometh and that right soon...be ready.
Most epic powerful film score ever. RIP James Horner.
I must confess, alot of the story is said and told here without even having to say a word!!
I remember being like maybe 5 or 6 years old and being at my grandmom's house and my mom,my aunt and uncle, and grandmom we're watching this and I was kinda goin around the house so I'd catch glimpses of it...I always remembered this part well and the part when he's holding his brother's literal heart the most vivid. Now I'm almost 35 and have always liked this film once I was old enough to understand and appreciate it....also I never noticed how much the actor who plays Casey Dutton on Yellowstone resembles Brad Pitt in this film being that their both western based films.
How he looks him in the eyes as if to say you took everything from me now I'm taking everything from you epic
This movie was so incredible. The story, cinematography, music, acting.
This scene…Family is everything.
I really felt for Alfred in this movie. The life he had with Susannah was an illusion. He was a decent man, probably the best of his brothers, but always second choice. He insisted on being with a woman who'd never love him the way she did Tristan or even Samuel.
I always imagined (in movieland) that Alfred eventually found a woman who just wanted him and was a good wife and even maybe had children with him.
@@kristikristi1183 me too
Because, Alfred wanted a woman who was never & could ever be in love with him, and she told him that, and he did not listen.

One of the best movies ever made. When the hated son kills the cops to save his family. Breaks the rules for the first time, and his fathers hugs him. Best redemption moment ever. It brought tears.
Tristan was the son they all loved....not hated
@@calvinsuu1949I believe he's referring to Alfred, who was somewhat estranged from his father for oh so many years for always making the wrong choices in life. In killing the sheriff he saved his father and Tristan's lives. Tristan never killed any policeman. Yes, this was and remains a superb epic.
My wife tried telling me this was a chick flick.
WTFE!
One of the greatest and most virile movies ever made.
Well, it isn't like we don't encourage the belief that we don't like movies with plots. Most of the crap we watch has an very large explosions and boobs component in it. And I'm not putting myself above anything here... there's crap I love that my wife finds stupidly juvenile. But then we watched 'Fury' together. I'm an ex-tanker and spent half the movie explaining all the sub-plots and contexts to it. She just thought it was a 'tank movie'.
@Ban this youtube Pitt tends to go for 'Heathcliffe' type roles where he's always melodramatic and dashingly moody. I thought the trope was dumb in high school while being forced to read Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen, and my opinion hasn't changed much. And that was Pitt all day long in LOTF and Troy. I've just never been a fan of the whole faux-heartthrob routine. It comes across as fake, trite, and trivial.
In 'Fury' he portrayed a very credible NCO that was just trying to get him and his crew home. It was very against type for him, much the same as Tom Hanks' Capt. Miller in 'Saving Pvt. Ryan'.
@Ban this youtube Well, if you're thinking about becoming a reenactor, let me offer you a couple-three bits of advice:
1] Find a good unit to reenact with. Shop around. There's more than one unit out there interested in what you're interested in.
As an aside, let me also say that if you want to portray a German, that's fine. But for fuck's sake, DON'T portray the SS. That's just a personal opinion, but I'm a lifelong military historian. It might be just my opinion, but it's an **informed** opinion. And I'm confident enough in that opinion that I'll be happy to argue facts of the case any time, any where, with any one.
2] Buy absolutely nothing more than what you need to 'get along' until you know what your unit is wearing /using. A vanilla, generic private's uniform of the military you're interested in will do you just fine.
3] Last thing: read everything about the period and military you're interested in, **especially** the stuff that's highly critical of them. When you dress out, people expect you to know more than they do, so take the time to learn it.
And let me know if you want to be a Civil War reenactor. I can offer some specific advice on that.
I thought Tristan would never live to be an old man. I was wrong about that. I was wrong about many things.
One of the most powerfull movies I ever seen. And one more thing .... I love Montana.
I remember taking a coworker out on a date, and we saw this movie's ad and figured with these type of actors in it...had to be worth seeing. Can't remember the other movie we rejected to see this. Didn't work out with the coworker, but one shouldn't dip their pen in the company inkwell anyway.
He didn't like that movie movie for the date?
@@genox3636 oh we liked the movie, but then she met a BMOC in a small college and nature took over :)
@@genox3636 *She, he's straight it seems
@@albertgaspar627 I'm 71 and in my experience, those guys, the BMOC and such, rely too heavily on their popularity rep. As time goes by, the girl they won over wishes she'd made a different choice, perhaps the guy she passed on. Its a small consolation when you find out 20-30 years later that she wishes it was you. This doesn't happen 100% of the time but it does often enough to where its likely, for both sexes.
@@if6was929 Science proves you correct--when we say "nice guys finish last", what generally happens is a younger lass sows her wild seeds and once she's looking for a husband and contributor to her child, if she has matured by that time, she wants the nice, nuturing male. Frankly, if she's maintained her physical appearance, she'll obtain him, too. I know its crass to say that, but we are animals designed not to dilute the gene pool.
Of course, this means just nothing when we're 18 yrs old--"oh, wait a bunch of summers, and then you'll land one woman" :) we want what we want right then--i had my own "pad", no roommates, and I enjoyed a simple life but it would have been nice to share it. Most teens were looking for the next party while I was out at social events mentioned in the local papers, so I certainly wasn't what most women were looking for at that time (hard to get drunk at a public event at that age). Of course, considering the divorce rate is nearly 50%, most people fall out of love (lust?) with their partner no matter what led to their choice. "Seven year itch" and all that.
In my particular case, that coworker did marry the BMOC after he cheated on her during their time in college together, and had kids, and they may still be married--but she sure doesn't look like she used to :) I was working my way thru college in a small town, and ran into the usual small minds. As for the BMOC cashing in on their reputation, that's what its for, and it does them well enough--that's the age they might be looking to marry or get their dream job and work their way up the corporate ladder. Its up to them after getting that foot in the door to not be another "peaked in school" candle that burns twice as bright and fades twice as fast.

Something that always got me was how the bootleg brothers rained down death on Tristan killing Isabel 2 in the process but then Alfred the Senator, (wasn't he?) works with the crooks and purchase illegal liquor from them for his fancy party.
