    In our quest for seeking out a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle, we made a plan that includes zero waste living, tiny house living and full-time travel. We considered buying an RV, looked at trailers and airstreams but settled on doing a bus conversion for our off the grid, tiny house on wheels. We bought a 1996 MCI 102 D3 coach bus and with the Bus Demolition behind us now we begin our Build!
    See our Bus Demolition series here: • Bus Demolition - Rehab...
    In its previous life, our MCI bus was used as a school bus, we don't think we can legitimately call it a skoolie. We are confident that converting our bus into a class a motor home will have challenges, but doing a massive overhaul and remodel on a motorhome / RV remodel didn’t seem to align with the off grid bus life we were aiming for.
    In Season 3 we share our tiny home design, construction trial and errors, zero waste improvements and travel adventures.

    Very cute production! I’d make one change: cut the wood top, so the access to the “cover” material can be accessed without lifting the whole top; users will need to access the cover material more often than lifting the whole lid to access the collection bucket.
    Good, to plumb the urine diverter to a tank, or, to a “French drain”. Better, if parked, to dig in an in-ground tank that can drain slowly to garden, fertilizing along the way.

    Possibly varnish the interior of the box also to make it easier to clean, and not absorb moisture? Lovely custom separator toilet! I would love to know how it has worked after being used for several months!

    If you put the plywood on the table saw and cut through about 2/3 the way through, then you will be able to bend the plywood in almost a complete circle.

    Loved the video! You're the first DIY composting toilet I've seen that's made an effort to trim the area so that the back of your thigh doesn't rest on the wood frame. That was always my concern with the big box/frame style ones 😅 This version seems more comfy!

    Great move going composting! Just be aware that humanure should not be used on any type of plant life that will supply food ones needs. It works great on ornamentals and regular trees. Urine can be used on fetalizing plants as well. The common dilution ratio is one part urine to nine parts water. If you are taking any time of medication do not use on plants that will provide food. Was thinking of getting a natures head composted but customs over here charges 24% of the price of the item, OUCH!
    Keep up the great work. Just think some day you might tour Europe with that bus as well!

    Just a FYI. Wearing gloves while using a table saw is more dangerous. If the glove catches the blade, it tends to bind and pull in the glove along with your fingers inside the glove.

    Guy's, what are you going to use for an agitator? for your solids and peat.

    • @Rehabit8
      @Rehabit8  4 года назад +2

      Hi Neil. I think at this point our plan is to not have an agitator, because we can’t actually turn it into humanure as we travel. But we’ll see how it goes. I hope with the fan there is enough aeration and it doesn’t really matter. If we feel it’s not working and we need it to aerate more to avoid smells then we’ll fashion something together.

    G'day guys and greetings from Tasmania Australia, I've seen a lot of people install these type of toilets. I don't know they just seem filthy to me on my boat I used a porta potty which wasn't to bad it had chemicals that you put into it, which were environmentally friendly the down side of these is if you have a some friends around although you have taking that into account which is good what happens if you get diarrhoea? But I reckon you have taken that into account. I really like watching you turn this bus into a home, anyway take care and stay safe kind regards John Anyway it's great to see you again for some reason channel isn't the same as other bus builds and I like how you are careful of what you use from an environmental point of view to what is toxic to you.

    • @Rehabit8
      @Rehabit8  4 года назад

      Hi John! It’s funny you should say that, others have mentioned the guest issue. I really don’t see this as a big issue. You educate your friends and what’s the worst that could happen? They do it wrong and you throw out the solid bucket contents and start again. I get that the concept is different from what most have experienced most their life, but I think this makes so much more sense. I did not like our black tank experience. Now a boat, I don’t know what would make sense on a boat. A compost toilet on a boat might not make sense. Hmmm yeah I’m not sure what I’d do on a boat. Have you ever used a compost toilet before John?

    • @johnkinnane547
      @johnkinnane547 4 года назад +1

      Rehabit8 G'day no I have never used one the closes thing on the farm was virtually a hole in the ground, they weren't around in my day and age I am 63 yo and I have seen a lot. With having a crowd around the urine container would fill up fast so, I just see it as embarrassing.

    Like your videos foremost! Composting toilet a little too hayseed for me personally. Maybe in military flying with relief tubes for many years jaded me on this subject :-))
    I asked about the engine driven A/C About if it worked, you said it did. A full working bus A.C. was worth a few thousand with all brackets and controls.
    This is a good trading chip for a marine toilet and other parts .
    If possible create a demo punchlist to telegraph to several user groups prior to trashing more bus infrastructure.
    A MCI chassis manual is a good reference manual to have instead of using FB or Twitter genius types, the internet masks their pedigree.
    Best of luck, cute videos

    Strictly speaking that is not a composting toilet. Most cases composting doesn't even start in buckets, composting pile or some other way is needed to compost to final product. Everybody still talk composting toilets :-)
    Google "biolan kompostikäymälä" that is much closer "real" composting toilet than any bucket system. Still with Biolan you (may) need composting pile or something. You need also empty Biolan quite rarely 1-5 times per year depending how many people is using it.
    I wish someday to make a bus conversion. I plan to make composting toilet based to that Biolan toilet. I have place where I can empty it and there is composting pile anyway. I think building emptying hole (hatch?) so that I can empty toilet directly to a wheelbarrow. Biolan toilet is 200liter (50gal) and max what you can empty onetime is 100litre (25gal). Minimum time that poop has to be composting before emptying is 5-8 weeks.
    Cool video again! That pocket thing looks really good way to make that curve.

    • @Rehabit8
      @Rehabit8  4 года назад +1

      Thanks glad you liked the video! You’re right this would only be the beginning stages of actually composting our human waste. But as we travel we will have nowhere to turn this into usable compost. So this serves us as a way to conserve water for now. Sounds like you have a good set up and plan though! Thanks for sharing!
